This week on the Healthy Bytes Podcast, with area Audrain County schools returning to the classroom today, we thought it'd be a great idea to sit down with a couple of ladies that could address what parents and students could do to help keep sickness from affecting their school year this year. Also, they offer great tips on how to deal with mental health issues and how to help kids eat right as the school year progresses!

Also, we include tips on how to stay safe when dealing with unexpected weather changes.
This week, we welcome back Dr. Carl Abbott to the microphone to discuss more issues concerning eyes and vision. This time around, we discuss various infections that could impair or harm your vision. It's an interesting look, pun intended, into the world of eye medicine and problems faced by doctors in this realm. Oh, by the way, we wouldn't recommend eating during the podcast as some of the issues covered this time around may be a bit squeamish to the stomachs of some!

It's called the National Community Inclusion Project (NiCIP) and is funded through the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability. The Mexico YMCA team of local residents on the local planning committee is called the Inclusive Health Collaborative. Don't worry, we know that's a lot of word salad to digest at the get-go. Brooke does a fantastic job breaking it down and, she lets you know how you can get involved as well!
This week, on the Healthy Bytes Podcast, we welcome to the microphone the College and Career Advisor at the Mexico High School, Rebecca Moppin, as she talks about an apprenticeship program she is launching to try and cover the gap years of age 17 to 21 for those students who want to explore a possible field to work in once they are out of high school and enter the workforce. The program is in its infancy and Moppin hopes to launch it in the near future. Hear how it ties into a person's overall health going forward once their high school days are behind them on this edition of the Healthy Bytes Podcast!
This week on the Healthy Bytes podcast, we welcome to the microphone Mexico Animal Hospital Dr. Treena DeVault, DVM, to discuss the recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, or Bird Flu, The flu was found to have transferred to dairy cattle in 36 dairy cattle herds in nine US states. Dr. DeVault discusses what H5N1 is and how it affects those animals that become infected. And, with the one case of bovine to human transfer, she discusses the affects that person saw. Also, she talks about how we shouldn't be too worried yet about particles of the virus being found in the nation's milk supply. All in all, it's an interesting chat with Dr. DeVault and we think it's one you will enjoy and learn a lot from as well!
The Mid-Missouri area is looking at a possible multi-day severe weather threat across the entire area. On this special edition of the Healthy Bytes podcast, we managed to sit down with University of Missouri Atmospheric Sciences Professor and Meteorologist Eric Aldrich to discuss the threats on the table this weekend.

Haden was on Spring Break from the Missouri House when he stopped by over a week ago when this episode was recorded and we talked about doulas, the possible expansion of state-paid residencies and House Bill 1423, which is an Omnibus Women's Health Bill.

He is the director of the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center Service Line and we are exploring the new partnership between ACHD and Ellis Fischel to offer a cancer screening clinic once a month on the first Friday of each month at the ACHD.

This week on the program, we asked Mexico General Surgeon Dr. Joe Corrado to come in and visit the show and educate us on colon cancer and why it's so important to get screened! Dobyns also talks about programs offered through the Help Center in Mexico and the Mexico Senior Center, of which Dobyns serves through their boards.
As many of you may have heard, we lost a dear, dear friend to the show this past Sunday when we learned of the untimely passing of retired Mexico veterinarian, Dr. Don Hudson. We decided here at the Healthy Bytes Podcast to pay tribute to Dr. Hudson, or "Doc" as he liked to be called, by making available one of the funnest podcasts we did with him. In this episode, Doc, and our host Chris Newbrough, talk RSV and other things involving animals and sometimes, the laughter got the best of us where we had to stop the taping to compose ourselves and it made it hard on our editor to make the show sound clean and professional. Doc cared about animal health, and particularly your animal's health, almost as much as we cared for him! To say he will be missed is a gross understatement! We will miss his easy-goingness, his quick wit, his quick laughter that got you caught up in it and, most of all, we will miss him as a whole person! He made this planet a better place and, he left it the same! We're going to miss you Doc! Rest easy, our friend! Thanks for everything you did for the two-legged and the four-legged world while you were here!

To start this season, we've brought Eastern District Audrain County Commissioner Leslie Meyer back to talk about a new Discount Card Program called Live Healthy from the National Association of Counties. This program will help Audrain County residents save money on prescription drugs that their insurance won't cover or covers very little of the price. The program also has some discount prices on some other health and dental programs that your insurance might not offer.
Each resident, through Audrain County's membership at the national level through NAC, is eligible for this program and program cards are available at the county and the Audrain County Health Department.
This week, we welcome Carl Donaldson to the Healthy Bytes podcast. Carl is the Emergency Management Director for the county of Audrain and has been in his role since August of 2021. This week, we continue our employee profile feature by talking with Administrative Support/Interpretative Services Specialist Ana Garcia. Ana addresses her role here at the Audrain County Health Department (ACHD) as an interpreter for the Hispanic population in Audrain County that are seeking services at the ACHD. Ana also discusses her new group the health department is launching later this month that will focus on the Spanish-speaking women population in Audrain County. The group will meet once a month here at the health department to help those that Spanish is their first language and those that are bilingual in the county talk about issues facing them on a daily basis.
In this week's edition, we talk with Audrain Ambulance District Administrator Graeme Goodwin about how the closure of Audrain Community Hospital in late March has affected the district in the terms of run times, personnel and revenue. We also talk in general terms about how an ambulance district operates and what it takes to keep it a viable entity for the residents it serves.

Bingham explains how the program works and how residents can access the program to help them find a ride for themselves or a loved one. The program is administered through the Boonslick Regional Planning Commission out of Warrenton and has helped thousands of Missourians since its inception in 2013.
