Apples don’t fall far from the tree, but sometimes they are carried on a great journey by a greater purpose to be planted in an orchard that will feed generations to come. Our guest on today’s episode shares her wisdom about the great honor of cultivating the next generation through the lens of osteopathy. As a physician, a teacher and a delightful human, she has learned to stay rooted in the present to care about all of her patients. Remembering her own journey, she inspires others to adapt and heal as we are able. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.

As a kid, I thought I'd make a great veterinarian like my dad. But I came to see the beautiful mess of joy and heartache among my fellow humans as the place where I wanted to invest my compassion. From a South Dakota farm boy with plenty of siblings to Leukemia survivor to medical school, ONMM residency and beyond, I'm excited to take on a new adventure of "podcaster" as a life long learner and ONMM enthusiast. I'm Dr. Jordan Little D.O. to celebrate the passing of the torch to as the new interim host, I chatted with Dr. Ben Greene talk about the lessons I've learned in practicing compassion little by little.

At 14 years old she contracted E.coli, which led tosepsis and many subsequent health challenges. Later a polyglandular autoimmune syndrome which led to chronic fatigue during medical school. She was disappointed there was not more education on lifestyle modifications to optimize health. This led her to seek knowledge on Integrative medicine, and acupuncture. At a Helms Medical Acupuncture Institute course she met a few osteopathic physicians who introduced her to osteopathic manipulative treatment. Finding herself living in the town where osteopathy was founded she applied to the plus one year at the ONMM residency in Kirksville, MO. Now she will be the OMM course director of the second year osteopathic medical students at ATSU. We are fortunate to have her in our profession and thank her for thework she is doing forming the next generation of osteopathic physicians.

After a near death experience, he realized his life had a purpose - that of serving others. He wasn’t sure what this would look like until he worked with an osteopathic physician. Then and there he knew this was his path. During medical school he participated in a 40 hour cranial course which helped him appreciate in a knew way the dignity of the person and the patient. Now working as a traveling physician, he sees how the philosophy of osteopathy treating the whole person Body, Mind and Spirit is important to improve our healthcare system and as a juxtaposition from the influence of purely technocratic data driven approach to a person’s health. He also works as part of the marketing committee for the Osteopathic Cranial Academy Foundation, promoting osteopathy to the public and the future generation of osteopathic physicians. Enjoy the conversation.

This past weekend a few of us MSU residents decided to take a road trip to the birthplace of osteopathy – Kirksville, MO. Some of the highlights were visiting the Museum of Osteopathy, Dr. Still’s gravesite, touching theboots he wore and the staff he used. Jason, our guide, did an incredible job recounting the history and showing that although Still had his gifts he also had his limitations. I hope every osteopath is able to make it to Kirksville, and if you can’t well here are a few stories to share what it’s like.

His life evolves around love, love for self and love for the patient in front of him. One of his mentors the great Robert Fulford, DO said love holds everything together. All people are loveablebecause of their inherent health however great or little it may be. The person’s health, according to Dr. Friedman is vastly more intelligent than the provider. In his practice the provider is to be in tune with health or in tune with what may be lacking inherent motion. This health is perceived through “Stillness”. Perception,he says, is not a projection. Perception is not willed. Perception should be of what is true. Enjoy this conversation which bounces between the physical and spiritual.

He is an internist whose heart lies in the philosophy of osteopathy. He reminds us medicine is both art and science. For both him and Dr. Still, osteopathy begins with anatomy. He visualizes the anatomy as he treats the patient, restoring motion and more specifically the blood flow. You must know anatomy to find and help restore health. Throughout his many years of clinical experiences working as an internist and understanding disease processes, he has trained himself to palpate and understand visceral somatic dysfunction. Hehas a reverence for the patient in front of him, listening and allowing the body to tell him what it needs. He attracts crowds of students during the Evening with the Stars, at the annual convocation so much so that students have asked him to come to teach at their medical school. Our topic for Philosteopathy this month was Myofascial Pain Syndrome. The concept has been around since the 1960’s. We discussed some of the possible etiologies from the Travell trigger points to overuse syndromes, ROM loss, Autoimmune Disease, low Vit D, side effects of statin drugs, straining the fascial system with poor posture and psycho-emotional trauma. We spoke about how chronic myofascial pain may lead to central sensitization – a cycle of negative emotions and thoughts reiterating the narrative of your pain. The thoughts of “I am damaged, I am broken, or I cannot get better” being played over and over in one’s head. An important aspect of addressing our patient’s myofascial pain is listening to the patient’s words, observing their behaviors and slowly addressing their fears if they are ready. This often means addressing their pain with many different modalities such as manipulation or injections. Although the keystone to a positive outcome seems to be empowering the patient to take ownership of their health to change their identity. Enjoy the conversation on Myofascial Pain!

She is the “Multidimensional MD” who looks at the person from the perspective of Mind, Body and Spirit. She spoke to us about the subtle layer of emotion that is stored in the body and can be palpated just like bone, membrane and fluid. As the cofounder of the “Dig On Series” she is teaching the medical community about this subtle palpable layer in the body. How do you feel this you may ask? For Chinese medicine the liver is a source of rage. After experiencing a liver infection while traveling in India and a bought of rage while being treated months later in France, he began asking himself where this rage came from. He traced it back to his early childhood. As a French Osteopath he now treats children with emotional disorders. As he places his hands on them, he puts his intention on the entanglement of the mind – body – and spirit. He has learned how emotions from the past may be held in the body and released later sometimes through osteopathic treatments. She is a wife, mom of a 17 year old, physician leader and educator who has a keen awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion. Throughout her medical practice she has found many of her patient’s hold their life stress in their trapezius, jaws, stomach and head. She doesn’t ignore these areas of restriction but also understands the person has spirit and mental health is an essential component of wellbeing. In this conversation we spoke about the Center for Neuromusculoskeletal Center for Research at MSU. As practitioners who use OMT, we do not simply improve joint mobility, release muscle and fascial tension. We also engage the central nervous system of the person we are treating. This interaction and feedback system is quite difficult to measure. What about other tests such as the stork test, the standing and seated flexion test, how do these work and what information do they give us? There is no question many patients’ benefit from the work we do. At the same time, it is easy to not be intellectually curious and challenge our treatment techniques when patients are getting better and praising our work. On the flip side what about those patients that did not get better or fell off our schedule. What did we do wrong, why was it not helpful? Perhaps Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine is one of the best kept secrets in medicine. Part of the goal of this podcast is to expose this secret, but there is much groundwork we need to do to better quantify our work, but at this point in time not all of it seems to be quantifiable. He has been practicing medicine for 40 years and has had as a career goal that of bringing the spirituality of the person into mainstream medicine. He specifies this is not a religious experience per se, but a realization we are more than body. He has dedicated his career to studying this phenomenon. For Dr. King the mind is the mental, emotion and psychological experience of the person. The spirit is the attitude or perspective with which one goes through life.  He says, moving the joints, muscles and tendons is easy, the challenge for the osteopath is figuring out how to keep it there. There were serendipitous moments in his life which led to the development of Foundation Training. Living a very active life and then having back pain himself at a very young age. Going to Chiropractic school 20 min away from the training facilities of the US Olympic Water Polo team. Having the opportunity to introduce the team to what would become Foundation Training. These are just a few of these serendipitous moments. He and his college friend and former fire fighter Jessie Salas, now form this power duo, taking FT all throughout the US and world. This was a really fun conversation and it’s always a pleasure to speak to people who are passionate about what they do. With her love for hospital medicine, internal medicine was a natural choice. When the house is on fire western medicine does well at putting the fire out. When you want to rebuild the house alternative forms of medicine are great options. Western medicine and alternative forms of medicine like OMT workhand in hand. Dr. Dean herself suffered from severe Guillain Barre which forced her to close her internal medicine OMT practice.  She was treated with cranial osteopathy by an ONMM physician during her illness which she says caused her seizures to diminish. The experience of OMT improved her quality of life so much she chose to go back to ONMM residency. Now she provides this service to patients at the hospital. The science of osteopathy is the science of supportive care. It’s tapping into the pharmacy within. Still has given us a philosophy of treatment – find the health by using manipulation to remove obstruction to the body and allowing nature to take its course. On the other hand, why do so many of us have unhealthy habits? The answer may lie in the trauma we all have experienced to different degrees. For Dr. Pohlod it is the Biblical story which contains truths which lead people to overcome their trauma. The analogy of the Good Shephard is one of these key Biblical stories for healing. What about the population who is not Christian or Atheist? He responds by saying “the curious person heals, where the judging person divides.” Listening and allowing the person to be seen should never be underestimated. We as physicians should be champions of health and advocates to our patients. If you would like to reach out to Dr. Pohlod you may at: pohlodch@msu.edu--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/benjamin--greene/message

As an osteopathic physician he wants to get to the bottom of WHY people feel the way they do. His clinic research and practice has led him to believe that all physical ailments have their origin in the mind particularly the unconscious mind. This has led him to pursue a better understanding of the human mind and in March he will be finishing his Masters in Humanistic Psychology. He believes in what he calls a “somato-emotional reflex. In other words, tension in one area of the body will influence the entire body because the body is a whole. Muscular tension is the somatic side of repression. Our musculoskeletal system absorbs our emotional strife. It’s the emotional landfill. But before change can happen there must be acceptance. Dr. Veneziano is living her life on earth in a meaningful way; aligning with nature to be of service to those around her. Each day she connects to her body to navigate the world, trusting her intuition. She says, thinking from the guidance of an awake body, feeds the brain. There is a need to reset and reorient to our original feeling body. All living being exists in their most basic form as waves in motion in harmony or discord. In other words, health is a function of autonomic stability. When the body comes into a state of energy coherence the autonomic nervous system comes into balance. This she calls integration of the subtle body with the physical body. All healing whether it’s acupuncture, PT or OMT the end goal is to bring the body into oneness. His medical journey began while on a repelling adventure in undergrad, when he helped rescue an injured climber who had fallen 80 ft. Following this experience, he began his medical journey. Dr. Stiles taught him Sequencing – the application of osteopathic principles to any part of the body rather than learning a series of techniques. It was not love at first sight. There was some head scratching and questioning about why OMT worked, without satisfactory answers. It took dedicated reading and a mentor like Phil Greenman, D.O. to demonstrate and explain why and how OMT works. Dr. Greenman lives on through Dr. DeStefano as she strives to teach the next generation of osteopathic physicians about OMT. For her OMT is not about learning osteopathic modalities, rather importance should be given to a detailed and comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy, a profound understanding of the arthrokinematics reflex of joints and how this may inhibit muscles. The end goal is improving a patient’s function and thereby improving their quality of life. Email: DSTEFANO@msu.edu. It all started with the 4 tenets of Osteopathic Medicine (The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.)
