He completes almost fifty visits annually—from parades to hospitals, and seniors’ homes to special events. He has had over 1,500 visits with Santa. He is the only living Canadian Santa inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame. He is also a Knight of St. Nicholas.

Newfoundland Photographer K. Bruce Lane has been taking photographs since his parents gave him his first Brownie back in the seventies. His recent book is a compilation of photos from Dildo, NL.
Dildo is a community in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. This book offers a photographic tour of the charming, vibrant town located in Trinity Bay, about eighty kilometres west of St. John’s. Dildo’s unusual name has brought it a certain amount of notoriety. In August 2019, the American late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! focused on Dildo over a number of episodes. As part of the activity, which brought the small rural community immediate international fame, host Jimmy Kimmel was made honorary mayor of Dildo. Kimmel declared Hollywood as Dildo’s sister city.
Todd Boland is the research horticulturist at the Memorial University Botanical Garden. Back in 2009, 55 year old Evelyn Ramsay and her friend Peggy Parker, saddled up their Harleys and hit the open road. They shipped their bikes from Halifax, NS, to Calgary, AB, and set out on the trip of a lifetime through the USA. Two Women Two Harleys. It’s not a book, but it is a story.
Harry Ingram was born and raised in Arnold's Cove Placentia Bay, or as Ray Guy would call it, “That far greater bay”. Reciting and telling stories have always been a core element of Harry’s upbringing. In his younger years he was never shy of a joke, story or recitation at a family function or kitchen party. He has always enjoyed sharing the works of others who have paved the way in this genre, however in recent years he has been putting pen to paper and writing his own material. Harry has grown into an accomplished entertainer on various stages sharing his works alongside Hubert Furey, Dave Paddon and Dave Penny as the popular “From Stage to Stage” group and more recently with Ken Parsons as part of “The Liar’s Bench Show”
Justin B. Hodder wants to take his readers on an adventure around the world. His protagonist, Emily Owens, is an archaeologist who yearns for adventure and a chance to prove herself. Much like Justin, who decided to write a book and carved out the time between his busy schedule. He sourced editors, designers and a printer. It’s been quite a learning experience for him and he’s sharing his story with us today.

Dr. Hodder is 82 years old but perpetually young. My first interview with him was in 2017 when he launched his first book, Follow Your Bliss. Having grown up in a very small community in Newfoundland, he was the only graduate in his grade 11 class. Yet he went on to become a teacher and then, for forty-five years, a family physician. In this episode we talk about why he writes and how to collect stories from a lifetime of living and consolidate them into a book. In this instance, Leftover Stew, his latest release is compiled of new material along with “leftovers” from his first book which was, at 500 pages, not able to accommodate anything more. I enjoyed our discussion so much, we spontaneously shot Part 2. Interesting fact: the proceeds from his books go to charity. Carolyn R. Parsons is a proud fisherman’s daughter born and raised on Change Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador. She spent twenty-five years in Ontario, returned home to Newfoundland in 2012, and now resides in Lewisporte.
An advocate for social issues, she was co-chair and spokesperson for the Manolis L Citizens Response Committee, which lobbied government to remove oil that threatened the marine environment from the sunken cargo ship in Notre Dame Bay. She penned a regular community column entitled “Connections,” a biweekly arts feature, “In Conversation,” and wrote general news for the Pilot.
Today she writes a weekly column, “Art & Soul,” for the Central Voice and co-hosts an online radio program, Bridges. A founding director of Literary Events NL, she also serves as the current Central/Burin representative for the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL).
Carolyn is married to Kent Chaffey, also a Change Islander, and they have four daughters and three grandchildren. In the past decade, she has written a poetry collection, two novels, and a book of short stories. The Forbidden Dreams of Betsy Elliott is her debut novel with Flanker Press.
My first guest on today’s show, Keith Mercer, was born in Gander. NL, and currently lives in Bedford, NS. He holds graduate degrees in history from Memorial and Dalhousie Universities and currently works for Parks Canada as the Cultural Resource Manager in Mainland Nova Scotia based at Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. He’s an historian and the ideal person to write a book called Rough Justice on the early history of policing and crime in Newfoundland.

It is currently being adapted to film. Her second novel, Some People’s Children, was a finalist for the 2020 BMO Winterset Award and the Thomas Raddall Award.
Bridget holds a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing from Memorial University and a Masters of Literacy Education from Mount Saint Vincent University. In 2019, she received the CBC Emerging Artist Award with ArtsNL. She grew up in Highlands, NL and currently lives in St. John’s.

Running the Goat Books & Broadsides is as unique as its owner. Marnie Parsons started by making hand-crafted books and broadsides. She describes that as a true labour of love – love for the work being published, and also love for the book or broadside as an aesthetic object. Each aspect of the ancient craft involves intimate hands-on engagement, including setting the type letter by letter, printing it page by page, and binding.
“It’s this kind of freedom,” she says, “that makes small presses cutting edge, free to be idiosyncratic and experimental without worrying about the conventions and assumptions that inhibit mainstream presses.”
In talking to her about her passion for historic printing processes, it also becomes obvious that it’s not the best model to reach mainstream markets which is why her company has also focused on the children’s book market in Canada, the United States and now England.
But one thing remains true to both her historic and modern printing passions; her children’s books offer beautiful language, wonderful illustrations and are finely designed and printed.

A former columnist, editorial writer, essayist, and award-winning poet, Strowbridge has won the NL Arts and Letters Awards a record seventeen times. Al Purdy included her in the Sandburg Livesay Award Anthology No Choice but to Trust, featuring outstanding populist poets around the world. She has been Writer in the Library, a mentor to young writers, an adjudicator in the NL Arts and Letters Awards, an assessor on the NL Projects Grants Committee, and a judge for the WANL Book Awards and Fresh Fish Awards. Strowbridge has held school workshops in Canada and Ireland and hosted a Seminar/Gabfest for International Women’s Day in Cobh, where she was writer-in-residence. The Canadian Embassy in Dublin sponsored a reading and reception for her. She also read from her work during a Scotland bus tour.

Hold Fast for today’s interview. (That’s a hint, by the way.) Today my guest is well-known to most people. He’s the author of more than twenty books for both young people and adults. He has won numerous awards in Canada - too many for me to list but they will be in his biography below and his work has been translated into several languages. How cool is that? Meet Kevin Major.
It’s not always that you get to sit down with (albeit, virtually) an author who has had such a profound influence on the literature of our province, Newfoundland and Labrador, to say nothing of Canadian literature. In this delightful chat, Kevin and I discuss how writing in our province has evolved over the years and how he has maintained his enthusiasm for his profession. His latest books are part of a series that not only introduces a witty new protagonist who happens to be that unique combination of a tour guide and a private investigator. He also drops some great tips for aspiring writers and talks about his stint as an historian on I hope you enjoy the show and please share your comments and let me know from where in the world you are watching!
Here is my guest’s impressive biography.
Kevin Major is the author of 20+ books, for both young people and adults. The first, Hold Fast, won several awards in Canada and was placed on the Hans Christian Andersen Honour List. It was released in 2014 as a feature film. His second book, Far From Shore, was the winner of the first Canadian Young Adult Book Award. Others which followed include Blood Red Ochre and Eating Between the Lines, winner of the CACL Book-of-the-Year Award.
In 1992 Kevin was given the Vicky Metcalf Award, for an outstanding body of work of significance to young people. The languages into which his work has been translated include French, Danish, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hebrew.
An adult novel, No Man's Land, about the Newfoundland Regiment in World War I, was published in 1995 to much acclaim. Kevin’s adaption of the story was brought to the stage by Rising Tide Theatre and has played for more than a dozen years.
His more recent books include the Christmas classic The House of Wooden Santas, and a history of Newfoundland and Labrador: As Near To Heaven By Sea (a Canadian best-seller and finalist for the Pearson Non-Fiction Prize). Ann and Seamus, a verse novel released in 2003 was shortlisted for a total of ten awards. It has since been turned into an opera. The adult novel New Under the Sun was published in 2010, book one of a trilogy of historical fiction. The second, Found Far and Wide, was released in 2016, and the third, Land Beyond the Sea, in 2019.
In 2018 Kevin started the Sebastian Synard series of crime novels with One for the Rock. Two for the Tablelands followed in 2020. The third will arrive in bookstores in the fall of 2021.
Kevin has been named Memorial University’s Alumnus-of-the-Year, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council’s Artist-of-the-Year . He has been awarded an honourary degree by Memorial University.
John Moss, writing in “A Reader's Guide to the Canadian Novel,” has said, "Kevin Major is among the best Canadian writers of his generation. He has established himself as a figure of singular importance in our literature."

That’s exactly what I got to do in this recent interview with Jerry Cranford of Flanker Press. My guest’s first book, Dirty Birds, was long-listed for Canada Reads 2021 and the past few months have been an exciting time for him. Join me as I sit down with Morgan Murray and learn about his writing journey and how Dirty Birds came to be.
Morgan Murray grew up on a farm near the same backwoods central Alberta village as figure-skating legend Kurt Browning. He now lives in the backwoods of Cape Breton with his wife, cartoonist Kate Beaton, Mary the baby, Agnes the dog, Reggie the cat, Peggy the ditch kitten, and six chickens without names because they all look alike. In between, he has been a farmer, a rancher, a roustabout, a secretary, a reporter, a designer, a Tweeter, a tour guide, a schemer, a variety show host, and a student in Caroline, Calgary, Paris, Prague, Montreal, Chicoutimi, and St. John's. He has a BA in Canadian Studies from the University of Calgary, a Certificate in Central and Eastern European Studies from the University of Economics, Prague, a MPhil in Humanities from Memorial University of Newfoundland, and a participation ribbon for beef calf showmanship (incomplete) from the Little Britches 4-H Club, Caroline, Alberta. His writing has been rejected by some of North America’s top publications, and has appeared in a bunch of other places like The Scope, The Walrus, Newfoundland Quarterly, and Echolocation. His short story “KC Accidental” won the Broken Social Scene Story Contest in 2013, and was anthologized in Racket: New Writing from Newfoundland in 2015. His first novel, Dirty Birds has gotten him compared to Kurt Vonnegut, somehow..

It was high energy when I welcomed Susan Flanagan, author, to this episode of Let’s Get Writing. Her new book, Supermarket Baby, is a fun satirical read and it will put you off cart switches forever. Susan Flanagan has worked as a freelance journalist (BJ, King’s College, NS, 1991) in St. John’s and Halifax for 30 years. Her non-fiction works have appeared in Canadian Geographic, Canadian Running, National Geographic (maps), Newfoundland Quarterly, The Hockey News, Doctors’ Review, Atlantic Progress, Atlantic Business, Saltscapes and Nelson Literacy’s high school textbook, Homegrown.
Susan has two novels hitting the shelves in 2021: Supermarket Baby, winner 2019 Percy Janes First Novel Award (Flanker Press), and her first YA novel, The Degrees of Barley Lick (Running the Goat Books & Broadsides). She is currently working on her third novel, Digital Detox, set in Battle Harbour, Labrador.

Sarah Thompson is a former radio broadcaster and journalist from Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. She was first published in the Engen Books compilation light/dark in 2010 with the science fiction story "REMERS."
She has two books currently available:
The Love of Summer and The Love of Julia. She is a romance writer in the sub-genre of lesbian fiction. While lesbian fiction may have started off accompanied by a bit of a stigma, today it’s a wildly popular genre that has audiences captivated across the globe.

Jessica Mitton is from, Cow Head, NL, but is currently living in Moncton, NB. She is the author of the hit cookbook, Some Good, which was shortlisted for a Taste Canada award, and she speaks with Kathryn about her newest release, Some Good: Sweet Treats.'
Jessica Mitton is a Culinary Nutrition Expert and an award-winning Certified Holistic Nutritional Consultant. She has been featured across many publications and media channels, including the Academy of Culinary Nutrition's “From Scratch” cookbooks, CBC Radio, and the national magazine, Optimyz. Jessica is the author of the hit cookbook, Some Good, which was shortlisted for a Taste Canada award, and her newest release, Some Good: Sweet Treats is being released in September 2020.
Kathryn enjoyed talking to her about her “tasteful” job of making successful cookbooks. Jessica’s cookbooks feature Gluten Free and Dairy Free recipes as well as many tips to take the challenge out of cooking this way. Learn tips to help you craft a successful children’s book with first-time authors, Jennifer and Adam Young from Fogo Island, NL.
Imagine living on an island off the coast of an island. Imagine being an artist on that island with your own art gallery. Imagine being a writer. Sound incredible? Well, that’s life for my guests, who live on Fogo Island with their two daughters, Scout and Bella, and their dog, Johnny Cash. They are the authors of The Little Red Shed, a most endearing children’s book with a good message for all of us. Meet the husband and wife team of Adam and Jennifer Young.
Both are educators but now are also authors as well as owners of Young Studios, where Adam creates and sells his beautiful, colourful and whimsical depictions of eastern Canada (mainly Newfoundland, these days). Born in Halifax, Adam met Jennifer who was from Joe Batt’s Arm, a small community on Fogo Island. Their love and love of place brought them back to Newfoundland where they are living the life of their dreams in a stunning, yet stark environment that inspires all they do and brings great happiness and freedom to their family.
His colourful art is an important part of this engaging story of a little red shed that discovers it’s okay to be different. Their enthusiasm and experiences will warm your heart and inspire ideas.
Adam Young is best known for his whimsical and colourful depictions of Eastern Canada, specifically Newfoundland. He was born in Halifax, NS, raised in Moncton, NB and has been living on Fogo Island, off the northeast coast of Newfoundland since 2008. He completed his BFA at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB (2003). He went on to completed his BEd (Crandall University, Moncton 2007) and MEd (Memorial University, St.John’s 2016). Adam started his artistic career as a freelance illustrator for newspapers and magazines throughout Canada but his professional body of work began after his first visit to Newfoundland in 2005.
Inspiration for Adam’s work comes from the stark beauty of the landscape, architecture and the warmth of the people who live here. His mediums of choice are acrylics and inks and focus on the elements of light, repetition, movement and colour. The fishing stage and/or saltbox house is a common theme within most of Adam’s paintings which takes the place as the absent figure. The little colourful shacks embody a playful feeling of curiosity and wonder as they balance on the rocky and sometimes harsh coastline of the North Atlantic. Adam lives on Fogo Island, NL with his wife Jennifer, their daughters Bella and Scout and dog Johnny Cash.

Gemma Hickey is a passionate humanist who has raised awareness for survivors of clergy abuse and who has also expanded rights for the LGBTQ2+ community in Canada. In this show Gemma discusses their physical and personal journey while walking across the island of Newfoundland and the book that chronicled this passage, Almost Feral.
Gemma Hickey is a passionate humanist whose activism has changed the legal landscape of Canada, expanding rights, equality and dignity for the LGBTQ2+ community and raising awareness for survivors of clergy abuse. Since 2010, they have been Executive Director of For the Love of Learning, a non-profit that works to forge new paths for at-risk youth by advancing their literacy and creative skills. In 2013, Gemma created the Pathways Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports survivors of clergy abuse. To promote awareness and raise funds for the cause, they walked 938 kilometres across Newfoundland in July 2015. Gemma’s physical and personal journey through gender transformation is the subject of Just Be Gemma, a documentary produced by Nine Island Communications. As a well-known force for change, Gemma co-led the movement that legalized same-sex marriage in Canada in 2005. In 2017, their request for a gender-neutral birth certificate spurred Newfoundland and Labrador to change its law, and Gemma became the first person in Canada to receive a non-binary birth certificate. A strong believer in ongoing learning and individual growth, Gemma lives in St. John’s, where they are currently working on a Master’s degree in Gender Studies at Memorial University.

This show looks at the art of playwriting with actor/writer/director Paul David Power. His original play, Crippled, is a personal story that grew from his need to deal with grief after the sudden loss of his partner. Paul is also an inspiration for his work as an artist living with a disability.
Paul David Power has spent the past 20 years working as a writer, actor, director and communications professional in various mediums and for diverse organizations - including dramatic script for the stage. His formal training includes holding a BA in English with a concentration in theatre and a BAA in Journalism. Paul has a long history in raising awareness and understanding about disability issues through his work as a playwright, columnist, director and actor.
His work includes several years directing and acting with the Shakespeare by the Sea Festival in Newfoundland and Labrador where he currently holds the position of Artistic Associate. He was President of the Liffey Players Drama Society in Calgary for three years. In 2010 Paul moved to Moncton NB where he assumed the role of Artistic Director for Hubcity Theatre in 2013. He held that position for four years. Paul currently heads his own production company - Power Productions - which offers corporate communications services as well as producing theatre projects focused on deaf and disability themes.
Along with "Crippled", Paul's other produced works as a playwright include the award-winning "Roomies" and "Last Chance".
Paul has been highlighted in the media many times for his work as an artist living with a disability - often inspiring and leading the way for younger artists who face their own challenges and disabilities when it comes to succeeding in the arts.
Paul is one of 13 Deaf, disabled and Mad Arts Leaders from across the country who participated in the National Art Centre's 2016 -2017 Cycle. The Cycle was a year-long process that explored diversity in our national theatre scene and how artists can work to expand and strengthen disability arts in Canada. The process concluded in Ottawa in July 2017 with The Republic of Inclusion. A long time ago MaryBob was living the American Dream until she wasn’t. She felt trapped by convention and longed to explore what life could be. She describes herself as having an insatiable curiosity and we all know that curiosity killed the cat. In MaryBob’s case, it certainly led her on a challenging, at times heart wrenching but, ultimately, fulfilling journey to find herself.

He started as a self-published author who eventually learned the business from the ground up and opened his own publishing company. Technology has brought a big change to the industry and our discussion covers this evolution as well as the transition into the digital marketplace.
