In O Sinners! a young journalist, reeling from loss, investigates a mysterious cult in the California redwoods, only to be drawn in by its charismatic leader—an addictive novel that asks why people give up control and what it takes, ultimately, to find your place in the world.
Cuffy is the author of Dances, longlisted for the Carol Shields prize for fiction and the Pen/Hemingway award. Cuffy has a MFA from The New School. She is a lecturer at the University of Maryland and American University. Her work can be found in Mason’s Road, The Master’s Review Volume VI (curated by Roxane Gay), Chautauqua, and Blue Mesa Review, and her chapbook, Atlas of the Body, won the Chautauqua Janus Prize and was a finalist for the Black River Chapbook Competition.

Welcome to Poppin' Off! In this episode we welcome Rufi Thorpe, author of Margo's Got Money Troubles & The Knockout Queen, to the Bubbles & Books podcast! Thorpe is an author both Amanda & Ellyn talk about often after they bonded over their love of The Knockout Queen. Most recently Amanda has been working through some of Rufi's other backlist books. When Margo was announced as a forthcoming novel, both Amanda and Ellyn knew without question they were going to get a favorite book of the year.
Rufi Thorpe received her MFA from the University of Virginia in 2009. She is the author of three other novels, The Girls from Corona Del Mar, Dear Fang, With Love, The Knockout Queen, which was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award.
It was a joy to have Rufi join us and we can't wait to see what she writes next!

Summer is fast upon us and at Dog-Eared we're gearing up for our summer reading challenges. We of course are doing our classic kids Cheesy Reading Challenge, in which kids can read towards a goal of earning a free small one-topping pizza from Great Plains Sauce & Dough. Introducing the two middle-est readers, the "Jans" if you will, the glue that holds the sandwich together, the middle children of Dog-Eared Book's co-owners, Flora and Atticus.

Beyond the Bookends Reading Challenge
In our last episode we shared the lists of other peoples "best of the year" books. This week we're telling you what the Dog-Eared team has deemed the "best of the year". Yes we know 2022 isn't quite over yet, but we're just so excited about these books that we must share them with you now.

There are many underrepresented communities! A library which includes titles that feature disabled characters, for example, should include stories that center a wide range of disabilities rather than those we believe are the most common or with which we are the most familiar.
It’s vital that the students in one’s classroom have access to representative literature. Remembering that many identities and experiences are “invisible” is helpful to avoid creating collections based on what we believe we know about the people we are serving.

Last week our community faced a tragedy due to gun violence. We continue to implore you to call your representatives and ask for change to be made.

Storytelling allows all experiences to be shared and consumed by readers who many need those stories, or to help people better understand someone else's experience from our own. We stand by those with uteruses making decisions for themselves.
How do you organize your bookshelves? Is it by alphabetical order, color coordinated, height or maybe something else? This week Ellyn & Amanda share their shelf (or lack of) organization. They'll chat about all the ways in which they like to store books, if they're someone who collects multiple copies or what they think of certain methods of organization. We have a busy few weeks coming up at the store, so Ellyn decided that for today's episode to play a game with Amanda called "Thriller or Romance". For this game Ellyn searched the interwebs to find the most ridiculous thriller book and romance book titles so she could dramatically read the to Amanda and have her guess what type of book it is. And it's not as easy as it may sound.
