Becoming a physician assistant (PA) is difficult. But becoming a PA on the way to financial independence (FI) shouldn’t be. Allow the PA the FI Way podcast to be your guide to becoming a physician assistant on the way to financial independence.

Unfortunately, even basic personal finance and budget concepts are rarely taught in high school, college or PA school. Then once PA students become certified physician assistants and begin their professional journey practicing medicine, they typically have a heap of student loans just waiting to be paid back. Let’s not only discuss how to prevent large student loan amounts, but also how to pay them back quickly. Let’s discuss how practicing PAs can learn to save and invest for their futures. PA the FI Way’s mission is to provide both future and current PAs alike strategies to not only become financially literate, but to also reach financial independence along the way. Think of it as personal finance for PAs with a financial independence twist. Financial independence provides the freedom to find balance in work and personal life.

FI is about creating the life you want to live, choosing when to retire (IF you want to retire early), choosing when to cut back on working, or choosing when to work on another passion in your life. The decision truly is yours, and I hope you decide to join me on the journey to becoming a PA the FI Way.

Time is life’s most precious, nonrenewable resource. Once time has passed, there is no getting that time back. Although many of us wish that time travel was a possibility at one point in our life or another, the reality is that it simply is not a tool that we can use to go back in time or go into the future.

So if we can all agree that our time is a precious commodity, why is it that we don’t treat our time with the upmost respect? Why do we waste our own time, or even worse, let others waste our time? Why is it that we don’t view our time spent with others in our lives, such as our dear family and friends, as something we should prioritize and cherish? Maybe it’s because we can’t wrap our heads around how truly fleeting our time here on earth is. Maybe it’s because we’re young, and think we have all the time in the world. Maybe it’s because we are confident that we will see our family members and friends many more times in the future. Unfortunately, these things aren’t always true.

This episode may cause some of you to feel a twinge of depression or anxiety. However, my hope is that it serves to open your eyes while motivating and encouraging you to make the choices and take the necessary actionable steps to be able to spend your time as you please throughout your life.

The NHSC Loan Repayment Program is a federal program that helps qualified healthcare workers like physician assistants / physician associates, physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, and behavioral health workers who work in certain specialties (mostly primary care areas of medicine and mental health) pay back their student loan debt. However, there are considerations that make it not seem so appealing. Take a listen to hear my story as to why I ultimately declined the award after applying.

Gaby went from being a registered dietician and diabetes educator to practicing as a PA, and was able to double her income with this transition and additional training. She then used her background, networking, and connections, to design a balance of practicing both in clinic as a primary care and urgent PA in addition to practicing telemedicine from home as a maternal fetal medicine (MFM) PA.

Gaby is a newer mom, and feels like the balance that these two roles provide helps her to spend more time with her daughter. Her unique background helped her to add the MFM role to her primary care role, where she is able to care for diabetic patients in a variety of ways.

Gaby also hosts The Making of a Physician Assistant podcast, so be sure to check out her show as well! You can also follow and connect with her on Instagram or TikTok (@itsgabythepa), or reach out by email to itsgabythepa@gmail.com

Do you want some motivation on your journey to becoming debt free as a PA (physician associate / physician assistant)? Take a listen to hear the story of how PA Nicole and her supportive husband, Anthony, paid off their debt aggressively to become debt free all while starting their family.

A large portion of their debt was Nicole's student loan debt from PA school, and they formulated a plan together to pay off their debt as a team. They discuss how they like to do check-ins, which are often mini vacations, to discuss their finances and connect. This is a concept that I absolutely love and will try to implement with my husband.

Nicole and Anthony also share about their experience with investing in real estate by purchasing rentals... and then making the decision to eventually sell them. They discuss their recent strategies to building their net worth on their journey to financial independence, which includes investing in businesses!

You'll find this episode so informative and inspirational that you'll want to share it with your PA friends, PA colleagues, and spouse / partners as you all work on becoming debt free.

Research studies done several years ago by a psychologist named Martin Seligman on dogs revealed a concept called learned helplessness. This idea can explain why some physician assistants / physician associates act in ways that others don't understand, such as why they are staying in a toxic role that is contributing to their burnout symptoms.

In order to live an intentional life as a current or future PA, you need to incorporate lifestyle design into your life. Lifestyle design is the process of designing the life that you want to live that aligns with your values and purpose.

Recently, my family and I took a rented RV on a roadtrip from MN to CO to visit the mountains and some beautiful national parks. It was certainly an adventure with 7 humans, 1 dog, in a 31 ft. RV for 9 days. In this episode, I provide a recap of the trip and discuss the lessons learned as well as how you can utilize the concept of lifestyle design to explore different ways of how you may want your life to look.

Have you ever heard your parents give you a financial recommendation that seemed as though it was a bit "old school"? You may have thought, "Hmm... that may have worked for you, but that doesn't seem as though it would help me in these times." It is wedding season, and many PAs tend to get married right after PA school. A few other PAs will even get married in the midst of PA school! Weddings can be magical and memorable, as well as unfortunately very expensive. However, the overall cost is actually in your control to decide how much you and your (future) spouse would like to spend.

As with many budgeting and financial areas of life, consider what you will truly value on your wedding day, and spend on those things while cutting costs in the other areas that don't mean as much to you. Your special day will fly by, so ask yourself, "Do I really want to spend THAT much money for one day?"

In this episode, you'll find some creative ideas of how you can have a lovely wedding day, a beautiful engagement ring, as well as many wonderful memories without breaking the bank.

Did you make it to the AAPA Conference 2022 this week in Indianapolis, or are you planning on attending next year in Nashville? In this episode, I share some of the highlights of this years' conference as well as what you can expect when you attend an AAPA conference as a physician associate / physician assistant.

During the conference this year, it was so interesting to hear Simone Biles and Jane Pauley discuss their mental health journeys over the years. Hayley Arceneaux then shared her incredible story of being a pediatric cancer survivor, working for St. Jude's as a PA, then getting to be part of the SpaceX Inspiration 4 team where she was the first PA in space as their medical officer. She is such an inspiration and an example of a PA doing some pretty cool stuff!

This episode was prompted by a question asked in the PA the FI Way Facebook group that was created for current and future PAs interested in financial independence. If you haven't already, feel free to join! Interestingly enough, several high-income professionals besides physicians may qualify for "physician loans", including PAs, depending on the lender. However, would pursuing a physician loan be wise for a new grad PA? As with many topics in personal finance, there are several pros and cons to consider, and the decision really is a personal one. Physician loans may seem more appealing on the surface than what the details actually show once you dig deeper.

Sponsor for today's show: StudentLoanAdvice.com can help you assess your specific student loan situation as a new grad PA to help you formulate a plan to pay back your student loans in the most cost-effective, and efficient way!

Most PAs graduate from PA school with over six figures of student loan debt! There are so many options to pay back your debt, some of which can include trading your service as a PA to have your student loans forgiven such as PSLF. Another plan may include refinancing with a private lender for a lower interest rate, but in some cases, it may make sense to actually keep federal student loans. For some, an IDR plan may be a better fit. How in the world do you decide which option for loan repayment is best for you?

Andrew Paulson, CSLP, co-founded StudentLoanAdvice.com, which is a trusted White Coat Investor company, and advises PAs and other health care providers on formulating a plan to help manage and pay back their student loan debt. He is incredibly knowledgeable in regards to all of the repayment options so you can feel comfortable knowing that you made the best decision to save on costs when tackling all of your debt!

Have you considered taking a sabbatical at some point during your career as a PA (physician assistant / physician associate)? Or maybe you thought sabbaticals were only for professors and that you couldn't take one as a PA? This episode with Shayne Foley, PA-C, reviews how you can take a sabbatical (or a few!) during your career as a PA, as well as what some of the benefits of sabbaticals are. Shayne also shares all the details of the logistics of planning and executing sabbaticals! A sabbatical could be used as a tool to fight burnout, but more importantly, can help you enjoy the journey to FI (financial independence) instead of postponing enjoyment and travel until you reach FI.

Should you try to time the market in hopes of buying high and selling low? Or should you try to switch your money around between asset classes in hopes that one will do better because you heard it's the latest craze? If you can't time travel to have the benefit of hindsight or don't have a crystal ball, then the answer is likely no. As a current or future physician assistant, you're likely pretty bright, but did you know that most financial professionals can't time the market well enough to beat the market? In addition to market timing, this episode also reviews how you can use the concept of opportunity cost to better analyze the choice between two options.

The topics of dividends and diversification are discussed in today's episode. Some investments pay out dividends, which can be another way for your investments to earn more over time. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that you should be chasing stocks with only high dividend yields. Diversification in your portfolio may help provide less risk over time, and can help make your wealth building over time to be less bumpy.

Compound interest, which has been dubbed the 8th wonder of the world by Albert Einstein, needs time to grow its magical gains. Which group of people likely has the most time in the world to benefit from the effects of compound interest? Children, of course! Once you start becoming financially literate, you may likely start thinking about the kiddos in your life, whether they be your own children, nieces or nephews, or even grandchildren, and think, “If only they could start investing for their futures at such a young age! They would be set for life!” Well, here’s some exciting news: both you and they could potentially start saving and investing for their futures!

In this episode, the follow 4 accounts are reviewed to save and invest for your child: HYSA (high yield savings account), 529 plan, UGMA / UTMA, and custodial Roth IRA.

As a current or future PA, you are likely a pretty giving and selfless person, so you are probably very excited to start investing in the future if your children. However, it is very important first put on your own oxygen mask, meaning, ensure that you are first set up to reach financial independence in the future prior to helping out your kiddos.

If your child(ren) get one or even all 4 of these accounts set up to save and invest, then think of how much their wealth may build with time due to compound interest!

Justin Chidester, CFP, AFC, founder of Wealth Mode Financial Planning reviews with us the benefits of working with a fee-only fiduciary financial planner. He also covers some red flags to watch out for when considering whether you should work with a financial advisor. I share my story of how my husband and I worked with another type of "financial advisor" for several years, until we figured out that we should FIRE him once we decided to pursue FI (pun intended).

Justin can help current and future PAs run the numbers while formulating a plan to tackle their student loans, as well as develop a plan for investing for the future, if you desire expert professional guidance. Many of his clients are between 27 and 35 years old, and he has worked with several in healthcare, including physician assistants.

"Health" is not only comprised of your physical health, but rather, several types of health need to be optimized to truly help your overall health. Don't neglect your health on your journey to FI, or you may end up being too depressed or too physically unhealthy to even enjoy early retirement if you decide to retire early once you reach FI!

Did you know that as a PA, there are several different ways that you can be compensated? Your income may not be as clearcut as getting paid via hourly pay or via a salary. In this episode, the various compensation models that physician assistants can get paid will be reviewed as well as some of the pros and cons of each, so that you can have an understanding of these options when you are interviewing for PA jobs as a new grad or throughout your PA career!

This episode will review different compensation models such as salary, hourly, RVUs, or bonus structures.

Additionally, I’m going to share which types of compensation models that I have experienced over my almost 7 years of practicing as a PA, along with some detailed income numbers. I decided to do this simply because I think sharing income information is helpful for other PAs, and I don’t think it’s done enough. However, income is clearly based on so many factors including the following: years of experience as a PA, medical specialty, state and even city or county within a state, as well as total compensation package including benefits.

If you're a PA student, congrats on getting accepted into a PA program!!! The next 2 - 3 years will be some of the hardest of your life, but very rewarding. During PA school, it can be very tempting to spend some of your student loans on somewhat frivolous things to "treat yo' self" with the idea that you're just borrowing from your future self. But newsflash: your monthly student loan payments may be about as much as a monthly mortgage payment! So use the information in this episode to consider how to keep costs down while in PA school to help set you up for success on your journey to reach financial independence!

Take the time to figure out your net worth by calculating your assets and liabilities so you know where you're starting from on your journey to FI. However, even if your net worth is currently a negative number, don't worry! Use it as motivation to get that number back into the black.

Once you've calculated your net worth, decide how you're going to start tracking your net worth over time. It is very encouraging and fun to see this number increase steadily! I recommend and use the free tool called Personal Capital. Sign up here to receive $20 if you link at least one valid investment account (such as a brokerage account, 401(k), IRA, etc.) containing a balance of more than $1,000 USD within 30 days of registering.

Happy net worth tracking!

It's important to consider your "why" of wanting to pursue FI (financial independence), or you may get discouraged along the way.

The first couple of steps in your FI journey are to track your expenses and calculate your net worth to see where you're starting from. Don't be discouraged if your net worth is a negative number! After reviewing your expenses, ask yourself, "Do I value the fluff?"

Next, figure out ways to cut costs, so you can save more to invest more by using various general concepts of FI. If you focus your efforts on cutting costs in The 3 Big Budget Items (Housing, Transportation, and Food), you'll supercharge your savings rate! However, it is so very important to consider what you truly do VALUE in life (personally I value awesome coffee!), so that you do not cut those things out, otherwise life satisfaction may decrease (which is the opposite effect of what pursuing FI is supposed to do!).
