Capitol Presence

We are going to push to disrupt the 5 day work week, to innovate a way of doing business and to survival. Let’s make changes in something established, amend the “normal” and introduce new methods, ideas, products and standards to ensure that our lives are taken back. Let’s explore technology, life and the world together and forever change the way we define the Modern Business Culture.

This week Roy tackles another hypothetical!

How much does that commute really cost?

Roy mentions studies showing that full-time workers in the largest cities were spending nearly an hour a day commuting. The average round trip commute in the 100 largest cities is 52 minutes, equating to an average annual opportunity cost of $5,600.

At some point, you'll be faced with the opportunity to never have to go to an office again.

With that said, hypothetically, would you take $10,000 less knowing that you're spending these things on going to the office?

View Details

On this week's episode of the Work Wherever Podcast, Roy is joined by Sydney Brown to talk remote work. They cover working from the road, the travel industry, and how cities are being built around the trend of remote work.

If you don’t work with your hands and work with your brain, you can work remotely!

Almost half of American workers would take a pay cut to continue working remotely after the coronavirus pandemic. Some of the highest earning households had some remote capacity to them with these positions causing individuals to be willing to take a pay cut to work from home.

Between parking, gas money, and breakfast stops, how much are you really saving by commuting to the office?

This week, Roy touches on how many try to fix things with people or technology.

Salespeople want you to buy the NEW technology to “make your life easier," but there is no single software streaming service program that will provide you with a better quality of life. Using technology to leverage a refined process multiples production, however, using technology as a solution to poor processes, multiples problems. Similarly, Roy notes the importance of refining the rules and processes before you begin to add more people.

You make life easier, faster, and better by defining who you are, what your core values are, and how to do things.

Tune in for all the gems about processes, people, and technology!

This week's episode touches on a "What If" scenario. Roy talks about retirement by generation, with baby boomers currently retiring and Gen Z next in line. For so long the dynamic has been to work hard and then someday... you can live every day like it's Saturday... and possibly only get to enjoy it for a few years.

Roy speaks on challenging this mindset and taking advantage of the opportunity to go full remote.

Every day should be Saturday... NOW!

We should be living... NOW!

You can be successful AND spend time with family. You can be successful AND take vacations. There are career paths where this is possible, that does not require a college degree, but just hard work and dedication! There is a shortage of developers.

70% believe social security will collapse. So, what are you doing now, to make every day Saturday?

Roy challenges you to start living now!

This episode talks about the future of remote work. Roy covers how this affects the way we build our communities. There are some thought leaders and managers who still believe a 9 hour work day at the office is the only way to be productive. There's a battle between a grasp for control and innovation.

2019 was a peak time for studies supporting remote work as the future. Microsoft released  a study in 2018 predicting the same.  These were all pre-pandemic!

Will remote work be a trend or will it accelerate more than it already has? How will remote work change our communities?

Digital transformation has become more important than ever with more than 80% of business leaders, across all industries, intending to accelerate their digital transformation in the coming years. Understanding this transformation and managing it within your business is going to become, if it isn't already, a necessity.

So what is business transformation? It's innovation of your business through technology. Some examples we have seen are; contactless shopping, eCommerce explosion, curb side pick up, virtual events, and my favorite the hybrid-remote workplace.

So how do you keep up and organize your business communication when your workforce exists remotely, or even globally?

I'm glad you asked.

View Details

Hybrid Communication is not a luxury, it's a necessity.

As businesses move to a move hybrid and remote business model, remote communication best practices become ever more important. Roy dives into three tips for both the business manager/owner and the everyday individual to better communicate with co-workers, employees and loved ones.

These three tips (6 in total, three business, three individual) break down the importance of non-verbal communication with physical presence can not be obtained. Roy believes that the traditional office space is a thing of the past and will never return to the way it once was. Never again will we have a meeting that does not have a dial in, and never again will we not be having participants of a meeting in a virtual capacity - so it's time to break down ways to make these meetings more productive and increase your Modern Business culture.

View Details

Three tips to better communication within your business, marriage or personal life. The number one wish from employees from polls we ran with over 10,000 responses from businesses and Government agencies of all sizes, was that they wished their organization had better communication.

Employees are tired of being left out of the loop. They want to know what's going on, even if it has nothing to do with them.

Communication is one of, if not the most important area of your business and it can help you scale or shut your doors for good. You can never get too good at communication, so much so that one of our core values at Capitol Presence is "Over Communication", because "Secrets, Secrets are no fun."

Forget the "loose lips, sink ships" and let your employees know what's going on. They will respect you more for it, and work harder and do their part to correct it.

Why go over this process?

Because it directly relates to businesses and organizations who are standing up, migrating or organizing their documents and information.

We cover the importance of organizing your information, which information to move or focus on creating first, and how to build around your necessities on which information and documents to bring into your production environment next.

Scoring is a measurement of Level of Effort (commonly referred to as LOE in the Technology world). This level of effort is a scale you might have seen used as "Low" "Moderate" "High" in the past, and functions in a similar way.

Because not all tasks and actions are created equal. There are certain things we need to accomplish that are easier than others, and this needs to be accounted for. Just because you got 10 things done this week and 2 the next, doesn't necessarily mean you were less productive. Those two things could have carried a much larger LOE and could actually mean you got MORE accomplished.

Through a numbering system that makes sense to you, and keeping that consistent. I prefer a deviation of the Fibonacci Sequence which uses numbers to dictate the level of effort needed to complete a task or action.

Welcome to the next step in our EPIC journey and tackling those goals we have established for ourselves. The next stage here are Stories.

Stories are short stories that make up your Epic journey.

They are the things you wish to accomplish, that don’t necessarily need to be daily tasks or actions (although some of them will be).

In Business these could be prepping for meetings, actions needed to take towards developing and application (like building out the user navigation for example), and then Outside of business and in your personal life this could be something you wish to hit in a 2 to 3 week period.

Now 2021 is here. We have our marathon, no pun intended – in our EPIC.

So now what?

Well, Lets talk about Sprints.

In a previous episode I talked about what an epic is and the reasoning behind them. With the new Year here, your resolutions should become your epics – or at least influence them. I tend to stay away from EPICs that I can’t directly control or that hold one time endings.

That’s where sprints come in.

A Sprint is a two week period where you should be attacking your goals. These sprints are made up of measurable tasks that we chip away at on a daily basis through Bricks. But how do Sprints work?

Allow me to introduce the ceremonies. Three ceremonies that will change the way you approach your goals forever.

The Santa Spotlight is something that people have been debating in recent years. This idea that Santa shouldn’t get all the credit for gifts because it promotes the idea that the parents didn’t work hard for the gifts, and instead spotlights some unknown magic where the children are instead ungrateful to their parents.

As projects and years come to a close there are two ways we can approach the end of Quarter and the end of year. One, we can grab for each bit of credit, after all as business owners, managers and entrepreneurs – isn’t credit due to those in charge?

Or we can do what a good manager and leaders do – and give the credit to the magic of the team, the company – the metaphorical Santa.

What are EPICs and why should we care?

With 2020 coming to an end it is time to look forward to 2021 and all the glory it has to offer us. A promise of new beginnings, new goals and new accomplishments. But now is the time to make those goals and write them down. Without documentation of the goals and the EPIC quest we are about to take on, how can we possibly know what to take on each day? Before we right a single daily planner for 2021, we first need to define what we want to do and have accomplished this time next year.

Let's break down EPICs, how to define them and how to set up ourselves for success.

Are you Hate to Lose or Love to win?

There are generally two different types of people in this world, especially in competition, and those people are either you love to win and are driven by winning, the feelings or winning – celebration and the feelings of accomplishments in your life, or you hate to lose and you are driven by the absolute hate of the feeling of gut check, disappointment and anger of missed opportunity.

While no matter your drive competition sits in all of us. While some people will claim to say that “they’re not competitive” – they’re in fact lying. It’s in our nature to be competitive, that’s the feeling of jealousy when your brother or sister gets more attention than you from your parents when you were younger, when your best friend gets a better Christmas present or gets the present you wanted, it’s the feeling when someone scored better than you on a quiz you busted your ass on – and the obvious – it’s the feeling you get when someone else is attempting to take something from you.

Let’s talk about accountability. Accountability is defined as the fact or condition of being responsible – meaning to take responsibility of something and taking ownership. It’s defined as a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone – for instance I am responsible for my children and am accountable for their actions in public and in the grocery store.

We have to understand that we have to be able to act independently and make decisions without authorization. And if we can not do that, if we can not learn to do the right thing when no one is watching the problem is not with someone else – it is with ourselves.

I noticed that I have not been fully transparent on this podcast, and for that I apologize. I have talked about my background with guests on the show, but not given you the full story of who I am and where I have been – that’s pretty much podcast 101, so today I am going to hit the reset button and start over. Consider this my trailer episode that never was. The origin story of a boy who never grew up and still calls himself a lost boy – bangarang by the way.

Americans are the unhappiest they’ve been in 50 years. 50 YEARS. A COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that just 14% of American adults say they're very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018. “It’s been one thing after another,” a woman named Walker said, when asked. “This is very hard. The worst thing about this for me, after so much, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

That's the point! None of us know what's going to happen. Get out of your comfort zones, this idea that you are in any way in charge of the world. Pull up your bridges and get over yourself.

Today we are talking about something that shaped our country – that being politics. What you might now know – or might not remember – is many of our founding fathers were entrepreneurs and business owners, inventors – in fact some call George Washington America’s first entrepreneur.

While we are no longer dumping tea into the harbor – at least not last I checked – our politics are again being shaped by the entrepreneur and the road to the oval office has become one of innovation.

Today we talk about waffle house, a badger, wearing boots on your head and free ponies for everyone as we sit down with Libertarian Vice Presidential nominee Spike Cohen and talk about how entrepreneurship shaped his road to politics.

Jeremy "Spike" Cohen is an American activist, entrepreneur, and podcaster. Spike built up a technology and web design company, ultimately selling his web design business, and turning his focus to libertarian activism. He is the current Vice Presidential Nominee of the Liberbertarian Party.

Why positivity is crucial and the importance of surrounding yourself with positivity in your lives.

It’s easy these days to surround yourself with negative group think, to get caught up in the new headlines of fear, negativity, pessimism, and doubt.

Group think is an easy thing to fall into these days, as we build lists, groups, pages – we create social media circles of members who all have the same look, ideas, ideals and concerns. While some of this can be good – like if you joined a group a like minded individuals who are there to up lift you, to push you to the next level and to help you and it’s members grow – that can be good.

However, group think can be very dangerous in today's social media world. We can hide posts we don’t like, hyper focus on ideals that could be out of touch with reality and very quickly find ourselves down a path of negativity.
