Play commenced with the Shield grades seasons getting underway in perfect conditions. There were some brilliant individual performances, some thrillers and some upsets in Round One. The panel covered it all off and had special guests in West Bentleigh all-rounder and Longmuir Shield player of the year Afan Sherriff along with SECA GM Nick MacMillan. This weeks show podcast via the media player below.

Hundreds of people took to the Bayside foreshore walking path on Sunday 11 August 2024, in memory of Lachlan McLaren.
Lachie’s Walk was held in honour of 17-year-old Lachlan McLaren whose life was tragically cut short by a driver who was under the influence of drugs.

Did you know Bayside is home to one of the most important fossil areas Australia, with finds dating back up to six million years?
From giant killer sperm whales that ate other whales to monstrous sharks half as long as a basketball court, a new exhibition will showcase the tumultuous lives of these bizarre beasts, displaying this groundbreaking fossil material for the first time.
The fossils were found with the help of many citizen scientists, whose contributions are helping piece together this ancient landscape, one bone at a time.
Alli was also joined by the guest curator of the exhibition, scientist and fossil expert Ben Francischelli (pictured above, with Alli). Prehistoric Bayside opens at Bayside Gallery in Brighton on June 29 and runs for two months.
Alli also spoke with Sandringham’s Andrew Williamson – who must be one of the proudest fathers in the area at the moment – after his 26-year-old son Sam last week qualified for the Paris Olympics.
Andrew and the rest of the family will be cheering on as Sam swims breaststroke for Australia in late July.
Andrew told Alli that living with a future Olympian meant they family went through a LOT of breakfast cereal and bread. Sam even had his own fridge in the staff room at Sandringham College when he was a high school student!

Breast cancer survivor Sophie van Haalen (left) and her sister Emily Jabour (right) joined Alli Harding in the studio today to discuss the emotional and physical impact of the disease on the patient, and their family and friends.
Sophie, 37, was living a ‘pretty much perfect’ life when she was suddenly diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in May last year.
A marketing manager and the mother of two young boys, Sophie had visited her GP when she experienced unusual chest pain over a few days. While her ECG was perfect, other investigations quickly revealed cancer. A whirlwind of tests and treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, followed.
Twelve months on, Sophie is now about to celebrate the end of her treatment, and is looking forward to participating in the Mother’s Day Classic at The Tan/Alexandra Gardens on May 12.

It was an eclectic mix on South of the River with Alli Harding on Sunday 2 April.
Highett coaches Pippa and Maddie from Strong Women Can were in the studio discussing the importance of strength and fitness for women of all ages.
Alli also chatted with Lisa Sullivan, the curator of the new Atmosphere exhibition of artist Clarice Beckett’s works. Beckett was a prolific artist, and much of her work focused on the area around Beaumaris, where she lived for some years. The exhibition is at Geelong Gallery until July 9. And – please – let us know if you find an unknown Beckett painting in your back shed!
Rugby is a growing sport in Australia – in fact, the Rugby World Cup (men) is here in 2027, and the women’s in 2029. Alli interviewed three members of the Liley family – dad James and daughters Cerys and Ati (pictured) – and discovered they are doing a lot to promote the sport. It was the half way mark of the grand finals after Saturday’s play and the panel were on location at Chisholm Reserve in our final podcast for season 2022/2023. Only a short edition of the panel as they got ready for the match broadcast of the Longy final. There was still a bit of grapevine news and first day results and a chat with young East Sandringham rising star Dougal McCartney.
