This is Dickens' own version of "A Christmas Carol" that he read for evening performances from its publication in December 1843 until his death in 1870.
"A Christmas Carol was immensely popular in 1843. Eight stage productions had been put in to production within two months of the book’s publication. Dickens himself was involved with many charities and social issues throughout his life. At the time he wrote A Christmas Carol he was very concerned with the plight of impoverished children who often turned to crime in order to survive. He saw education as a way in which children could eventually lead a better life." - BBC UK
