Share Your Story: Exploring humanity one heart at a time: Recent Episodes

Jenny Dilts

Everyone has a story. Our experiences make us who we are. In this podcast series Jenny Dilts, founder of Grieving Coach, invites people to share their stories as we explore humanity one soul at a time.

The episodes are taken from recordings of live events that are held in collaboration with the non-profit organization Reimagine. Because of this, at times the stories of the guests are supplemented with stories of the participants. I choose to include them because I believe that these exchanges make for an even richer experience. Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jenny-dilts-grievingcoach/support

Judy Lipson is the sole survivor of three sisters, losing her sister Jane in 1981 at age twenty-two in an automobile accident, and nine years later her sister Margie at age thirty- five after a twenty-year battle with anorexia and bulimia.

For thirty years Judy suppressed her grief and in 2011 founded Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice-skating fundraiser to commemorate the lives and memories of her beloved sisters Margie and Jane to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital.

Skating is a sport the Lipson sisters shared and brought Judy full circle back to her sisters.

Judy Lipson published articles for The Open to Hope Foundation, The Centering Organization, Grief Healing, and Love and Loss. Massachusetts General Hospital and SKATING Magazine featured pieces on Judy’s philanthropic work. Judy has appeared as a guest on The Open To Hope, The Morning Glory, Surviving Sibling Loss, Where’s The Grief, Good Grief and U.S. Figure Skating Voices From The Ice Podcasts. She presented at The Compassionate Friends National Conference and will be a keynote speaker at The Bereaved Parents USA Conference in 2023.

Her passion for figure skating secured the recipient of U.S. Figure Skating Association 2020 Get Up Award.

Judy’s memoir, Celebration of Sisters: It Is Never Too Late To Grieve, was released November 2021 by WriteLife Publishing.

Tony Lynch is the founder of the non-profit Memories of Us ltd...grief support for men, Global grief Network, and host of the Grief let's talk about it podcast. I started Memories of us in 2019 after experiencing some significant losses: my son in 2016 and my mother in 2018.

Leaving him with almost no family and no one to help navigate this experience, his grief became heavy and conflicting. On 1 hand he was taught to suppress not express, and on the other his heart was torn into a million pieces. Eventually with the choices he was making, he eventually lost everything and planned out his suicide. He did eventually seek help only to find there's was little or no support for men and he realized the importance of having a place where men can express their feelings, talk openly but most importantly be supported by other men who have had similar experiences as we all know grief is a lonely personal walk, and just because it is personal he feels it's a reason to not do it alone

Candace Sims is more than just a bereaved mother. She parented a son for 22 years as a single mother. Marcus Reid was killed April 8, 2007. Since that day life has never been the same. The first year of coping with grief and loss was an eye-opening, self-reflecting experience. She felt pitiful for herself and thought she would always be pitied. But due to the spiritual foundation she was building up to that point, the faith inside of her went to work.

She is now (at 15 years of grieving my son's death) a Certified End of life Coach, Court Appointed Advocate in the State of Georgia, Community Advocate, Small Business Bereavement Coordinator, wife and Grandmother! Death has taught her how to live better purposefully! Her life's work is to help others talk more freely, and candidly about death without falling apart.

This week’s guest is Camille Ellis, a Certified Life Coach whose niche is in grief coaching. She loves helping people embrace the whole journey of life including death. No stranger to trauma and grief, some of Camille’s personal experiences include a difficult childhood, surviving domestic violence, raising 2 sons on her own, one of them who had many mental health challenges. Camille married a great man who brought a 12 year old daughter into the family. During her step-daughter’s first year at college she experienced a bacteria in her brain stem which left her as an incomplete quadriplegic. Through this experience, Camille learned how to accept and still love, no matter what.  This lesson would come into play again a few years later when her younger son Wes died by suicide. In the midst of her deepest misery, she heard a very strong and clear message that has become her purpose and her profession. The message was, “You will be the best mother, wife and woman because of Wes’s death. You will be stronger, wiser and able because of his whole journey and help others too.”

This episode is a conversation with Noémi Beres from Cyprus. Noémi's first experiences with death came when her grandparents died at age 6 or 7. She faced more death and grief later in her 20s, and then again in her 40s. No stranger to losing loved ones, Noémi teaches us that death and grief is a natural part of life. In our time together we learn that art and music can be an excellent means of self-expression in our grief, even when we don't know why we do what we do on a conscious level. We also discuss the differences between slow and sudden deaths. Join us on the path of exploration, discovery, and excitement as we learn to see grief in a new perspective.

This special episode is dedicated to all the Veterans who have served in our nation's militaries. Thank you for all that you are and do! You make the world a better place.

A common misconception often held by people with non-military background is that most of the time is spent in combat. In actuality, it's only 2-3% of the responsibilities. The majority of the operations are focused on making the world a better place through service, education, skill development, and environmental improvement. In this episode, we get an insider's view of what it's really like to serve in the United States military. We dive deeply into the grief and guilt that service people experience, from survivor's guilt after a training accident, to spending time away from their families, as well as the transition back into life as a civilian. Throughout our conversation, Mario P. Fields shares tips and tools that he's used in converting his grief into growth.

How does grief change over time? In this episode we talk about what it's like to be a caregiver for a parent while embracing motherhood of young toddlers, and then again after the children are venturing into their adult lives. We explore the juxtaposition of the decline from ALS with the energy and vivaciousness of childhood. Then we fast forward 25 years to witness the grief and loss from dementia and the difference that makes in the caregiving role. The episode culminates with lessons learned through these experiences as portrayed in a legacy trilogy of children's books that will be published in November 2022.

Kelli's journey includes losing her mom to suicide in 2017, and her son Quintin to an accidental drug overdose in 2018. Kelli dedicates her life to encouraging those in recovery as well as those affected by trauma and loss to keep moving forward and grab hold of all the gifts God has for them!

About Kelli

Kelli didn’t grow up with visions of becoming The Grief Guru, but life had other plans. After losing her mother to suicide in 2017, she found herself swept out in a sea of grief. Barely able to get through the days she looked for help and was discouraged when she didn’t find the support or tools to recover.

Thankfully an encounter with an inspiring speaker showed her that healing was available to her. She decided then and there to dedicate herself to recovering from grief. She studied, prayed, documented her process, and began to recover. Her recovery came not a moment too soon as just a year later her 20-year-old son Quintin died of an accidental drug overdose.

Kelli has since become a speaker, author, and coach. Her book, You’re Not Crazy, You’re Grieving, shares the process she used to heal from her tremendous losses. She also founded The Grief Guru, a company focused on helping others learn to move forward on purpose, in purpose, and love their lives after loss.

Being in a line of work that often exposes you to the reality of death by suicide can be both a challenge and a gift. Realizing that no amount of training will adequately prepare you for the experience can be quite unsettling. It does, however, allow you to develop more empathy for the deceased and their loved ones, and serve as a light for more people on their dark journey.

In this episode of the Share Your Story podcast, I am joined by Gordon Carmichael, a Warrior of the Heart and Transformational Coach who has been touched by suicide as a police officer, manager in the healthcare setting, and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) therapist, as well as friend. Join us in this compassionate and vulnerable conversation on an often very sensitive and traumatic topic.

When most people hear the word “grief”, they think of the heartache and pain that follows the death of a loved one due to illness, suicide, or some other tragedy. But what about the grief that comes when a loved one undergoes a shift in gender identity? How does one cope with an intangible form of loss?

In this episode of the Share Your Story podcast, Dottie Rice joins us to talk about how she navigates her grief as a result of her daughter's gender identity shift. She also shares how her work as a Board Certified Christian and Identity Coach has prepared her for this stage of her life, as well as how she and her husband evolved to become better versions of themselves in the process. Stay tuned!

About Dottie

Dottie Rice is a Board Certified Christian and Identity Coach. Dottie is passionate about empowering others to live the life they were created to live. Her passion stems from overcoming personal experiences with suicidal thoughts, escape, and self-loathing. Now she creates a safe space for her clients to authentically explore their current reality which leads to discovering the roadblocks and walls; the recurring themes and stories; the trips and traps. They then take those things on in a way that disables their ability to hijack life, dreams, and possibilities. This leads to outcomes like the freedom to live a life of power, passion, and purpose. It results in a transformation that impacts the world.

As a Grief Coach, I have accompanied many people in their grief experiences. One of the more complex situations is when the grief comes from death by suicide. Because of the stigmas of suicide and mental health challenges, often people don’t talk openly about it and this can seriously impede a person’s capacity to mourn or express their grief. With suicide there are often many unanswered questions. We may be asking “Why?” What more could I have done? How did I not see this coming?

Having a Grief Coach by your side as you grapple with the situation can help you navigate some of the pain, stigmas, and complexities that come with this type of death. With support like this you can learn to find joy and purpose in your life even after such a devastating tragedy.

Join us as Gillian, one of my clients, shares how I helped her navigate her grief journey following her father's death by suicide. She describes how, despite her loss, Gillian transformed her life from one of blame to one of laughter, adventure, and inspiration. We also discuss why it's important to give yourself time to grieve, stay connected, and have a community, even if it's a comm one. Stay tuned!

About Gillian

Gillian is the Sales Manager for a country club in Pleasanton, California. She has been in the wedding industry for about 10 years and can say, she genuinely loves her job. She is from the San Francisco Bay Area and grew up in a wonderful family with her mother, Robin, father, Hector, and Sister, Lexi. They are a very close family. Although her parents divorced when she was 3, they remained best friends and were the best co-parents you could ever imagine.

When she is not busy in the office, Gillian spends her free time hiking, dining (big foodie!), traveling, and spending time with her family. She now has a niece and nephew, who are her world and have truly just made this world a brighter place. She is the proud mother of 2 rescue cats (Mali & Ro) and is happily with her boyfriend, Cristian.

Gillian’s father was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in his early 40s, and this took an incredible toll on him, as he was a very active and the "always on the go" type. He would hike Half Dome in Yosemite on the regular, go on extreme bike rides, or do any other activity you could imagine. He was fearless. His death, his suicide, was the biggest shock she could have ever experienced, and completely crumbled their world. They had no idea that he was as depressed as he was, and truly always thought they would continue to work through his disease. Unfortunately, within less than 10 years, Parkinson's had taken too large a toll on her father, and they lost him in May 2022. Since then, they have been picking up the pieces of their life and trying to navigate this "new normal."

We go through grief at some point in our lives. Losing a loved one is a devastating experience that often leaves us unable to move forward.

In this episode of the Share Your Story podcast, we welcome certified life coach and three-time author Robert Pardi, who shares his own journey of loss and grief after the death of his beloved wife, Desiree. We also discuss the concept of being beautifully scarred and how to find joy in the face of adversity. Stay tuned!

About Robert Pardi

Robert, born in NYC, is one of those rare individuals who embrace change and live what he calls “possibility in action” – taking his desire for transformation and putting it into action daily. He received his MBA from Columbia University and was quickly recruited by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds. Shortly after, his wife Desiree was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. Unfortunately, she passed 11 years later. After throwing caution to the wind, Robert leaped from his comfort zone. He changed careers and moved to the same Italian village his great grandfather immigrated from over 100 years ago. “The thing with grief is there’s not always a solution. And a lot of it is taking a different perspective on the situation and reframing it and seeing it from a different angle. … You can’t look death in the eye and not have it impact your life. This is an easy-going interview with Claire M. Schwartz. We talk about grief and the trauma journey and how we can find healing and a better version of ourselves from our experiences. One of my biggest takeaways was the simple step by step process Claire shared of healing from trauma.

1) Recognize you're stuck

2) Want to get help

3) Untangle the mysteries and stigmas attached to grief and trauma

4) Find resources to help.

The process is individual and can be very organic. It can start with an aha moment or a gradual realization, or combination. And the change doesn't come over night. It's a process. So be gentle with yourself along the way. As Claire says, "Be as gentle with yourself as you wish others would be to you."

Claire M. Schwartz has survived traumas including shame, violence, fear and pain, rape, and cancer. Not only did she survive, she has thrived and today she uses what she learned from her personal experiences to help others do the same.

At age 25, the loss of her mother was the jolt that started Claire's journey of change and healing. She had a nervous breakdown and then began the painstaking realization that she had no idea who she was or how to manage in Life. And she has spent decades learning to grow into a stronger, wiser, more grounded woman.

In our time together Claire shares her story and what she's learned in her 15 years of working as a Grief Relief Expert, using her unique combo of compassion, perspective & humor. Claire has a BA in Psychology and is also a Reiki Master Teacher, Spiritual Counselor and Interfaith Minister, and Certified Professional Coach.

When a loved one dies we wish for them to Rest In Peace (R.I.P.), but as survivors we rarely allow ourselves to do the same. She believes that love connections imprint our souls forever and she moves forward with acceptance of what is. Allison made the choice to grant herself permission to choose love over fear allowing herself to be Transformed by Love. This decision has created a life she would have never dreamed of after the death of her husband. To honour his legacy she practices releasing fears and embracing empowered action knowing that her husband's wish for her would be the same as hers for him...R.I.P.

Allison's vision is to create an Empowerment Ripple Effect - One Person, One Family, One Community at a time. And this journey starts with you...Your Life Matters!

Throughout our conversation we talk about how to recognize and stay true to our inner messages, what we can learn from them, and how we can take a logical approach to being Transformed by L.O.V.E.

In this episode we meet Michiel Van Dorp, a Life Perspective Coach who helps people affected by childhood traumatic events and suicide. His desire to help people in these areas stems from his own experiences with complex childhood trauma and two suicide attempts. Michiel also leads groups in Positive Intelligence. Michiel currently resides in the Netherlands.

Through our conversation, we learn the difference between a catastrophic traumatic experience versus complex childhood trauma. Michiel shares how his life has been impacted by childhood trauma and a wobbly foundation of insecure attachment growing up. In his journey to find healing, he has learned much from Gabor Mate, who explains that trauma is having lost contact with your essence, with your sense of self. Michiel openly talks about his two suicide attempts and what he learned about himself and his situation from those experiences.

After his second attempt, a friend and coach asked two powerful question that changed his life. 1) How do you remember yourself, at your earliest memory? and 2) What would be the legacy you left behind if you succeeded with this attempt? The first helped him get in touch with his essence, who he really is; and the second gave him a goal in life, something to live for.

"Whatever circumstances you get in, if you really put your mind to it, you can overcome everything." Looking into the future, Michiel sees a wealth of experience leading to multiple gifts-- gifts to himself and others. He is committed to help other people to not only survive, but to thrive in life.

In this episode I talk with my High School Principal, John Aune, about his experiences with Loss and what he's learned from them. Mr. Aune is an amazing example of the strength of faith and relying on God in the tough times and in the easier ones. Throughout his life he has experienced numerous losses including his baby brother, both parents, and his 2 month old daughter. During our time together we talk about how his relationship with Jesus has helped him through challenging times and how his faith has grown because of his journey. Some of the lessons he's learned are to let the bitterness and the anger go, focus on the good memories and blessings, and share your gifts with others. To sum up our conversation I'll use something that Mr. Aune said in our time together, "Grief is real. But so are the blessings."

You can reach out to Mr. Aune on Facebook @John Aune, or https://www.facebook.com/jaune49.

During our conversation Kristabeth openly shares her journey with us and how Bady helped her move from living in a false sense of security to living and functioning in a normal life again. Other tools that helped he along the way are counselling and talking about her experiences. She says that sharing her story has helped her become more confident and heal from the trauma. Her biggest piece of advice to others who are struggling to share their story is "Be gentle with yourself. You don't have to climb Mt. Everest on the first try. What is Grief and what do we do with it? Find out what happens when two Grief Coaches get together to talk about their passion for Grief in this fun and enlightening conversation. Today I am joined by my friend and fellow Coaching at End of Life alumni, Jenna Bonner.

Jenna is the founder of Grief Forward. She is a listening ear to anyone feeling stuck in their grief and needing to move forward. She helps people discover their new normal after loss and live the life they were meant to. She has experienced a lot of loss and grief in her own life and she has developed compassion and empathy to hear people out and bring some normalcy to opening up about their grief, loss and pain.

We talk about how we met, how she got into this field, and how she's dealt with the grief from her own personal losses. She also shares her secrets for getting through the heavy times of being a Grief Worker. We end our time together with Jenna's advice for anyone who is currently going through grief.

I met Jenna in a coaching support group where I introduced myself saying, “I love Grief!”. I knew we’d be friends when Jenna’s face lit up at my introduction. Then I knew I wanted to collaborate with her when she later commented on it and said that she feels that same passion. Now we co-facilitate a workshop called What to Do When you Don't do Grief to help people understand Grief better and learn that their processing style is healthy, even and especially when it's not "normal".

With a degree in Communication Studies and Certified Professional Coach credential from the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC), Raina Sweeney is poised to take your life to the next level. Not only has she studied what makes people go from status quo to thriving in all aspects of life, she has lived it herself. For the majority of her teen years and all the way through her 20's Raina struggled with self-acceptance, self-love, and compassion which showed up as mental health issues, self-sabotage, and never thinking she was worthy of her many accomplishments. She felt she was living someone else's life. Happiness was fleeting and joy was nowhere to be found. She searched everywhere for answers and slowly began to uncover what true joy was all about. Now, after homing in on this practice, she has made it her life's journey to share what she has learned first hand with the world.

In this episode we talk about how Raina overcame mental health challenges, two suicide attempts, and years of negative self-talk. She shares from her personal experience what she's learned from these painful experiences and her gratitude for them. Other topics that we discuss are depression, anxiety, suicide, and how to have those deep and necessary conversations. These conversations can decrease the stigma of mental health struggles and increase connection with ourselves and others. We also explore self-care and how it relates to mental health. Throughout our time together Raina encourages us to dig deeply, honestly, and objectively in order to forgive ourselves, accept who we are, and transform our pain into joy.

In this episode I talk with my mom, Kris Rencher who is a wife, mom, grandma, storyteller, nurse, and family history extraordinaire. In our conversation she shares about the legacy and contribution of our ancestors and how differently people handle similar situations like the loss of a child and depression. We talk about faith and religion and the impact that has had in not only their lives, but in the lives of their descendants. Of learning about her family history Kris says, "What I have now is skeletons [referring to the names and dates]. My goal is to put the muscle and the nerves and the blood system into these people, into these skeletons, so I can see them as real people. So that they become alive to me. That's what my goal is now."  I believe our stories do just that. The courage of our ancestors can become an inspiration to us. And as we share our stories, our experiences and courage may inspire those around us and our posterity. Throughout our time together Mom shares stories of her own life as well: car troubles, nursing challenges and miracles, and her hopes for the future.  When asked what legacy she wanted to leave for her kids and grandkids Kris responded, "Trust in [the Savior]. Know that you're never alone. Reach out to your family." Kris may be found playing with her grandkids, helping others in the community, or working on her family history through the website familysearch.org.

In this episode my guest is Larry Indiviglia, author of the memoir 126 Days, 11 Minutes: Our Love Story. This collection of experiences allows his readers to walk in his shoes as he shares his deepest, most personal experiences from his relationship with a woman suffering from Stage IV cancer until the time she transitions. This intimate story provides many life lessons such as the importance of keeping hope alive, embracing life, honoring the wishes of the patient, even though you might not agree, overcoming the challenges of navigating the health care system, and standing strong in one’s truth even when totally scared.

He wrote the book to honor the life of Gayle and their love for each other. Although brief, Larry considers his relationship with Gayle as one of the most profound experiences of his life. He also hopes 126 Days, 11 Minutes inspires others to say "yes" to love even when logic says, "no." Larry believes there are many beautiful souls who are looking to discover and experience unconditional love. His book shows it is possible.

In addition to the book, we talk about self love, tango, living fully, and the way of the Universe.

To sum up our time together, Larry shared a lyric of one of Gayle's favorite songs, "Nature Boy" by Nat King Cole. "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."

"The heart has no questions, the mind has no answers. And if you listen to the heart and you follow it, you're gonna experience a love that maybe you thought you never would be able to do."

In this episode we meet Dave Roberts who has been a national and local workshop presenter on grief and loss and a keynote speaker. His commitment to helping others navigate grief is a result of the challenges that he experienced following the death of his 18-year-old daughter Jeannine in March of 2003 due to cancer.

This interview is taken from a recording of a live event in collaboration with the non-profit organization Reimagine whose mission is to create space for conversation around topics of grief, end of life, living fully, spirituality, and the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Because it was a live event, there is participation from other attendees. I chose to leave their comments in because I feel that they add to Dave's story and the overall experience. Some nuggets that Dave shares in this episode include:

~"When we either share or witness somebody's story we become love."

~"I had to make friends with my sadness, my grief, and my own inadequacy."

~"Be gentle with yourself"

~"Take the best qualities of your loved one and make them part of yourselves."

~Don't forget the siblings.

~'Honor the past as your teacher, honor your present as your creation, and honor the future as your inspiration.'
