Neal Reid, son of Charles Reid, returns to “At Home with Roby” to continue sharing memories of his father’s store, the iconic Park-N-Shop on Wilkinson Blvd. On our last show with Neal, the conversation ended at 1956 when the first Park-N-Shop burned to the ground. Charles continued operating the store out of a shack in the parking lot, while also overseeing construction of the new store that opened in 1958. Running the new store was a true family affair with Charles’ sister running the snack bar, his brother-in-laws manning the meat and produce departments, and his brother overseeing shipping and receiving and the store’s three tractor trailers. Behind the scenes, Charles was busy brainstorming the store’s hot deals and extravagant promotions that many longtime Charlotteans remember fondly today – 10 cent hotdogs, car giveaways, surprise appearances by Smiley the Clown and more. For this reason, they plan to keep the steel framework, brick walls, and front glass windows to bring in as much sunlight as possible, while also modernizing the space for today’s workforce. Neal Reid, son of Charles Reid, joins Trent and Patrick on “At Home with Roby” to share memories of his father’s life and store – the iconic Park-N-Shop on Wilkinson Blvd. Originally built in 1958, Park-N-Shop was the premier grocery store during the 1950s and 60s. Together with Red Hill Ventures and LaBella Associates, our Roby Commercial team is renovating the space that has been sitting vacant since 2004. The modernized building, being rebranded as Park-N-Workshop, will maintain its overall exterior shape with its distinctive sloped roof and steel arches, while the interior is completely overhauled into a 33,000 square foot office space accommodating five to six tenants in custom suites.
Park-N-Shop was a special place for many Charlotteans, and Charles Reid was a respected member and leader of the community. In 1956, the original Park-N-Shop building caught fire and burned to the ground. Charles was chief of the volunteer fire department at the time. The morning after the fire, many customers arrived at the store to show their support and continued to shop with Charles from a temporary shack in the parking lot until the new Park-N-Shop was complete in 1958.
