Creating engaging, sticky, actionable content can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Find out in this episode of the Fractional C-Suite Retreat how to recognize which topics to cover in content and where to find your company’s hidden gold mines of content. Who better to learn from than the Co-Founder of Content Bacon, Wendy Lieber?

Wendy talks about some of the techniques she uses when helping other companies discover their meatiest content. Whether trying to generate leads, create awareness about the brand, or convert prospects to clients, Wendy has the keys to successfully do so.

Takeaways:

  • Wendy says that C-Suite Executives need to do two things: tell a compelling story about your company to connect with customers on a deeper level and pay attention to the changes happening with AI, without getting distracted from your main objectives.
  • An involved leader is an inspiring leader. With the virtualization of the workplace, informal meetings became harder to nurture, and structured communication became more important. Stay active in chats and meetings to inspire your team.
  • There are three mistakes a company can make: a website without actionable items may create traffic, but may not direct traffic effectively, a company’s CRM database may be an untapped gold mine, and a company may be ignoring its current customer base.
  • A strategy involves having a plan that you're involved with, determining how you want to communicate with your audience, making sure that you are adding value, solving problems, and educating the organization on your goal.
  • The best research comes from listening to the customers and subject matter expert interviews. Listen to the pain points that need solving and the interests of the buyers by getting closer to the perspective of the customer.
  • If you’re stuck on creating content, start by looking at the frequently asked questions or the not-asked-frequently-enough questions that you wish your prospects would ask more of. If someone asks you directly, others may be Googling the same question.
  • When working with freelancers for content creation, a fixed strategy and leadership team helps prevent any disruption from unpredictable or inconsistent workers. Having layers of protection including an accountability structure will protect the end user and customer.

Quote of the Show:

  • “Write for humans first, search engines second.” - Wendy Lieber

On this episode of the Fractional C-Suite Retreat, we’re joined by a strategic and data-driven seasoned marketing executive with 14 plus years of experience. She’s a marketing maven who is adept at developing marketing strategies and integrated demand generation plans. Welcome to the show, CMO at yorCMO, Marguerite Yeo! Marguerite joins the show to share her six truths of marketing, dispel lead generation myths, and look towards the future of marketing

Takeaways:

  • There is no silver bullet magical tactic for success in marketing. Each company must use integrated marketing that combines both online and offline, organic and paid, digital and non-digital tactics, and utilizes email, events, social media, and webinars.
  • No one person in an organization is in charge of purchasing a product or service. You are marketing to the CEO, CIO, CFO, and all the individual employees who have to implement and use the product.
  • Don’t prioritize quantity over quality. The wrong request to marketing professionals can result in ineffective ads, leads that don’t convert, and customers that don’t fit your ICP. While this approach might be cheaper in the short-run, it will not create a long-run ROI.
  • Encourage synergy between sales and marketing employees by conducting interviews with representatives from the opposite department. This will allow marketing employees to screen sales employees and vice versa.
  • Though trade shows are glamorous and attractive forms of advertising, they can be ineffective and expensive due to setup, breakdown and T&E costs. They often result in a high quantity of bad leads, rather than a decent number of qualified leads.
  • Operations are often neglected, but it is critical nowadays to monitor and track every single tactic that you implement. This may include tracking the right KPIs, picking the right MarTech tools, and force correcting based on feedback.
  • Leverage AI to help marketing efforts. Use it to add a predictive aspect to marketing, rather than only looking back on the past to see what has been effective. AI may not eliminate jobs, but it will eliminate people who don’t adapt to its presence.

Quote of the Show:

  • “Instead of asking marketing, ‘what's the cheapest way to get the most leads?’, the right question should be, ‘what's the most cost effective and efficient way to achieve sales targets and retain customers?’” - Marguerite Yeo

Today’s guest is a seasoned marketing executive with a proven track record of helping companies tackle marketing problems. With over 35 years of experience he’s worked with large corporate environments, small organizations with minimal marketing, and everything in between. Our guest this week is a fractional CMO at yorCMO. Welcome to the show Ken Acer! Ken joins host Joe Frost for a discussion on identifying the different marketing needs of organizations, the value of AI in marketing, and how to distinguish between fads and innovations.

Takeaways:

  • There is no one right answer to what marketing means to you. Marketing spans a wide range of ideas from strategy to product. Ultimately marketing is what your organization needs for long term growth.
  • When revamping your marketing department, start by looking at the competition. If you can identify their market size, market share, and how they serve customers, you can identify where you best fit into the market.
  • When it comes to distinguishing between fads and long term customer needs, you need to observe your customers. Talk to real users and observe what features they may be adding themselves, and understand why they are doing it.
  • When forecasting customer needs, you need to focus on things that offer a concrete benefit to the customer. While a certain marketing fad or new technology may seem promising, if it doesn;t actually benefit the customer, don’t focus on it.
  • When looking at using a tool, you need to understand the why behind the tool first. Wanting to “use AI in marketing” is like “wanting sales reps to make phone calls”. Focus on use cases for technology, rather than just the usage of technology.
  • One major benefit of conversational AI models like Chat GPT is its ability to compose data in people friendly formats. Asking for help on the first draft of an email to a client or the demographics of a company are valuable uses of that technology.
  • As a marketer, part of your role is to help enable your sales teams, but finding balance between the departments can be difficult. You need to help them with short term goals while focusing on the long term initiatives of the company

Quote of the Show:

  • “You have to be able to try to think about what the unmet needs are today that will be important in two or three years”. - Ken Acer

Today’s guest is an accomplished and disciplined B2B marketing executive. She has a solid track record of developing and executing growth marketing strategies and has extensive expertise and experience in managing multinational teams. Please welcome to the show, Nanda Grandison! Nanda is a fractional CMO at yorCMO, and joins the host Joe Frost to share what she sees as the biggest opportunities for C-Suite executives.

Takeaways:

  • As a CEO, you need to ensure that there is a renewed focus on driving growth through retention. You want to make sure you are understanding the clients you have inside your organization and know how to course correct when appropriate.
  • Referrals are typically organic and are a great way to re-invest in a client. There is transparency with clients in making referrals and how it shows your appreciation or gratitude to clients.
  • When you are onboarding clients, you want to make sure that you are being extremely thoughtful and documenting every step of the process. You want to check on a regular basis to make sure that proper service is being provided to clients.
  • You want to be able to help clients understand what is coming down the line and show them what else you can do to help them. This will help the clients better understand their future and how you are setting them up for success.
  • If you have employees working remotely, hybrid or in person, you want to make sure that the employees still feel connected to the clients.
  • There are many different types of ways to connect with clients, ranging from leaning on vendors to host an event to traveling several hours away to a destination to connect with a client.

Today’s guest is a data-driven performance marketing executive with over a decade of experience and demand generation. She's grown and mentored lean marketing teams from scratch. She was named one of the 10 most inspiring women leaders in 2021 by I E R A Women Leaders Magazine. Please welcome to the show, Aditi Karandikar. Aditi is a CMO at YorCMO. Aditi joins the host Joe Frost to share her thoughts on new opportunities within the c-suite level.

Takeaways:

  • Back in the day, marketing was seen as a cost center but it has now flipped to be considered part of the revenue creators of a company.
  • Demand generation is an end-to-end strategy tactic which leads the purchase funnel to sales to close. It is integrated across multiple channels of paid search and SEO among other channels.
  • Product marketing and demand generation work very closely together, and sometimes provide a wider reach than ARPR. Only after you have created a brand and have product knowledge will you then see it lead to demand generation.
  • When it comes to demand generation and marketing, you can’t have one without the other. Whether they are directly or loosely integrated, they need to work together to showcase success.
  • You need to have a mix between paid search or SEO Driven and getting leads at in person conferences or webinars. Both are necessary ways of trying to increase your sales funnel.
  • It’s important to maintain your brand awareness with any of your potential clients but you should also take note of if they are ready to buy now or not. If they aren’t ready yet, keep them in mind but they don’t get the same level of attention as someone who is ready now.
  • The advancement of AI technology has helped many marketers explore and test out new ideas, but it still is in an infancy stage and shouldn’t be considered the end all be all.

Quote of the Show:

7:59 “Product marketing and demand generation go hand in glove.”

On this episode of The Fractional C-Suite Retreat, we’re joined by an accomplished B2B marketing executive with more than 20 years of experience leading marketing and sales initiatives for B2B enterprises. He has developed deep expertise in areas like marketing strategy, messaging, positioning, product and corporate rebranding. Today’s guest is a CMO at yorCMO, Chad Person. Joe sits down with Chad to learn about why client experience is so important, which KPIs and metrics matter the most, and how B2B buyers have changed.

Takeaways:

  • C-suite leaders need to be focused on client experience. There are hundreds if not thousands of touchpoints your clients have, and you need to make sure they have a smooth experience.
  • While client experience has existed in the B2C world, companies in the B2B and professional services industries are only now focusing on it.
  • When determining metrics to track client excellence, start by figuring out the results you want to achieve, and how you want to grow the business. Once that is set, find the metrics that match up most closely with that vision.
  • While it is important to track metrics, it is equally as important to understand those metrics. Translating the data into meaningful improvements can often be the most challenging part of the process.
  • When it comes to retaining clients, your product offerings matter less than how strong of a client experience they have. Even if you have the best services in the industry, if their experience is lackluster, your clients will start to look elsewhere.
  • While NPS is a valuable metric to take into account, it is often a lagging indicator. When tracking client experience, look to leading indicators like the number of new proposals being generated with existing clients.
  • The average B2B buyer has changed and evolved. Modern B2B buyers are looking for companies that can meet them where they are. For companies, this means fully understanding your buyers, and knowing what they are looking for.

Today’s guest is an executive coach, transformational change leader, speaker, consultant and futurist. She has spent her career working with companies of all sizes helping people “ride the waves of change”. Joining the show this week is Founder and CEO of Julie Noonan Consulting, Julie Noonan. On the latest installment of The Fractional C-Suite Retreat, Joe Frost Interviews Julie to learn more about reverse mentoring, creating change sponsors, and how to successfully implement change frameworks.

Takeaways:

  • Reverse mentoring pairs new employees with seasoned ones to have both parties learn from the other. This teaches newer employees valuable skills, and older employees new technologies.
  • When focusing on teaching employees new skills it is crucial to equalize the power dynamics and move away from performance management frameworks.
  • Mentoring over zoom makes it easier to find time in an executives busy schedule to meet, and allows connections to be made across long distances. However, it removes the in person aspect, and can condense the amount of time spent together.
  • Regardless of the framework you utilize for implementing change, the bottom line is that you are dealing with human beings who will react in different ways. Instead of herding cats, work with employees to make the change conducive for them.
  • Listen to those who speak up and highlight issues. Many projects that fail are the ones where no one wants to hear any bad news.
  • As a change sponsor, it is important to pay close attention to who you are impacting with change. Some employees may be making a 180 on their responsibilities, and they need to be understood.
  • Change sponsors need to be genuine in addressing the questions and concerns of those in the organization.

Today’s guest is a community builder and a LinkedIn and networking ninja. She is the business advisor to many fractional owners and fractional professionals that want to launch their careers and scale their business. Nancy Fox is the Founder and CEO of Fractional Connections. On this week’s episode of the Fractional C-Suite Retreat, Nancy shares her tips for entrepreneurs who want to hire a fractional professional, and the ways fractional professionals can add additional revenue streams.

Takeaways:

  • The fractional community needs to boost the awareness of entrepreneurs. While larger businesses are more familiar with fractional professionals, entrepreneurs still have little awareness.
  • When marketing to entrepreneurs, focus on how you can solve their pain points, rather than simply the benefits you can provide.
  • If your clients don’t know what their pain points are, it’s your job to help them identify those problems.
  • When hiring for an inhouse executive role, the process takes time so that you can build trust and ensure the right fit. Fractional professionals get hired in a matter of weeks, companies should utilize advisors and testimonials to ensure a right fit.
  • As a fractional professional, you are growing a business, and businesses require more than one revenue stream. Having at least 3 revenue streams is a safe bet.
  • An E-book is a great way to promote yourself. An E-book leads to speaking gigs that will put you in front of potential clients.
  • Organizations like EO are a great resource for fractional professionals looking to learn and meet others.

In a virtual world, how can we make connections that are more personal? Today’s guest is a trusted financial advisor with over thirty years of broad-based experience in tax, accounting, and business advisory. Mark Ratafia is the President & CEO of Beacon CPA and the guest speaker on this episode of the Fractional C-Suite Retreat. Mark joins Joe to talk about ways you can create culture in a remote environment, the hidden costs of being remote, and which areas in a company lend themselves to being outsourced.

Takeaways:

  • C-Suites need to be focused on creating organizations that attract and retain good employees.
  • In-person interactions are the foundation of company culture. Instead of trying to convince everyone to go back to working in an office, plan a yearly in-person company retreat.
  • While going fully remote and closing a physical office may seem like a good way to save on costs. Your travel and entertainment costs for the team will increase and may cancel out the amount saved.
  • While remote work has a lot of advantages, it can quickly become isolating. As a remote worker, it is important to carve out time away from your desk where you interact with other people.
  • Managers need to learn a new style of management. In a remote environment, you need to be more structured, you can no longer browse by cubicles and ask people how they are doing.
  • When choosing what to outsource, you don’t just have to outsource things you are weak at. You might be great at marketing, but if it is taking up time that could be more valuable elsewhere, it is an area worth outsourcing.
  • It is important to consider that when hiring a fractional professional, that person only has so much time a week to spend at your organization.

Today’s guest is a fractional professional with 15 years of finance, accounting, and operational experience. He specializes in building companies' finance functions from the ground up, to enable efficient and repeatable data output. Welcome to the show, Founder and Fractional CFO at Syncopated Synergy, Sean Dockery. Sean joins Joe Frost to discuss his tips for fractional professionals, how to focus on finding value for an organization, and what companies should look for in fractional professionals.

Takeaways:

  • The role of the c-suite has shifted. In remote-focused environments, individuals with a strong understanding of the systems in place should be running the show, the c-suite should be there for guidance.
  • When it comes to streamlining costs, don’t get rid of the accountant in the finance department, look to lower costs in the leadership team with a fractional CFO.
  • The best mentality to have as a fractional professional is to make decisions as if you were in that seat full-time. Thinking this way will lead to better strategies, and strengthen the relationship between you and your client.
  • When starting out a fractional relationship, charge less during your setup period. Once you are fully setup and operational, you can charge a more fair rate for the work that is being done.
  • While fractional employees have many benefits, W2 employees outside of the c-suite often have a higher sense of ownership over their roles.
  • Not every role in a department needs to be in-house or outsourced. A hybrid team of employees of both types can offer a lot of advantages.
  • Online networking groups are booming. Joining a few can introduce you to some new clients or referral partners who would be outside of your regular circles.

Today's guest is a highly accomplished, respected executive with 30-plus years of experience leading high-level sales efforts. John Chapman is the Founder of JL Chapman Group, and Director of the East Carolina University Sales Academy. On this week’s episode, John sits down with host Joe Frost to share his sales tips, tell new sales reps what they need to expect when starting their first job, and share some of the lessons he taught to sales students at the Bryan School of Business and Economics.

Takeaways:

  • Your sales team is more than just a revenue stream, they also need to be strategic and problem-solving.
  • Sales is an important skill set to learn in college. For any given major, 50% of first jobs out of college involve sales, for marketing students, that number is 90%.
  • Selling is all about cultivating relationships. You need to listen and learn about your customers’ problems before trying to sell them something.
  • While prospecting was previously a responsibility of the sales team, prospecting is now the marketing department's responsibility. The sales team now has a higher focus on the need to qualify the prospects.
  • Don’t be afraid to lose fast. If a prospect isn’t the right fit, don’t spend valuable time trying to force a sale, spend that time on a new client.
  • Entrepreneurs need sales ability. If you want investors to take an interest in your product or service, you need to be able to sell them on it.
  • With the increase of zoom in the workplace, sales reps have more tools available to them than ever before. However, the key to successful sales still lies in the fundamentals of building relationships.

Today's guest is someone with 25 years of knowledge and experience as a management consultant and business executive. Adi Klevit is the host of the “Systems Simplified” podcast and the Founder and CEO of Business Success Consulting Group. Adi joins Joe to explore how marketing plays a role in hiring, how to embed your values in your company culture, and how to manage a remote team.

Takeaways:

  • To hire the right people, you need to know how to differentiate yourself from the rest of the field.
  • There are many ways to stand out in your job postings. Videos can be attention-grabbing and give you a chance to highlight things like your core values.
  • Cohesive company culture is essential to a high retention rate. It’s not enough to write your core values on a doc that gets buried away, you need to live your culture and values.
  • When defining your core values, using a single word or sentence isn’t enough. Define them in what they mean to you, give examples, and tell the story behind each value. Ask your team what each value means to them.
  • A high-performing team is one way to measure a successful culture. Strong culture leads to strong results.
  • Your employee handbook should cover rules, regulations, and policies. All companies should also have a cultural handbook that details the culture and what it means to be a part of that organization.
  • A strong, well-defined structure is key to a successful remote organization. Meetings should be intentional and well-defined, and each attending member should know why they are attending.

Join us in welcoming a new yorCMO team member on this week’s episode of The Fractional C-Suite Retreat. Stacy Kamigaki is a marketing expert with over 25 years of experience, someone who strongly believes in team collaboration, and yorCMO’s newest Fractional CMO. Stacy joins host Joe Frost to explore how insights from the customer experience team can help marketing with lead gen, discuss using data to drive decisions, and explain how to apply a marketing lens to hiring.

Takeaways:

  • C-suites need to build more intelligence into their companies and leverage data to make decisions and share insights with the team.
  • Effective usage of data can help two different departments work together more efficiently. When your marketing and finance teams can look at a situation more objectively, there is less push and pull.
  • If marketers can use data to demonstrate the value of their programs, they will increase credibility and trust between themselves and the leadership team.
  • While there is a focus on the buying habits of new customers, it is important to also consider the motivations of current customers who bought in the past.
  • While many would assume that marketing’s only job is to generate new leads, marketing also exists to extend client lifetime value by reducing churn.
  • Instead of focusing solely on how you can get new customers, consider how you can add new services for existing customers.
  • How you market your company and products will affect who applies to your company.

Today’s guest is a business owner and powerful leader of a remote-first company who is passionate about building a well-rounded company. Neil Emeigh is the CEO of Rayobyte. On this week’s episode host Joe Frost sits down with his good friend Neil to talk about creating a culture in a remote work environment and how to best support remote employees.

Takeaways:

  • While tools and processes have caught up to a remote work style, company culture has yet to adapt fully.
  • While online calendars have made it easy to schedule meetings with coworkers, it has made it that much easier to interrupt someone’s productivity. Meetings show up on a schedule, tasks don’t.
  • In a remote business, having in-person events that workers from all over can come to is essential. In-person yearly retreats or kickoff events should be a mandatory expense on your budget.
  • There is immense value in finding time to meet with clients in person if possible. In-person meetings often lead to stronger client relationships and better client referrals.
  • In a remote environment, support for your employees will differ in both the support provided and how you let them know they are supported.
  • As a remote company, establishing and emphasizing your core values will help unify employees and give a clearer sense of direction for leadership.
  • If you take a step back and delegate when leading employees, you give them space to flourish in their roles and have an increased sense of agency.

Today's guest got his start in particle physics and now coaches businesses. He has a focus on helping businesses deliver cleaner products and greener services. Garrick Villaume is Owner and Principal at Physical Systems Inc. Garrick and Joe chat on this week’s episode about creating a people-focused business environment, and how businesses can create a better world for those to come.

Takeaways:

  • Overtracking of actions taken by workers is ultimately going to hurt businesses.
  • The use of technology in business has as many potential benefits as it does potential consequences. When implementing technology, it is important to not let positives blind us to potential misuse.
  • The main focus of business should be to make the world a better place for those to come.
  • All businesses, organizations, technologies, and processes begin and end with people.
  • While many businesses may tout their values, they also need to live and act through their values.
  • When working with a global workforce, you need to make sure you communicate information in a way that can be understood.
  • It’s important to not let best hold better hostage. While you may want to do your best work, it’s crucial to not let that get in the way of implementing options that are better than what you currently have.

Quote of the Show:

  • “I want to emphasize my view that it's all about people.” - Garrick Villaume

Today’s guest is a former athlete who developed a more approachable and intelligent way to train the everyday fitness enthusiast that has seen success with franchises from coast to coast. He’s the host of the podcast “Playing Guilty” and is the Co-founder and Chief Concept Officer of MADabolic. Welcome to the show Brandon Cullen. Brandon joins host Joe Frost to talk about how the fitness industry changed during covid, finding the balance between in-person and remote services, and how Brandon created a successful fitness brand.

Takeaways:

  • One of the biggest opportunities across almost every industry will be for those who can bring back in-person human connection and do it well.
  • While the pandemic created a new wealth of digital offerings for many industries, people should be less argumentative about which style is better, and acknowledge the value of both remote and in-person options.
  • While there are a lot of businesses in the fitness industry, many of them are quite similar and lack an effective structure to make their clients better on a daily basis.
  • While the norm in the fitness industry has been to push more and more cardio, strength training and resistance training help keep you stable and balanced as you age.
  • One challenge with franchising is finding the balance between addressing the different needs of customers in different areas and keeping a consistent brand image at every location.
  • A good way to lead is to do your due diligence upfront, and put people in roles they excel at. Give them enough freedom to screw up, but hold them accountable.
  • While a bit of ego helps move the needle and drive progress, a good leader needs to balance out their ego with empathy for their team.

Quote of the Show:

  • “I think you should apply for the job that speaks to you.” - Brandon Cullen

Today’s guest is someone who provides emerging and growing brands with the legal support they need, resources to grow, and strategies to win at franchising. He has over 25 years of experience working with over 200 franchise brands and is the publisher of numerous franchise compliance and registration guides. Charles Internicola is the Founder of The Internicola Law Firm. Charles joins host Joseph Frost on this week’s episode to explore building authentic branding focused on your internal culture, and how to be a responsive leader who creates a thriving organization.

Takeaways:

  • C-suite professionals need to pay attention to their branding. Your brand, good or bad, influences your culture and by extension your team.
  • Branding comes from all aspects of your company, but it needs to start with your team.
  • Developing a strong brand takes time and effort, but the end result is an authentic, strong, brand and culture.
  • A good leader looks out for their team and takes action to show that they are willing to support the team.
  • A brand is more than just the outward appearance of the company, it also includes the internal interactions between your team members.
  • Creating growth and a thriving organization doesn’t come from the leader, but the value of having everyone together. Unify the team, align the goals and trajectory, and support everyone.
  • Successful leadership should result in a feeling of pride and accomplishment at the growth and advancement of your employees.

Quote of the Show:

  • “For me, brand, it's not just the marketing or the outward perception, but it's also all those internal communications with your team.” - Charles Internicola

Today’s guest wants to help you build a sales culture of success. He's a sales coach and leader who has refined thousands of salespeople into high-performing sales professionals. Karl Schaphorst is the President and Owner of Sandler Sales and Management Training in Omaha, Nebraska. Karl joins host Joe Frost on this week’s episode to talk about hiring the right people, the merits of a fractional system, and how sales teams need to be taking advantage of virtual meetings.

Takeaways:

  • When customers are having problems, they talk to salespeople. Salespeople bring solutions.
  • When you relegate your salespeople to other roles, not only will your demand eventually slow down, but they will forget the skills they developed, making it harder to generate more demand.
  • Fractional sales roles run the risk of losing interest and excitement in the multiple clients you are working for.
  • When hiring salespeople look for “Patriots” not “Mercenaries”. Mercenaries will deliver you the minimum task required, while patriots will strive to accomplish their task because they believe in what they are doing.
  • Fractional and Part Time are different. While a fractional professional spends time at multiple organizations, you need to be full-time committed to being a fractional professional.
  • As a salesperson, leverage the power of virtual meetings. Virtual meetings let you be more efficient, and your competition will be using them.
  • When leveraging virtual meetings, make sure your presentation of yourself is high quality. Dress well, and have a decent camera and microphone.

Quote of the Show:

“Make sure that the habits that build a business are not quickly forgotten, but are strengthened every day.” - Karl Schaphorst

This week’s guest has been studying sales and communication skills since 1997. He's building a network of leaders and business owners who support each other and created the resistance removal sales system. Mike Irving is the Founder and Elite Performance Business Coach at Advanced Business Abilities. Mike joins the show this week all the way from Perth, Australia, to talk with Joe about establishing a mindset for successful leadership, setting realistic goals for yourself, and getting rid of frustration.

Takeaways

  • We all have to deal with irate customers or frustrating meetings. When you feel that moment approaching, take time to collect your thoughts and take a deep breath.
  • Taking “extreme ownership” over the things you do is the first step to developing your thoughts, behaviors, and attitudes.
  • To make changes, you must first be willing to confront the things that need to be changed.
  • There are two types of goals: objective goals which are specific and measurable, and subjective goals which are not measurable and result in moving goal posts.
  • The five phrases that lead to expectations are: have to, need to, should, gotta, and must.
  • When you have an expectation of what should happen, and you don't hit it, frustration sets in, and you become unable to think clearly or communicate effectively.
  • No matter how advanced technology gets, there will always be a need for human-to-human interaction.

Quote of the Show:

“When you are willing to inspect, that's when you are able to change.” - Mike Irving

Simon Chappuzeau is the Founder and Managing Director of StoryLux. He’s built communities from the ground up, starting in the film industry, and is currently building communities focused on the blockchain and coaching entrepreneurs. He specializes in bringing people together both virtually and in person. Simon joins host Joseph Frost on this week’s episode to talk about overcoming the challenges of building online communities, creating authentic connections, and understanding the right time to reach out.

Takeaways:

  • When developing your marketing strategy, don’t reinvent the wheel. Working with an expert in the field who understands your product and needs will be easier than figuring it out yourself.
  • If you really want to help people get what they want to be done, start from a place of genuine interest and curiosity. Once you identify the problem and how it affects them, you can begin to solve it.
  • When building a community, many people prioritize the number of members rather than the value their members get. A community of 50 where each member gets value is stronger than a community of 5000 where very few get value.
  • While building a community online can be challenging, the ability to connect with members outside of your immediate geographic community is a major advantage.
  • When choosing a platform for your community, don't focus on features alone. The best platform is the one that best brings out the personality of your community members.
  • While your prospect may be a good fit for your product, they might not be ready to speak to you. It’s ok to circle back with them at a more opportune time.
  • While community building takes more time compared to setting up Google ads, a community can carry its own momentum, an ad campaign cannot.

Quote of the Show:

  • “Is the person you are trying to reach out to ready to speak to you? Are they ready for what you have to offer?”

Can treating your business like a franchise still be beneficial even if you don’t want to franchise? Bertus Albertse is the President of Jabz Boxing, and founded a fitness franchise in 2013 that has since expanded to 7 international territories. Bertus has been a leader in the health & fitness industry for over 14 years, and joins Joe Frost on this week’s episode of The Fractional C-Suite Retreat. Bertus and Joe discuss the ways that any business can gain insight from the franchise model, how to monetize your trademark, and how to set up your franchise framework.

Takeaways

  • Franchising gives you the opportunity to turn your intangible assets like intellectual property into a revenue stream.
  • While selling a franchise and selling a playbook with your business strategy may seem similar in theory. A franchise lets you retain ownership over the process.
  • Franchising is all about packaging an idea and identity into a revenue strategy.
  • Establishing a good service interface helps your franchise. The tools used, ingredients used, and product offered are easily replicable, but the way you serve customers isn’t.
  • When thinking about franchising and how to help someone do what you do, you help yourself by developing a system on what you do every day and why you are successful.
  • When starting a franchise, go in expecting the worst. It will be tough, but worth the challenge.
  • When considering franchising, ask yourself “Do I feel strongly that other people could succeed at using my formula”?

Quote of the Show:

Clarity comes from action. Clarity doesn't come from thinking. - Bertus Albertse

When giving feedback are you telling people the facts or just your opinion?

Today's guest is an author of six books on organizational communication and change, an expert in honest communication and resolving conflict, and a national speakers association certified speaking professional. Steven Gaffney is the President and CEO of the Steven Gaffney Company. Steven joins the show this week to sit down with Joe and discuss how to be a more effective communicator, give better feedback, and build stronger teams.

Takeaways

  • The biggest problem in team relationships isn’t what people do say, it’s what they don’t say.
  • When giving feedback to a coworker, simply telling them they dropped the ball is a good way to hurt their feelings. It’s important to explain that your intentions arent to offend them, but rather to help them succeed.
  • As a leader, it’s not enough to make employees feel comfortable giving feedback. You need to listen to honest feedback and initiate a quick solution to problems that are brought up.
  • Give feedback using facts not opinions.
  • Teams win or lose together, and committees win or lose individually. Building an effective team requires a collaborative effort to address issues.
  • Know your north star PGS (Purpose, goals, strategy)
  • Debate isn’t the problem, not resolving the debate is the problem.

As companies get larger, C-suites get further and further away from the customer. Today's guest is an Entrepreneur and a master conversationalist. Casey Cheshire is the author of the book “Marketing Automation Unleashed” and the CEO of Ringmaster Conversational Marketing. Casey joins host Joseph Frost to talk about how podcasts can get you a conversation with your ideal customer, and the value fractional team members can provide.

Takeaways

  • We have to talk to our customers. It's easy to hide behind tech but there needs to be a better mechanism to communicate with customers.
  • As a member of the c-suite, you set strategies based on your customers' challenges. But how can you efficiently address those challenges if you aren’t having conversations with customers?
  • Podcasting is a great marketing tool for members of the c-suite. It allows you to have in-depth conversations with current and potential customers and leaves you with plenty of content for the promotion of your brand
  • A customer of your competitors is less likely to have any bias towards your product or services and can provide you with a valuable perspective.
  • Asking customers about the journey they took to find you is a great way to get free market research straight from the customer.
  • Podcasts are a marketer’s best friend. There are a lot of extra marketing routes that branch off of podcasting.
  • When making content, it is important to understand why you are doing it. Content alone is not enough to get you by, you need a strategy.

Quote of the Show:

“I found personally that I was able to reinvent myself in the C-suite by launching a podcast. And then that was my playground.”

Today's guest has a diverse experience in marketing sales, operations, and product development. He serves awesome leaders and helps them drive up scalable growth, and helps others to realize their full potential. Trevor Turnbull is the Co-Founder and Chief Growth Officer at Singhbull Ventures. Trevor joins host Joseph Frost to discuss the process of building a diverse global workforce, and the challenges remote workers in different time zones face.

Takeaways

  • In the last two years, the world changed drastically. You can either recognize it and leverage it, or ignore it and slowly fade away.
  • One way to help remote workers in different time zones is to figure out work they can do autonomously in their own time zone.
  • It is essential to consider the human element of your team when creating a work environment for them. Create an environment that is conducive to your remote workers getting to enjoy their out-of-work activities.
  • It is important to accommodate the different challenges remote workers may face in different geographical locations. While a company in California might have sunny weather all year, a worker in Vermont could lose internet during strong snowstorms in the winter.
  • With the proper setup, the new digital workspace can allow you to set up a talented globally diverse workforce.
  • While part-time remote workers have their benefits, hiring full-time employees can lead to a better quality of work, and a happier employee
  • You need to have a commitment to the retention of your current employees.

Quote of the Show:

“Getting connected to the human beings, I think is a critical component to all of this” - Trevor Turnbull

As a new addition to a team, getting up to speed with the company culture can be a challenge. When you’re a fractional CMO, that challenge is compounded. Harrison Ryder is an innovative industry mind, a highly skilled strategist, and an outsourced VP of Sales at Sales Xceleration. Harrison joins Joe to talk about some of the challenges the sales force faces in the new hybrid landscape, and how fractional CMOs can overcome the cultural challenges they face when joining a new team.

Takeaways

  • The culture of a company is what will ultimately direct the value and results that a company will add to the marketplace.
  • Make sure the company culture reaches all corners of the business. Teams that feel separated from the culture will also feel separated from the success they drive.
  • A clear sense of accountability is a kind act. When accountability is ambiguous, it creates unnecessary stress and confusion.
  • Having a clear schedule for meetings where everyone knows what they need to bring prepared is an important way to ensure the company culture reaches hybrid employees
  • It’s hard to replicate an in-person connection. Building in-person retreats or meet-ups into the company culture will help improve the collaboration of a team.
  • As a Fractional CMO, it is crucial to demonstrate the value you are providing to the companies you are working with.
  • Good skills to look for in a potential outsourced provider are: someone who knows how to listen to the client in terms of what they are saying, and what they aren’t saying.

Quote of the Show:

  • “my most successful engagements are when there is that in-person component.” - Harrison Ryder

Michael Carter is a Fractional CMO at yorCMO. He’s a lifelong marketer of technology products and services. Michael is a sought after conference speaker, published author. He sees how marketing has changed over the years and noticed that the c-suite level is slow to adapt to these changes. Michael sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about marketing strategies and how other members of the c-suite can make their marketing direction better.

Takeaways

  • The way that marketing has changed is something that hasn’t entirely translated into the c-suite level yet.
  • Going to conferences and trade shows and spending a lot of money on a booth and manpower is an old style of marketing that isn’t as strong as having a conversation with your customer.
  • When a VC is investing in your company, they aren’t necessarily interested in a spreadsheet but more about if you can use the money on marketing wisely and answer their questions.
  • People trust reviews that they read online, so word of mouth has changed to online reviews but is still a marketing strategy.
  • A lot of software today is sold on a subscription basis but with that strategy you have to win that customer every month or year.
  • At the highest level of a company, you want to make sure that everyone is working together and are on the same page.
  • It’s ok to constructively disagree with someone, even if they are the CEO. This helps to make sure that the company is being well balanced.

Quote of the Show:

3:16 The last 10 years of my career has been conferences. They cost an enormous amount of money. It was always very difficult to understand any kind of one-to-one out of what came out of that and you sent 12 sales guys and you buy some booth space and a sponsorship, and then, you know, $40,000 later, you're not sure what you got for your money or in some cases far more money than that.”

Eric Johnson is the CMO of yorCMO. He believes that every person and brand has amazing potential waiting to be opened. His experience in B2C marketing is evident and he’s a dynamic marketer and commercial executive. Eric joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest innovations in the c-suite.

Takeaways

  • You want to make sure that both your sales and marketing are aligned in all aspects of your company.
  • For marketing, set goals each month on what your marketing message to be and then see how sales can relate to that.
  • Use people’s emotions to your advantage in marketing. There is enough negative in the world so try and supply people with hope.
  • There is a search for authenticity right now in terms of marketing as people prefer being authentic over a sales pitch.
  • A fractional professional can help things move faster in a company as they are being paid to come in and provide their services.
  • It’s the job of a fractional professional to help the company be strong, they are not there to talk people’s jobs or run the company.
  • You want to be aligned with the company on a personal and cultural level to work with them. It makes it difficult to work together if you don’t align on your values.

Quote of the Show:

1:07 “As you're thinking about your business, one area that I have had a lot of experience with over the years is really aligning sales and marketing.”

Mike Franz is the Founder & CEO at Manufactoringpower.com He’s a passionate start up leader who mixes his strong family values with growth and profitability. Mike talks about the importance of communication and having a clear process for your company. Mike joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the innovations he sees in the c-suite.

Takeaways

  • Everyday, you have to keep moving forward and keep trying. Once you stop moving forward your company is likely to go under.
  • It’s OK to ask for help and admit that you might not know the answer to something. That can help you grow as an individual.
  • A fractional professional can help you to better understand an area that you might not be the strongest in.
  • Don’t be afraid to look outside your organization for help. A fractional professional has worked with many companies and can bring a fresh perspective to your organization.
  • When deciding on choosing a fractional professional, you should consider your top three things you are looking for in a fractional employee.
  • If you are a fractional professional, you want to avoid leading with a tactic. It comes off as spam and like a bad sales pitch.
  • You need to have a proven process and show it to your potential customers. Having that will make the client trust you and be more likely to go for your services

Quote of the Show:

29:57 “In talking with marketing folks or, it doesn't matter who we've talked to any sort of outside service, that's one thing that I've learned over the past two years is if they don't have a proven process that they can execute and deliver, I have a hard time even really talking to them.”

Will Scott is the Founder & Actuator at The Culture Fix Academy. He’s also the author of “The Culture Fix”. He’s dedicated to helping coaches accelerate their consulting practices, and is passionate about having a positive culture. Will joins host Joseph Frost to talk about the latest innovations in the c-suite and how a good culture can change a company for the better.

Takeaways

  • C-suite leaders often delay investing into their culture because they have other priorities, but this leads to the issue of the culture not being maintained and falling apart.
  • If you talk with 100 employees and 90 of them give you a number value on how the culture of the company is, that can provide you with helpful information of where you might need to change.
  • Turnover is a big reflection of the culture. If you are suffering from a high turnover rate, then it could be because the culture doesn’t keep people invested.
  • Your company needs strong core values that are unique to your company and meaningful as well.
  • Your culture can be what separates you from your competitors and other companies who are doing the same thing as you.
  • A good leader exemplifies all the core values of the company and hires people based on the core values.
  • If you are struggling for content, ask your employees what they think about the core values and that can be great content.

Quote of the Show:

0:56 “I still experience C-suite leaders often delaying investing in their culture because they have other priorities.I try and encourage them to think about if you put culture first, revenues and profits are going to come more easily because you'll get your team working together better.”

Natasha Miller is the Chief Motivation Officer at Natasha Miller. She also is the author of “Relentless”, which was a best selling book in over 10 categories on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Natasha joins host Joseph Frost to talk about leadership and the latest innovations in the C-Suite.

Takeaways

  • Being a good leader doesn’t have one definitive answer, you need to find the answer that works best for you and your style.
  • The core values of your organization should also fit into the clear rules and guidelines of your company.
  • It is the job of the leader in a company to inspire others and make them their best selves that they can be.
  • As a leader, you need to have a clear vision for the direction of your company. You want to remain firm and grounded in reality about what your company can do.
  • You shouldn’t turn to blame immediately. If something goes wrong, you don’t blame those around you and if you do, then your leadership style needs to be re-examined.
  • Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Being open and honest is something that can help you in your business.
  • Forgiveness is one of the most important things in your life. You need to be able to forgive someone if they have wronged you.

Quote of the Show:

7:29 “A leader's job is to inspire others, to be their best selves within the organization. I hope that I am embodying that with my team.”

Kristie Jones is the Principal at Sales Acceleration Group. She has over 20 years in the SaaS industry. She sees the importance of having accountability in your company and making sure that everyone fits into that culture. Kristie joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest innovations in the C-Suite.

Takeaways

  • The culture of accountability is one thing that is missing from the C-Suite. Without that, all the work that you have done will be over very quickly.
  • A culture of accountability is not about micromanaging. It’s about making everyone else’s life easier.
  • Accountability starts at the top, and you need to be ready to fire or hire someone based on how they are meeting the needs for accountability.
  • Sometimes change is needed to make your company better, and you shouldn’t be afraid of it.
  • Criticism is ok. It can allow you to really take notice of how the company is doing and how to keep the best employees.
  • Think about what you want to own, and be the best in that market. Don’t stretch yourself too thin, you won’t be successful then.
  • You can only inspire the people who are self motivated. Good leaders have followers organically and if you are honest and authentic, then workers will respect that.

Quote of the Show:

2:37 “I think some people think a culture of accountability equals micromanagement and employees don't like that. And at the end of the day, a culture of accountability is supposed to make everyone's life easier, not harder.”

Michèle Hecken is the Founder and CEO at Alpha Global Experts Inc. She creates a fun and fearless life and business, and sees the importance of making sure that everyone at a company communicates properly. Michèle joins host Joseph Frost to talk about the latest innovations in the c-suite industry.

Takeaways

  • Autonomy and ownership of responsibility over everyone’s realm is one thing that a lot of c-suite executives are missing out on.
  • C-suite professionals need to stop delegating completely. It can create a moment of peace but it still is your project and you own the responsibility of it.
  • Take a close look at the things on your plate, and think about how much time you spend on them and which you enjoy doing.
  • If you don’t have a good communication level, it leads people to have to assume what should be done which creates a jam in the workflow.
  • When you do offboarding right, it creates trust and that can help a company run smoother.
  • To be a good leader, you need to be self aware and be empathetic. Those are key features for many good leaders in an organization.
  • It’s hard for leaders to tell someone they did something wrong, so approach it by asking what their thought process was when they made the wrong decision.

Quote of the Show:

1:51 I strongly believe that we need to stop delegating completely. Because delegating is typically taking something that's on your plate, usually in a situation where you're already overwhelmed and picking something that you can give to somebody else, but you still own the responsibility.”

Jim Rowe is the Author/CEO/CMO at Jim Rowe Marketing. He’s also the author of “Get Your Ducks in a Rowe, Business & Communication”. He’s been in the industry for many years and specializes in helping craft brand growth. He sees the issues in how recent college graduates are not as well taught in certain skills that are basic skills for a workplace. Jim sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about that and other innovations he sees in the c-suite space.

Takeaways

  • There is an issue with recent college graduates where they aren’t proficient enough in critical thinking and communication, and this is referred to as the skills gap.
  • Colleges are under pressure to teach students how to use technology but that comes at the cost of not learning other skills that are important.
  • Critical thinking and writing are part of everyday life. You want to develop your skills so that you will be successful in whatever business you go into.
  • There are 10 steps to critical thinking and the first step in the process is to find out what your purpose is and that will help you find your audience.
  • Roughly 80% of recent college graduates think they are proficient in critical thinking and writing while their managers would disagree.
  • These skills are important life skills that aren’t just for business skills. These skills can help you in everyday life.
  • Make sure you know what your audience is, the problems are and see how you can solve any issues for them.

Quote of the Show:

10:23 “I've been doing this for over 45 years and every day when I'm writing, I'm editing, as I go along saying that doesn't sound right, I could do this better…a metaphor here is tiger woods and I both play golf…He's constantly going to the range. He's constantly getting coaching. And for that skillset, you need to continue to do that. Your whole life writing and critical thinking and they are inextricably linked. To write, is where the rubber meets the road.”

Anthony Berardo is the Fractional CMO/Marketing Strategist/Owner at Berardo Marketing Group, LLC. He witnessed the boom of e-commerce during the COVID-19 pandemic and sees that it still pays off to be online and have a retail store. Anthony joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest innovations in the c-suite.

Takeaways

  • Consumerism coming out of the pandemic has changed so now is the time to make sure you are looking at the way you target your audience and make sure you are reaching them.
  • E-commerce became very popular over the course of the pandemic. But as we transition out of the pandemic, the level of volume for e-commerce has tapered off.
  • The brands that are able to service customers both in retail and the e-commerce space are the ones that are going to thrive.
  • Make your brand have a consistent image no matter where people are seeing it. That way it will be easy for the consumer to recognize it.
  • Going into retail is similar to going into a whole new business. If you have a good product and you get into a good store you get an incremental lift just from being on a shelf.
  • It’s important to get into retail. A go to market strategy allows for more visibility for your brand from consumers rather than just relying on search engines.
  • If you are a brand that is looking to go from start up to mid market, you might not be able to afford to bring in a full time CMO, so the solution is to higher a fractional professional.

Quote of the Show:

04:21 I think the CMOs or the CGRS, or the CEOs or anybody that now realizes this, and now we look at it more holistically, the customer life cycle, because we're lifestyle like more holistically. How do we get retail, And e-commerce to commingle and co-exist? The brands that adapt to that and are able to build this omni-channel strategy a lot more holistically, I think, are the ones that are going to really service their service, their brands and service their companies the best.”

Chris Quandt is the Director of Special Projects at Kimsa LLC. He has a knack for easily seeing the numbers in estate planning and tax strategies. He values integrity and open mindedness in a leader. Chris joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest innovations he is seeing in the C-suite.

Takeaways

  • There are unique employee retention programs out there that members of the c-suite are missing out on. These are unique ways that will help you keep your employees in a difficult time such as now.
  • Premium financing is when you get the bank to lend you money to pay for insurance premiums.
  • You can create an assist value within insurance. That way if an employee leaves you still keep the benefits.
  • You want to make sure you are working with people who you connect with on core values. Don’t spend time working with people you don’t get along with.
  • Fractional professionals try to be as tax efficient as possible. This makes it likely that fractional professionals and financial professionals will work together.
  • Opportunity zones are an economic tool that allow people to invest in distressed areas of the US.
  • A good leader will have integrity. It can be easy to do something that might not be in the best interest of someone but you want to avoid that and remain open minded.

Quote of the Show:

15:02 I typically like to start with a zoom call, just cause it's pretty convenient and see if I connect with them. Sometimes you just could tell you're not connecting well, or they don't share your values. I don't want to inorganically come up with reasons to reach out, but just making sure that we're connecting on a regular basis. And I'm keeping them top of mind when I'm meeting with clients that could have problems that they could solve.”

Sarah Ginand is the Owner at Strategic Marketing Consulting, LLC. Building the relationship and the connection between your customers and employees is something that she sees as incredibly important and wants everyone to see how much it can help a company. Sarah sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about that and some of the other innovations in the C-Suite.

Takeaways

  • Relationship building is an important aspect of working as a C-suite executive. You want to build a solid relationship with your employees and clients.
  • Think about your clients' issues and how you can better. You want to hear what they have to say and not just be a cheerleader for yourself.
  • You want to give people content that is interesting to them. You will only know what is interesting to them by building the relationship.
  • Encourage people to join professional organizations. That is an easy way for people to interact with others in their world.
  • Make a phone call as a leader to check in with one of your best clients. It goes a long way and sets a good example for all the employees.
  • There are many ways to be a leader in an organization. You want to pair people with things that they are interested in for being a leader.
  • You are asking a fractional leader to partner with you to help reach your goals, rather than just hiring a full time person who will do what you want.

Quote of the Show:

32:08 “You are asking a fractional leader to partner with you as opposed to, complete a transaction to reach your goals. And so the fractional leader has a lot of experience typically in your area or similar areas. And understands the big picture, but also gets how to bring that down to an implementation level too.”

Frederick Akpoghene is the CEO/Founder at JeGO Technologies Inc. He knows how deep tech works and he is passionate about using technology to better the lives of everyone. Frederick sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the innovations that he sees in the c-suite space.

Takeaways

  • The biggest opportunity that people in the c-suite are missing is making each employee feel like a valued member of the team. Doing this will help mitigate turn over and reduce how often you have to hire.
  • Everyone has to work together as a team. You might have some separate individual goals, everyone in the company should share the same ultimate goal.
  • Each person in your company is a different person, and they might respond to leadership in different ways. It’s your job to understand them and find the best way to communicate with them.
  • Meeting with people through VR can allow for a deeper connection with the co-worker or client, as it gives you a better sense of interaction.
  • You want to find ways to maximize your time. Your time is precious and you want to make sure you are getting everything you can out of it.
  • As Mark Cuban said, business is a 24/7 sport. You can’t take time off from it and expect to still be at the top of your game.
  • You need to change people’s minds. You have to get them to start thinking about the solution to the problems that they are experiencing.

Quote of the Show:

6:06 “I like to get personal, even though a lot of the typical approach in corporate America is not getting too personal, more so understanding the person like how's your family, why are you up to one o'clock working on the company, do you have a friend, hobbies, what are other things that you like to do and enjoy it? Every conversation I wanted to take something away about that person so I can improve my leadership approach with them.”

Joshua Bylsma is the Founder, CEO at Tradion. He believes that leadership is all about investing in others. He sees the importance of trusting those in your team for their input or perspective. He joins host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the interesting aspects he is seeing in the c-suite space.

Takeaways

  • There is an opportunity for younger people to step up and get into the c-suite world. It can be a struggle for younger people to connect but they bring in fresh ideas.
  • Take the time to listen to others and be invested in what they are saying to you. You never know who you may inspire.
  • The most successful CEOs are the ones who are helping prepare the next generation of c-suite executives behind them.
  • It’s easy to become jaded or cynical when dealing with meetings all day and constantly being bombarded but it’s important to keep being optimistic and be excited.
  • You have to learn to trust your team. You hire people and surround yourself with people who are good in areas you are not and you need to trust their judgment.
  • It’s critical that you as the c-suite professional set the bar for how the employees should treat work. The work ethic, hours put in and values all stem from you.
  • Leaders need to inspire and influence. You can’t be a good leader without decision making skills and influencing those around you.

Quote of the Show:

5:21 “I've found it's helped me even think through my own things I'm dealing with and I've learned to be a little more vulnerable, even when having those conversations with the younger generation. And I've found that just having this conversation sometimes helps me solve problems I didn't realize I needed to solve yet.”

26:52 “I often come back to it's my responsibility to. The bar, everything from how many hours I put into my work ethic to what's important. Um, and then communicate that out verbally, as well as my actions to the team and model that I think that's been critical. And I think it is critical.”

Wendy Pease is the Language Translation Expert at Rapport International. She is also the host of the “Global Marketing Show Podcast” and the author of “The Language of Global Marketing”. She joins host Joseph Frost to talk about the importance of making sure that your business is ready to go international.

Takeaways

  • From the day you start your company, think about going international. That way you can plan ahead and avoid any troubles of language barriers.
  • Reach out to your connections in the state you are in. Federal and state governments provide free resources and grants to companies that are doing international business.
  • The number one export of the U.S. is services.
  • Google translate isn’t always accurate. You want to find a service that can provide you with an accurate translation.
  • There is technology called translation memory. It will allow you to keep your speech consistent in whichever language you are trying to translate.
  • There are many options for doing video in another language so people can understand, such as dubbing, subtitles, etc.
  • You have to think of your audience and what their expectations are when you are designing something to be used internationally.

Quote of the Show:

0:50 “From day one of a company starting their business, they should be thinking about going international. If you're developing software and you don't think about globalizing it, it becomes a nightmare later on.”

Bryan Smeltzer is the President at LiquidMind and the author of “The Visionary Brand: The Success Formula Behind the Worlds most Visionary Brands”. He knows how to make your brand stand out and make a difference in your marketplace. He sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about the innovations they see in the c-suite space.

Takeaways

  • Inspiring your team and being passionate about what you are doing is something that the c-suite professionals are missing out on.
  • If a c-suite executive is visible and around to everyone, that can drive internal and external passion for the employees and make them more motivated to work.
  • The pandemic has made communication around teams worse as everyone works remotely, so communication becomes more important.
  • Be an innovator, not an imitator. Market driven is the imitators and marketing driving are the innovators.
  • You want to always have something that has a positive impact on your marketplace as often as you can.
  • Culture is incredibly important when it comes to retaining your team. This can help people to feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves and it feels authentic.
  • There is a division paradox where people think they are a visionary but they really aren’t. All the generational companies have visionaries who lead them.

Quote of the Show:

1:20 “I don't see the c-suite, in many instances, especially the larger the company gets the less tangible they are to those underneath them. And the team many times needs that tangible CEO down in the ground floor with them locking arms, but also probably more importantly as instilling a culture in the company.”

Her wealth of knowledge about sales and revenue is something that every company could use. She sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest trends they see in the c-suite space.

Takeaways

  • The gig economy dramatically impacts the world of those in the c-suite.
  • The gig economy wasn’t as large before, but now it is a growing movement along with the great resignation.
  • Fractional professionals are going to be in more demand as the years go on as they are appealing than hiring a full time professional and giving them benefits.
  • You want to take in any information you can. If you work with plenty of different industries, your wealth of knowledge is that much wider.
  • It’s not what you say, but how you say it. Sometimes the information comes across the best way in person.
  • When you talk with a c-suite executive, you want to find out what works well for them and then ask them what could be done better and see if you can help with that.
  • As an outsider employee, you don’t need to worry about the inner working or the politics of a company.

Quote of the Show:

7:20 “I think the C suite, the C level fractional leadership is going to explode. And it's an exciting time to already have that experience under your belt to be able to go out there and execute, because I think the man's going to rise significantly.”

Greg McDonough is the Managing Partner at Blackburn Capital Advisors. He’s also the host of the podcast “The Impactful Leadership show”. He sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about the importance of fractional professionals and how they can help companies grow and manage tasks.

Takeaways

  • There’s a tremendous amount of resources available to c-suite executives right now that hasn’t been explored to its fullest potential.
  • Build a team around you that is full of experts in areas you aren’t as well versed in. This will help in your time of need and free you up to focus on the bigger picture.
  • To build the trust between you and your clients is incredibly important.
  • Build trust with your clients by starting on a smaller project for them. Then overtime, keep seeing if they have any other work you can help them with.
  • Being able to relate to the client is important. It helps them to connect with you and also makes it more likely they will hire you for your services.
  • Use a bad experience as a life lesson. You can use the bad experience to help you understand how to avoid that mistake again.
  • Make sure to manage the expectations and that they are agreed upon. You don’t want to end up giving too much of your time away when you have other clients.

Quote of the Show:

4:27 “The way I built trust with my clients is by identifying a very small initial project. It could be a financial analysis, it could be work on PPP. There's a handful of things that I sort of dive into initially that I scope, it's small, it's a handful of hours with a work , there's a value proposition at the end for the client. And we execute on that. And when I deliver it very quickly, it turns into another conversation around what other opportunities they're seeing or struggling with or things that are on their desks that they may want to take off their desks.”

Jennifer Zick is the Founder and CEO at Authentic Brand. Being a fractional professional requires walking the line between supporting your client and telling them what they need to change, and Jennifer sees how all of this works. She sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the latest innovations she sees in the c-suite.

Takeaways

  • Executives are getting caught up in the minor details of the marketing standpoint and not focusing on the big picture and the fundamentals.
  • It’s important to know who your company matters to and why your company matters to them.
  • Don’t focus on pitching yourself. Focusing on how you can help your customers and that will lead to your pitch.
  • As a fractional professional, you want to support your clients but you also have to tell them the truth if something isn’t working.
  • There are plenty of forums for CEOs but there isn’t much out there for integrators as the second in command.
  • You have to make sure you are managing expectations properly when you are a fractional professional, you still have a responsibility to your company.
  • Make sure that the company you are going to work with already has an operating system in place. It makes it easier to be on the same level with them and know where to go from where they currently are.

Quote of the Show:

05:46 “I say there's two questions to ask. It's who do we want to matter to and why should we matter to them? And then how do we intersect their world in a way that's meaningful and relevant. And when we get to that point of intersecting their world, instead of then what do we pitch them, it's how do we help them?”

Scott Belt is the President and Founder at Impact CFO Services. He has over 20 years of business experience and has the proven ability to build strong teams. He joins host Joseph Frost to sit down and talk about some innovations that are up and coming in the world of c-suite executives.

Takeaways

  • Everything has changed since the pandemic started. Businesses went virtual and it was hard for some to adapt, but you need to learn to live in this new world.
  • You can be ahead of the competition if you really dedicate yourself to mastering the new way of doing work.
  • You have to be able to pivot to the online space. All work is being done virtually now and if you can’t keep up with that you won’t see success.
  • Having a strong balance sheet can help your business survive even the most difficult economic downturns.
  • Entrepreneurs don’t see risks. It’s the job of the CFO to show them the risk and make sure they are aware of all the challenges.
  • Using bookkeeping, you can see where a company is going to be heading and then you can see what you need to help them with.
  • Marketing and sales is the lifeblood of every business. They bring in the revenue and they keep the company going.

Quote of the Show:

2:45 “If you can take advantage of the new world and the new way of doing business, you can be very successful because there is a percentage out there that can't, or won't, or has decided to just give up trying. And that is where the opportunities really lie is to take over those companies or to take over that space.”

Brian Smith is the founder of IA Business Advisors an internationally recognized business advisory, consulting, and coaching company. He is also the best-selling author of the "The I in Team Series" and most recently of the "Individual Advantages; Be the I in Team” books, where he shares his knowledge of creating great leaders.

Takeaways

  • The biggest opportunity for c-suites is getting in touch with what their company actually is. They need to be a few steps ahead of the curve.
  • Small businesses who struggle to afford someone at a c-suite level don’t have the same opportunities that those at the c-suite level know are possible.
  • A c-suite professional will look at things in the long term and not just what is going to happen in the next 30 days or 60 days. They will be a few cycles ahead of where you are now.
  • Decentralized leadership is where decision making is delegated by top level management to individuals within a company
  • A fractional professional is a great advocate for changing things up. They will bring a new perspective to your business and can help you grow.
  • It’s a lot more cost effective for small companies to hire fractional professionals than it is to hire a full time c-suite executive.
  • It’s important when hiring someone to understand how they work by using an assessment like Kolbe. This will help you understand how they work and the best way to provide feedback to that employee.

Quote of the Show:

1:30 “A lot of C-suite people have blinders on. They only see what's in their lane and in the old days, we could almost do that. But the way that society has grown, the way that we've become a three dimensional society where we have to know more, we have to be more in touch, two or three steps away from ourselves.”

Nelson Tepfer is the Managing partner at ProCFO Partners. He knows what it takes to help a business increase their revenue and isn’t afraid to branch out into different areas. He sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about some of the biggest innovations that c-suite are looking at today.

Takeaways

  • The biggest opportunity right now for c-suites is expanding beyond a traditional role and more collaboration with others.
  • Fractional professionals are great at rolling up their sleeves and doing the work that other full time c-suite executives are too busy for.
  • Bringing in a different perspective is one of the many positives about a fractional professional. They have worked with many different companies and know what strategies work and what doesn’t.
  • It is the CFO’s job to help the finance and accounting departments grow and they help build a framework for financial management.
  • There’s plenty of extra resources that a fractional professional can bring with them from company to company.
  • Always look for someone who is a fit with you as opposed to someone who’s been in your industry before.
  • Working with a company that has more CFOs can help develop a better process for your company.

Quote of the Show:

20:03 “Always look for someone who's a fit with you, as opposed to somebody who's been in your industry. I think that that is so crucial. From the client side, they just look at it as If you haven't been in this industry, how are you going to know certain aspects of this? The advantage to having a large team as we do have now more than 30 CFOs, we've been in just about every industry imaginable. And probably some of you may not have come across all that often as well, but we've been across so many different industries that we have the industry knowledge on our team.”

Mark Scrimenti has over 15 years of leadership experience in ecommerce, and he is the Fractional CEO at Vivid Path Consulting. He sits down with host Joseph Frost to talk about what some innovations and new ideas are for fractional professionals, such as making sure that you have a repeatable process in place to scale your business.

Takeaways

  • You need to know your customers. You can have a great service or product but no one is going to buy if you aren’t marketing it to the right people.
  • You need to apply the right framework to your business. You want to be able to adapt to changes in your business but you also want a nice structure as well.
  • Listening to your customers is incredibly important. They are the ones who will give you honest feedback which can help grow your business to a higher level than before.
  • You need repeatable processes if you want to scale your business. Otherwise you will not be able to grow your business model to the height you want.
  • It’s good to set “rocks” or goals for your team. It motivates them to focus on a good project and help to develop the company.
  • Communication is key. You need to have good communication with your company as that will help develop a positive work culture.
  • It’s important for fractional professionals to be aligned with the people who will be hiring them, which are typically CEOs.

Quote of the Show:

2:21 “I think everybody pays lip service to being customer-focused. Everybody says, yeah, we talk to our customers regularly, but I question that, are you really talking to your customers regularly? And more importantly, are you listening to them? And what are they telling you? If you talk to your customers, you really listen to them. They're going to tell you how to grow your business. They're going to give you innovation opportunities for optimization

Rob Copenhaver is the President at OSX Sales Solution and has been working in that industry for 30 years. He’s a Sales Xceleration Certified Sales Leader, and also an IMA Certified Management Accountant. Rob joins host Joseph Frost to discuss new innovations that are going on in the c-suite and what a fractional professional brings to a company, such as the reduction in risks.

Takeaways

  • The biggest opportunity for fractional professionals is that the landscape is constantly changing so they have more chances to get into different areas than ever before.
  • You want to sell products to solve problems, not sell to push products. Everything you sell should have a purpose to it.
  • You should bring in an expert to your company who knows more about certain areas than you might yourself. It brings a new area of expertise in and allows you to focus on things in your wheelhouse.
  • You want to make sure that your website is up to date and it looks professional but not too sales-like.
  • You need to have a clear plan in place when it comes to your company. You can’t change from google ad words to SEO or keep changing your logo color.
  • You want to incentivize the sales team because motivating that team can drive more and more sales.
  • The top criteria for hiring a fractional professional is that you have to be willing to make a change.

Quote of the Show:

2:34 “Some of the things that I can see when I walk into companies is when entrepreneurs start their company, they start it because they're experts in their industry. They know what the problems are. They develop a product that fits a niche and solves a problem and it works great and they can go out and they can sell, start to add a couple people. A lot of times it's tough for CEOs and founders to realize the landscape has changed from when they were doing. And they get frustrated."

Bentley Davis, Fractional CTO, comes from a technology background and is an expert at building mobile and web applications. After spending 20 years in the hospitality industry, he decided that he wanted to own his company and left the industry. He worked for a few different start ups and learned so many valuable lessons and skills along the way. Bentley joins host Joseph Frost to discuss new innovations for c-suite executives and how technology can be extremely beneficial for them.

Takeaways:

  • One of the biggest opportunities for c-suite executives now is to enable their team with the most up to date technology.
  • When it comes to technology, on Twitter the No Code community is actually pretty helpful and always provides ideas for medium and small sized businesses.
  • There are plenty of tools that fractional professionals can use to properly utilize technology without having to hire a developer.
  • Hiring a fractional professional can provide fresh insight to your company because they work with so many different companies they see what works and what doesn’t.
  • It’s important for new companies to find their product market fit and to know their customer base. You want to have your market research done before hiring a fractional c-suite executive.
  • Go with the technology that works the best for what the company is trying to do. They might be comfortable with it right away but you should let them know if something works better.
  • You should work with people that fit in with your values of a company. Working with someone whose only motivation is profit isn’t going to end well.

Quote of the Show:

7:45 “Sometimes it helps to have someone who doesn't work for that agency or that group, to kind of look at it from a slightly different angle… I might not necessarily know more than them, but I have a different level of experience. And also if someone's been working in a single company for several years, they don't have the opportunity you and I have, we're working with several companies that we can bring the best of the best of the solutions and technologies in.”

Sharon Means, Fractional Integrator/COO at Entrepreneurial Advisory Institute, has been a CPA for over 30 years. She helps to keep companies on track with their goals and has proven expertise in driving efficiency and productivity through evaluation of financial management systems. She joins host Joseph Frost to discuss what life is like in the c-suite and what some new opportunities are for fractional professionals.

Takeaways

  • With the Great Resignation period that we are going through right now, it’s actually a good time to find people that are looking for work that can better suit your company and move the needle in the right direction.
  • There is a lot more opportunity for people to shift into different roles or jobs now because of how everyone is looking for new work opportunities.
  • You can use EOS tools to better understand what roles work better for people to put them in the best position to succeed.
  • When a fractional professional comes in, it’s not that they are coming in to hold people accountable but rather be more cooperative and encourage positive discourse.
  • You need a three year plan or a five year plan when it comes to a company. That is one thing companies think isn’t important but it puts a deadline on goals and helps motivate employees to achieve them.
  • You want to make sure that everyone you hire represents your core values and is a fit in your company, that goes for fractional professionals as well.
  • A fractional person can help a company that is bogged down and get them moving again. Some fresh insight can really help get things going again.

Quote of the Show:

12:58 “The first thing that I try to do is lead with how can I help you? What can we do for you? I think that that builds trust.

And then we eventually get to a place where we're holding leadership meetings that are very candid and fluid. We have some nice discourse with people agreeing, not agreeing, but getting to a good result.”

With over 8 years of experience with high-technology and business, today’s guest has worked with some of the largest media technology companies in Europe and the U.S. Mo Hossain is now the Fractional CTO at Data Up. Mo joins host Joseph Frost, to discuss ways that those in the C-suite can be more innovative, such as having companies hire multiple fractional professionals to get more advice on their company.

Takeaways

  • The biggest thing that most C-suites are missing out on right now is that they don’t have enough knowledge in the different areas of their business.
  • Technology is improving and changing so dramatically that it’s extremely important to stay up to date on it so you can help all your customers better.
  • It’s a good idea for businesses to have a few different fractional professionals come in and evaluate how they are doing things, that way you get a variety of input and advice.
  • Hiring a full time CTO would cost a lot of money, whereas hiring a fractional person to do that would be cheaper and they get projects and plans done faster.
  • User experience improvements is something that a CTO could get involved in and find the best way to handle it.
  • Because of the changes in social media and it becoming more and more prominent, fractional professionals are having to learn these skills to better help others understand it.
  • You need to take notice of where the trends are in your industry and adapt to them, otherwise you will be behind.

Quote of the Show:

5:31 “A lot of times the way a business has taken the approach of having advisors. I think that's another great way of handling this. Like, okay, these are my board of advisors, whether it's another, you know, maybe technical person or some experience with that kind of say, okay, well that thing, you know, maybe it could come up, we could do something in a little different way because I'm not going to say that I'm always right.

I'm not, I think that's okay. It's because we don't have, we don't always know everything that we need to know potentially in the moment that we need it. Right. So having another expertise, another person coming in from a different angle, I think is always really interesting.”

In between being part of her local curling club, baking, and being a podcast host, today’s guest has found time to be the founder of her own company. Deborah Coviello, the Founder of Illumination Partners, LLC and the host of The Drop in CEO Podcast, brings over 20 years of experience in quality and operational excellence to the table to create unique ways to solve issues that are preventing companies from growing. She joins host Joseph Frost to talk about what are some of the latest developments in the c-suite industry, such as how cross training employees in all areas allows them to be more well rounded individuals.

Takeaways

  • The biggest challenge facing c-suites right now is that they are hyper focused on results and that comes at the cost of peace of mind.
  • There is a difference between results and outcomes. Results only focus on one area rather than getting the whole team together to have an outcome of all the goals combined.
  • You want to make sure your employees are cross trained in all different areas so that they not only are well rounded, but they can help out in all the areas of need.
  • There are risks to every opportunity for c-suite executives, but it’s their job to innovate while trying to mitigate the risks.
  • The best leaders develop great leaders underneath them. A fractional c-suite executive might be in a better position to create leaders within an organization.
  • Sometimes pulling in an expert into your company is the best thing you can do. You won’t be an expert in everything.
  • A fractional c-suite executive can drop in and see issues in a more clear sight than most people who are in the company can see them.

Quote of the Show:

6:32 “You still have to set goals. You still have to measure people. You need to be able to provide feedback, but goals might be different. Are you moving forward? So for instance, I want to make sure that I have people that are cross trained in all the different functions.

So if I need to put more people out there in the sales arena, I can take some of my customer service people. I can bring some people from operations and go face to face with the customer, build a partnering relationship. That's building capability in your organization. So a leading metric you might want to start focusing on or how many people are cross trained in other functions.”

With plenty of experience working as a c-suite executive, today’s guest is the perfect person to talk about life in the c-suite. Luke Templin is the co-founder, fractional CFO, and profit first coach at a2 Advisors. He sits down with host Joseph Frost, and together they talk about new things that c-suites are facing and ways they can improve their businesses, like through the triple cheeseburger pricing model.

Takeaways

  • Almost every business has an opportunity to do a subscription model, and that can provide a larger revenue stream.
  • The triple cheeseburger model; you have three prices where one is no contract and it’s the highest price, then a year contract and a two year contract with lower margins.
  • Pricing isn’t formulaic, it’s really an art form. People need to realize how to use this art form to make their pricing options better.
  • To decide if you are priced right, you need to look at your customer and notice what is important to them.
  • Since fractional c-suites work with other businesses, they get to see what worked well and what didn’t work well with other businesses and only carry over best practices.
  • A fractional CFO adds accountability to a company, typically most CPA firms are hesitant to give guidance but a fractional CFO will share their opinion.
  • 82% of businesses fail because of cashflow. Most owners understand their profit and loss statements well but they struggle to understand the cashflow.

Quote of the show:

2:17 “One thing we put together is, what I call the triple cheeseburger model. So you have three prices, essentially. You have one that's no contract and is the highest possible price. Then you have here's what a year contract looks like and how much volume you have to purchase from us. You go to the midrange. And then a two year contract with lower margins. I call it the triple cheeseburger cause the triple cheeseburger was created in order to sell the double. If you pay attention it's all around us. If you look at Starbucks, it's a lot of pricing.

I call it gaming, but a large option. I don’t know what that at Starbucks is called, you look at the price difference between that and medium, there's not a huge difference and it's really not a huge difference in size either. And so there's a theory that people don't put into pricing. Most people think pricing should be some formula that should be very scientific, but to me, it's an art form."

Valerie Cobb is the Fractional Chief Sales Officer at Lodestar U.R.Y., and she joins host Joseph Frost to talk about how outsourcing can provide a lot of help to other C-Suites. She was not only the Director of the highest selling team in company history at Taxware Systems, but also a private vocal coach for 18 years!

Takeaways:

  • The biggest problem facing c-suites today is that they are missing out on some opportunities because they are closed off to ideas they don’t understand.
  • Outsource work is a great way to save costs and take a lot of work off the plate of those in the c-suite.
  • Marketing needs to drive sales. They have to be well meshed in order for them to work well together.
  • You need to have a process in place before you assign a person to a job, otherwise it’s work without a clear direction.
  • C-suites have to look for the line drawn in the sand between training and consulting and actual fractional chief leadership of any kind.
  • Every business needs to have three core values to survive; Finances, Operations and incoming revenue.

Quote of the Show:

7:28 There are three core things that a business has to have. They have to have finance, they have to have operations and they have to have inbound. They have to have revenue coming in. So imagine, a small company, they can afford $50,000, but they're just really throwing $50,000 away, because it's going to take them four or five years. I have taken statistics talking to people like how long did it take you to ramp that position up?

Oh, four years. Okay. What did you just do for four years? Not only did you lose revenue for those four years because it wasn't really great. But you also paid somebody 50,000 plus benefits for 4 years. So in the fractional marketing world, we do it all the time. We outsource digital, we outsource calls, inbound lead generation from cold calling teams and things like that.”
