In this podcast, we turn our attention to the nose and in particular, olfaction, our sense of smell, and anosmia, our loss of it. We recap the anatomy and physiology of the olfactory pathway. We then review the many causes of anosmia using the surgical sieve and discuss the clinical management of this very distressing symptom.
In this podcast, the clinical anatomy of the facial nerve is discussed in full. We discuss the course of the facial nerve, its motor, sensory, gustatory and viscerosecretory components and the relevant nuclei within the brainstem. We also look at various clinical scenarios, learn the difference between an upper motor neurone lesion and a lower motor neurone lesion of the facial nerve and briefly outline the stapedial reflex and its clinical importance.
