Are you thinking about a trip to Reno, Nevada?

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you our tips for planning a trip to the Biggest Little City in the World.

Getting to Reno:

Reno International Airport—Served by all the major airlines. While Reno has twice been a hub for airlines, both of which no longer exist, it currently is not a hub airport and is, in fact, a nice airport to fly into since it's less crowded, especially compared to its bigger counterpart, Las Vegas.

Driving: Interstate 80 goes right through the heart of Reno on its way from San Francisco to the East Coast. US 395 is the major north-south route traveling from Southern California to the Canadian Border

Train: Reno is served by the California Zephyr and Amtrak buses from Sacramento.

Where to Stay: Downtown and Midtown are two of the more popular areas, but hotels are spread throughout the area (although almost none are north of the downtown area and into the northern suburbs). Room prices are generally much better than in Las Vegas, although when significant events happen, prices can go through the roof just like anywhere else.

Getting around:

Car: The two main streets in Reno are Virginia Street, which is the main north-south road that used to be US Highway 395, and 4th Street, which is the major east-west road that used to be US Highway 40 and is now Interstate 80 Business.

Bus: RTC provides fairly good transit service throughout the Reno area.

Weather: Summers can be warm and dry but nearly as hot as Las Vegas. Winter can be cold (the last time I was there was February, and it goes down to 0 degrees), and spring and fall can be nice but have major temperature variations.

Major Events: Air Ballon races, Airplane races, and a major rodeo.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we discuss several great places to go on a ski vacation, especially if you're a beginner or want to travel to North America or Europe. When picking the ski resorts, we look for highly rated ones that have good beginner slopes, are family-friendly, and are budget-friendly. Also, none of these resorts sponsored this podcast.

Resorts in the North America:

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Vermont

Keystone Resort, Colorado

Big White Ski Resort, British Columbia

Suns Peak Resort, British Columbia

Winter Park Resort, Colorado

Schwietzer Resort, Idaho

Resorts in Europe:

Les Gets, France

Alpbach, Austria

Saas-Fee, Switzerland

La Rosière, France

Bansko, Bulgaria

Here are some tips for planning your trip:

-We say it in every podcast, but you should book early to get the best prices.
-Look for package deals, but also see if you can get better prices by booking transportation and lodging directly with the providers.
-If you are traveling with children, be sure the resort has the amenities that are going to fit their needs, and remember that every age group will have different needs.
-Look for ski-in/ski-out accommodations if they fit your needs and reduce travel.
-Research the ski schools and their ratings to see which ones fit your needs.
-Look at the cost of renting equipment and avoid buying equipment unless you are sure this is something you are going to want to do on a regular basis.
-Think about how you are going to get to the resorts. If you are driving, which you will have to do to most of the North American resorts, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving. If possible, consider alternatives to driving, such as shuttle buses from nearby airports if you are flying in.

In the last episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we discussed great places to go if you want to get into the Christmas Spirit. In this episode, we take it one step further and call out places where you not only get the Christmas feeling but also have a good chance of having a White Christmas.

However, while we give you a list of good places where you could have a White Christmas, no one can guarantee that there will be snow on the ground, but hopefully, you will find some white stuff.

United States:

  1. Lake Placid, New York

  2. Breckenridge, Colorado

  3. Salt Lake City, Utah

  4. Flagstaff, Arizona

  5. North Conway, New Hampshire

Europe

  1. Zakopane, Poland

  2. Rovaniemi, Finland

  3. Krakow, Poland

  4. Innsbruck, Austria

  5. Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic

Here are some tips for planning your vacation, although it should be noted that most of these are similar to our previous video:

  1. Book early. I know that is what we say every time, but for a busy season like Christmas, you must book early.
  2. Check for nearby towns that might save you some money. In Europe, there are usually a lot of smaller towns you can stay in and take a train ride to the major tourist attractions and Christmas markets.
  3. If you're not used to driving in the snow, consider a place where you don't need to, such as Salt Lake City or almost anywhere in Europe.
  4. If you are driving to your destination, make sure that your car is ready for winter driving—check out our Tips for Winter Driving podcast.
  5. Check out travel packages to your destination or tours, but remember it is often cheaper to book directly with transportation providers and lodging than it is to book a package on 3-party sites.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we will talk about one of the hot-button issues in many places right now, and that is over tourism. We will discuss some of the places facing the problem and what you, as a traveler, can do to make the situation a little better. However, there is no way it will be fixed completely without banning tourism completely, which will only hurt the people who depend on tourism to make a living.

One way to solve the over-tourism situation is to try to travel to places facing the problem on the shoulder, especially in the off-season. While this can work in many places, some places pack up and close up shop in the off-season, leading to problems for you trying to find places to stay or eat while you are there. One place that this is especially true is some of the Greek Islands.

Another way to help the locals in busy places is to stay at locally owned lodging facilities instead of the big chains. While some people are nervous about locally owned lodging places, in my experience, the worst hotels have been franchised, and the great ones have been locally owned.

Then there is the Airbnb/VRBO option. The problem with this option is that it has become the "get rich quick" scheme of the 2020s. People are being told the best way to get rich is to buy places on the cheap and then rent them out as short-term rentals and make a killing. However, the bad side is that it takes places to live out of the market, making it harder for the locals to find a place to live, whether to buy or rent.

If a short-term rental is your best alternative (and it might be if you're in Europe with a couple of kids or the US with a big group or pet), check to see if the owner is actually local. Recently, while looking for a place to stay for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday, which is coming up, we found that several of the places we were looking at are owned by people thousands of miles away. This means there is no one local to take care of the place (they hire a cleaning crew to come in, which may or may not do a good job since the owners have no idea), and if there is a problem with the unit, you may have a hard time getting anything taken care of.

Another way to help the local people is to shop and dine locally. Too many people will stay at a resort or major hotel and never leave the property or only eat at nearby chains, which does not benefit the local economy to the degree that a locally owned business does.

When we travel, we try to find locally-owned restaurants to eat in. When we stayed in Hawaii, we found several locally-owned places within easy walking distance of our resort that served great quality food at better prices than most of the chains. One example in Waikiki was the Rock Island Cafe were we got a great meal for less money than my daughter spent of McDonalds.

Let's talk about this episode on our Facebook page.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you tips to start planning a trip to Los Angeles, including the airports, the neighborhoods you should consider staying, some of the unique foods of Los Angeles, and some of the typical safety tips.

Los Angeles has five airports; the fifth is Ontario Airport, a reasonable distance from Los Angeles.

The John Wayne Airport in Orange County is also convenient to Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm.

My favorite two airports to fly into are the Hollywood-Burbank-Pasadena airport, which is in Burbank. It currently has an airport building from 1930, but a new one is under construction. The other airport I recommend is the Long Beach Airport. The one downside is that flying into those two airports is often much more expensive, and direct flights from many parts of the country don't exist.

Of course, the biggest airport in Los Angeles is the Los Angeles International Airport, which is considered by many to be one of the worst airports in the country. It has horrible transit connections and bad traffic, and if you're not staying in one of the nearby communities, it can be a long drive in horrible traffic. However, it is the airport with the most International connections and usually the best fares and cheapest car rental prices.

You can also drive, take a bus, or take Amtrak.

One thing to remember is that in many places in the Los Angeles area, prices are going too high, even at lower-end hotels. You can choose to stay in some of the suburbs if you want to find lower rates, but often, that means driving to the tourist attractions, and the neighborhood may not always be the best.

Also, note is that popular tourist destinations such as Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Venice will be packed on the weekends, and even during the week can be a nightmare with so many people.

In previous episodes, we discussed our favorite places to east in the Los Angeles area. Now, the food scene in Los Angeles has exploded over the last 10 to 15 years, and there are many great independent restaurants and street food restaurants in the city.

Now, Los Angeles isn't known for its own food creations but is known for Tacos, Korean BBQ, and is the founding location of many fast food places, including In N Out Burger, Weinerschnitzel, Del Taco, McDonald's, and Taco Bell.

While the Los Angeles area has limited rail services, buses, and commuter trains, it is not very convenient to reach many of the best tourist locations by public transportation, even though I have used public transit when visiting Los Angeles recently. You use Uber and Lyft, but if you're going to multiple places, it can get expensive, so the best option is probably renting a car.

On this week's episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we list our favorite train trips in the United States. While there are several wonderful trips on Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, this episode focuses on the history and scenic train trips that are shorter but nether less just as spectacular.

A link is included to each website, but none are sponsored (although sponsorships are welcome but will be noted).

Durango & Silverton - Durango, Colorado

Cumbres & Toltec - Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado

Roaring Camp - Felton, California

Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad - Elbe, Washington

Grand Canyon Railway - Williams, Arizona

Skunk Train - Fort Bragg and Willits, California

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad - Bryson, North Carolina

Mt. Washington Cog Railway - Mt. Washington, New Hamshire

Conway Scenic Railroad - North Conway, New Hampshire

The Broadmoor Manitou Cog Railway - Manitou Springs, Colorado

Royal Gorge Route Railroad - Canon City, Colorado

Each of these trains represents a beautiful journey, some lasting just an hour and one that will take one or two full days. While there are many great historic and scenic train rides in the country, these are some of the best.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, two Extended Stay hotels battle to see which is better.

The first is the Chauncy Hotel, part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, a boutique hotel located in the heart of Iowa City, Iowa.

The second hotel in this challenge is Staybridge Suites by Intercontinental Hotel Group, located just up the road a few minutes in Coralville, Iowa.

The Staybridge Suites in Coralville, Iowa, has many positive attributes, including a good breakfast, larger than-average rooms (for the type of room rented), good overall cleanliness, and good value for the dollar.

The one major negative for the Staybridge Suites is check-in and check-out staff who were not very friendly,

Final Grade for the Staybridge Suites is a B+ and very close to an A-.

The Chauncy Hotel also has many positive attributes, including friendly staff, very large rooms, walking distance to the University of Iowa and Downtown Iowa City, convenience of location, and good value for the dollar.

The only major negative for the Chauncy was the breakfast which you have to for, the portions were not great, and it was expensive for what you got.

The final Grade for the Chancy Hotel was an A-1, and it was very close to being an A property. right now, it is only the breakfast that is holding it back.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we discuss renting a car with loyalty.

According to most rental car companies, if they offer their loyalty service at a location, it should be as simple as showing your driver's license and being on your way, but is it?

In the last couple of months, I have rented cars from Budget, Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz, which are my local companies, and I am a member of each of their loyalty programs.

Which one do you think will have the best story, and which one will have a horror story? Tune in and find out.

On this episode of Travel Fun and Adventure, we discuss our tips for planning a great trip along US Route 66.

Route 66, also known as the Mother Road, took people from the heart of Chicago to the Santa Monica Pier in the Los Angeles Area. The road was used by many people trying to escape the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression, which was written about in the famous book The Grapes of Wrath, which came out in 1939 and was followed by the movie the next year.

But of course, Route 66 was a bigger part of the cultural heritage than that, as it was the basis for the television show Route 66, which starred Martin Milner and became even more famous for playing officer Pete Malloy in the television series Adam-12. While Route 66 had been long gone by 2006, it was still a major part of the animated movie Cars.

Our tips for planning a trip along Route 66:

  1. Budget your Trip

  2. How many days do you have?

  3. What time of the year do you want to travel?

  4. Do you want to drive the whole route or just a portion of it?

  5. Who will be traveling with you?

  6. How will you be getting to Route 66?

  7. What Kind of Vehicle will you be using?

  8. How much time do you want to dedicate to seeing attractions and what kind of attractions are important to you?

  9. Check out independent motels from the era along the route.

  10. Do you want to take detours to places such as the Grand Canyon?

  11. Check out local events during your travels.

  12. Connect with the local communities.

  13. Check out the local specialties when it comes to food options.

  14. Be sure to do lots of research with Route 66 guides, whether in book form or online.

For more detailed explanations of all of these tips, be sure to check out the whole podcast.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you tips for saving money when traveling to Switzerland and the surrounding European Countries.

Traveling to Switzerland and the surrounding countries can be expensive, but here are some ideas for saving money.

Travel during the shoulder season- We say this in most of our recommendations: Travel during the shoulder season of fall and spring and save money.

Use Public Transportation - Don't worry, you won't die on public transportation; millions of people use it every day. In fact, in Switzerland, I observed more females traveling. alone early in the morning or late at night more than any place ever has been.

Purchase a Swiss Rail Pass or Eurorail Pass—The Swiss Pass is an excellent deal that includes not only rail and bus transportation through Switzerland but also transit travel in the cities and admission to over 500 museums throughout the country. If you are traveling through multiple European countries, then the Eurorail Pass might be the best option for you.

Look for accommodations that are a good value for the money - If more than 2 of you are traveling, look to Airbnb and VRBO.

Save money on meals - Look for hotels that have free breakfast (although most charge in Europe) and at places like the CO-OP and Migros stores, where they have warm food at good prices.

Take advantage of free attractions - Explore the natural beauty of Switzerland and surrounding countries, as many parks and hiking trails are free.

Visit museums on free days—If the Swiss Rail Pass doesn't work for you, many museums have free days.

Drink tap water - Switzerland, the surrounding area has good water, so you don't need bottled water.

Use No Foreign Transaction Fees Credit Cards

Don't use the conversion—When you go to an ATM or at many restaurants and hotels, you are asked if you want the bill converted into your own currency. Do not do it, as you will end up paying substantially more than if you let your bank or credit card company do the conversion instead. The worst part of these fees is the merchant at the restaurant or hotel doesn't get any of the money. It all goes to the banks.

Hopefully some of these tips will be helpful to you.

AmericInn - Fort Dodge, Iowa
100 Kenyon Rd W, Fort Dodge, Iowa 50501
515-576-2100

Pros:

-Excellent Breakfast (best AmericInn breakfast)
-Comfortable Bed
-Pet Friendly

Cons:

-Unfriendly Staff
-Poor value for the dollar

Holiday Inn - Kearney Nebraska
110 2nd Avenue, Kearney, NE 68847
308-237-5971

Pros:

-Free Breakfast
-Best Breakfast layout I have ever encountered
-Friendly staff
-Convenient location
-Good Value for the Dollar

Cons:

-Was noisy during a blizzard.

While the AmericInn did end up with a grade of C, I cannot recommend it because of its price, poor front desk staff, and distance from the heart of Fort Dodge.

However, I can recommend the Holiday Inn in Kearney, Nebraska. It has the best hotel breakfast layout I have even seen, is reasonable priced, has a good staff, and is conveniently located.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we go over our tips for planning that National Park trip now that you have decided which park to go to.

  1. Decide what kind of accommodations you are interested in, whether camping, cabins, lodges or outside-the-park lodging.

  2. Make your reservations as soon as possible.

  3. Plan what other activities you want to do besides visiting the park itself, whether in the area around the park or on the way to the park.

  4. Plan your days but leave time for rest days if possible.

  5. Do more research on the specific park you will stay at, such as park regulations and tips from other visitors. If you are bringing a pet, be sure to find out where you can take your pet and where you cannot take them.

  6. Check out weather conditions not only at the park itself but other areas you will be visiting. Keep in mind that the weather forecast can change day by day, so keep up track of what the latest forecast is.

  7. Make a list of what you need to bring on the trip, including:

  8. When packing, pack as minimalist as possible, but also remember that you might encounter many different temperatures. For example, on one trip, we had 100-degree temperatures at Craters of the Moon Park and then encountered snow on July 1st on Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

  9. Think about the food and snacks you want for the trip. Consider taking some non-refrigerated microwavable meals that you can eat in a hotel so you don't have to go out to a restaurant when you are tired from a long day.

  10. Don't forget to bring water, and if you are hiking, think about bringing water filtration systems with you.

  11. Bring a first aid kit.

  12. Don't forget all the other items you will need on the trip, such as hiking shoes, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

  13. Maps and navigation systems because there will be areas where you don't have cell signals.

  14. Pet supplies if you bring a pet along on the journey.

  15. When at the park, be sure to Leave No Trace, and DO NOT try to take a selfie with a Bison.

  16. Don't forget about the possible educational opportunities with the children or yourself, for that matter.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we go over our list of things to think about when planning a trip to a national park, specifically, which one you should choose. While the first two items are important to nail down before you start your planning, the rest of the tips are all things to consider while planning your trip.

  • Set a budget for the trip.
  • Figure out how much time you have to take a trip.
  • Decide when you want to go to the park.
  • Think about the weather at the time of year you plan to visit.
  • How do you want to travel to the park - by car? fly? train?
  • What type of accommodations do you want - camping? cabin? park hotel? outside the park hotel?
  • What types of activities do you want to do at the park - rafting? seeing glaciers? visit caves? see wildlife? winter activities?
  • Will you be traveling with a pet?
  • Will you be traveling with kids, and do you want educational activities for them?
  • Do you plan to hike during your stay? Be sure to check the park's types of trails and how difficult they are.
  • Be sure to plan rest days during your stay.
  • Look at online sources from the National Park Service and other informational sites on the parks you are considering.

You will also want to check out the Park Regulations to see if there is anything that you are planning to do that the park does not allow. You may not be allowed to video your experiences in some national parks; drones are not allowed in National Parks, and so on.

Have you ever considered using Hotwire to book your travels? In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we review our experiences with Hotwire and whether it is a good choice for you.

Hotwire was started in 2000, with funding coming primarily from the major airlines. The goal was to provide a new avenue to purchase tickets for seats that the airlines had a hard time filling. Within a few months, they added being able to book hotels, car rentals, and vacation packages.

Hotwire is now owned by the same company that owns Expedia, Booking.com, Travelocity, Orbitz, and others. When booking a hotel with Hotwire, you have the chance not to know what hotel you are booking or see the name of the hotel, which will cost you more and be the same prices you would find on their other agitators.

However, just because you don't know the name of the hotel does not mean you cannot try to find out what hotel you are looking at. When you input your destination and dates, it will give you a map of the area that you are heading to, usually divided up by several subareas. One way to try to find out what hotel you are looking at is to go back and forth from Hot rates to standard rates and look for hotels with the same rating and also the same distance from the place that you input in your initial search. This should give you a good idea of the hotel you may be booking.

That being said, starting a few years ago, we started getting hot-price hotels that were not showing in the standard hotel rates. This caused us to end up getting booked in hotels that were very questionable, including the worst motel experience I have ever had in my life.

When you look at hotels that are between one and three stars, it will tell you the type of hotel brand you should be getting, but as mentioned above, that has not been true lately, and in fact, less than 50% of the time did the hotel end up being a chain hotel at all which does not bother except for the fact that all of them had issues. However, from 3.5-star hotels and above, it will guarantee you that it will be one of 4 brands so you will not have a fear of getting something less.

Another thing to consider when booking with Hotwire is the number of people that will be traveling. If it is just you or you and a significant other who wants to be in the same bed, then you don't have a problem. However, if you are traveling, say, with a couple of children or a friend, so you want a separate bed, make sure that the place you are choosing will give you the option to choose whether you need one bed or two. Otherwise, if it says that the hotel makes the choice, then you could be at the mercy of a place that will try to gouge you for additional money to get a room with two beds.

If price is most important to you and you don't care about getting loyalty points or any of the benefits of being a member of the hotel's loyalty program, Hotwire can be a good option to save money with your hotel stay.

Are you considering an Airbnb during your next rental? On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we will review our tips for booking an Airbnb (or VRBO) and what to watch out for.

One thing that Airbnb does right is its search engine, which hotels can learn a thing or two about. Are you looking for a cabin in the woods? Oceanfront? Lakefront? Off the grid? A castle? These are just a few of the options you have in Airbnb, which is better than even VRBO.

Of course, you will need to know exactly what kind of experience you want, but you do not have to name a specific place like you do on the hotel websites, which gives you much more freedom in finding the place for you.

Once you determine where you want to go, you will want to do a Google search and see if there are any rules on short-term rentals. For example, in Hawaii, there are only certain areas where you can rent a place for under 30 days. You will want to make sure it is legal to rent there so that you do not have an unpleasant surprise.

Once you have selected a place or experience or both, then you will have a large number of places to select from. You will want to filter them by the number of bedrooms, bathrooms, price range, and any other amenities you must have. There is also an option that will allow you to indicate if you have pets so that places that don't allow pets are eliminated.

You will also want to look at multiple properties and see how they differ and which ones would appear to meet your needs the most. Hopefully, you can narrow it down to about three to five properties.

Once you have properties selected, start going through the listings.

You will want to look at the pictures, and if there are specific features you want (say a deck that looks onto the water), then you will want to ensure that the place does have a deck that overlooks the water. One thing to remember with pictures is that many of the pictures will be at wide angles, so the rooms look bigger than they are. Another thing to look at is if the pictures seem to try to avoid showing certain aspects, such as a poor picture of the kitchen or no pictures of the beds.

Also, check the location of the property. Even though you do not get the exact address until you book, by looking at the maps, you can easily find out where the place is located, get a feel of the neighborhood, and see if the house looks like it matches the pictures.

You will also want to check out the house rules to make sure there is nothing in there that could come to haunt you, such as some unreasonable requirements that seem to be popping up on some Airbnb's lately.

Finally, click on the picture of the host, which should give you more information about the host. See if they are from the area that the rental is or are they rent a place in Salt Lake City and live in New York City. With short-term rentals being the latest get-rich-quick schemes, try to avoid people from out of the area.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give tips on finding the right ski resort for a tremendous ski-related trip.

In this list, we give you several items you should consider before you book your trip.

-First, you need to decide what your budget will be. If you are not careful with your budget, you can spend much more money than you would want.
-Second, you must decide what kind of ski resort will be best for your group. If everyone is new to skiing, looking for a resort with a lot of beginner hills will be vital because you do not want to be a beginner and end up at a ski resort with nothing but double black diamond (expert) ski resorts.
-Third, when it comes to the resort's location, there is a lot to consider. Some resorts are located in resort towns such as Park City, Utah, and Aspen, Colorado, and you can stay in the town, but you will pay a price for that. Or you can consider a more resort hotel, which might have limited amenities, but there may also be options in nearby communities that may be about an hour away but have everything you need.
-Fourth, if people need instructions, you will want to find a resort with good ratings for their instructors.
-Fifth, if you have smaller children, you will want to find out what facilities the resorts have for them because they will probably be bored quickly watching mom and dad skiing down hills, so what is there that will give them their adventure?
-Sixth, if you need to rent equipment, you will want to find out how much it will cost you to rent that equipment. Once again, the more famous areas will cost much more for rentals than some lesser-known resorts.
-Seventh, as we always tell you, don't prepay if you can avoid it because it may save you a few dollars but cost you a ton of money in the long run. One thing to consider is when you are traveling and if the resort you are going to will have enough snow for your trip, but what if it has no snow due to a warm winter? If you prepay, you may be out of money, but if you do have to prepay, find out what the facility's policies are if they end up having no snow. The problem is you can wait until you find out they should have snow, but it may be too late to book because ski resorts can book up months to even a year or more ahead.
-Eighth, what kind of local attractions can you explore as you will not want to be skiing all day or every day?

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we review two Hawaii Restaurants. This is our first time doing restaurant reviews on this podcast, so I hope you enjoy them. Please let us know what you think of it.

The first restaurant we review is the Tropics Bar and Grill at the Hilton Hawaii Village in Waikiki.

Like all our dealings with restaurant and hotel employees in Hawaii, the staff was friendly.

Food ordered Me: Kiawe Smoked St. Louis Pork Ribs, Pineapple Juice, and Chocolate Cake.
My wife: Wagyu Brisket, Passion-Orange-Guava, Carmel Sunday.

Good Points: the Spare Ribs were tender and juicy, the Fries were seasoned but not overdone, and the chocolate cake was well chocolate cake. sitting next to the beach.

Bad Points: the Brisket was a little too pink for my wife's taste, it took over 40 minutes for us to get our deserts,

Final Grade: C

The 2nd restaurant is the On the Rocks in Kona on the Big Island.

Food ordered - My wife, daughter, and I all ordered Rock’s Classic Burger, plus we ordered Onion Rings, and I ordered Huggo’s Famous Seafood Chowder.

Good Points: All the food was excellent, location on the water and attention to detail.

Bad Points: Finding a parking space can be difficult.

Final Grade: A

The On the Rocks made our list of the best places to eat on the Big Island, which was well deserved. The entire experience was excellent, with excellent staff and great food.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we compare two hotels that go after the same market, and the hotels are located only a few miles apart in adjacent cities.

First up is the Hampton Inn Cedar Falls Downtown, located adjacent to downtown Cedar Falls, Iowa, built-in 2018.

The Hampton Inn has some excellent public areas, the rooms themselves were clean (see below about overall cleanliness), rooms were up to date with lots of power outlets and USB plugs, the furniture fit with the type of hotel, both check-in and check-out were quick and easy, and some rooms have a nice view of the Cedar River.

In addition, the hotel is across the street from downtown Cedar Falls, which has many restaurants and shops.

While the rooms themselves were clean on further examination, the hotel itself had some issues with cleanliness. For example, while the windows in the room were clean except for the very top of the window, the windows in the hallway looked like they had not been clean since the building was completed, and it also looked like they had not been cleaned around the lights on the entrance canopy. If these have not been cleaned, it makes you wonder what else has not been cleaned well that the customer cannot see.

Finally, the prices at this hotel can be high, ranging from a low of $175 to an average of $200 a night.

The other hotel we reviewed today is the Holiday Inn Express, which was built in 2008 and is located in the City of Waterloo, Iowa.

This hotel had excellent staff, free parking, clean rooms, good maintenance, room furniture matched the type of hotel, and the hotel was overall clean.

The hotel is close to the Lost Island Water Park, rated as the 2nd best water park in the country, and is across the street from the recently opened Lost Island Theme Park.

The downside for this hotel is its walkability, which is horrible as there are no convenience stores or restaurants within easy walking distance, and the area currently has no sidewalks. However, they will be put in along with a multi-purpose trail as La Porte Road is rebuilt over the next few years, but it will still be a hike to restaurants and convenience stores.

Also, the value for the dollar may not be there, was there is a 2018-built Holiday Inn Express in Cedar Falls that often has lower prices than this hotel, although it is less convenient to attractions than the one in Waterloo.

Final Ratings: The Hampton Inn's final score was a B- while the Holiday Inn Express's final score was a C+.

Have you stayed at one of these hotels? Let us know what your ratings would be for these hotels.

Are you planning a car trip this winter? In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure podcast, we go over our tips for having a safe and pleasant journey through that sometimes nasty winter weather.

Tip Number One: Preplan your trip.

  • Note whether you will drive over mountain passes that may require chains in lousy weather.
  • If at all possible, leave extra time to travel. If it would typically take two days to travel to your destination, go three days if you encounter bad weather so that you do not have to drive in the bad weather.
  • While it may be impossible with how short the days are in winter, try to avoid traveling at night, especially in places where you might encounter black ice because it can appear without warning.
  • Remember that rest stops and/or visitor centers in higher elevations may be closed due to snow, so plan alternative stops.
  • Keep an eye on the extended forecast for your trip dates, but remember the forecast will change regularly.

Tip Number Two: Getting ready for the trip.

  • Have your mechanic go over your car completely (especially make sure you check to see how good your anti-freeze is and what temperature it can handle).
  • Get your supplies for the trip together:
    • Emergency supplies for the car, such as extra anti-freeze and oil.
    • A shovel for the car.
    • Snacks and food, including supplies, if you get stuck somewhere.
    • If you drive a front-wheel drive minivan or, say, a pickup truck, you will want some sandbags for extra weight.
    • Extra blankets and jackets.

Other Tips:

  • Check the weather report daily when you are traveling.
  • Drive with your lights on - even if you have daytime running lights they are only the headlight but you need your taillights for visibility also.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we go over our tips to help you plan a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. In a previous podcast, we went over our tips for travel to Oahu, and while some of the tips may seem familiar, there are many that are exclusive to the Big Island.

  1. Be sure to plan your trip well in advance; however, avoid prepaying for hotels and car rentals.
  2. If you're flying direct from the mainland, you will most likely land in Kona, but if you change planes in Honolulu, then you fly into Kona or Hilo.
  3. If you have the time, split time between Hilo and Kona so that you don't have to travel across the island and back in one day.
  4. When booking an Airbnb/Vrbo, be careful about where the place is located. While the condos are probably in either Kona or Hilo, single-family homes could be far from the cities and maybe a very long drive to even a small store or any restaurants, but if you want to be far from people, they will be perfect.
  5. The best time to visit is either November to April or April to October. April to October is usually drier, but as we experienced, it can still rain a lot in certain points on the island, while November to April will have fewer tourists.
  6. The island is bigger than you think, and the drives can be long, so plan ahead on where you want to go to keep from multiple long drives on back-to-back days.
  7. Even attractions need to be booked in advance as they can sell out and be booked directly from the attraction.
  8. Plan to rent from the major rental car companies as there are a few smaller companies, and the ones I found were more expensive than the big boys with fewer options in types of vehicles and may require to taxi to their location from the airport.
  9. Book your car rentals and lodging in advance so you have something reserved but check rates about a month and only a week out because you might find some better rates. We saved $500 on our car rentals between Oahu and the Big Island by checking back to see if some lower rates popped up, but if they didn't, I still have something reserved.
  10. Be sure to get involved in the local culture which I found harder on the Big Island than on Oahu, which I was surprised at, but still seek out the cultural opportunities.
  11. Remember that most restaurants close by 7 p.m., and even McDonalds will close by 8 or 9 p.m., so plan on eating earlier.

Those are our tips. Book that trip and have a great time.

On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we tell you our picks for the best places to eat on the Big Island.

One thing to know when you are traveling in Hawaii, especially away from Waikiki, is that most restaurants close between 7pm and 8pm so if you are usually a late eater, that is something you will want to keep in mind or else on the Big Island your choices may end up being either Denny's or Jack in the Box (yes even McDonalds closes at 8pm), so be sure to check those closing times.

So here are our favorites on the Big Island (the list starts on the south side of Kona and works its way to the north side, then down to the Hilo area).

L&L Hawaiian Barbecue

Planning a trip to Oahu but don't know what attractions to visit (besides the glorious beaches, of course!!) Well, in this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you the list of our favorite attractions on Oahu, some of which are free and others that can run a great deal of money.

One Hawaii experience you must have is attending a Luau. There are many available, some good and some not so good, and they can get really pricey; however, there are many out there, so find one that fits your needs.

Here are links to our favorite attractions (they are not in any particular order, and no attraction has paid sponsorship to be on this list.

Sea Life Park

Polynesian Cultural Center

The Dole Plantation

Diamond Head

Manoa Falls

Pearl Harbor

USS Missouri

Hawaiian Railway Society

Kualoa Ranch

Hawaii Glass Bottom Boats

Hawaii WOW Tours (Gondola Tours)

And here is one that did not make it into the podcast, so its a bonus for those who check the show notes:

Waimea Valley

This place has a little of everything, from a great beach, a historic site, a botanical garden, and a waterfall.

From this list you have a great start to your Oahu adventure.

Here are our picks for the best restaurants on the island of Oahu. Before traveling to Hawaii, I went to ChatGPT to see what it would come up with for restaurants in addition to my experience, and it came up with two that were permanently closed during the pandemic and a couple of others that were already ones we would pick.

Here are our picks for some of the best restaurants on Oahu; many of them feature a version of Hawaiian food, some with Hawaiian and Asian influences, plus some with mainland American food influences.

Rock Island Cafe
1911 Kalakaua Avenue

Rainbow Drive-In
3 Locations on Oahu

Zippy's Restaurant
16 Locations on the Hawaiian Islands

Cinnamon's Restaurant
2 Locations

Island Vintage Shaved Ice
Royal Hawaiian Center

Scoop of Paradise
66-145 Kamehameha Hwy 510

Haleiwa Joe's
2 Locations

Highway Inn
3 Locations

Helena's Hawaiian Food
1240 North School Street

Maple Garden Restaurant
909 Isenberg Street

Haleiwa Beach House
62-540 Kamehameha Hwy - North Shore

Egghead Cafe
1210 Dillingham Blvd #8

Our last recommendation is to try some street food. Whether it be a food truck or highway stand (there are many of them heading up the north shore), you will find some great food and some great local flavors.

Most of these restaurants are very affordable, and in fact, you will probably spend less per person than if you went to McDonald's, at least the Mcdonald's across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

In this week's episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you our honest reviews of two Hawaiian reports, one in Waikiki and the other on the Big Island in Kona.

First, the employees at both resorts were awesome, friendly, helpful, and efficient.

The two resorts are a contrast; the Hilton Hawaiian Village is in the heart of the action in Waikiki and is extremely business even in the off-peak times, while the Houlua Resort is quieter and more laid back, and there are a lot fewer people.

The major downside to both resorts is that neither one is pet-friendly.

Hilton Hawaiian Village

The Hilton Hawaiian Village is in the heart of the action In Waikiki.

The rooms are clean, the grounds are nice, there are many shops within the complex, is extremely walkable, has fantastic transit access, and is family-friendly.

The major downsides are that the complex can be extremely crowded, parking is expensive, and they charge a resort fee of $50.00 per night.

Rooms can range anywhere from $200 to $750 dollars a night.

Shell Vacations Club Holua Resort at the Mauna Loa Village

The Holua Resort at the Mauna Loa Village has great parking, the grounds are nice, and is also family-friendly.

The major downside of the resort is that the living room furniture was stained and showing its age, the kitchen cabinets were from another century, and there is very little you can walk to.

Condos at the complex can run anywhere from $200 to $500 a night.

Both of the hotels earned a B+ score, and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

What are some of the surprises you may find on a trip to Hawaii? On this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we take a look at some things that might surprise you when making a journey to paradise on the islands.

  1. Unlike most places, off-airport car rentals, especially those in Waikiki, are more expensive than the airport locations.

  2. You will find the most friendly service people.

  3. Traffic is bad, bad, bad, unless you in some very rural places on the islands other than Oahu.

  4. Drivers will drive either 20 miles per hour over the speed limit or 10 miles under the speed limit, which may not be a surprise depending on where you are from.

  5. The speed limits are low except for some rare exceptions.

  6. The islands have many micro-climates so just because the weather is nice on one part of the island, it could be bad just a few miles away.

  7. Don't expect to get a Lei when you arrive, although you can get one on the first floor of the parking garage near Terminal 1, or you can pay too much for one at one of the shops in the airport.

  8. Tiping information will be in your face at almost every restaurant you go to.

  9. Prices are going to be high, for example, except to pay double for McDonalds over what you would pay at home. Remember, almost everything has to be shipped to the islands.

  10. Despite seeing a lot of unhoused (homeless) there is not a lot of panhandling.

  11. There is lots of street food to be found so be sure to seek it out and enjoy it.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give the low down on our trip to Hawaii. Courtyard by Marriott or Hilton Garden Inn. Both are premium hotels that are tailored for business travelers, but could they be the right choice for you? In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast we compare a Courtyard and a Garden Inn to see which one is best.

The best features of the Garden Inn: An update room with the best desk setup I have encountered, clean, recently renovated room, and furniture that fits the class of hotel, and a friendly check out.

The best features of the Courtyard by Marriott: Friendly check in, excellent public areas, room maintained well, furniture that fits the class of hotel, close to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport and the Mall of America, and friendly check out.

What Garden Inn needs to work on: Not a friendly check in, grounds area is primarily a sea of parking for the connected casino, no walkability, expensive breakfast, very few restaurants in the area (almost nothing in the casino).

What Courtyard by Marriott needs to work on: Their grounds are better than the Garden Inn but not by much, and expensive breakfast.

Overall hotels are pretty good however in this case the Courtyard by Marriott came out ahead with a grade of B- while the Garden Inn rated a C+. While I would probably not stay at either one of these particular locations again due their locations, for the most part they do have clean, comfortable rooms that are well maintained.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we review two hotels.

The first one is the Brunswick Inn in Brunswick, Maine.

The other is the Cobblestone Inn & Suites Main Street in Marquette, Iowa.

Good Points:

The Brunswick Inn:

A good check-in experience; the rooms were well maintained, the future was keeping with the status of the hotel, the public areas were very nice, including a fireplace, there was available parking, it was across the street from the Amtrak Station, is pet friendly, and the hotel had a tone of the character being a home from the 1700s.

The Cobblestone Inn & Suites Main Street:

Updated rooms with plenty of power sockets and USB points; it was walkable, is pet friendly, had a very convenient location being across the street from the Mississippi River and across the river from Pierre Du Chein, Wisconsin, and friendly check out.

Not so Good Points:

The Brunswick Inn:

The shower was not clean (someone's long hair was all over the shower), and the employees were not empowered to wow the customer to try to make up for it, would not consider this a family-friendly hotel, poor value for the dollar.

The Cobblestone Inn & Suites Main Street:The slowest internet speeds I have encountered at a hotel in years, a very rude check-in person, the bed was worn out, and there were repairs in the bathroom to fix the shower rod but the repairs had not been repainted.

Grades:

The Brunswick Inn: The final grade for the Brunswick Inn is a B-, C+. If they would have done something to make up for the hair in the shower it would have probably helped their grade.

The Cobblestone Inn & Suites Main Street: The final grade for the Cobblestone Inn and Suites Main Street was a C,

Our tips for having a great trip to Las Vegas:

Be sure to set a good budget for the trip if you want to gamble, set aside a fund for gambling that you know you will spend, and not worry if you lose it all. Know that everything could cost more in Las Vegas.

Check your dates - Make sure there is no major event such as SEMA, Formula 1, NASCAR, or the Superbowl happening during your stay.

Look for deals - Your best bet on the weekends for a good deal is off of the strip, but you can find deals on the strip during the week.

When Comparing prices, make sure you are adding the resort fee.

The Leisure or "Low Cost" Rental Car companies are not always the lowest price.

If you can avoid renting a car at the airport and avoid all the airport taxes. Your hotel may have a rental car counter in it, or there will probably be one nearby.

When traveling up and down the strip, consider using the "Duece" double-decker buses that travel the strip.

Avoid Las Vegas Blvd, especially on weekends. There are parallel roads that will get you to where you are going a lot faster.

The SMUT pedlers will be everywhere; they may even try to throw stuff at you.

Beware the people dressed in costumes, as they will allow you to take a picture with them but then want a tip, and recently they have been getting really aggressive about wanting bigger tips.

Beware of the con games that will be along the sidewalks and walkways. They are only there to separate you from your money, and if you see people winning, they are part of the con and are there to make you think you have a chance.

You will encounter homeless in Las Vegas, and beware of the storm sewer tunnels where they often live and try to avoid contact with them.

Remember if you are in Las Vegas during the winter, despite the fact you are in the desert, the nights can get really cold.

Get away from the strip or downtown to find the real Las Vegas and find great locally-owned eateries.

If going to the swimming pool is important to you, be sure to check with the hotel you are planning to stay at to ensure that their pools when be open when you come.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we go over a list of the remaining buffets in the Las Vegas area. While buffets used to be an inexpensive way to eat in Las Vegas, with the casinos enticing you in with really cheap buffets, those days are now long gone.

While there was a time that every casino in the Las Vegas area would have a buffet, many of them closed, and the pandemic was the final nail in the coffin at many of the casinos.

In their place, the casinos are putting in food courts which helps them make additional money from rent and food provided by someone other than the casino, which also saves the casino money. Some of the food courts have the same fast food you can get anywhere else at a lower price, while others have quick-serve restaurants from celebrity chefs, and you pay a steep price because of there fame. I am not saying the food is good because some celebrity restaurants have great food, but the value for the dollar is very low as you can get comparable food at a place without a celebrity's name attached to it.

I need to thank the following for the information in this week's episode:

Las Vegas How Too Guide for the list of active buffets.

Mental Floss for some of the information on the history of all-you-can-eat buffets.

Vinepair for additional information on the history of all-you-can-eat buffets.

There was a time not too long ago when Las Vegas was a cheap place to go. There were plenty of low-cost rooms to be found, inexpensive buffets/restaurants, and parking was free. Well, those days are gone.

Today the prices of rooms at the hotels and resorts in Las Vegas continue to rise into the stratosphere, most of the buffets are gone, and those that are left, for the most part, are high-end ones (there is a couple of exceptions with we will talk about in a couple of weeks), there is a few inexpensive restaurants hanging around, the resorts and hotels are now charging for parking, and we have seen the rise of an invasive species called the resort fee.

The resort fee is supposed to provide you with amenities, but it is not to benefit you as the customer, only the pocketbooks of the companies that own the hotels and resorts. If the fee was truly for amenities, would you be able to opt out of it if you were not needing those amenities? In theory, yes, but in reality, no. The resort fee is designed to allow the hotels and resorts to show lower prices to lure people in and for the hotels and resorts to be able to pay lower commissions to online booking sites and to travel agents.

However, some hotels and resorts that don't charge resort fees, and this week we will give you a list of properties not only do not have a resort fee but also have free parking and free Wi-Fi. These may not be the big-name resorts, but they may offer a good value for the dollar, however.

Also, please note that this information could change by the time this podcast goes live, so be sure to do due diligence and check for yourself.

First, thanks to the Feeling Vegas website for helping with this list.

The hotels that currently have no resort fees:

Binions Hotel Apache

Bluegreen Club 36

Casino Royale Best Western Plus

Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center

Desert Rose Resort

Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham

Hilton Garden Inn Las Vegas Strip

Jockey Club

Travelodge Las Vegas Airport

Wyndham Grand Desert Resort

If you have ever flown, you probably have some pet peeves when it comes to flying. The Upgraded Points website did a survey of passengers to see the biggest pet peeves of the respondents. I have used this list along with looking at blogs and comments, along with some of my own pet peeves.

Here are some of the biggest pet peeves:

*Flight Cancellations

*Flight Delays

*Mishandled Baggage

*Long Wait Times for Luggage

*Additional Fees

*Gate Changes (especially last-minute changes).

*The pain of rebooking flights

*TSA Lines

*People crowding the gate before boarding starts

*People reclining seats

*When people are asked to stay seated until those with tight connections are allowed to get off, but everyone gets up anyway

*People trying to take on too much in carry-ons

*Rude people

*Loud people

*Customer service

One of the easiest ways to get around Europe is by riding trains, as they cover a large portion of Europe.

Mentioned in the podcast is a website and youtube channel that we highly recommend for more information about traveling in Europe:

Wolters World

Wolters World is not only a great website for information but also a great youtube channel.

A great source of train travel is:

The Man in Seat Sixty-One

The big question is, do you need a rail pass or not? The best way to answer this question is to figure out where you want to go on your trip.

Will you be staying in a major city such as Paris or Amsterdam and only make a couple of train trips during the trip? Then probably just buying individual tickets will make the best bet.

A good source for individual tickets is:

Rail Europe

Please note that they do charge a fee for each ticket bought, which is not refundable, so if you can purchase directly from the operator, that is the best bet, but some sites, such as the SNCF (French) website, has so many issues trying to buy tickets it might just be easier to pay the fee depending on the price of the ticket (You can also buy tickets from ticket machines or ticket counters at the rail stations).

However, if you plan to go to multiple cities or even use a place as a hub and go every day to someplace different, this most likely a rail pass will be your best option.

Figure out the cost of the rail tickets individually and see if a pass will be a better value which usually starts at a pass for 3 days and can go up a month at a time. You will also want to determine if you will be staying in one country or traveling to multiple countries.

If you are going to be primarily in one country, you will want to explore if the country has a country pass, such as the Swiss Pass. However, maybe you want to do a couple of side trips, say into Germany or Austria. You can buy individual tickets for those trips but still have a country rail pass for the majority of your travels.

Some country-specific rail passes can also have other benefits, such as the Swiss Pass, which offers not only rail travel but also most transit lines, bus lines, and admissions to more than 500 museums.

Also, be sure to see if you can afford 1st class tickets, as the 1st class section of the train will often be quieter than the 2nd class section. There were times when the 2nd class section would be completely full, but the 1st class was not that packed.

Be sure to check out rail maps to see the best way to get where you are going. The Swiss Rail Network has a great map that is in PDF format; however, you want to do a good search to find the map as it is only available on the Swiss Rail website by buying a wall map at $29.99.

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we give you our reviews of two hotels. Unlike previous reviews, we are not comparing the hotels side by side but instead are doing two individual reviews of the hotels.

The two hotels reviewed:

Baymont by Wyndham LeMars, Iowa

The Baymont Inn ended up with a final grade of B-/C+.

The hotel is somewhat upgraded, having both additional plug outlets and USB ports; however, they only have one available plug at the desk where you are supposed to do your work.

The Baymont Inn also had excellent Wi-Fi that allowed the streaming of youtube videos with no buffering.

The hotel is also pet friendly.

However, the bed was very worn out, and the toilet was plugged.

Overall we did not rate the motel as having a good value for the dollar.

Holiday Inn Express Rumlang, Zurich, Switzerland

When rating European hotels, there is going to be a change from hotels in the United States. For one, lodging rooms in Europe are much smaller, much like rooms were in the United States back in, say, the 1950s. Also, European hotels are going to be held to a higher standard for walkability.

Overall the Holiday Inn Express rated very high in such areas as Check-In, all aspects of the room, wi-fi was excellent, public areas, check-out, and overall value for the dollar.

The only downside for the hotel was the restaurant which got a bad grade. While you expect slower service in Europe than you get in the United States but the service here was pathetically slow despite the fact there were never more than two other tables having customers in the two and a half hours I was there. Also, there were very few Swiss items on the menu as they primarily cater to people from the United States.

Does the thought of flying into a European airport make you nervous? In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we tell you what is going to be different and what will not be different when you fly into a European airport when compared to an airport in the United States.

  1. The first thing you will notice about airports in Europe is that almost all of the major airports have airport hotels attached to them. While some US airports have on-site airport hotels, such as Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, and Dallas, many airports do not.
  2. You will find much better transit and rail connections at European airports compared to the pathetic connections in the United States. With such good connections, there is less of a need for a rental car than in the United States.
  3. Rental car rates can be as unpredictable as they can be in the United States but in general, rates appear to be overall lower.
  4. In my experience, security people tend to be more friendly than TSA agents in the United States. In fact, in Switzerland, a majority of the ones I encountered were very friendly.
  5. Duty-Free shops are much more in your face than they are in the United States. In fact the majority of European airports, after going through security, you have to go through a duty-free shop to get to your gate, and in some airports, you have to walk through a duty-free shop after baggage claim.
  6. You will find more landside shops than in the United States. Landside is a pre-security screening, and at many airports, there are many shops on both sides of the security screening.
  7. You are more likely in Europe to have to board your plane by bus instead of directly on a jet bridge.
  8. European airports have places where you can store your baggage.

What is similar:

  1. Border patrol agents are about the same as the United States. Don't expect them to be very friendly but efficient.
  2. Airports can be a nightmare in Europe as they are in the United States, although in general is better.

Also to note:

Each country does its own Air Traffic Control, which can lead to problems such as in France right now with the Air Traffic Controllers on strike causing many flyover flights to be canceled. I flew from Zurich to Paris and back and both flights were delayed but still flew most likely because they are on Air France.

Attractions can cost a lot of money, and if you are not careful, you will spend much more than you can afford. However, there are ways to save money on your trip when it comes to booking attractions.

Here are our tips for saving money on attractions:

-Set a budget

-Decide where you are going

-Create a list of what you want to do

-Look for ideas on the websites such as Orbitz or Tripadvisor and see what catches your attention.

-Once you have a list of attractions you want to experience, look for coupons and other deals online.

-Check for coupons.

-Go to the provider's website as you will often find the best prices directly with the vendor.

-Have alternative days and times when you will go to the attraction. Many places are now using dynamic pricing, where busy days are going to be more expensive than other days of the week because if you can go on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, or during the off-peak season, so much the better.

-Check for free activities in the area. You can mix some expensive attractions with some free activities to save money.

-Check on alternatives to the expensive activities that you and the family will enjoy just as much.

-Buy tickets in advance.

Looking for a great Youtube Channel that talks about travel? We recommend:
Wolters World YouTube Channel

Want a great passport holder that will also hold debit/credit cards, cash, and a vaccine card? Here is a great one that we are using:
Passport Holder from Amazon (not an affiliate link).

Here are our tips for planning a trip to Europe or many other overseas destinations:

  1. Order your passport months in advance.
  2. Book your reservations early - however, do not prepay unless you have to as you might find lower prices later on.
  3. Don't travel in Europe during August, as that is when most Europeans do their summer travel.
  4. If you're not used to walking a lot, start doing some walking because you will do a lot of it in most of the world.
  5. Check your phone plan.
  6. Don't rent a car unless you have to.
  7. Don't plan too much on your trip or see too much in one trip.
  8. If you fly to, say, Europe from North America, have a full day planned on your day of arrival.
  9. Remember that hotel/motel rooms are much smaller in Europe so if you have a bigger family, you may want to look at apartment rentals.
  10. Don't forget to buy a converter.
  11. Look at buying rail passes, and if you can afford it purchase 1st class rail passes.

This week we put two economy hotels to the test to see which one is the best. The Motel 6 is, of course, the low-price leader and is going up against a Howard Johnson by Wyndham which has a historic name but the brand has no the same one that many people thought of through the late '50s through the 1970s.

Here is information on the two motels that will be battling:

Motel 6
2881 Touhy Avenue
Elk Grove Village, IL
847-803-9400

Howard Johnson by Wyndham
1925 East Higgens Road
Elk Grove Village, IL
847-495-9165

Both hotels are actually on the same street as Touhy becomes East Higgens Road at the intersection just to the west of Motel 6.

Some good points from the Motel 6: Check-In, Room Maintenance, Cleanliness, and Pet Friendly.

Some bad points from the Motel 6: are the neighborhood the hotel is in as it is not family-friendly, and the thin walls that cause you to hear the slightest noises.

Some good points from the Howard Johnson: Better character than the average motel, room up to date in some ways, and maintenance.

Some bad points from the Howard Johnson: Check-in experience, room size, cleanliness, noise, and check-out.

When it is all said and done, both motels earn a very low D- just barely above an F and we would not recommend either motel.

Whether your rent cars regularly or just occasionally, you probably have a list of pet peeves when it comes to car rentals. If traveling by airplane is not enough, then you get to the car rental center, and you have even more headaches. In this episode, we go over some pet peeves when it comes to renting a car and also tries to explain some things that might happen.

Among the pet peeves of people renting cars:

Taxes- Yes, you have to pay many taxes when renting a car, and sometimes the taxes have nothing to do with the infrastructure you use in the area.

Finding a gas station near the car rental center - Well, at least with GPS, this is easier than it used to be, but it can be frustrating when there is no gas stations near the airport.

Long Lines - it can be annoying when you have to wait in long lines after a long flight, and you want to get to your hotel and crash however, there is a solution to this problem.

Cars Not Properly Maintained - You expect to get a car in good condition, but what if the person who rented the car before you did not tell the car rental employees of a problem or they don't do something they're supposed to do?

Fees for bringing the car back late - Yes, if you return your rental late, they will charge you.

Not having your reserved car - You get to the car rental counter, and you find out that instead of the compact car you reserved, they are giving you a 15-passenger van. Sometimes it's good when you get a free upgrade but others not.

Pushy Sales - Do you want coverage? Do you want an upgrade for only twice what you reserved? How about a GPS?

No Help with the features of the car - Today's cars have more electronics than ever, and some of it is very confusing. Don't expect any help from the car rental company, as they rarely provide assistance with the features of the car, not even a piece of paper to help you with the basics.

The radios turned up full blast - Ever get into a rental and start it only to find out the radio volume is set to the maximum setting?

No Ice Scraper in Winter or Washer Fluid - I rented a car recently with no ice scraper, and it had no washer fluid in it. Oh, and by the way, there was white stuff was falling from the skies.

Inconsistent policies between offices - Very frustrating when car rental offices, even from the same company and run by corporate, have different policies, whether that will be for debit cars or how you return the car.

Cars not cleaned properly - Ever wait 40 minutes for a rental car while they clean it, and when you get in it, the car is still dirty?

Are there any other pet peeves that we missed? Get on our facebook group and let us know your frustrations with car rentals.

In last week's episode, we discussed things you could do on a trip to or from Yellowstone National Park. In this week's episode, we discuss towns either near Yellowstone or within a few hour's drive. Some of these towns could be a great base for Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons and others are just good places to spend the night on the way to or from the park as they might be a little too far for daily trips into the parks.

Here are the towns and links to their visitor information (this episode is not sponsored by any town or visitors bureau).

West Yellowstone, Montana

Gardiner, Montana

Cooke City, Montana

Jackson, Wyoming

Livingston, Montana

Are you planning a trip to Yellowstone? Yellowstone is one of the most incredible places you can visit. From the beauty of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone to the amazing activity of Old Faithful to the many other sites to see.

While Yellowstone and its sister park, The Grand Tetons, are awe-inspiring, there are so many things to see and do within a few hour's drive of the parks that you should plan to visit before and after your visit to the parks.

Here are just a few examples of the things to see and do in the area around Yellowstone:

Craters of the Moon National Monument - Craters of the moon, which is located south of Arco, Idaho, and about a three-and-a-half-hour drive from the Yellowstone west entrance. Made up of volcanic rock and sagebrush, the monument is an incredible site with many hiking trails and sites to visit.

Waterfalls - There are many waterfalls outside the park to visit, and while they may not have the majesty of some other waterfalls, the best part about them is that they will have fewer people visiting them.

Ghost Towns - The states around Yellowstone are filled with ghost towns such as Bannack and located west of Dillon, Montant, and Interstate 15.

Arco, Idaho - The first town in the world whose power was provided 100% from nuclear and located north of Craters of the Moon.

Beartooth Highway - Called by Charles Kurult the most beautiful drive in America, the highway starts just outside the northeast entrance of Yellowstone at Cooke City, Montana; the 68.7-mile highway that hits an elevation of just below 11,000 feet ends in Red Lodge, Montana.

In Cody, Wyoming, you have the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The Buffalo Bill Center is actually 5 plus museums in one and is well worth a visit whether you want to know more about the showman and the legendary Annie Oakley, see historic firearms, the nature in the area and the Native Americans that inhabited the land.

Museum of the Rockies - Located on the campus of Montana State University in Bozeman, the museum features many exhibits, including great information about the dinosaurs that once roamed the area.

Livingston Depot Center - Located in the town of Livingston, Montana, 89 miles north of the north entrance of the park is a great place for anyone interested in trains.

Little Big Horn Battlefield - Located along Interstate 90 south of Billings, Montana.

Lewis and Clark Caverns - Located along highway 2, which was once US Highway 10, the caverns are east of Butte, Montana, near Whitehall.

Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center - Located just outside the west entrance of Yellowstone in West Yello

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we pit a Super 8 motel in rural Iowa to a Travelodge in the heart of Palm Springs. Yes, they may be in very different areas, but they are both budget-friendly motels that should be a good value for the dollar.

In fact, both hotels are part of the same parent company Wyndham Resorts. While most Super 8 motels are built in new construction, most of today's Travelodges are rebranded from other hotel chains.

In the past, we have had good experiences with Travelodges despite it being the low-end brand of the Wyndham chain. Theoretically, the Super 8 will provide you with a boring rectangular building but should be a little above a Motel 6. Travelodge on the other can be almost anything, and in this case, is a former Quality Inn hotel with an abandoned restaurant (the restaurant chain closed its doors at no fault of the hotel) to the classic stucco exterior.

One thing to remember about our reviews is that we rate the lodging facility by its expectations. We do not expect a Super 8 to compete against a Hilton Garden Inn but instead rate it for what it is and do that we all of our hotel reviews.

The Super 8 exceeded expectations regarding its Breakfast and did average for most of the other categories we rate for. The Travelodge did really well regarding the hotel's character, but sadly that was its most positive feature because it would garner several grades of F's, including check-in, which turned out to be a major ordeal, its not existent breakfast, and bad wi-fi.

What do you think the final grades will be?

Like all the major hotel brands, Marriott has been creating new ones like their competition. In addition, they had acquired brands, such as in 2016 when they bought out Starwood Properties. In this episode, we go over the major brands of Marriott so that you can get a better idea of what Marriott has to offer.

Marriott

Also, thanks to The Points Guy for additional information on the brands.

They have several luxury brands, including the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, JW Marriott, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, the Luxury Collection, W Hotels, and Edition.

However, we focus mainly on their non-luxury brands since our podcast focuses on finding you the best value for the dollar.

Premium Brands:

Marriott - Like many of its competitors, Marriott seems to be forgetting its namesake brand. While there are some good Marriott hotels, there are also many of them that are very tired despite often being more than the completion.

Westin- Westin, which came from the Starwood acquisition, is now focusing on wellness, including having healthy menus and quality fitness centers and featuring Heavenly bedding. Westin was well known for their signature properties that included round buildings such as in Seattle, Los Angeles and Detroit although the Detroit one is now a Marriott and the General Motor's headquarters.

Sheraton - Also acquired in the Starwood acquisition after being acquired by Starwood in 1997. While there is still over 500 Sheratons still out there, it seems to have taken a backseat since the acquisition.

Autograph Collection - Properties that are more boutique in nature.

Le Meridien

Tribute Portfolio

Design Hotels

Renaissance Hotels

Delta Hotels - Another Marriott acquisition came a year before the Starwood acquisition. Delta has a few properties in the United States but are mostly in Canada.

Marriott Vacation Club

Gaylord Hotels

Select Brands:

Courtyard by Marriott - the Courtyard by Marriott is comparable to the Hilton Garden Inns and, in fact, was probably the reason Hilton started opening the Garden Inns. They are more business-oriented hotels that have a restaurant.

Four Points by Sheraton

Springhill Suites

Fairfield Inn

AC Hotels - One of the new brands that Marriott has been opening lately, such as the one in downtown Portland, Oregon.

Aloft Hotels - I reviewed Aloft Bricknell Miami in a previous podcast and gave it a great review.

Moxy Hotels

Protea Hotels

Extended Stay Brands:

Residence Inn - While they tend to be a more upscale extended stay, I have found some great deals at Residence Inn although some of their older properties such as in the Seattle area are getting very tired.

TownePlace Suites - I have had great experiences at TownePlace Suites; they are an excellent choice for extended stays, especially if you can get a good deal.

Element Hotels

Marriott Executive Apartments

Homes & Villas by Marriott

Does the thought of booking a flight make you nervous or even break out in hives because the choices confuse you? Well, on this week's episode, we discuss our best tips for booking a flight.

  1. Nover book with a third-party app - This could lead to disaster if something goes wrong, whether the flight is canceled or you can't make your flight. If you go through the third part app, you have to go through them to solve any issues, and you are behind the passengers that book directly to get your issues solved.

  2. Join the airline's frequent mileage program - No, we are not telling you to play all the credit card games to get airline mileage. What we are telling you to do is join the program because you will have an easier time getting things solved if you have an account with the airline.

  3. We will go over the basic booking categories such as basic economy, economy, refundable fares, regular fares, light fares, and all the other types of fares the airlines will throw at you.

  4. There are many types of seats on the plane, including economy, extra-leg room seats, premium economy, domestic first class, business class, and international first class. We will give you the basics.

  5. Is there a best day to fly?

  6. What are some ways to find the best flight?

  7. What about children flying alone?

  8. Is it cheaper to fly with connections?

In this episode, we also recommend you check Seat Guru to find the best seats on the particular kind of aircraft you are flying. It will tell you if the row of seats you are sitting in has no window, limited recline, is too close to the restroom, etc. It is an excellent source of information, and this podcast is not sponsored by them.

In Episode 51, we went over some bucket list trip ideas to do with kids from ages 5 to 12, so in this episode, we go over some bucket list trip ideas to do with the teenagers.

Among the ideas we share:

A trip to Cedar Point Park - (full disclosure we own two shares of Cedar Point). The reason we recommend Cedar Point is its emphasis on thrill rides.

Discover your roots - If you live someplace other than where you grew up, take the kids to see where you grew up. Or another idea is to head to wherever part of the world your family originally immigrated from.

Take them to an island - Take them to an island, but it has to be one with something more to attract them than just beaches. Take them to Hawaii or the Canary Islands, someplace that has not only great beaches but also other activities to get them excited.

Take a Cruise - Several cruise lines have areas of their ship dedicated to teenagers. If you have kids that are both teenagers and younger kids, a Disney cruise may work well for you since Disney does offer activities and places just for teenagers. However, if all the kids are teenagers, you will probably want to look at a cruise line like Carnival that will not have so many younger kids running around.

Travel to a major urban area - Consider taking the teenagers to a major urban area such as New York, Miami, Seattle, or any major urban area they have not been to and would be excited to explore.

A place where they will be immersed in a new culture - Take them someplace where they will be able to encounter a new culture, such as Quebec, Mexico, or any other place around the world where they can experience a new culture.

Major Ski Resort - If your family is into skiing, then take them on a trip to a resort that you have never been to, such as Park City, Utah; Whistler, British Columbia; Aspen, Colorado, or any other ski resort that is different from where you would normally travel.

Visit a place in another country, such as Porto, Portugal, that has a very low crime rate, and you can give your teenagers some freedom to do things on their own where you don't have the worries you would in some other places.

Volunteer Vacation - Take a vacation where you volunteer to help those in need.

Planning a trip to the North Oregon Coast in the cities of Astoria, Seaside, or Cannon Beach? In a previous podcast, we went over our favorite places to eat on the Oregon Coast, and in this episode, we go over some are favorite activities on the Northern Oregon Coast, including:

Movie Locations: There has been a number of great movies filmed probably the most famous being "The Goonies". There are several sites to see from the movie, including the Goonie's home, the jail that the gang breaks out of, and several others.

Astoria Column: Even if you are not up to climbing the actual tower, the views from the tower parking lot are incredible and worth a visit.

Columbia Maritime Museum: The museum is a must-stop and provides a fantastic history of the dangerous waters where the Columbia and the Pacific meet.

Astoria Trolley: For something on the relaxing side, take a ride on the historic Astoria Trolley. The trolley runs along the Riverfront along tracks that used to see freight trains taking seafood products from Astoria to the entire country and bringing weekend tourists from Portland.

Historic Buildings: If you are into historic architecture, then Astoria is a great place to get your fill of both residential and commercial historical buildings. You will also find some in Seaside and Cannon Beach.

Seaside: Seaside has plenty of attractions, from the Seaside Aquarium which is a great value for the dollar despite its small size, the promenade to the huge arcade where kids will spend hours, to the bumper cars and tilt-o-whirl.

Fort Clatsop/Lewis And Clark National Historic Park: Explore the area where the famous explorer's Lewis and Clark stayed at on as they reached the farthest point on their journey across the then-European unexplored country.

Fort Stevens State Park: From the wreck of the Peter Iredale to the cannon positions to wildlife viewing areas and many trails, the park has something for everyone.

Ecola State Park: The park sits just north of the town of Cannon Beach and has many walking trails, including a hike that gives you the best view of the Tillamook Rock lighthouse; sits on a rock base a mile offshore that was nicknamed Terrible Tilly.

Waterfalls: While there is not as many waterfalls in the area as there is south of here, there is still three waterfalls, Umbrella Falls, Youngs River Falls, and Fish Hawk Falls that are within an easy drive.

Beaches: Of course, who can talk about the coast without talking about the beaches and the North Oregon Coast does not disappoint.

For more information, here are links to the visitor bureaus in the three main cities. I have always had the one in Astoria to be the most friendly and helpful of all three but they all are very willing to help you out (these agencies do not sponsor this podcast).

Two business-oriented upper-class hotels. One is close to the Tampa Airport the other is in the heart of the hip Brickell area of Miami just south of downtown Miami.

We review both of these hotels, comparing them but also noting their intended market, one being for travelers to the Tampa Airport and the other looking for a place to stay in the heart of Miami.

Please note that neither of these stays was sponsored, and I paid for my trip, so I am giving you my honest opinion of these two hotels.

Hilton Garden Inn Airport Westshore
5312 Avion Park Drive
Tampa, Florida, 33607, USA
813-289-2700

Aloft Hotel Miami Brickell
1001 SW 2nd Avenue,
Miami, Florida, USA, 33130
305-854-6300

Both of these hotels do very well in our ratings.

The Hilton Garden Inn Westshore is very convenient to the Tampa International Airport, being only 3 minutes from the Airport Car Rental Center and only 6 minutes from the airport itself.

Meanwhile, The Aloft Hotel Miami Brickell is located right in the heart of the hip Brickell neighborhood of Miami, which is just across the Miami River from downtown Miami. The hotel is just a block from the Miami Metro Rail station and a block and a half from the Miami Metro Mover people mover system that will take you downtown and offer connections to Brightline and the Omni loop, which will take you north of downtown.

Overall the Aloft Hotel is a better value from the dollar as it was less expensive than comparable hotels or even lower-end hotels in the area. However, the Hilton Garden Inn is not a great value for the dollar as there are other hotels in the area that offer a comparable experience for less money.

However, when looking at all the categories, we look at the two hotels tie. They are both good hotels.

10 Flight Segments on 6 Airlines
5 Hotels from 5 different brands
6 Rental cars from 2 companies.
1 Train Trip
1 Intercity Bus Trip

Like any trip, this one has its high points and it had its low points. It shows the difference between what good customer service will do for a company and what bad customer service will do for a company.

Be sure to listen in and see who did well and who did not do well and stay tuned toward future episodes where will do in-depth reviews of some of these encounters.

Here are our tips for riding a train such as one of Amtraks.

-On short-distance trains, there is coach and business class.
-On long-distance trains, there are coach and sleeping cars.
-There are two types of Amtrak long-distance trains on the east coast there is single-level Viewliner cars and on the west coast, there are Bi-Level Superliner cars.
-Sleeping car rooms include the roomettes, bedroom, and handicap rooms plus on the Superliner cars you have Family Bedrooms.
-If you are going to book a sleeping car room be sure to book early, very early, possibly even a year in advance.
-Don't have close connections when you are riding long-distance trains as trains can run late.
-Bring your own snacks even if you are in a sleeping car.
-If you are in a sleeping car bring duct tape.
-If you are riding in a coach bring a pillow and blanket and if in a sleeping car you may want to bring in your own pillow.
-Coach passengers are currently not allowed to use the dining car, you are limited to the cafe car.
-Business class on the short-distance trains is not glamorous like on an airplane but can be quieter than in a regular coach.
-Bring cash for tips.
-There will be a conductor and assistant conductor on all trains. On long-distance trains, you will also have car attendants, dining car attendants, and cafe car attendants.
-On long-distance trains where the train needs to be serviced or the conductor/assistant conductor the train will have a break that can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, the employees will tell you how long but don't go far.
-Enjoy the scenery.
-Bring games for the kids as there will be no cell phone or internet coverage on much of the trip so have kids download movies or offline games.
-Use headphones.

Today we review both a Surestay Plus by Best Western which was my first time staying at a Surestay and an AmericInn by Wyndham. Our previous visit to an AmericInn did not go well and it has the lowest rating of any place we have reviewed on this podcast yet, however, one of the two we rate on this podcast will take the position as the worse but which one will it be?

Surestay by AmericInn

Best Western by Wyndham

D+ Overall Grade B-

The Surestay Plus by Best Western ends up with the worse grade we have given a motel yet. Who will be the next lodging facilities to be rated? Keep listen to the podcast to find out.

You want to plan a special trip but just don't know where to start. Well, don't worry we have the steps that you need to use to plan a wonderful trip that will leave lasting memories.

Steps:

  1. Set a Budget!
  2. Are you a planning nerd of the family or not? If you are working with someone who is not and if you are not a planning nerd team up with one.
  3. Figure out who is going on the trip, what their interest is, and how the budget is going to work for the number of people going.
  4. Sit down with everyone and find out what their thoughts are.
  5. Choose the time of year you want to go.
  6. Figure out what time of the year you want to or have to go.
  7. Figure out what kind of trip you want such as a trip to a beach, an island, mountains, skiing, etc.
  8. Do not limit yourself to only one place and leave your options open. Put together 3 or more places you would enjoy going to and figure out which one will have the best value for the dollar.
  9. Be sure to look at packages but also how much it would be if you book them separately because often you can save money and book everything seperately despite the misconception that packages save money.

There was a time when hotels had one primary brand such as Holiday Inn, Hilton, Best Western, and so on. But today hotel brands are breeding like rabbits as hotels try to create all new brands to attract new travelers.

Until 2010 there was only one Best Western brand which was also difficult because of its eclectic variety of motels and hotels it was a little hard to figure out what you were getting. Therefore in 2010 Best Western split into three categories and then in 2014 added 11 additional brands. While it can be confusing Best Western appears to have differentiated its brands better than most.

Here are the different brands and what category they fall into.

Surestay by Best Western Economy

For many, including myself, there are times that having an RV and being able to travel when and where you want has a magical sound. However, many people purchase RVs before thinking through the purchase and end up regretting it because they make payments on it but the RV does sit 90% of the time.

So before you buy here is what you should think about:

  1. How much would you actually use the RV?
  2. Do you have a place to store the RV or are you going to have to pay for storage space.
  3. Do your kids have a hard time being cooped up for long times?
  4. Calculate the cost of ongoing maintenance of the vehicle.
  5. Will you have a problem driving such a large vehicle or towing a big trailer.
  6. Will you need a tow vehicle?
  7. Will your state require an endorsement on your license or an entirely different license?
  8. While you hope you don't purchase a lemon but if you do you probably will not be protected by Lemon Laws in your state.
  9. Think about the time it will take to set up the RV when you arrive at your destination and then break it down.

Before purchasing an RV you may want to rent an RV to see how you truly like it. I would highly recommend that you rent for at least a week to learn what it is like to have an RV and live with it.

In a previous episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast, we rated the best hotels by their chain. This week we do something a little different as we rate the best hotels by category.

There are three primary categories that we will be looking at: Budget, Midscale, and Premium Brands. The other category that we will not be looking at is the Luxury Brand since we often look at the best value for the dollar and our target market does not stay at Luxury Brands either as they are usually traveling with children.

In the future, we may consider looking at luxury brands as are listeners change.

The problem with some of these categories is that the hotel chains decide where their individual brands fit in the categories and sometimes we do not feel they make sense. In fact there is one business travel magazine that rates the brands and they have several more categories that truly make a lot more sense but for this particular episode we are looking at the categories that hotel chains put their brands in.

Here are the winners by category for 2022:

Best Budget Hotel: Red Roof Inn

Honorable mentions: Pear Tree Inn and Travelodge

Midscale Hotel: Best Western

Honorable mentions: La Quinta Inns and Drury Inns

Midscale Extended Stay: Homewood Suites

Honorable mention: Executive Residency by Best Western

Premium Hotel: Hyatt

Honorable mention: Four Points by Sheraton

Premium Extended Stay: Residence Inn by Marriott

Honorable mention: Staybridge Suites

What do you think of our winners? Do you agree or would do you feel another brand deserves to win an award.

For those not familiar with the different types of airlines it can be confusing what is the best type of airline to fly and what is the difference between them. After all, there are legacy carriers, LCC carriers, ULCC carriers, hybrid carriers, and other types of carriers.

Legacy carriers are basically the airlines that are supposed to be offering a premium service or have been around for decades. Today we are down to three major legacy carriers in the US and they are United Airlines, Delta, and American; in Canada, you have Air Canada and in Europe, you have a host of carriers including British Airways, KLM, and Air France, and Lufthansa. However, if you are flying coach there is not a whole difference between these carriers and the other carriers.

Then there is the Low Coast Carriers or LCC. In the United States, you have Southwest, and Jet Blue is sometimes called an LCC but really is a hybrid. In Canada, you have West Jet and in Europe you have Easyjet. The LCC carriers only have one class of service (which is why Jet Blue with its Mint Class on transcontinental and European flights isn't a true LCC.

Finally, you have the Ulta Low Coast Carriers which in the US are Allegiant, Spirt, and Frontier, in Canada you have Swoop and Flair with more coming on line, and in Europe, you have Wizz Air and the most infamous ULCC's Ryanair. These are the airlines that will nickel and dime you for everything but with the Legacy carriers doing the same thing in some cases is there really a difference. Also in the United States, you have some new entrants in Avelo and Breeze Airways which are supposed to be a cut above the other ULCCs.

We had taken several trips with our children, but then we added a new element when we adopted a dog since we could no longer tell our kids we could not have a dog because our landlord would not allow it but once we bought our own house we could not use that excuse anymore.

This trip gave us a new perspective on traveling with both a dog and kids. Here are some tips that we took away from this drive.

  1. If renting a car, it is better to pay a little more for a bigger vehicle than not having enough room.
  2. No matter how many stops you plan on your road trip it is not enough. Your dog and your kids will always need more stops than they would at home.
  3. Don't make your days too long. I try to avoid driving I am not familiar with in the dark which is easier said than done when things don't go the way you plan or those extra stops get you.
  4. When renting a car think about the customer care you will receive if something goes wrong. You want a company that will take care of you no matter where you are. Therefore stick with the major rental car companies if you are traveling long distances.
  5. When you have a pet be sure to call ahead to the motel/hotel and find out about their pet policy and if you have reserved a pet-friendly room. Otherwise, you might get to the hotel and find out they will not let you stay there or at least your animal.
  6. On the last day of the trip, do not plan a lot of stops as the kids will start getting antsy about getting home.

What do you think of our tips? Are we on track or derailed? Let's talk about it on our Facebook page.

In today's episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure podcast, we take a look at great places to eat in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

When we look at great places to eat we try to find family-friendly places that the kids are going to enjoy as much as the adults. When it comes to kids you cannot help but know that fast food is going to come into play. If you look at our list from Los Angeles half the places were fast food places.

However, we also avoid national chains because why travel somewhere to only eat the same thing you could back home besides you can usually find better quality food at locally owned businesses and in Los Angeles, there is a lot of great independent fast food places. However, when it comes to fast food we could not find any decent independent fast food places that could make the list in the Twin Cities (If you know of places there please let us know in the Facebook group or email us and we will let people know).

Here is a listing of the restaurants in our podcast this week:

Sixt Car Rental has only been operating in the United States since 2011 but is actually the oldest car rental organization out there having started in Germany back in 1912 before there was even much of a road network.

While Sixt offers the basic rental cars that all the other companies offer but also has what is probably the largest selection of premium vehicles in the industry.

Taking kids on a trip can be a trying experience, but the same could be said of taking a pet with you. But your pet is part of the family so how can you leave them at home? In today's episode, we talk about what you should consider before taking your pet on a trip and some helpful tips to make the journey a better experience.

Questions you should ask before taking your pet on your trip with you:

  1. What kind of personality does your pet and will that make them a good traveling companion.

  2. If you are flying, what are the policies of the airline.

  3. What type of climate are you flying to and is your pet going to be comfortable in that climate?

  4. Are you traveling internationally? Check out the policies of the country you are flying to.

  5. Do you have all your pet's paperwork?

  6. Is your pet microchipped?

  7. Consider whether your pet would do better with a family, friend, or pet sitter than on the trip.

Tips for traveling with your pet:

  1. Plan some short trips at first to get your pet used to travel.

  2. Get a pet carrier that your pet can stand up in and lay down in.

  3. Plan more stops to walk your pet because they will probably need to go to the bathroom more often than normal.

  4. Bring more treats than you think you should.

  5. Consider a pet harness that will hold your pet in the car seat.

  6. Does your pet have something they love to sleep and relax on? Try to bring it with you.

  7. Book in advance and confirm.

  8. Watch out for those pet fees!

When you think of a chain lodging facility you often think of just another cookie cutter place that will be the same as any other. However, chains can differ and in today's episode, we take a look at two Holiday Inn Expresses.

The  first one is:

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Oklahoma City Downtown -Bricktown
101 Main Street
Oklahoma City, OK 73104

The second one is:

Holiday Inn Express & Suites Shreveport - Downtown
201 Lake Street
Shreveport, LA 71101

Will they both be the same cookie-cutter facilities you come to expect from chain lodging facilities or will one come out on top of the other? Listen in and find out.

This week we take a look at ways that you can save money or stress by showing alternatives to the major expensive attractions in Lo s Angeles and include some ideas for low cost or free things to do.

Instead of going to Disneyland which can be very expensive instead go to either Magic Mountain or Knotts Berry Farm which will take a lot less money out of your pocket. (For full disclosure I do own some shares of Cedar Fun Parks which owns Knotts Berry Farm).

Instead of Universal Studios or the Warner Brothers Studios consider going to the Paramount Studio Tour or Sony Pictures Studios. Another alternative is the Motion Picture Arts Museum which recently opened.

On busy days if you are looking to go to the beach consider going to Huntington Beach instead of Santa Monica Beach or Venice Beach. While both Venice and Santa Monica are incredible places that were part of my childhood they can be absolutely insane, especially on busy days. While traffic will still be a Los Angeles nightmare normal while going to Huntington Beach, you have a lot fewer tourist activities along Hungtington Beach so can be less stressful.

Instead of going to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art go to the Getty Museum instead. While the LA County museum is not overly expensive $25 for adults, $10 for children but the Getty Museum is free.

Other places to consider:

Griffith Park Observatory which is free although parking is not and on weekends will be a nightmare plus cost money for the Planatoriam but is worth a stop along the rest of Griffith Park.

The Los Angeles City Hall Observation Deck is free and a great way to get a birds-eye view of Los Angeles.

The African American Fire Fighter Museum

Olvera Street

California Science Center

Natural History Museum $15 Adults, $7 Children.

Petersen Automotive Museum is $17 for Adults, $12 for Children.

Jett Propulsion Laboratory.

Pasadena City Hall

Caltech

Old Pasadena

Naples Canals in Long Beach

Long Beach Waterfront

Most people dread the thought of flying. If you are flying coach in the US or Europe you know you are going to get minimum service, in seats that probably have poor legroom, plus the thought of going through the TSA checkpoint...

But first, you must book your ticket and what should be an easy task is not so easy because which airline will be the best? Who has the best fare? They told me the fare but how much more do I have to pay for seat selection, luggage, and anything else the airline is going to charge me? Will the fare we chose allows us to select seats or will our kids end up sitting in different seats from us and be bothering the Flight Attendants and their neighbors the whole time?

These are just some of the daunting questions that can be asked when you trip to book a trip, but we are here to give you some helpful tips to help you book a great trip, at a great price, that will work for your family, and the people you will seating next to.

Here is our list of tips:
1. Google Flights is your friend.
2. Scott Cheap Flights is a great source for airfare bargains if you are traveling internationally.
3. Should you book that red-eye?
4. Southwest doesn't offer assigned seats, can I guarantee my family will sit together?
5. Do some airlines tell you the cost of extra legroom seats upfront?
6. To package or not to package?
7. Book hot airfares when you see them, don't wait.
8. Look at alternative airports.
9. Could you end up booking too soon or too late?
10. What is the total price of the airfare?

Here are ten restaurants that we would highly recommend in Los Angeles County:

Bobby's Place
140 N. Lake Street, Pasadena

Lucky Burger
531 E Walnut, Pasadena
640 S. Arroyo Parkway, Pasadena

Shakers
601 Fair Oaks, South Pasadena

The Original Bob's Big Boy
4211 West Riverside, Burbank

The Front Yard
4222 Vineland, North Hollywood

Phillippe's
1001 North Alameda, Los Angeles

El Paseo Inn
Olvera Street, Los Angeles (across the street from Union Station)

The Original Pantry Cafe
877 South Figoura Street (at west 9th)
(Cash Only)

Pink's Hot Dogs
709 North La Brea Avenue (at Melrose Avenue).

In N' Out Burger
9149 S. Sepulveda, Los Angeles (at west 92nd Street)
Eat your meal and watch planes from around the world land at LAX.

While there are a lot of great restaurants in the Los Angeles area, these are the ones that stand out the most. There is only one major chain in the group, and that is In-N-Out which many consider a must-stop place, but the reason we put this on the list is because of its unique location across the street from a place to spot airplanes landing at LAX.

Pink's Hot Dogs also has several mall locations throughout Southern California plus locations in Hawaii and the Philippines; however, there is only one original Pink's that is more special than the rest.

Are there restaurants that you think we should have put on our list?

Traveling with children can be an adventure in itself. Traveling with teenagers can create a whole different dynamic depending on what stage of a teenager they are currently in. Now traveling with a teenager that has to use crutches due to a bad auto accident changes everything in fact traveling with anyone who has limited mobility can be an adventure.

On March 12th, my family started a 10 day trip to Los Angeles. There were several reasons for the trip. First of all, we wanted to visit my brother and his wife who had never had the opportunity to get to know our children. Second, it was an opportunity to show my children where I grew up, look at some of the places I lived, and hear a few stories that they have never heard about me. Of course one of the reasons we also wanted to take them on the trip was so that they could have fun.

However, when my daughter was the passenger in a car that hit a semi that was making an illegal maneuver, our whole trip changed. There would be no trip to Knotts Berry Farm and some of the other activities we had planned would have to be put aside. Having never had the experienced of being on crutches I did what all good fathers would do and looked for ideas of things we could do that she would enjoy doing and not be too difficult on her.

However, before we even made it to Los Angeles we had to travel there on multiple airplanes and we had no idea how well that would all go.

This episode deals with the steps we took, how well the airlines worked, and how well the lodging facilities took care of us under the circumstances. We would also talk the research we did and what we found out about traveling with a child on crutches.

United Airlines has a long and storied history.

As I child I flew many times with my family between our home in Southern California to Detroit to visit family back when such fabled airliners as the DC-8, DC-10, and 747 were covering runs between the two cities.

As an adult, I have flown United many times mainly out of Spokane to such places as Phoenix and Charlotte. The time we had major problems was during major storms including a blizzard while changing planes in Denver that caused us to sit for most of the day.

However, in the last few years, United gain a reputation of having bad customer service that culminated with the removal of a doctor from one of their regional flights by dragging him off the airplane that garnered national attention.

But times seem to be changing for United Airlines. In the past year they have made some changes that indicate that they are looking to go head to head as a premium carrier against Delta Airlines instead of racing to the bottom like American Airlines. This includes reversing its decision to remove Inflight Entertainment from the setbacks and having all mainline planes having IFE by 2025. This is just one of the ways they are trying to turn things around.

The question is, what is United Airlines like to fly in 2022? Recently I flew from Los Angeles to Chicago on a United Airlines 757-300 on a red-eye flight then changed to an Air Wisconsin-operated CRJ200 for United Express between Chicago and Cedar Rapids.

I will give you an honest opinion on the entire travel experience from booking the flight on the United website, the airport experience, onboard experience, and overall customer service. I recently review a trip on American Airlines so how will the flights compare and has United turned the corner. Those questions and more will be answered in this podcast along with travel news that has broken recently.

Disneyworld has been a place that almost every child dreams of going to. It is supposed to be a magical place where families have a wonderful time.

However, every year it becomes more expensive to go to Disneyworld and despite the increases in price Disney continues to cut the Disneyworld experience. This year not only are they raising prices but they are also talking about cutting down on food portions and the restaurants while increasing prices at the same time.

Yet that is not the only place where Disney has decided to charge. Parking lots at the hotels that used to be free for guests staying at the hotel are now charging. Disney also used to provide free bus service from the Orlando Airport to the resort hotels but cut that out and now the private company that provided the bus service now charges between $30 and $60 to ride the bus. They have also put Fastpasses out of the reach of most people.

Also, there are also the things that went away during COVID that still have not come back. The most glaring example of this is the parades that have delighted children for years. They were cut back during the times of COVID and still have not returned and Disney has not indicated if and when they return. However, in some good news, Disney has reinstated the trams.

The question is, has the time come for families to find alternatives to the Magic Kingdom that will still entrain the children?

One alternative to Disneyland is Knott's Berry Farm located just a few miles away in Buena Park. Growing up my father did not like how packed Disney would be and so he would also take me to Knott's. (For full disclosure I do own a small number of shares of the parent company of Knott's). I didn't understand until I was an adult that we would go to Knott's but I still have a fantastic time and had the opportunity to ride more rides because there were fewer people than at Disneyland. When planning a trip for spring break with my family were trying to decide between Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm since my kids have been to neither but when we priced it out Knott's was less than half the price of Disneyworld with two hotel rooms compared to one at Disney.

So is it time to switch?

Who is the best airline in the United Stated in 2022? We looked at 10 carriers and used some statistics such as on-time performance, lost luggage, and cancelations then we considered how the airline does meeting the expectations of the travel. Now I know most people do not expect much from airlines these days but some carriers have higher expectations than others. Finally, we look at other aspects of the airlines including their route network; frequency of their flights; your chances of getting stranded if something goes wrong; if they have in-flight entertainment in the back of the seats, or offer some other form of entertainment, and how well it works.

Some who rate the airlines only look at their statistics which can give you a false impression of how good an airline is. For example, airlines may have some of the best numbers but that airline may not have the route network most of the competition has and does not serve as many places where bad weather can be a factor.

A perfect example is Hawaiian Airlines which rates as number one or two in all the statistics. However, Hawaiian has very few routes that fly to places that are known for bad weather such as their Honolulu to Boston flight. In addition, a large part of the Hawaiian system is not operating right now such as flights to Tokoyo and the rest of the Pacific Rim.

So listen in and found out which airline will rate the best in 2022.

If you are experienced in planning a trip sometimes things can go wrong. Whether it be the lodging facilities you have booked turn out to be less than you expect, mother nature interfering with plans for your daughter's birthday, or the rental car you rent is a little on the small side.

In this week's episode, I tell you about a trip to Detroit that we took my family on a couple of years ago. We had just bought our first home so we needed to try to keep the budget for this trip low but still wanted to take the trip since the primary purpose was to visit my aunt who is my parent's last living sibling and she is in her early 90's.

Therefore we tried to save money when it came to our rental car and motels which never seems to work out. Is it possible to put three teenagers in the back of a Hyundai Sonata? Will that economy motel work out or will you have a serious case of the scaries, Find out as we do this weeks episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure Podcast.

When you think of family-friendly hotels, usually business-oriented hotels such as Embassy Suites and Crown Plaza Hotels are probably not on the top of most family's lists of places to stay. However, depending on when you are traveling you can get some great deals at these business-oriented hotels but are they the right hotels for a family vacation?

In this episode of the Travel Fun and Adventure podcast, we take a look at two business-oriented hotels and see which one will come out on top and if they are the best places to stay with your family.

One hotel is the Crown Plaza Hotel hotel in Arlington, Texas located near the Six Flags over Texas theme park. The other is the Embassy Suites Hotel Medical Center in Dallas, Texas just a few miles from the Crown Plaza hotel.

So how do we rate lodging facilities when we stay at them? Here is the things we look at but note not all of these things will apply to each hotel:

Reservations
Location
Check-In
Room - Cleanliness
Room - Maintenance
Room - Size
Room - Up to Date with today's technology
Transit Access
Walkability
View
Breakfast
Checkout

Which one of these hotels wins? Listen in and find out!

Traveling with children can be an experience and if you are not prepared it can be an experience you do not want to repeat. In today's podcast, we give you some helpful hints on making a journey with children easier.

We talk about planning your trip, things to bring along on the trip, and most important the amount of time you will need to schedule your trip because unlike a journey with only adults you need to allocate more time to get from point A to point B.

You make ask yourself how can I give you advice on traveling with children, do I have children of my own and have I traveled with them? The answer to that question is yes I do have children and we have put many miles on the highways and byways of America with our children.

It didn't start off easy but we made it happen considering we were thrown into the fire when it came to traveling with children. My wife and I became foster parents thinking this will be a way to have a baby since we couldn't have one the old fashion way. One day we got the phone call but it was not a baby then needed a home for, instead it was 4 children who needed a home for a month. Well a year later we adopted the children and in a month we were taking a long-distance car trip when we moved 1000 miles away.

That trip was followed up with many others so this advice comes from someone who has been there, done that.

Thank you for listening and be sure to check out our Facebook group where you can ask questions, comment on the podcasts, and make constructive suggestions.

Who is the best company to rent a car from in 2022? We take a look at all the major companies and see who ranks the worst and who ranks the best.

Renting a car can be a daunting task and prices are not that competitive so it is important to pick the right company that will back you up if there is a problem.

My name is John Michael and I love to travel but have also worked in the travel industry. In fact, I spent several years working for a rental car company so was able to learn things about the rental car industry from the inside and why you should rent from one company and maybe not some other company.

Among the things we look at when developing these reviews is 1) Personal experience. Experience with the company is necessary to know how good they are and how they react when something goes wrong. 2) Prices - Sometimes you can get really great deals on some cars from one company or another but overall what you would be considered low-cost auto rental firms don't necessarily have the lowest prices. 3) Number of locations - a rental car company is not good for you if they don't a location where you need one. 4) How pushy are their employees, do you have to tell them no a hundred times or do they threaten you if you don't take coverages? 5) Quality of the cars - this one is a little harder lately with a lot of rental car companies cutting back on their fleet and keeping their cars long but the question is, how well are they maintained?

Sometimes the best-laid plans just don't happen.

I was scheduled to speak at a conference in October of 2020 in Miami which also happened to fall on the son's 18th birthday. We decided to make a quick trip to Europe while flying some unique planes, going to the Mercedes and Porsche museums, and riding a unique train in Switzerland that is currently being rebuilt making it more common with other trains in Switzerland.

Well, you can guess what happened. At first, I hope that the COVID-19 crisis would pass before our trip but as the summer of 2020 continued on it was clear that going to Europe was going to be out of the question. It was not until late September that I was finally notified that the conference I was supposed to speak at was going to virtually so I would not need to head to Miami.

Instead, we made new plans which meant staying in the United States but still doing things that my son would enjoy for his birthday plus a few surprises thrown in. Find out what those things were and how we made the best of a situation that was totally out of our control. Did my son get a birthday that he would never forget? Listen in and find out.

Trying to decide where to stay on your trip can be difficult especially with the many hotel chain consolidations that have taken place over the last few years. In this episode, we rate the hotel chains from worst to best.

We look at all the hotel chains in the United States but leave out any hotels that are primarily luxury hotels and leave in the ones that the average person would want to stay at.

Among the criteria we look at:

-Our customer service experience with the chain.
-Value for the dollar.
-Family Friendliness
-Pet Friendliness
-Number of Locations
-Quality of the Hard Product.
-Quality of the Sof Product.

What we do not look at is the chain rewards program since unless you are staying very frequently at a certain chain the points programs usually do not benefit the infrequent traveler.

When it comes to the legacy air carriers in the United States, we are down to three which are Delta, United, and yes American. While these so-called legacy carriers still carry a majority of the passengers, there is many airlines today that compete against the legacy carriers including Ultra Low Cost Carriers such as Spirt, Allegiant, and Frontier, and the hybrid carriers such as Jet Blue and Southwest.

Despite having flow hundreds of thousands of miles over a lifetime until 2020 I never actually flew American Airlines. However, today I live by an airport that is served by only one airline and it is American through their wholly-owned subsidiary regional carrier Envoy Air. So recently I have taken a few flights on American and will give you an honest review of how I feel about them and will issue them a grade. Will American Airlines be able to make the grade or will it flunk?

When we review an airline we look at how it compares to its competitors and what the expectations are for that airline. Your expectations are different if you're flying an airline such as Spirit than if you flying say a premium Asian carrier such as Singapore or a middle eastern carrier such as Emirates.

On most of our airline reviews, we will review the website, customer service phone center if we need to call them, policies, check-in, airport customer service, flight attendants, the seats, and any other service or amenity.
