The Ageing Millennial Podcast: Recent Episodes

Ammar Basit

The Ageing Millennial Podcast is for those looking to hear about issues common to us all (e.g. low self-esteem, toxic relationships, challenges of marriage, divorce, wanting therapy or doing things alone but afraid of what people will say, hating your job, etc) and how to deal with them to lead a happier and fulfilled life. I won't lie - the journey to a happier life isn't an easy one. It takes awareness, effort, time and strong will. Providing personal (e.g. I changed schools 10+ times, lived in 7+ countries, divorced, cut toxic people out of my life) and other examples in each episode, I hope to motivate and empower you to start making sustainable life changes. Episodes will be released at least once a month (trying bi-weekly or more). I do encourage listeners to make it a two-way conversation i.e. suggest topics I could cover and ask questions if you need help on a particular issue, drop an email on ammarb87@gmail.com or DM my IG page: https://www.instagram.com/theageingmillennial_podcast/

In this episode I start to explore to what extent does culture shape you. Over the last few years when I finally became aware of well-being, I realised the extent to which Pakistani/Indian culture has shaped my traits and character in a negative way. Perhaps you've realised and agree, or you'll discover it today after listening to the episode?  Let me know your thoughts!

In the 20th episode (and Valentines special) of the podcast, I talk about how to start taking better decisions. It will greatly improve your overall well-being once you can decide YES or NO - there is NO middle-ground. The secret to success is consistency aka don't give up that easily once you decide to self-improve.

Many of us have this voice inside our heads that we usually hate (or sometimes love). In this episode, I introduce you to the Inner Critic (Voice) phenomena, what it may sound like and ways to start battling it. Giving power to the Inner Critic (Voice) can have detrimental impacts - take control of your mind as it's never too late.

ALL of us say things we didn't mean, which hurts the other person and/or paints a negative image of the other person. Unfortunately, we can't take our words back. This episode provides examples of the hurtful things we can say,  impact it has on children & adults (using my examples e.g. long nose) and ways to help think before speaking.

The Ageing Millennial is BACK after a solo trip to Uzbekistan. Over the last couple of months I got a lot of questions related to solo travel i.e. "Ammar, isn't solo travel boring?," "How do I go on the solo travel?," "Can you share stories from your solo travel experiences?" etc. In this episode, I share my solo travel experiences including Uzbekistan, Jordan and Scotland and impact it had on me.  Remember, solo travel is for EVERYONE - doesn't matter if you're single, married, 16 or 60 years old. A Solo trip doesn't mean venturing abroad, a weekend visit to another local city/town counts!

“Responsibility to yourself means refusing to let others do your thinking, talking, and naming for you; it means learning to respect and use your own brains and instincts; hence, grappling with hard work (Adrienne Rich)."In this episode I recommend '10 Ways To Start Taking Responsibility For Your Life' as well as explain what it means Taking Responsibility For Your Life. No one owes you anything and/or you're not The King so start taking responsibility/control for all aspects of your life (relationships, career, passions, etc).

This is the last episode in Season 1 - I will be back in a few weeks. Until then make sure you catch-up with the other episodes, subscribe, rate & review and share!

A different episode to the previous ones. In this I talk about using & replacing 3 Words to Improve & Transform Your Life - words I became aware about after listening to The Mindset Mentor (Rob Dial) and Louise Hay. I provide simple examples of replacing the negative words which is sure to make a HUGE difference to your communication, behavior and thoughts. In the end, we're all striving towards self care and a happier self so let's start with small & simple changes.

The words you should replace and swap with are:

HAVE --> Get To
SHOULD --> Could
BUT --> Though, However, Although, Instead, Nevertheless, Still, Yet

News: New Sleeper Bus launched in Hong Kong; Zayn Malik shockingly and sadly lashes out as his Partner's Mother-in-Law (Please don't hit your elders, not nice at all).

Perhaps I am being overly vulnerable in this episode and I’ll regret it later, however it's an important topic. I talk about normalising divorce (removing stigma and taboo) and how I coped with mine 2 years ago. It wasn't easy but I got through it via prioritising my well-being and support from my family & friends. I start by providing a brief overview of my 2 years of marriage, aftermath of the divorce i.e. what I had to put with and how I responded - this should help with coping in challenging situations - and why divorce isn't bad at all. This episode merely scratches the surface of divorce and I am sure to cover more in future episodes...

“When you let go of control and commit yourself to happiness, it is so easy to offer compassion and forgiveness. This propels you from the past, into the present. People that are negative, spend so much time trying to control situations and blame others for their problems. Committing yourself to staying positive is a daily mantra that states, “I have control over how I plan to react, feel, think and believe in the present. No one guides the tone of my life, except me! (Shannon L. Alder)."

This episode is all about 'how to spot, stop & fix controlling behaviour' which shows across all parts of life (e.g. relationships: parent-child, manager-direct reports, etc) and (Adele's new song).

In this episode of 'How to Spot & Stop Controlling Behaviour' I discuss:

  • What is Controlling Behaviour?
  • How to Spot Controlling Behaviour (using my personal experiences)?
  • Where does Controlling Behaviour come from?
  • Negative Impact Controlling Behaviour has on Yourself & Others
  • How to with Stop & Fix Controlling Behaviour for both parties?

I hope this episode motivates you to start fixing controlling issues in your life or making others aware of their controlling behaviour. It'd be happy to hear of your experiences - do drop me an email on: ammarb87@gmail.com.

Not to forget, this episode features Adele and a 38min war!

In this episode, I explore the role 'Expectations' plays in our lives. We're all humans and have expectations from family, relationships, work, education and so forth. When these expectations aren't met, we're left feeling disappointed, hurt, moody and tired of life which results in negative/toxic thinking and impacts all areas of our lives.

In this episode I talk about:

  • Official and My Definitions of Expectations
  • Multi-faceted view of Expectations
  • Ways to start having Low or No Expectations

Having Low or No Expectations will undoubtedly make you happier in the long run, in control of your feelings and taking responsibility for your life. Self Improvement and Self Care is a slow and gradual process, be patient.

When was the last time you audited your friendships i.e. who your friends are, is it a one sided friendship, are they toxic, if they're adding value to your life, making you feel good about yourself, not taking advantage of you, giving you the deserved respect, etc. In this episode, in honour of Friendship Day, I talk about:

  • Why Auditing Friendships is necessary?
  • Examples from my Personal Experiences
  • How to identify Toxic Friends?
  • How can you start Auditing Your Friendships?
  • What to Expect in the process?
  • Bonus segment: Amazon Reviews on Durex

Famous Quote by Oprah Winfrey:

I am hoping by the end you start identifying your real friends and take action to cut out the toxic ones who aren't serving your purpose. Though I do encourage this:  only cut people off if you've spoken to them multiple times and yet their behaviour hasn't changed. Life is too short to hang out with time-wasters, YOU deserve better.

Ray Lewis says “Before anything great is really achieved, your comfort zone must be disturbed.” The Ageing Millennial finally tackle the "Leaving Your Comfort Zone" concept in this episode covering:

  • What is the Comfort Zone?
  • (Personal) Examples of Leaving Your Comfort Zone (e.g. Internations event in Moscow)
  • How has it Helped?
  • Easy Steps to Start Leaving Your Comfort Zone
  • What to Expect in the Process

I am confident you'll gain the confidence to start taking baby steps towards leaving your comfort zone and eventually start living a happy and fulfilled life ready for all knowns and unknowns.

I finish the episode on a light-hearted note with an interesting fact on the ACTUAL purpose of rollercoasters.

It's time I share my experience of Being Authentic & Yourself along with a new addition towards the end of the episode. It takes a lot of energy and health to be someone else or in other words, FAKE.  We have to be real as well i.e. you can't be Yourself  ALL the time - there's no point of being honest (or straightforward) if it's going to hurt the other person. A balance is always required in both your personal and professional lives.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • The buzzwords i.e. 'Being Authentic' and 'Being Yourself'
  • Impact of NOT being Authentic & Yourself
  • Ways you CAN be Authentic & Yourself
  • Using Emotional Intelligence
  • NEW PART: Amazon Reviews

You do what's comfortable for YOU and remember, "there's only one of you, everyone else is taken (Oscar Wilde)." Stay Happy and Safe!

Let's face it, you've said 'I HATE MY JOB, I'M QUITTING' at least once in your life and begin your job search on and off. You let your boss/colleagues get to you, you're bored of the routine work, you're a coffee snob and don't get good coffee at your workplace, hate the toilets, hate the commute and so on. Well I can relate to you (though I did love the toilets in my last workplace) because I've been through similar experiences.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • The reasons for hating our jobs and the need to quit
  • How altering perceptions/thinking can make us start liking our jobs
  • The impact such situations can have on your mental health

Remember: Life is short and you won't be remembered for making complex excel sheets, beautifying slides or working until midnight every day unless you're the legend who made the  Fifa Video Game).

Baby Boomers/Millennials/Gen Z/Gen X/etc, do you feel - happy? excited? frustrated? anxious? sick of life? stuck in a rut? sad? depressed? Regardless of the answer, this episode is for YOU. I talk about wellbeing, how my understanding of the concept has evolved, debunking myths that need to feel happy 24/7, your inner voice, tips to achieving genuine wellbeing and happiness (stemming from my personal experience) and how to get back up after a relapse.

Let's make it a two-way conversation - I'd be interested to hear your views on wellbeing, what rituals do you practice to maintain it and how successful have you been?

Therapy continues to have a bad reputation in the 21st century (even amongst the millennials) - people requiring Therapy are viewed as weak, hopeless, messed up and the list goes on. Furthermore, people in Therapy expect to be fixed magically, repair their marriages, "find" themselves and have their personalities completely transformed. In this episode I aim to honestly critique Therapy based on my own experience of 2 years - the good and bad.

If you're thinking of getting therapy, hope this episode helps you in making a decision. If you are/were in Therapy I'd be interested to hear if you can relate to my experience and how it's helped you.

I’m sure, at least once in your life, you got judged for doing things solo/alone e.g. eating, drinking, watching a movie, travelling, etc. Well, I experienced the same - I believed doing things alone meant you have no friends or aren’t popular.

This episode explores the art of doing things solo/alone and what makes it so liberating. The best choice I made was doing activities/things without waiting on others.

Divided the episode into two parts to manage the time - this is the last part!!

What do you enjoy doing alone?
