After taking the summer off, Alex is back for some more Ottawa Senators content. And today, there is plenty of things to talk about. To help him, Graeme Nichols makes his return to the podcast! Graeme has been on the show multiple times before. Today, the two discuss the 2024-25 Ottawa Senators and their season outlook.
They hit on every topic imaginable, starting with how important it is for this team to finally get off to a hot start. Highlighting what has been their weakness in seasons past, they then switch to what new addition Linus Ullmark will bring in net. The two also discuss how new head coach Travis Green might use his forwards, and why they think the defence pairs might be the most unsurprising part of the whole team.
Finally, the guys talk about some players they want to see have a good year, including Thomas Chabot, and end the podcast with a macro discussion on the team's ownership and front office, and how it has changed since Andlauer has bought the team.
Alex is back with another episode! Today, he is joined by Charlie Arsenault of Game Over: Ottawa. Together, the two break down the Ottawa Senators offseason and everything that has come with it. Timestamps for the episode are below! They start with the Linus Ullmark trade, and what may be the best move the Senators have made in a while. From there, they switch to the Free Agency part of the Ottawa Senators offseason. Talking about how there is a clear vision for the team, but it is the right vision?
Ullmark Trade: 1:40
Chychrun Trade: 13:00
Perron Signing: 19:30
Amadio Signing: 26:00
Joseph Trade: 33:00
Pinto Signing: 41:00
Alex is back with another Last Word on Sens podcast! Today, Jamie McLennan makes his return to the podcast! The two talk about a range of topics. Including the biggest news of the week, Travis Green hired to be the next head coach of the Ottawa Senators! McLennan, who has been a long-time friend of Green, breaks down what he expects the new coach to bring to Ottawa's bench and why it may be a successful hire for the team.
After that, they shift to the offseason outlook and what this roster needs to look like next season. Talking about how adding to the depth of the team is a must-have after this offseason is finished. Before finally switching to the goaltending. With McLennan being a former NHL goalie himself, he has a unique perspective on just what went wrong this season.
Alex is back with some more Ottawa Senators related content. Today, Kevin Lee makes his yearly return to the podcast for the yearly edition of Ottawa Senators Season player grades! The two have been doing this for three years now. It is a simple concept, taking each player and giving them a letter grade.
This is based off of expectations heading into the year, results vs those expectations, and the overall feeling of the season. Alex and Kevin break down each player on the Sens roster, and a common theme starts to emerge. Despite what can only be described as a disappointing year, a lot of the player groups have relatively good grades. However, that all changes when they get to the goaltending. On top of talking about the season, the guys look forward to what may be needed this offseason. Can they keep one goalie the same? What about both? All of this is discussed, and more!
Alex is back with an extended episode this week! Today, Gabriel Foley joins him to break down the 2024 NHL Playoffs. The guys go series by series and give their thoughts on all 16 teams and what may have them succeed or fail in this playoff push. Breaking down the goaltending, defence, and forwards and trying to pinpoint what they key matchups of each series may be.
Alex and Gabe start with the Eastern Conference, in what they feel may be a lacklustre Metro division. However, the Atlantic Division playoff matchups are shaping up to be very good. From there, they bounce to the Western Conference. Looking at the four teams that are not confirmed matchups yet, although all of them will be apart of the 2024 NHL Playoffs. They then end with the two matchups that are set in the West. Finally, both the guys give their Stanley Cup pick.
Alex is back with a second episode this week! Today, he is joined by Brandon Plant of SENS TALK. Together, the two take a look at the Ottawa Senators final stretch of the season. Breaking down Ottawa's recent games, and some of the new players they have brought into the team. However, they take a much larger view overall of the season and what needs to change heading into the upcoming offseason.
Focusing on goalies first, and just how much they have hurt the team. Then switching their focus to what to do with the roster this offseason. Some big moves need to be made, and what should they do to re-shape the roster? Alex mentions how depth needs to be a priority, and the team should move away from bug name hunting.
Alex is back with another episode and today, Hunter Hodies makes his return to the podcast! Together, the two discuss the race for NHL Playoffs and the final wild-card spot. Hunter covers the Pittsburgh Penguins so the two start there, with a discussion about what has led to this incredible season turnaround from Pittsburgh.
They also discuss if having the tougher schedule could actually be viewed as an advantage for teams that are pushing for the playoffs. After that, they shift to the other teams in the hunt for the playoffs and discuss who they would like to see the most. Finally, they wrap it up with a discussion about if it would be better to play the Carolina Hurricanes or the New York Rangers in the first round.
Alex is back with another episode, and the second of this week! After reviewing the Ottawa Senators deadline specifically, he turns to the NHL Trade Deadline as a whole and breaks down every single move. This content used to be on the MnM Hockey Podcast, which is currently on a break. So, Alex is talking both Sens and NHL here for the time being!
Starting in the Eastern Conference, it felt like the teams out East did a lot less big swinging than their counterparts in the West. Alex names a few teams in the Atlantic that went for small upgrades over spending large amounts. While also looking at one Metro team that did make some bigger moves.
He then changed to the Western Conference where a handful of teams decided to get better. Maybe the most notorious of all is Vegas, which once again seems to be up to some salary cap manipulation. Alex gives his thoughts on what they are doing and why teams shouldn't be angry.
Alex is back with another episode of the Last Word on Sens Podcast! After a very tough stretch of games, there was lots of intrigue surrounding the Ottawa Senators NHL Trade deadline. However, the week itself ended up being very quiet for the team. What does that mean for the Sens? To break this down, Brandon Piller makes his return to the podcast!
Together, the guys talk about the lack of action from the Senators this week and whether they were surprised, disappointed, or OK with that. They also discuss what the long-term outlook of the team is and what they should be looking for as the year continues to roll on.
Next, they look at a waiver claim the team made, as well as one that the team decided not to make and give their thoughts on the impact of that. Before finally diving into the Vladimir Tarasenko trade and its return. Discussing the highs and lows of emotion when seeing the trade and the initial return. Before talking through the thought process as to what led to such a disappointing return.
Alex is back and going solo this week. Since recording before the Allstar break, lots has taken place. Today, Alex looks at the recent stretch of Ottawa Senators play and whether or not is an actual improvement. Leaning on the article that was published this week.
From there, he talks about how inconsistent this team continues to be and why that is costing them games. From the goaltending to the defence, this team doesn't seem capable of keeping it together at times. Alex also gives his thoughts on the Morgan Rielly and Ridly Greig situation from the other week, mentioning he feels it may have been over-covered.
Finally, he takes a quick look at some potential NHL Trade Deadline pieces for Ottawa. And makes a take for why this recent good stretch should make Staios and crew more willing to sell off pieces, not less.
Alex is back with another episode of the Last Word on Sens Podcast! Today, Jacob Billington joins him as the two have lots to discuss. They start by discussing the recent run of play from this Ottawa Senators team and why it has resulted in more points. From there, they discuss how they may attack the NHL Trade Deadline and what the most important thing for this team is going forward.
They break down where they see names such as Vladimir Tarasenko, Joshua Norris, and Thomas Chabot fitting into the roster long-term. As well as breaking down the early returns of Shane Pinto and what he has brought to the team. They wrap things up by examining what has led to this team underperforming again and what a new management and ownership group can do to help prevent it from happening going forward.
Alex is back after a break for the Holidays. And today, Nate of SilverSeven is making his return to the podcast! The two have a very busy episode with lots to discuss. They start by taking a look at how this team has played since their coaching change was made. It is a pretty bleak outlook overall right now, but the guys break down exactly what the issues are.
From there, they highlight what the team needs to do in the offseason with the Ottawa Senators roster and why this offseason needs to be different from years past. Alex also advocates for giving Ridly Greig more icetime as this season goes on to see what impact he can make.
Finally, they switch to a discussion about the Senators goaltending, which has become a lightning rod topic on Sens Twitter. Who is to blame? And what can done to help fix it?
Alex is back with another edition of the Last Word on Sens Podcast and it is a very busy week. Today, Spencer Blake makes his return to the podcast. And they start with nothing other than the fact that DJ Smith is no longer the Head Coach of the Ottawa Senators. With DJ Smith Fired, the guys break down why it was more than time to make the move. As well as where they want to see the team go from this point on.
Discussing all aspects of their game, from the backcheck to the rush chances they create and more. From there, they look at how the goaltending has been doing this season and give their feelings on the debate that has been going around social media. Finally, they wrap the episode up with a Holiday-style wishlist for things they want to see from the Ottawa Senators in 2024.
Alex is back with another episode of the Last Word on Sens podcast! Today, he is going solo as there is a lot he needs to get off of his chest. Fresh off of another underwhelming performance on Tuesday night, Alex goes in on the team for their lack of attention to detail, as well as the complete lack of accountability from their Head Coach.
Examining why this team would be better suited under new leadership behind the bench, Alex explains why he feels they are getting dangerously close to a point of no return for the season. From there, he shifts to look at the David Perron incident and suspension that followed. Breaking down why it needs to be such a long suspension and despite his lack of history, why it should be upheld by the league. Finally, he touches on the comments from the Red Wings Head Coach and what fans should take away from it.
Alex is back with another podcast! After a very heated one last time, he is back with a much better week from Ottawa. Joining him, Tyler Ray makes his return to the podcast! Together, the two start by taking a look at an absolutely crazy game to kick of the Ottawa Senators Sweden trip. The Sens blew a 4-0 lead but rebounded with an overtime win from an insane Tim Stutzle goal.
From there, they look at how the mood has changed over the last week with the team now that they have won a couple of games. Alex and Tyler discuss getting healthy on the blueline and how critical select players are. After, they discuss Brady and Giroux's comments and how they have performed after they were made.
They wrap the podcast up by discussing the goaltender situation and what to expect going forward with the tandem.
It has been a very busy week for the Ottawa Senators. Today, Alex goes solo to break it all down. He has some stuff to get off of his chest. Which includes the Dadonov punishment and situation, Pierre Dorion's job as a General Manager, Andlauer's press conference and more.
However, the main focus point includes Brady Tkachuk and Claude Giroux commenting on the fans and DJ Smith. Alex can not believe what he heard and highlights exactly why the fans demanding change are doing everything but turning their back on the team and franchise. A rare mistake from the Sens captain leaves a lot to talk about in this episode of the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Alex is back with another podcast. It has been quite the week for the Ottawa Senators so far. The Ottawa Senators injuries are starting to mount as Alex finds out live while recording that Thomas Chabot will be out 4-6 weeks after blocking a shot. Matt Bosty joins Alex as the two discuss the three-game losing streak the team is currently on and what is going wrong.
They also discuss the injuries the team is facing on defence and why some inconsistency from key forwards is hurting this team so far this season. Finally, the guys discuss a wild Shane Pinto suspension that occurred this week and what it means for him, the team, and the league moving forward in today's betting landscape.
They finish the podcast off looking at how great of a start Jakob Chychrun has had with the team and why that is vital right now and moving forward with the Chabot news.
Alex is back and so is the NHL! After a long summer of waiting, the NHL Regular season is back. And with it, comes Ottawa Senators hockey. Alex is solo this episode as he reviews what has taken place over the Sens first three games of the season. Reviewing the Ottawa Senators results so far and analyzing exactly what he saw. Including some plays that he liked as well as some ones that he disliked.
Alex reviews the opening weekend for the Ottawa Senators and how it was a massive success for the team. It went as well as anyone could have asked for, both on and off of the ice. The new ownership continues to do a great job rebuilding the relationship with this fanbase and Alex believes it will lead to some much-needed buy-in very quickly. Finally, Alex also speaks about what is happening with Shane Pinto and Joshua Norris.
Alex is back with another exciting episode. Today, he is joined by Steve on Sens! The two break down a range of topics, that starts with the new official ownership of the Ottawa Senators. Talking about the welcome to the team that was given to Michael Andlauer as well as what he has done so far in his early tenure as owner of the Ottawa Senators.
From there, they switch to some Ottawa Senators roster talk. Alex and Steve break down what the forwards, defence, and goaltending might look like this season. They break down who may be traded to make room for Shane Pinto and his contract that still needs to be signed. The guys also speak to what the defence core might look like this season. Finally, they examine the goaltending situation and take their best guess on what the split may look like in the net.
Alex is finally back after a very long summer break and is ready to talk all things Ottawa Senators! In today's episode, he goes solo and breaks down everything that has occurred during the Ottawa Senators offseason. The most important being the team is under new ownership! Alex highlights what it means and gives some brief thoughts on the sale.
From there, he starts to look at the roster moves that were made. Alex DeBrincat is out, how does that affect the original trade the team made for him? Vladimir Tarasenko and Joonas Korpisalo are now in. Alex gives his thoughts on both players and their respective deals. Finally, the biggest news of the week was Jake Sanderson signing a new deal that keeps him in Ottawa for an additional eight seasons. Alex gives his thoughts on that as well the general reaction that took place on social media. All of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Despite an exciting week of playoff hockey starting, Alex is back with another Last Word on Senators Podcast! Today, Kevin Lee joins him for their third annual Ottawa Senators roster grades. In this episode, Alex and Kevin go through each player on the Sens team and give them an overall grade for this season.
This leads to a bunch of great discussions about expectations vs reality and what the two expect from each player next year. They start out hot, giving some high praise to top Sens forwards. However, as they work their way down the lineup, their grades start to drop. Finally, they evaluate coaching and the General Managers, discussing whether or not they would bring either back under new ownership. Find all of this with the Last Word on Senators podcast!
Alex is back with another week of content as it has been a busy time for the Ottawa Senators. Unfortunately, it looks like Ottawa's season will be coming to end after their next four games. However, it has been an exciting time nonetheless. Alex goes over what has happened the past two weeks to lead to this. He starts by looking at the goaltending that has taken place and the crazy carousel that has gone on. Who should Ottawa start the rest of the year? As well, who will be in the net next season? These are all questions Alex tries to ask.
From there, he looks at some Ottawa Senators injuries that occurred which helped Tyler Kleven find his way into the lineup! Alex talks the impact of those injuries but also how surprised he has been by Kleven. Additionally, how Erik Brannstrom has looked since getting more icetime and what to do with him going forward. Tune in for all of this and more!
Alex is back with another edition of the Last Word on Sens Podcast. Today, he takes a look at the recent Ottawa Senators results. Unlike the last podcast, where it was almost all positive to discuss, today isn't quite the same tone. Since the last recording, Ottawa has dropped five in a row and six of their last seven games.
To help him break down everything that has taken place since the trade deadline, Alex is joined by Nick Dumoulin! To start, they discuss some tough blowouts to frankly bad teams and what the team needed to take away from those games. They also touch on multiple aspects of the team which seem to come back to one thing, coaching. Is it time for DJ Smith to exit as coach of the Senators? Alex and Nick discuss the pros and cons of making a coaching change after this season is over, and whether injuries should be enough to save Smith's job. They also take a look ahead to what can be described as the toughest schedule remaining in the NHL.
Alex is back with another busy week of content! The Trade Deadline was one of the craziest we have seen in years. The Ottawa Senators were no small part of that. On Wednesday, they pulled off a massive move bringing in the top defenceman on the market. However, more moves had to take place leading up to that. To help break down everything with the Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline, Graeme Nichols makes his return to the podcast!
Together, Graeme and Alex analyze each trade the Senators made and what they think the impact will be going forward. Additionally, they discuss how nice it is that the Sens are back in a legitimate playoff race, even if they are not the favourites. They break down what they want to see this year, and into the summer to really put the team over the edge. Finally, they discuss what they would like to see in net going forward, with two interesting options being available.
Alex is back with yet another episode and there is a ton to discuss since the last time he recorded! There have been six games since the last time Alex published an episode. In those six games, the Senators have gone 3-2-1 with some mixed results against mixed opponents. However, with so much to break down, it wouldn't be right to do this episode solo. Which is why Jack Richardson is making his return to the podcast!
Together, the guys start by discussing the Sens recent play and some macro-level feelings they have about the team. From there, they switch to the Anton Forsberg injury and what that means for the outlook of the team. Specifically, as it relates to the Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline. Discussing all the options not only in goal, but also for the rest of the roster. Do they think Ottawa will bring in a new piece? And what about the Colton Parayko rumours? They touch on all of this along with the Tyler Motte move which already took place.
Alex is back with another loaded podcast! Since he last recorded, the Senators have had a mixed bag of results. They dropped the game he and Hunter Hodies spoke about, as well the next one as well. However, they have since won four in a row and entered the All-Star break on a high note! To break down everything that has taken place over the last two weeks, Beata returns to the podcast!
She and Alex talk about some unfortunate Ottawa Senators injuries to Joshua Norris and Cam Talbot. Was the Norris injury handled correctly? Should a different approach have been taken? They also discuss whether or not the Sens could and should look to move away from Talbot at the deadline. Finally, they talk about the All-Star game and what can be done differently to try and make it a more marquee event. Currently, it is something both players and fans seem to want to actively avoid. However, it doesn't have to be like that.
Tune in for all of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens podcast!
Alex is back with another episode after the Ottawa Senators took Game 1 of the Pittsburgh Penguins Home vs Home series! It was a thrilling game, which he discussed on the LockedOn Penguins podcast. Now, the host of that podcast Hunter Hodies joins Alex on the Last Word on Sens podcast to discuss the Sens, Pens and more.
The guys compare the two teams' season and how similar they actually are. Examining the lack of depth and that at times goaltending has hurt them, although for two different reasons. As well as injuries being key factors in tougher seasons than both fanbases were hoping for. Hunter also talks about what it is like watching Claude Giroux on another team, as well as who and what surprised him while watching Ottawa play. Did anyone catch him off-guard as an outsider watching the team for the first time this season? Tune in to find out!
Alex is back for another week of Ottawa Senators content! Today, he has Tyler Ray making his return to the podcast. Together, the two look at the last three games of the Sens season (recorded before the Saturday night debacle). Highlighting what they liked, disliked, and overall trends of the team.
From there, the two discuss the Matt Dumba trade rumours that are starting to circulate and discuss why it likely wouldn't be a good idea for Ottawa on multiple levels. Finally, they end the podcast by looking at some mid-season Ottawa Senators season awards. Starting with best forward and best defenceman, both Alex and Tyler highlight their case for who has been the best. After that, they switch to team MVP, best rookie, and most surprising player.
Getting to hit on all of these categories really highlights how many different players there are to discuss on this Sens team. As well as why it is frustrating they're not higher in the standings.
Alex is back after taking a month off due to Holidays and being very busy with life. However, the Ottawa Senators have continued to produce lots to talk about. Today, he is back with a solo episode discussing everything he has missed since his last episode. Starting with the exciting Arytom Zub extension!
Alex dives into what it means for the player and team and what Ottawa needs to add around him and the rest of the blueline going forward. From there, he examines their last stretch of games in an up-and-down December for the Sens. Finally, he switches gears to the 2023 Ottawa Senators. What is expected? What is needed?
Trying to look at it in five-game increments, Alex decides he would like to see Ottawa take at least seven points in the next five games. This is needed if they want to catch the four or five teams they are trailing for the second wild-card spot.
Alex is back after a week off of the podcast. Today, he has Jack Richardson making his return to the Last Word on Sens Podcast! Alex and Jack look over multiple Ottawa Senators issues, including the defence and lack of critical offence. Exploring why a 3-4-0 record just won't cut it as well as why it is frustrating they have been this poor. Both guys agree this team has shown potential for so much more, including on their latest road trip.
However, at the end of the day the consistency just hasn't been there. They then switch their focus to how the Sens may handle the goalie situation with 12 games in their next 21 days. The workload will undoubtedly be split between the two of them. Finally, they talk about Alex Formenton and why he doesn't have a contract. As well as why it is important to remember the investigation that is ongoing.
Alex is back with another week of Senators games in the book. Unfortunately, things still aren't very happy in Sens land. They finally snapped a long losing streak, only to lose once again. Alex highlights some issues with the roster currently and what Ottawa needs to do to fix it.
From there, Alicia Scodeller joins the podcast as the two talk about a bunch of topics. These topics include Thomas Chabot and his ice time and now concussion. How does the defence core survive without him? Plus, should DJ Smith's job be on the line? This team has been sputtering for a third straight year, will the coach be the one to blame? They also discuss Daniel Alfredsson going into the Hockey Hall of Fame and what it means for Sens fans.
Alex is back after a very tough stretch for the Ottawa Senators. When he last recorded, they were fresh off of winning four of five at home and things felt good in Senators' land. However, an 0-5 stretch has things absolutely down the drain. How bad is it? They are already seven points out of a playoff spot and it is only November. Any further and the team is in serious trouble of yet another fully lost season with nothing but a few "feel good" stories at the end. Something everyone admitted wasn't acceptable.
Alex goes through the five-game stretch and dissects what he liked and disliked. From there, he switches to the massive news of the week. The team is for sale! With the Ottawa Senators for sale come multiple questions. It is already clear they intend to stay in Ottawa, but who will buy them? Ryan Reynolds has been in the media lately saying he would love it, and Alex discusses that option. Finally, Alex gives his thoughts on the announcement that Chris Neil will have his jersey retired.
The Ottawa Senators season is finally back! With that, Alex takes a look at the first seven games that have been played. Diving into trends, what happened, and where the team goes from here. To help him, Spencer Blake joins the podcast! Spencer is a previous guest and the two get straight to work.
They highlight the anxiety some of the fan base may have had when the team started 0-2. With shades of years past, where it took over 13 games to hit five wins, fans were a little worried this may be the same. However, Ottawa rattled off four wins in a row on an epic homestand to start their season right.
Join Alex and Spencer as they highlight some unfortunate injuries for the Senators, how they want to see those replaced, and what they have thought of each line, pairing, and player during this Ottawa Senators season so far.
Alex is back for another episode! Today is his final episode before the 2022-23 Ottawa Senators season gets underway. To help him preview everything, friend of the podcast Derek Lee makes his return. Derek hasn't been on the podcasts since the start of last season, so the two discuss how different of a feeling it is entering this year.
Last year, the Sens were coming off of a disappointing offseason which soon translated into a brutal start. However, this year has been the exact opposite. Obviously, the results are undetermined so far, but the offseason has been nothing but positive. The guys look at the forwards, defence, and goaltending. Giving their opinion on all three of them and highlighting what they are excited about, as well as what they are worried about.
Overall, the guys agree that they are very excited about this season. Something that truthfully hasn't been the case for the past few years. Stay with the Last Word on Sens podcast all year for analysis and opinions!
Alex is back with another episode before the season starts. Today, he takes a look at the Tyler Motte contract and gives his opinions on the player and what it means for the team. Usually, he would have a guest with him to help break down the signing and give their opinion as well. But today, Alex is going solo. In a much shorter episode than usual, Alex felt it was important to post something but couldn't find anyone last minute.
After the Motte deal, Alex switches his focus to two professional tryouts that Ottawa signed. Those are Derick Brassard and Michael Dal Colle. Jumping into why PTOs are a good call for any team, Alex examines both player's career paths. Obviously, Sens fans know Brassard very well. However, some may not know just how weird of a career he has had since leaving Ottawa in 2018. Alex looks at where both players come from and what their role may be if they were to join the Sens on an actual contract this season.
Alex is back with another episode of the Last Word on Sens podcast. With a relatively quiet August, he took most of the month off. However, there has been some massive news lately and the podcast is back! Making his return to the podcast to assist Alex is Steve on Sens. Today, the two start by looking at the Tim Stutzle contract and why it is crucial to the Sens rebuild. Both Alex and Steve give their takes on why they like the deal, along with any potential risk it may include.
From there, they also look at the Erik Brannstrom deal and explain why this may actually seal his time as an Ottawa Senator. What do they want to see from Brannstrom and his usage this year? Is there anything that can save his time in Ottawa? Finally, they ask the question of is this defence core good enough as is. The two dive into that topic, looking at how this core could be used this season.
Alex is back with another incredibly busy week of action! Today, he will be looking at the Ottawa Senators Offseason. Pierre Dorion has been on a mission this summer, and the moves have been plentiful. Joining him to break it all down is Silver Seven writer, Trevor Shackles! Trevor has joined Alex twice before and today, the guys have a ton to talk about.
They start with the first piece that happened since the last podcast. And that would be Ottawa acquiring Cam Talbot in net. They discuss what it means for Ottawa's goalie situation both now and going forward. From there, they take a look at two massive signings in Claude Giroux and Joshua Norris. The guys discuss whether or not Giroux is the biggest free agent signing the Sens have ever had. As well, they also talk about the risk that comes with a Norris signing.
Finally, the guys switch their attention to what kind of deals they want to see for remaining RFA's in Ottawa. As well as how they want to see the right side of the defence upgraded upon.
Alex is finally back after two months off of watching the playoffs unfold. Today, he has a ton of news to break down. And to help him do it, Managing Editor of Silver Seven, Nate joins him! This is Nate's second time on the podcast and the two get started right away by looking at the Colin White buyout. Was it the right move? As well, what does it mean for both sides? From there, they look at the Alex DeBrincat trade that Pierre Dorion pulled off. Both Alex and Nate love this deal, and even the "worst-case" scenario would be a win for Ottawa.
They quickly discuss a Joshua Norris extension and the rest of the draft before diving into the Matt Murray trade. They have to speculate on it at first, but the trade actually does drop near the end of the episode and you get their live reactions. Finally, they discuss what they would like to see in free agency.
Episode 43 of the Last Word on Senators Podcast is here! Today, Alex has the one and only Jamie McLennan join him to discuss the Ottawa Senators roster, season, and offseason coming up. First, Alex discusses the Pierre McGuire firing that happened this week. A pretty surprising piece of news from the Senators, Alex looks at McGuire's time here and why the Sens made the right choice fixing a mistake instead of compounding a sunk cost.
With McLennan, Alex gets into players seasons such as Shane Pinto, Connor Brown, Tim Stutzle, and more. Looking at who or what the team can add alongside those guys to make this roster a competing one next year. Additionally, they look at the goaltending situation and what to expect from Anton Forsberg next season. With Matt Murray and his health a question, will the Sens use a three-goalie rotation? All of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
After a long break, Alex is finally back! The season has finally come to an end, and although the Ottawa Senators season didn't go quite as some hoped or expected, it still left lots to talk about. Today, Alex is joined once again by Kevin Lee! The two will give their Ottawa Senator season grades. Going through each player, and describing their season vs expectations and how they did.
Much like last season, Kevin based his grades on what the players did vs his own expectations heading into the season. Alex tries to balance that and the actual output of the player. For example, they discuss if and how Colin White should be affected by his contract. As well, does someone like Matt Murray who now has a history of injuries, get docked for not staying healthy? Finally, the two also take a look at coaching and management and discuss why it's not a good thing the narrative is almost the exact same as the last offseason.
Alex is back after a busy weekend with the NHL Trade Deadline. Last week, he previewed the Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline. Looking at what to expect and what moves they might make. Including a big move from another Canadian team. However, they didn't get the correct defenceman. This week, Brandon Piller makes his return to the podcast! The two look at each trade that the Senators made this deadline.
This includes Travis Hamonic and trading away fan favourite Nick Paul. As well as discussing what the return for each trade brings to the team. After that, they discuss what they want to see this season as the last 20 games are once again relatively meaningless. Finally, they have a discussion about the future of the Ottawa Senators goaltending and what they thought of the Anton Forsberg contract. Is it good? Too much? Alex thinks it might be shades of past contracts the team has signed that have not worked out very well. Tune in for all of that and more!
Alex is back after his solo stint last week! This time, he has Matt Bosty making his return to the podcast! Matt is making his fourth appearance and as always, the mood becomes a lot lighter when he joins. The two preview the Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline together. Examining who may be moved, who they would move, and what fans should expect leading up to Monday afternoon.
They also discuss some trade proposals which include Matt proposing a very interesting trade idea between Ottawa and another Canadian team. Other than just trade deadline talk, the guys also discuss the frustration of the fanbase after a very long season that was supposed to be better. Another topic of interest becomes what do you do with goaltending going forward? Anton Forsberg seems to be here for the year, but can you even trust Matt Murray going forward?
Alex is back to recap a busy week of Ottawa Senators hockey. Today, he is trying something new. For the first time ever he is doing the episode without a guest. Alex goes solo and gives his opinions on the Ottawa Senators record and their recent play. Highlighting why he believes the team still has quite a ways to go if they truly want to be contenders. Since the last recording, Ottawa lost five in a row, including losing to two of the worst teams in the league. However, they finished a miserable road trip with a convincing win.
From there, Alex looks at the return of Colin White and how he has had a great start to his season. As well as the need to remove Nikita Zaitsev from the lineup. Overall, Alex looks forward to the deadline and what he wants the Sens to do. A guest will return for the next episode, but for now, enjoy the rants!
Welcome back to the Last Word on Sens podcast. This week, Alex has Graeme Nichols making his return to the podcast! Today, the two discuss the last two weeks of games from the Senators and ask the question can you be taking moral victories at this point in the rebuild? From there, they discuss what this Ottawa Senators roster may look like with everyone healthy again and what summer additions could be made to really improve the team.
They also speak on Matt Murray and his recent play plus the fact that he can't stay healthy. This leads to a discussion of what to do with Anton Forsberg because Filip Gustavsson needs to start too. All of that heads towards a larger deadline discussion on who might get sold and the fact that this should be the last season as deadline sellers. Alex and Graeme debate between Erik Brannstrom and his future with the Ottawa Senators as well.
Alex is back after the All-Star break and with two weeks in the books, there is lots to talk about. To break everything down, Jack Richardson of the Future Sickos Podcast joins him. The two begin with highlighting some key injuries since the last recording which includes Drake Batherson and Joshua Norris. Going over the losses, they look at how it impacts the team's depth but also how the Senators have actually fought through it nicely.
Alex and Jack also discuss how the Ottawa Senators season is a weird one because it feels like a "lost" season, but there is still obvious improvement made. This is unlike past seasons where a top draft pick is what is needed. Instead, you want to see actual growth from the team that gives confidence going forward. Finally, they have a long discussion on the Senators' defensive pairs, a very common topic lately. Is there a way to move on from Nikita Zaitsev this year and what would it cost to do so?
Alex is back with games to talk about as the Senators are finally playing again! With six games played since he last recorded, there is lots to take a look at as 2022 is now well underway. To do this, Owen Welch of Silver Seven Sens joins him! Together, the guys take a look at the Ottawa Senators Defence, depth, and decisions to make going forward.
Starting with the defence, Alex can't get over just how good Erik Brannstrom looks. Unfortunately, he is on COVID protocol now but they discuss what his absence means and if he has a spot when he is back. From there, they also discuss the depth of the Sens and if they should add a Tyler Toffoli type player this season. Does it make sense to spend assets now or should they wait and target a list of players Owen has circled the free agency? One thing they agree on, is that depth is something that will need to be changed going forward.
Alex is back after nearly two months off of the podcast, largely due to the Ottawa Senators lack of games played. However, with the extended break, it leaves a lot to talk about this week! To break everything down, Spencer Blake makes his return to the podcast. Spencer helps cover the Belleville Senators for SilverSevenSens as well as the Sens.
The guys start by talking about the Ottawa Senators schedule and all that COVID has ruined, including Jake Sanderson and others World Jr tournament. However, not all is lost as Sanderson has now accepted an invitation to the USA Olympic team. The guys discuss his development as well as Tyler Boucher and his move away from College. They also discuss Filip Gustavsson being sent down to the AHL and why it actually might be a good thing for him at this point in time.
Alex is back after a two-week break. Since the last episode, there is plenty to talk about. Including the Ottawa Senators being shut down for a full week thanks to a COVID outbreak. To help him break all the news down is Steve on Sens. Together, the two start by looking at what this break means and should it have happened sooner? Then, they switch to the Ottawa Senators roster as a whole and how this season has already become a bit of a throwaway season. Diving into what they want to see going forward and why this year needs to be a learning year for management.
The guys also take a look at the last eight Sens games in which they went 1-6-1, an absolutely terrible stretch of hockey. It wasn't just COVID that impacted things, it's the team as a whole. Regardless, they also discuss what they liked out of certain rookie players and has someone like Lassi Thomson done enough to stay full time?
Alex is back after a busy week for the Ottawa Senators. Today, he is trying something new. To start, he goes solo which is something he doesn't usually do. Alex breaks down the last four games from the Senators and trends he saw plus what he did and didn't like. Going game-by-game and recapping plus analyzing it. After 30 minutes of that, he then switches to preview mode. He first discusses the Chicago Blackhawks game. For his thoughts on the off-ice issues, you can listen to them on the MnM Hockey Podcast.
Finally, to wrap up the podcast he has Thomas Williams on for an Ottawa Senators vs Minnesota Wild preview. He and Thomas look through this very new Wild team and what to expect from them. Players to keep an eye on that aren't as known as well as the big names such as Kirill Kaprizov. They break down every aspect of the two teams heading into Tuesday's matchup.
Alex is back as the season gets underway and this week, he has a ton to talk about! To help discuss all these items, making his return to the podcast is Brandon Plant from SENS TALK. Together, the two start with taking a look at the Brady Tkachuk contract and what it means for the team, fans, and organization as a whole. They discuss why it is a fair deal despite the lack of production on the score sheet. As well as how they see Tkachuk growing as a player.
From there, they switch to look at storylines from the first three games of the season. Including their two games against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Breaking down what they liked and didn't like coming out of each game. Some key takeaways to start the year were the depth and the goaltending. Finally, they discuss the goaltending situation and what Matt Murray may bring on his return to the team.
Alex is back after a month off as the news cycle slowed down significantly. Today, he takes a look at the 2021-22 Ottawa Senators in a full season preview. Joining him in breaking down the season is Tyler Ray, making his return to the podcast. To start, they take a look at Brady Tkachuk and why he doesn't have a contract yet. What do each of them expect and when will it happen?
From there, they look at the Colin White injury and why Ottawa might be thin down the middle this year. The two also discuss what it means that Tyler Ennis has officially signed a contract. Ennis was on a professional tryout all throughout camp. Tyler and Alex go through the forwards and defence, discussing what they expect from each and the season expectations as a whole. Tune in for all of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Welcome back to the Last Word on Sens podcast. Today, Alex has some of the biggest news of the Ottawa Senators' summer to look at. Drake Batherson and Pierre Dorion have signed new contracts since the last podcast was released. Both of these are huge news for the organization's future. To help break everything down, Derek Lee makes his return to the podcast.
Together, the guys look at how the Batherson deal may affect Brady Tkachuk, if at all. They also discuss how good of a job Dorion has done so far and what is in store for the future of this team. Looking at things such as the lack of moves in free agency this year, what does the blueline look like going forward and should Ottawa trade Erik Brannstrom and Logan Brown right now? Tune in for all of that and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Alex is back in the dog days of summer for the NHL season. However, there is always plenty to discuss when Matt Bosty joins the podcast. Today, the guys take a look at the Sens offseason so far and touch on what they see from some of the lesser talked about RFA's. They also dive into the crazy NHL offseason from different teams throughout the league and why it may be a good thing Ottawa has done very little.
From there, they take a look at what the defence, forwards, and goaltending may look like for the 2021-22 Ottawa Senators roster. How do they see different pieces fitting and is there something still to come? Finally, they discuss ads coming to NHL jerseys and does it mean anything? As well as the report that the Senators sound like they will be requiring proof of double vaccination to enter Sens games this season. Tune in for all of this and more with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Alex is back after a few weeks off and he has lots to talk about. Since the last episode, there has been plenty of action. Including the Ottawa Senators Draft class of 2021 and free agency! To help him break it all down, he has Ross Levitan joining him. Together, they start with the Ottawa Senators Draft. Examining the picks made and also diving into the idea of Ottawa constantly reaching on picks.

Looking at the return and what it means for both sides in the deal. Alex is back with another podcast and today he has Graeme Nichols returning. Graeme was last one before the Sens season began to preview what it would look like. Now, the two take a look at the Ottawa Senators Offseason. They begin by looking at the expansion draft and who Ottawa may lose. Little did they know that those picks would all be reported before the draft even happened.
However, they move on to looking at free agency and exactly what this summer has in store. An interesting debate arises about how to build the team and how to balance going for it and not blocking prospects. From there, they also discuss what Ottawa's possible draft possibilities are. As well as discussing why this could be one of the more open drafts we have seen in quite some time. Finally, they both give their thoughts on the Pierre McGuire hire and where the Sens front office is going.
Alex is back after a few weeks off to enjoy the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. With those wrapping up, it is time to look forward to the offseason. One of the biggest events will no doubt be the Seattle Kraken expansion draft. Because this will be such a big event, Alex has Dan Morse on to join him and break it all down.
The two look at all kinds of things such as how can Seattle build this team effectively? As well, what are the expectations like for year one in Seattle? Alex wants to see the focus be on cap space and draft picks, using them effectively to set up a nice future. However, there also needs to be a balance between that and entertaining fans. Losing a bunch of games 2-1 seems like a bad strategy for a new team. They also take a look at what player the Ottawa Senators may lose. Tune in for all of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
Alex is back for another week of content! Although the Senators season is officially over, there is still plenty to talk about. The playoff discussion from Alex is mostly on the MnM Hockey Podcast. Instead, the Ottawa Senators roster and season will be the focus today. He has Kevin Lee join him and the two give letter grades to each player and their season. They also grade DJ Smith and Pierre Dorion too.
Kevin takes a look at it from expectations vs reality standpoint, grading based on what he expected. Alex on the other hand takes a look at things from what happened regardless of expectations. So if a player was expected to be bad and was bad, he got a lower grade from Alex than he did from Kevin. Overall, it makes for some great discussion and interesting viewpoints on all kinds of different players. They also take a look at the Artem Zub contract and discuss what they liked about it.

From there, they take a look at who surprised them this year from an on and off-ice situation. Tune in for all of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens podcast!

From there, they switch to goaltending and discuss what Matt Murray has to do next year to get back on track. As well as discussing why it looks like Marcus Hogberg is at the end of his time in Ottawa. Finally, they talk about what they want to see going into the offseason. Any additions they should make and what to expect next season. Tune in for all of this and more, with the Last Word on Sens Podcast!
