English translation of The Lullabies
Oh, my little child is hungry
My little child is hungry
Oh, my little child’s stomach is growling
the stomach is growling
Oh, mother, breastfeed your child
Who has beaten my little child?
Has my child been blessed with a long life or a short life?
++++
Oh, my little child, please don’t cry
Doves are yet to fly
Please cry after they fly
who has beaten my little child?
we will beat him too
My child’s mother has gone to the field to transplant paddy
Will tell her when she comes
When my child cries,
it sounds like a bugle
I love to keep listening to it

Rukasen Rongkim
So narrates this song of Rukasen,
A time of long winter nights,
The chief no more to sleep,
Waited for the cock to crow,
Up with the first cock crow,
The song says,
Placed himself a bowl,
Filled with wine brimming,
Sipping wine the chief,
Thoughtful for something,
Summoned Pherangke for message to take,
Inform the thousand households in the realm,
A meeting be held tonight,
Informed thousand village members all,
Marching forward steps,
To the chieftain’s house,
Sitting in the outhouse all,
The chief speaking to the crowd,
My sons and subjects all,
Now Our village hoary old,
The Amtarsing growing white all around,
New village site to seek,
New village to build,
With the sunrise next,
Villagers marched to chieftain’s house,
Crowded the chieftain’s house,
Sitting in the outhouse all,
The chief speaking to the crowd,
Sharpening stone to take,
Spade to take,
Some eggs also to take,
Few grains of rice to take,
The song says,
Take care with the eggs,
Thus all marched in line,
The chief walked the last,
Had reached the Kular hill,
Spread leaves on ground all to sit,
The chief speaking to the crowd,
This the high Kular hill,
Look around the hill,
After looking all around,
Found the place a perfect fit,
Chief asking more,
Look for water flow,
There a flowing water be,
The song says,
The river Kopli by the hill,
Stoneplate placed the chief,
Banana leaf on top,
With rice grains on it,
Took the egg in hand,
The intonations to make,
Bless a village to build,
Let the egg break in proper piece,
The chief at the end,
Hit the egg to break,
Yolks and shells in proper lines,
Broken shells still with yolks,
All portents well,
Raised the houses two,
Later other houses too,
Later thousand houses came to fill,
Dug the deeps around and hurdles heaped,
Soon to fill with colour blooms,
Children ran in troupes,
People from afar pointing to the place,
There the village of Ru Kasen,
Flowering trees growing high,
Rounded with bamboos and vines,
Mango jackfruits came in line,
Thus narrates the song of Ru Kasen,
Thus the village of chief Kasen,
People from afar pointed to the place,
That surely is the village of Kasen.

The tale has been translated into English from Assamese by Madan Sarma and Gautam Kumar Borah, both of them Professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, Tezpur University.

Dighal Thengia, the Long-legged one
Once upon a time there was an old woman. She eked out a living by selling the milk from the cows she kept. Her bed-room was quite old. The roof over it used to leak because the thatch it was made of had worn out.
It was a cloudy evening. The old woman took her meal and then arranged to go to bed. “Oh, Lord, protect me from Dighal Thengia”, she prayed and got into bed.
One thief was hiding that night near the cowshed with his secret plan to lift one of the cows of the old woman. He anxiously waited for her to fall asleep. With intent to eat a cow a tiger too came there in secret, groping in the darkness. He hid amid the cows under the shed and waited eagerly for the old woman to go off. Both the tiger and the thief heard what the old woman had uttered, but unable to make out what she was saying, they began to wonder, “Dighal thengia, the long-legged one? What on earth is it?
As the old woman was falling asleep the thief entered the cowshed to lift a cow. He thought, “It’s so dark in here, how do I know which is healthy, which is not? Well, the one that will jump up when I touch its rump must be the healthiest and the best.” With this conclusion he began to stroke the rumps of the cows until his hand fell upon the rump of the tiger. The tiger jumped up. This is indeed very smart - I cannot afford to lose it, thought the thief and twisted his tail to drive it home. The tiger jumped up once again, thinking it must be what the old woman called “Dighal Thengia, the long-legged thing.”
"This is not an ordinary cow; I don’t think I can manage it without being on its back, thought the thief and jumped onto the back of the tiger." Convinced that he was now in full grip of Dighal Thengia, the tiger lost no time to leave the cowshed and began to frantically run.
On the other hand, the thief had concluded from the strange behaviour of the tiger –“It cannot be a cow; it’s rather a Dighal Thengia. Dighal Thengia seems to have got the better of me.” Thus, they mistook each other for Dighal Thengia and were terrified.
As the frantically running tiger with the thief on its back was about to enter the forest, the thief had made a desperate attempt to twist the neck of the tiger. ....

A Frog and a Tiger
And thus it came to pass..this story occurred when the earth was soft. There was an old tiger who went to forest in search of meat and food, deer and pigs. There was also a frog, who was dead scared of the tiger. The frog said, “Ba ko my friend, you are such an elderly tiger, but you almost trampled on me, not even mindful of your steps!” The old tiger replied,’ Sorry, I overlooked you…” The frog said again, “Not so, you elderly tiger should have been little more careful: and so he threw a challenge for a trail of strength. ...
And then, the frog jumped stop a tree stump and sat himself as if readying for a fight. The frog said to the old tiger—“Come on friend tiger, it is from here that we begin our show of strength…you or me first?” The tiger replied, “Dear friend, let me go first, as I know you’ll be so sluggish…!” And so, when the tiger was preparing to make a dash curling up tail, the frog quietly took a gulp of it’s tip. By the time the tiger jumped the distance and shook his tail, off fell the from in front. Already ahead, the frog said to the old tiger—“See, I am stronger than you!” The tiger too dashed again. And the frog, by repeating the same trick, biting the tip of the tiger’s tail, threw himself back in the front again. And again, the front said to the tiger. “Ko, I’ve reached ahead of you here too…”

A Namghar is the inclusive community prayer house of an Assamese village. More than a reverent place of worship, a Namghar is a common place of gathering for the community in Assam, a state in India's Northeast.
It was Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva, the 15th century social reformer and religious preacher who initiated this institution. Srimanta Sankardeva was one of the greatest communicators on earth who laid the foundations of Assamese literature. He introduced different forms of performing arts such as Borgeet, Bhaona, Ankiya Naat, Gaayan-Baayan , etc. to popularise the Bhakti Movement in Assam through the institution of Namghar.
The doors of a village Namghar are open to individuals across caste, creed and gender.
A Namghar plays a key role in leading the village in a multitude of activities. These include designing costumes for bhaona, making various musical instruments and arrangement of lights among others. It is the villagers who are involved in these year long activities. Some of the villagers may also be involved in making of the Guru Asana or Singhasana. The Guru Asana is the object of reverence which is an ornamental seat kept at the Sanctum Sanctorum, the Manikut.
The day-to-day affairs of a Namghar is run by a Managing Committee elected democratically. Only the deserving ones are entitled to occupy the positions. The persons occupying the positions are merely office bearers and do not enjoy any special privileges on account of their positions. Also, even the wealthiest in the village is supposed to abide by the office bearers of the Namghar.
This is the first episode of a special podcast on Namghar produced and hosted by Abhilash Bapanasha, a student of M. A. (3rd Semester) at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University as part of his Summer Internship at NEZINE.
