We are on a mission to restore the meaning and significance of marriage. Each week we will interview people who are striving for ultimate success in their marriage just as much as in their personal ambitions. We believe that the family unit is the heart and soul of our culture, and the health and vibrancy between a husband and wife is the core foundation of the family. In a follow up to our first conversation about what it islike to be on a journey back to faith, long-time and dear friend of mine, Paul Gallagher, joins me again to dive deeper into the concept of God. For instance, is God a “who” or a “what?” We have another open and honest conversation, asking questions that many don’t dare to ask for fear that it might dampen their faith. On the contrary, I believe these questions can serve to strengthen our faith and solidify our beliefs.

At times throughout this episode, these questions lead tosome prickly back-and-forths about different beliefs and ultimate truths. However, with the overall objective of seeking to understand various viewpoints.

This is an insightful, open, and honest conversation with a close and long-time friend of mine about his current path to faith and enlightenment. In a recent conversation, Paul mentioned his coming back to faith. His comment got mecurious. What was it that prompted his pursuit? What questions is he trying to answer? What is he hoping to find?

I believe many people are experiencing a similar awakeningin recent years. This conversation is about understanding Paul’s reflections, desires, and thought process, to know how to meet each other where we are and help get to where we are destined to go.

At the beginning of Matthew chapter 10, Jesus gives hisdisciples specific authority and sends them out with instructions. There are three distinct instructions he gives them – to Go, Preach, and Do. Then he tells them to give all of this freely and why they should do so.

In this episode we discuss:

  1. “Go to the lost sheep.” (Matthew 10:6)

  2. “Preach this message: The kingdom of heaven isnear." (Matthew 10:7)

  3. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse thosewho have leprosy, drive out demons.” (Matthew 10:8a)

  4. “Freely you have received. Freely give.” (Matthew 10:8b)

Matthew 8:22

We cover two themes in this episode: (1)How to watch out and be prepared for false prophets, and (2)Doing what Jesus instructed us to do. Deception is rampant in cultural messaging today. Words of the prophet Isaiahare as real today as ever,

“So justice is driven back, and righteousness standsat a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter. Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.” (Isaiah 59:14-15

How do we recognize truth from deception in order to put the truth into practice?

Following are the verses we discuss:

  1. “Watch out for false prophets.”

Matthew 7:15

  1. “…(do) the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 7:21

  1. “Hear these words of mine and put them intopractice.”

In the book of James closely follows Jesus’ sermon on themount, which we have been covering for a few weeks. James 4:2-3 says, “You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives. In this episode, we cover prayer and seeking God in a similar way that James described; we touch on the golden rule; and connect those instructions to the ultimate essence of this path we are on…to enter through the narrow gate.

Following are the verses we discuss:

  1. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and youwill find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7

  1. “So in everything, do to others what you wouldhave them do to you...”

Matthew 7:12

  1. “Enter through the narrow gate...”

It is a common misconception that we should make no judgment on anyone or anything. Based on the scriptures covered in this episode, we could easily make that assumption. However, we are called to make judgments ofour own actions and character, and to make evaluations of the actions of our fellow believers, those closest to us. As we read the full context of Jesus’ instructions, the “intent” behind our words is what matters most.

Following are the verses we discuss:

  1. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”

Matthew 7:1

  1. “First take the plank out of your own eye, andthen you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Matthew 7:3

  1. “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throwyour pearls to pigs.”

Matthew 7:6

In this episode, I’m joined by my son, Jonathan, for a funconversation about a movie watching experience we started together one year ago. We wanted to watch the highest grossing films of every year, going back as far as we could. The oldest movie we were able to find was 1933’s King Kong, and we watched the highest grossing annual films through 2023.

This is the first conversation we had after finishing the list, and we talk about things that surprised us, shifts in moviemaking over the years, the worst and best movies we watched. We end the episode by ranking our Top-20. You may (or may not) be surprised!

Continuing in our series to walk the Path of Discipleship, today’s topic is very simple yet difficult to follow. We are not to worry about gaining anything in this life, but instead seek the kingdom of heaven FIRST in everything we do.

Following are the verses we discuss:

  1. “Do not store up for yourselves treasures onearth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures inheaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:19-20

  1. “You cannot serve both God and money.”

Matthew 6:24b

  1. “But seek first his kingdom and hisrighteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33

  1. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.”

Matthew 6:25

  1. “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.”

Matthew 6:34

Continuing in our series to walk the Path of Discipleship, today we discuss living and giving unselfishly. In Philippians 2:3-4, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your owninterests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

In his letters to the Corinthians, Paul also referred toJeremiah 9:23-24, which says, “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice andrighteousness on earth, for in these I delight.”

Paul may very well have been referring to Jesus’ teachingfrom Matthew 6:1-18, covered in this episode in which we attempt to answer the question: If you have a desire to do something good, but would gain nothing personally from it, would you still do it?

Following are the instructions we discuss in this episode:

  1. “Be careful not to do your acts of righteousnessbefore men, to be seen by them…So when you give to the needy, do not announceit with trumpets…But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand knowwhat your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret.”

Matthew 6:1a, 2a, 3-4a

  1. “When you pray, go into your room, close thedoor and pray to your Father who is unseen.”

Matthew 6:6

  1. “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”

Matthew 6:7

  1. “When you fast, do not look somber asthe hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father…”

Matthew 6:16-18

This episode kicks off a new series about The Path ofDiscipleship. During this series, we will identify all the commands and instructions spoken by Jesus in the Gospels that teach us how to live. Each week, we will highlight a few of those instructions, discuss them, pray aboutthem, and seek to live them out each day.

Why do this? Why now?

The greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.” John later wrote, “And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands.” To fulfill the greatest commandment, we must know how Jesus instructed us to live and do it! By practicing what He taught that we become Disciples. And then, we are also equipped to fulfill the great commission.

Come along with us each week in walking the path ofdiscipleship!

This is a very special episode as my wife joins me for thefirst time on a podcast. Together, we discuss an Easter tradition that started in a bumpy, and somewhat contentious, way several years ago, but quickly turnedinto a beautiful experience that now adds so much significance to our celebration of Holy Week.

After hearing our story, we encourage everyone observingEaster to try something different this week, something uncomfortable, to step into the pain and uncertainty of Good Friday in a deeper way, in order to celebrate the joy of resurrection like never before.

Happy Easter.

What does it look like to live out a marriage that is 100-100 (vs. 50-50)? That is “Give and Receive” (vs. Give and Take)? That is, to give 100% of yourself without trying to take what you want, but instead, patiently waiting to receive what comes back to you.

In this episode, I read a chapter from my book, Ultra Marriage, which tells the story of a an extraordinary, yet trying, moment in my marriage that best encapsulates this perspective. For many readers, it is their favorite chapter in the book. Narrating this chapter, I didn’t realize how much emotion I still feel from these events over fifteen years later. It is a testament to the lasting power that one moment can have on a relationship.

In order to build a life on solid ground to prepare for whatever challenges, trials, or difficulties are ahead of us, we have got to get our homes in order! That starts with our marriages. Unfortunately, we have been taught a false narrative about what marriage really is and how it’s supposed to work. That narrative has contributed to half of all marriages ending in divorce.

In this episode, I expose the lie we have bought into and share two fundamental principles that will open us up to the truth behind a successful marriage.

If you are like me, you watch the news cycle and scratch your head at much of what you see, particularly from our elected leaders at all levels and in all parties. The question so many of are asking is, “What can I really do to make adifference?” We feel insignificant and powerless most of the time. BUT WE ARE NOT!

Ultimately, we hold all the power to impact our culture, country, and world right in our own homes. And that power starts with our marriages.

In this episode, I will share why your MARRIAGE just might be the vehicle that can create more positive influence and change in America than anything else we, or anyone, can do.

Throughout Lent in 2024, I will share an answered prayer from the Bible as a YT Short. Going through scripture, I've identified 44 specific references to a prayer that were answered.

Throughout Lent, let's spend more time in prayer than we do watching the news. Your prayers can have a greater impact on your life, your family, our country, and the world, than anything else you could do. We will see how prayer has changed the destinies of people and nations each day as we go through the Bible.

Tune in and pray on.

You all likely know the Christmas story…the birth of Jesus…or so you think. I thought I knew it, too, until I learned that I didn’t. There is so much more to the story than most of us were taught that highlights the greatness of God, and transforms the miracle with deeper meaning to the intricacies of Christmas.

In this episode, I share a little bit of that with you this Christmas season.

When I talk about my faith, I am referencing Jesus. In thisepisode, I describe the journey that led me to making the decision to believe in him. For me, it was at the same time both an easy decision and a tremendous struggle. It was initially an easy choice. However, even after years of being a practicing Christian, I came face to face with an important question: Do you really believe what you say you believe?

In this episode, I explain how a logical thinker like me came to the most important decision of my life.

As a father of four children with an entrepreneurial wife who worked almost every weekend, Justin Batt found himself alone, overwhelmed and outnumbered on Saturdays. With intentional thought and planning, he created an experience for his kids that they soon would label, “Daddy Saturday,” and a movement was born. Justin aims to disrupt fatherhood by creating intentional fathers who raise good kids who become great adults. Over Father’s Day weekend in June, he participated in the Fatherhood Festival, hosted at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton, OH and in partnership with the NFL Alumni Association.

As a serial entrepreneur, TEDx and international public speaker, multi-published author, coach, Spartan OCR racer, and farmer, he understands the challenges of a busy lifestyle. The family unit is the bedrock of a healthy society. Nothing will make a more positive change in the world than strengthening families. Husbands and wives loving and caring for each other, intentionally raising children with healthy value, and building each other up. That principal is the very purpose of this podcast. Stronger families lead to more thriving communities. Thriving communities lead to a more stable society. A more stable society leads to a better world.

Kevin Walker grew up in a family that epitomizes the closeness, care, and devotion that we all could benefit from modeling. And he is now striving to build that same type of family with his wife and young son. Kevin is the Co-Founder and Co-Host of the Live SOTE Podcast with his brother. Together they developed the acronym “SOTE,” which stands for Salt of the Earth, meaning a person of great worth and reliability. In our conversation, Kevin discusses the tremendous worth of growing up in Walker home, a family that embodies the very definition of the Salt of the Earth.

Show highlights:

· The influence of devoted parents and an older brother while growing up

· Life and marriage with a newborn

· The come-up story with a spouse by your side

Two military veterans, one an ex-homicide detective and recovering alcoholic, one jack of all trades but master of none, and a couple of hippies kinda winging it on a disordered journey to health and happiness. That is how this week’s guests have described themselves to their social media following. There is one additional definition on Justin’s Instagram page that puts this all into perspective and paints a picture of how the people who know Justin and Stefanie best view their purpose and passion…it says, “Hope Dealer!”

This past weekend, Justin won the 2022 Mid State Mile last man standing ultra-marathon, and Stefanie was there the whole weekend to crew and support him. With Stefanie’s help, Justin was able to break the course record by running 128 miles in 40 hours, with over 39,000 feet of elevation gain and loss! I was fortunate to see much of Justin’s run in person. It may have been the most remarkable accomplishment I have ever witnessed.

Justin and Stefanie not only give each other hope, but also to everyone they seek to inspire. This episode is about their story together, and the future they have been building for themselves. It is enough to give anyone the hope they need.

Show highlights:

· Growing up a rebel

· Justin’s time in the Army, where he and Stefanie met

· Going through the Police Academy and getting sober

· Transitioning to an ultra-runner

· It’s all about progress

· The mindset of running 100 miles on a treadmill

· Holding your spouse to a standard

· The difference between real and fake pain

It is difficult to think of a more challenging job, with the tremendous time demand and constant pressure to perform, than that of a head football coach. The number of families destroyed because husbands and fathers spend all their time coaching is heartbreaking. Coach Kurt Hines is currently the head football coach at Coronado High School in California and has been a successful high school football coach for twenty-five years. He has won multiple championships and was the 2012 Head Football Coach of the Year. And he has done it on his terms.

In our conversation, Coach Hines shares why and how he has kept his faith and family as his top priorities throughout his career. He is a man who knows exactly who he is, stands for what he believes, and is relentlessly unwavering in pursuit of the life he is meant to live.

Show highlights:

  • Mentality of coaching football
  • How to transition from the intensity of the football field to home life

Have you ever looked at someone else and wondered, “How do they do it all?” You know people like this; they’re a spouse, parent, run a business (or multiple businesses), host a podcast, coach, speak, and always have a smile on their face while they do that and so much more. I often find myself wondering how they keep it all together and always show up, to whatever the task is at hand, ready to go and give it their best.

Megan Reilly is exactly that type of person. She is COO and Co-Owner of an international franchise. She is a Shark Tank Alum. She is the creator and host of the Who Is Your Momma Podcast, where she speaks to the mothers of some of the world’s most successful, CEOs, athletes, and entertainers. She works as an expert mentor for Jesse Itzler's elite coaching program. Above all, Megan is a dedicated wife and Mom. She and her husband, Chris, have been married for 14 years and have three daughters under 10. Together, they renovate homes and love to play outside with their kids and their 100-pound dog, Ralph.

In this episode, you will learn the mindsets and strategies that Megan uses to build, grow, and maximize her family life and every endeavor she sets out to accomplish.

Show highlights:

  • Managing time for kids while running international business and podcast
  • The importance of being around like-minded couples
  • How prioritizing marriage will amplify all other areas in life
  • The importance of intentionality with your spouse
  • Why it is essential to have a long-term perspective in your marriage
  • Managing an identity crisis with the introduction of kids
  • The value of the little things
  • Why uninterrupted quality time is better than quantity of time
  • How kids can make you a better spouse

This week marks National Police Week in 2022. It is a time each year that offers honor, remembrance, and peer support, while allowing law enforcement, survivors, and citizens to gather and pay homage to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. The events throughout this week attract thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. Our guest this week is in honor of all police officers who stand watch on our behalf.

Stephanie Jones is an author, speaker, and coach. She has also been married to a police officer for nineteen years. She and I had a conversation about what we typically don’t see, and don’t think about, inside the marriages of our officers. She shares a sobering reality that she has lived with every single day for nearly two decades. Below is a short excerpt from a piece she once posted on Facebook:

“Every day when my officer leaves, I send him on his way with hugs, kisses, and I love you’s. Some days I stand in the window watching him pull out of the driveway, searing the memory in my mind, just in case he doesn’t return. That’s the reality and biggest fear of every police wife. It’s a fear we bury but keep with us until we hear the garage door open and the sound of Velcro ripping off.”

God bless our police officers, their spouses, and children.

Show highlights:

  • How she got started in law enforcement
  • The mindset of being a police wife
  • What it was like to lose a brother from the Police Academy in the line of duty
  • The difficult decisions of being in a police family
  • The importance of understanding your spouse’s daily life
  • The dangers and difficulties of living with negative stereotypes of police officers
  • The compounded traumas of being a police officer
  • Tools to endure through a pressure packed lifestyle

What if you left home for what was supposed to be a short trip and soon discovered that you would be away from your spouse, with whom you’ve been married for about four months, indefinitely? What if, during that time apart, your spouse was going through rigorous treatments for cancer, while you found yourself in the hospital with a heart condition? On top of that, what if you couldn’t even talk to each other? How would you find the strength to endure?

That is precisely the situation this week’s guest, Gavin Hannan, found himself in just as the pandemic was starting. After he left for his trip, his wife’s doctors thought it was too dangerous for him to return until the threat of the pandemic had passed. What they thought would be two weeks of isolation turned into a year and a half apart, with each of them going through health issues. What Gavin and his wife faced, how they made it through, and who they are becoming on the other side is a story as inspirational as any you’ve heard. You will learn how they lean on the principles respect, trust, faith, love, and humor to embrace each day to the fullest, no matter what circumstances a day presents. You will see why, every day, they choose each other.

Show highlights:

  • Gavin’s experience doing the 4x4x48

Based on statistics, nearly half of all marriages fail. Unfortunately, the statistics don’t tell the whole truth. While the divorce rate is approximately fifty percent, how successful are the other fifty percent? How many couples pour as much planning, time, and effort into their relationship as they do their career or business. How many strive to unleash the full potential of their marriage?

Jeff Forrester has had a successful multi-faceted career covering sales, management, and training. He has most recently transitioned to become an entrepreneur as a Coach, Speaker, and Culture Consultant with his own company, Conquer It Consulting. He is a co-founder of the Mighty Warrior Council, a brotherhood designed for imperfect men that are seeking to grow together through living a life of integrity, discipline, and valor.

He is also the author of Unleashed Potential: Simple Steps to Be the Best Version of Yourself. In his book, Jeff explains four key principles to help people get more out of their career and life. In our conversation, we unpack how those same four principles can also help you unleash the potential in your marriage.

Show highlights:

  • The Importance of Communication – both internal and external
  • Knowing Yourself

  • Setting the Proper Course
  • Going through a difficult transition as a family

At twenty-five years old, Laura Carney met her husband-to-be in a summer romance that began like a movie script, then suddenly lost her father in a tragic car accident three months later. After a decade long relationship, the two of them got married and, six months later, found her father’s bucket list when he was a young man. What if, in the midst of what could escalate into a heated exchange with another person, you simply looked them in the eyes and said, “Same team,” in a sincere voice? More importantly, what if we lived out our marriages as if we were on the same team? The reality is, we are on the same team or, at least, we should be. Unfortunately, much of the time, we act like competing opponents.

Tanner McFarland is engaged to be married to his longtime girlfriend of seven years in May 2022. Over that time, the two of them have not only used that phrase when disagreements have become difficult, but also believe it to be the truth.

Tanner is the author of College Made Easy: My Personal Textbook of How-To's and Don't-Do's of College. He loves to keep his body moving, whether at the gym, running, or practicing his most recent physical endeavor, Jiu-Jitsu. He and his fiancée are not only planning their wedding, but they are also preparing for marriage. There is a big difference.

Joy and Pain. The journey through life includes both. Whichever we focus on more often and intentionally feed is what we will experience more. Ultimately, it comes down to a choice. We can focus on the pain and feed negativity, or we can seek the joy and feeding positivity. We can choose to be intentional about working through the pain and challenges that we face in order to get to the joy that awaits. The greatest things in life are on the other side of pain and suffering.

John and Caitlin Hancock are one of my favorite couples on social media! They experience as much joy, fun, and laughter together as any couple I’ve met. But here’s the catch. All marriages are built upon a certain foundation and the strength of that foundation will set up how the relationship unfolds over time. It can support and drive successful, joyful, thriving and growing marriage; or, if easily cracked, it can lead a marriage down a very difficult and uncertain path.

Teddy and Lindsay Mitrosilis have been married for five years and have a daughter who is just over a year and a half old. Lindsay runs her own business, serving entrepreneurs, business leaders, and influencers through LinkedIn, and Teddy is an entrepreneur himself as head of enterprise consulting for an immersive learning technology company. They are active in their personal lives, consistently challenging themselves to push their limits.

Underneath all of that, they have built their marriage on a foundation of faith. Their faith in Christ defines who they are individually and is at the center of their marriage. In this conversation, they unpack how they prepared themselves on their faith journey before they even met, and how their faith leads their relationship.

There is no greater responsibility in life than raising children, and the first, perhaps most important, action parents can take in training them up is to love each other. Modeling love in front of them, through good times and bad, has a tremendous positive influence.

Better known as Chili, Noah Cochran is a young southern man and exceptional ultramarathon runner who works with the @3of7Project, leading missions in the backcountry, co-hosting the 3 of 7 Podcast, and engaging with the community in many other ways. He is also a bachelor.

Why in the world would a single young man, who’s never been married, be fit to interview about marriage? Because his parents have emulated a selfless, loving relationship that, growing up, he knew was special. He saw his parents live out the type of marriage we all hope to have when we recite our wedding vows.

This conversation is from the viewpoint of someone who grew up thankful for the parents he has and might just be the most important perspective from which we look at marriage. If you have children, or want to have children someday, he offers an invaluable viewpoint. And if you’re single, Noah offers some wise and prudent perspectives on dating.

Show highlights:

  • Why a single guy is on a marriage podcast
  • Being selfless
  • Choosing family first
  • Fighting vs. Disagreeing
  • Being patient as a single person
  • How your marriage effects your children
  • The impact family has on culture
