Disrupting the mental health and medical system for people with chronic, invisible illnesses. We will no longer accept lack of answers, empathy, and guidance from the professionals we are told to trust. It’s not in your head, you are not a burden, and we’ll prove that to you one episode at a time. I'm an Atlanta-based mental health therapist specializing in chronic pain / invisible illnesses. This podcast is for educational and insight purposes only and should not be used as a replacement for mental health treatment. Episode Summary: In this episode, Destiny sits down with Kamilah Jones, PharmD, LPC, CRC, to explore the crucial difference between stress and burnout, particularly for healthcare professionals. Kamilah shares her personal journey from pharmacist to therapist, including her own experience with burnout while building her private practice - and why knowing what to do wasn't enough to prevent it. They talk about why healthcare workers are uniquely vulnerable to burnout due to competitive training, emotional labor, and systemic constraints, and discuss the uncomfortable truth that resources (financial, social, and professional support) often matter more than resilience when it comes to recovery. The conversation covers practical strategies for healthcare providers, including the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, knowing when to refer out, and recognizing the signs that professional help is needed. Kamilah offers a free self-care guide for stress and burnout at InTouch Wellness, and both hosts emphasize that asking for help isn't weakness - it's wisdom.

Episode summary:
In this episode, sports and orthopedic physical therapist Rick Olderman explains why chronic pain is a systems problem, not a component problem, and how our medical system's focus on individual tissues misses the bigger picture. Through fascinating patient stories - like how a 20-year-old ankle injury can cause back pain 30 years later when left unchecked - Rick demonstrates how compensation patterns create chains of dysfunction throughout the body. We explore the science of myofibroblasts, specialized connective tissue that responds to stress hormones and provides a real, physical pathway for how emotional states manifest as tension in the body. This conversation challenges the false dichotomy of pain being "all physical" or "all mental" and offers hope for people who've been told "nothing's wrong" while living with very real symptoms.

Episode summary:
In this episode, I sit down with Shana Evans Basset, a Licensed Professional Counselor from Atlanta, to explore the complex intersection of chronic illness, emotional regulation, and healing. We get into why living with chronic pain is like being trapped in an abusive relationship you can't leave, the profound grief that comes with losing the life you thought you'd have, and how our "snap out of it" culture makes everything harder. Shana explains why emotional regulation isn't about fixing yourself or positive thinking your way out of symptoms - it's about learning to be with uncertainty, accepting what you can't control, and recognizing when trying harder actually makes things worse. We also discuss the crucial role of community support, the isolation that comes with chronic illness, and how real healing often happens when we allow ourselves to fully grieve our losses rather than pushing through them.

Episode summary: In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Antonia Repollet to demystify clinical hypnosis and explore how it's revolutionizing treatment for gut-brain disorders like IBS and IBD. We dive into what clinical hypnosis actually is (spoiler: nothing like stage hypnosis), why it's so effective for digestive issues with 70-80% success rates, and what you can realistically expect from treatment. Dr. Repollet breaks down the gut-brain connection, explains how our nervous systems develop "muscle memory" for symptoms, and walks us through what sessions actually look like - including some fascinating techniques for people whose minds race too fast for traditional meditation. Whether you're dealing with functional disorders, chronic pain, or just curious about evidence-based mind-body approaches, this conversation offers practical insights and realistic expectations about what healing can look like.

Episode summary: In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Rita Gupta, a board-certified family medicine physician and integrative medicine practitioner, to discuss why you don't have to choose between traditional medicine and holistic approaches when managing chronic pain. We explore the three types of pain (nociceptive, neuropathic, and neuroplastic), explore how fear and anxiety create real physical symptoms in the body, and tackle some controversial territory around vaccines and chronic illness. Dr. Rita shares her unique perspective as someone who's lived with chronic pain herself while working within both traditional and integrative medical models, and we discuss practical strategies like understanding your personal recovery times, the importance of pain education in changing beliefs, and why finding practitioners who see you as a whole human - not just a collection of symptoms - can be life-changing. Whether you're feeling stuck between medical approaches or struggling to make sense of conflicting health information, this conversation offers a balanced, nuanced perspective on creating your own integrated approach to healing.

Episode Summary: In this episode, registered dietitian Louisa O'Grady shares practical, evidence-based nutrition strategies for managing EDS, POTS, and MCAS without falling into restrictive diet patterns. Louisa, who lives with these conditions herself, debunks common myths about low histamine diets (they're meant to be temporary, not lifelong), introduces important tips like using belly bands for POTS symptom management during meals, and explains why your food reactions might actually be triggered by environmental factors like stress or barometric pressure changes rather than the food itself. She emphasizes an additive rather than restrictive approach to nutrition, offering practical solutions throughout the whole episode to manage histamine levels and strategic fiber introduction for gut health. Throughout the conversation, Louisa highlights the importance of individualized care, nervous system regulation, and working with qualified professionals who understand the complex interplay between these conditions and nutrition.

Episode summary: In this follow-up episode with registered dietitian Samina Qureshi, we explore her new clinical textbook that tackles something I see all the time in my practice - when chronic GI conditions create eating patterns that look disordered but have nothing to do with weight or body image. Samina and her team of 10 health professionals wrote this resource because they were seeing patients come in terrified of food, experiencing unexplained weight loss, not because they wanted to be thin, but because they were genuinely afraid of throwing up or having worsened GI symptoms. We talk about ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and how it shows up in the GI space, why it's so important to believe patients when they say certain foods cause pain even without a formal diagnosis, and how the goal isn't just telling someone to "eat and you'll feel better" - because how frustrating is that advice? Instead, it's about finding accessible ways to nourish their body while expanding their diet and helping them feel confident around food again. This conversation is valuable for both clinicians who want to understand these complex intersections and for anyone living with GI conditions who's been told their very real physical symptoms are just anxiety when they're actually doing what they can to keep their body safe.

Episode summary: In this episode, I sit down with ADHD nutrition research expert Annika Angelo to bust some of the biggest myths floating around ADHD and diet. We talk about why that viral "78% improvement" elimination diet study is actually BS, why you shouldn't be afraid of fruit, and the truth about Red 40 and food additives (spoiler: the US actually has stricter regulations than the EU). We talk about what stress really does to our bodies, why community is the secret ingredient most people ignore, and practical tips that actually work for ADHD brains. If you're tired of conflicting nutrition advice and want to know what the research actually says, this one's for you. Bottom line: stop putting so much pressure on yourself around food choices – there are way bigger factors affecting your health than whether you eat gluten.

At my sickest, I couldn't leave the house most days. Over 10 years later, I can have full days out without even thinking about it. This is a small part of my real, unfiltered story of living with chronic illness—the struggles with getting diagnosed, what finally started to help, and the hard truths about healing that no one talks about.
In this video, I share:
I talk honestly about low-dose naltrexone, ketotifen, functional medicine, and why healing isn't a one-size-fits-all journey. If you're struggling with chronic pain, ME/CFS, fibromyalgia, or just feeling lost in the medical system, this might resonate with you.
Chronic Pain & Illness IntensivesIf you're ready to work on changing your relationship with chronic pain while still taking proper medical care of yourself, I offer 1:1 intensives over 2-3 days.

Today I sit down with Emma Tynan, an Irish psychotherapist who specializes in medical trauma and chronic illness, bringing both professional expertise from over a decade as a nurse and personal understanding from her own chronic health journey. We explore the often-overlooked micro-traumas of chronic illness—how the real devastation often hits not during the big diagnosis moment, but in quiet daily realizations like the day you can't hold a spoon or write in a journal the way you used to.
In this episode, we discuss:
Emma offers practical guidance for both those living with chronic illness and the people who want to support them, emphasizing that there's no universal experience of illness and the most powerful thing we can offer is simply asking and listening rather than assuming we know what someone needs.

Episode summary:
In this episode, therapist Pamela Madsen, MS, LPC, explores the often-overlooked connection between narcissistic abuse and chronic pain conditions. Pamela breaks down the four types of narcissistic parents (grandiose, covert, malignant, and communal) and explains how growing up with narcissistic caregivers creates hypervigilance that extends beyond scanning the environment to scanning the body internally, amplifying pain perception and contributing to conditions like fibromyalgia, IBS, and migraines. She discusses why many high-achieving adults don't recognize their childhood experiences as traumatic, how complex PTSD manifests in successful people who come to therapy for seemingly unrelated issues, and why addressing the underlying trauma through therapy can significantly improve both emotional well-being and physical pain symptoms. Pamela emphasizes that healing begins with repairing the relationship with oneself and recognizing that you deserve care and are worthy of good things, rather than existing solely to benefit others.

Episode summary: This episode features Jared Walker, founder of DollarFor, a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating medical debt by making hospital charity care known, easy, and fair. Walker shares how he discovered that most nonprofit hospitals are legally required to provide financial assistance (charity care) to patients who meet certain income qualifications, yet hospitals rarely inform patients about these programs. And you’d be surprised at how high some of the income requirements are!
Since launching in 2012, DollarFor has helped eliminate nearly $90 million in medical debt by creating user-friendly tools that help patients determine eligibility and apply for charity care programs that can completely wipe out hospital bills. Walker explains that charity care is far more accessible than most people realize, with many programs covering households earning up to 250-400% of federal poverty guidelines, and offers practical advice for negotiating medical bills when charity care isn't an option.

Episode summary:
Jackie Williams-Reade, a marriage and family therapist with a PhD in medical family therapy, discusses family systems theory and particularly the concept of differentiation, which involves balancing authenticity with the conforming that’s often required in relationships. Jackie explores how childhood family dynamics, especially scapegoating, can affect adult behavior patterns and relationships with medical providers. She explains how people who were scapegoated as children often struggle with trusting themselves and advocating for their needs in healthcare settings. The conversation covers practical strategies for setting boundaries while staying connected, asking for help effectively, and recognizing that healing isn't about perfect responses but rather increased awareness and continued effort. Jackie and Destiny also discuss the challenges of navigating the medical system and how integrated care models can help bridge communication gaps between patients and providers.

Episode summary: Destiny Davis speaks with Kara Cruz, a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in women's mental health, particularly perinatal mental health and perimenopause. They discuss the importance of women trusting themselves when advocating for their health needs, as many experience being dismissed or unheard by healthcare providers. Kara shares strategies for self-advocacy, including practical approaches like symptom tracking and preparing questions, as well as emotional regulation techniques to help clients recognize bodily sensations and navigate nervous system responses during difficult healthcare interactions. They explore how past trauma and people-pleasing behaviors can interfere with self-advocacy, emphasizing that learning to trust yourself is foundational to health advocacy. Kara also highlights the importance of community support through her Women's Support Circle and discusses the need for comprehensive screening for the seven distinct perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

Episode summary:
In this episode, I talk with Dr. Jenny Tufenkina, a naturopathic physician who shares her framework of five root causes behind chronic fatigue and complex illnesses. Drawing from both her clinical experience and personal journey recovering from fatigue twice in her life, Dr. Jenny walks us through how the hormone triangle, chronic infections, toxic overload, mitochondrial dysfunction, and limbic system dysregulation can contribute to these conditions.
As someone currently addressing my own adrenal/hormone challenges, I appreciated her individualized approach that recognizes each person's unique situation. Dr. Jenny offers practical insights on identifying which root causes might be present in your case and potential paths forward, all while maintaining a compassionate perspective. For those interested in learning more, she's hosting a summit on chronic fatigue running April 11-18, 2025 with researchers and practitioners exploring these topics in depth.

Episode Summary:
In this episode, I chat with David McGettigan, an amazing pain and movement specialist who's been helping people for 15 years recover from chronic pain and other symptoms, like chemical sensitivity and insomnia. David works with folks who've been bounced around the healthcare system without finding real answers.
I love how he frames pain as an adaptation instead of a "dysfunction" - such a game-changer! We discuss the connection between sleep and pain (mind-blowing stuff about how poor sleep literally opens neural pathways to more pain), and how morning sunlight can reset your whole system.David shares his own journey with chronic pain and gives super practical advice about healing timelines - did you know tissue typically needs 6-8 week cycles to adapt? No wonder quick fixes don't stick!
What I appreciate most is how David balances solid science with real compassion - "evidence of safety" for your nervous system and pacing your recovery properly. If you're dealing with chronic pain or know someone who is, this conversation offers both hope and practical steps forward. David truly believes change is possible at any stage, and after talking with him, I do too!

Episode summary:
In this episode, we speak with Rachel Smith, a certified personal trainer with a Master's in Exercise Science who specializes in working with clients with fibromyalgia and chronic pain. Rachel shares her personal journey with fibromyalgia, diagnosed in 2010, and how she discovered that strength training was particularly effective for managing her symptoms. She discusses the importance of individualized approaches to exercise, the challenge of breaking the "boom and bust" cycle many chronic pain sufferers experience, and why a gradual, consistent approach is more effective than pushing to extremes. Rachel also addresses common myths about fibromyalgia treatment, particularly around diet, and explains how her program, FibroFit Warriors, combines evidence-based methods with community support. For those newly diagnosed, she emphasizes the value of finding trusted information sources and avoiding the negativity often found in online support groups.

Episode summary: Samina Qureshi is a registered dietitian specializing in IBS management from a weight-inclusive perspective. She challenges the common approach of endless food elimination, revealing that the standard low FODMAP diet should only last 2-4 weeks, not months or years as many attempt. Samina explains why food sensitivity tests are largely unreliable and how restriction often worsens gut symptoms by disrupting motility and starving beneficial gut bacteria. Instead, she advocates for focusing on adding variety rather than eliminating foods, and recognizes that simply nourishing your body regularly is powerful nervous system work. For those caught in cycles of restriction and worsening symptoms, Samina offers a refreshing path forward that expands food choices while addressing individual digestive needs, proving that healing your relationship with food and finding relief from IBS symptoms can happen simultaneously.

Episode summary:
In this episode, therapist Miranda Campbell, LCSW, co-author of "The Attachment Makeover," joins host Destiny Davis LPC CRC to explore how attachment styles impact chronic illness management. Miranda explains that attachment styles aren't fixed and we can develop "earned secure attachment" through intentional work. She breaks down how anxious attachment (fear of disconnection), avoidant attachment (fear of closeness), and disorganized attachment (unpredictable push-pull dynamics) affect both patients and caregivers in illness contexts.
Drawing from her own experience with migraines, Miranda offers practical strategies for developing more secure patterns and adjusting expectations about what relationships can look like. The conversation highlights the cultural context of attachment wounds, particularly in BIPOC communities, and emphasizes that understanding these dynamics isn't about blame but creating pathways to more compassionate care relationships.

In this episode, Dr. Monica Blied and I have a real conversation about creating a healthier relationship with movement when living with chronic illness. Dr. Blied shares her personal journey with lupus, fibromyalgia, and later-diagnosed ADHD and autism, which led her to develop the free Faces of Health app offering mental health skills and somatic exercises. She provides a practical three-step approach to movement: using technology (like the FitOn app) for accessible workouts, embracing slow pacing rather than pushing too hard, and working out with friends for accountability.
Throughout the episode, we demonstrate simple chair yoga and range-of-motion exercises, emphasizing that movement shouldn't make your body feel worse. Dr. Blied highlights the importance of self-compassion, reminding listeners that progress isn't linear and that it's okay if your best looks different each day.
The episode concludes with a bonus announcement about a new body doubling group in the Mentally Well While Chronically Ill membership, where members can join together for PT exercises, cleaning, meal prep, and other activities that benefit from community support.

Episode Summary:
This is a candid discussion between two therapists, Destiny Davis and Victoria Rodriguez, about their personal experiences with breakfast, disordered eating, and navigating food choices while living with chronic illnesses. They discuss how their relationships with food have evolved from restrictive eating patterns and diet culture influences to more balanced, intuitive approaches. Both share their struggles with food aversions, learning to listen to their bodies, and finding "safe foods" that work for them. They offer practical breakfast suggestions while emphasizing that what works for one person may not work for another. The conversation touches on cultural aspects of food, the complexity of making food choices with chronic illnesses, and the importance of breaking free from rigid food rules.

Discussing the triggers for chronic illness flare-ups, which can be physical, emotional, or environmental.
While identifying and avoiding specific triggers can be helpful, overanalyzing the reasons behind flare-ups can be counterproductive. Instead, the focus should be on implementing a flare-up protocol that includes daily care practices like guilt-free rest, regular meals, comfort measures, and stress reduction techniques.
By prioritizing response strategies and maintaining mindful awareness, we can better manage our symptoms and improve cognitive function despite the challenges of brain fog and other distressing symptoms.

In today’s conversation, Rowan Crawfish and I discusses the importance of community and personal advocacy, particularly for marginalized groups, with a focus on art therapy for people with chronic illnesses. Rowan is a clinical mental health counselor and art therapist in Savannah, Georgia, specializing in working with the neurodivergent, LGBTQ, and fat liberation communities. She highlights the transformative potential of art therapy, specifically phototherapy, in expressing the lived experiences of individuals with chronic illness. The technique allows patients to creatively convey their medical symptoms and advocate for themselves in medical settings. The conversation also moves into the decolonization of therapy, emphasizing an inclusive approach considering systemic influences like patriarchy and capitalism. We explore the idea of community building, offering support groups tailored for different needs, and encourage clients to use art to process emotions and foster community engagements.

Chronic pain can feel like a raging bear inside you. It's loud, scary, and all-consuming. But what if there was a way to calm the bear and find some peace?
In this conversation, Jason Therrien and Destiny Winters explore the concept of pain as a complex experience, influenced by physical, emotional, and psychological factors.
Jason is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Therapeutic Pain Specialist and Certified Health and Well-being Coach, and Destiny Winters is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor.
They discuss a different approach to chronic pain management – moving away from the traditional "find-and-fix" mentality and instead, highlight the importance of understanding your pain, rather than just getting rid of it without real awareness first.

Sade is a sex therapist and intimacy coach, and I couldn’t be more excited to feature her this week. We discuss the emotional and physical aspects of pain conditions, like vaginismus; the power of a nap; holding your pee and the pelvic floor; and learning to slow down.
I personally did a date night with my husband led by Sade, and it was so much fun! Go to her website to see all the amazing offerings she has for you.

Buy Maureen's workbook here!
Maureen Kane is a therapist in Washington state. But more than that, she’s an author and a human. In our second interview, Maureen and I talk about how to start thinking about who you are based on who you were and who you want to be. It’s a journey in figuring out yourself, the hardest and longest journey we’ll ever tackle.
Maureen’s workbook is a perfect companion to this work, and I hope you enjoy our interview and her workbook as well!

Lindsay Voorhees is an occupational therapist, wellness coach, and mindful movement guide who helps people discover ways to thrive while living with chronic and complex health conditions. She worked for several years in hospital-based Occupational therapy settings, from an inpatient spinal cord injury unit to acute care and outpatient neurologic rehab. After witnessing the gaps and limitations within the healthcare system, she shifted her work from these more medicalized settings into a private practice better suited for instilling wellness and learning to thrive instead of just survive.Lindsay works with clients navigating chronic or complex health challenges, including multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, autoimmunity, long COVID, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, cancer recovery, endometriosis, and more. She brings her expertise in neuro occupational therapy, mental health, and embodiment work into collaborative 1-to-1 client work as well as her group program, Root to Rise: Living Well with Chronic Illness.Connect w/ GuestEmail: contact@lindsayvoorhees.comWebsite: www.lindsayvoorhees.comIG: https://www.instagram.com/lindsayvoorheeswellness__________________________________________________Connect with Destiny email: destiny@destinywinters.com IG: @the.chronicillnesstherapist.comwebsite: thechronicillnesstherapist.com***If you like any of The Chronic Illness Therapist episodes, please leave a review! The concept of pacing is so difficult to get down because we get hung up on what we want to do in an ideal world vs what we’re capable of doing. And here’s the thing - the more we do this, the LESS capable we think we are. So there’s a shit ton of of trial and error - trying not to do too much and failing, then finding compassion for yourself AND properly supporting yourself with and during rest. Then trying again next time, slightly differently. This allows us to learn 1) what kind of supports we need 2) how long it takes us to recover from different kinds of activities 3) what’s important enough to us to use our energy on.

In this episode, we take a look at autism and ADHD, debunking common misconceptions and shedding light on the truths often obscured by ableism. Dr. Antonia Strothers explores the complexities of masking, where individuals unconsciously learn to protect themselves from discrimination. We discuss why social skills don't exclude someone from being autistic, and how good academic performance doesn't invalidate a potential ADHD diagnosis. The conversation then shifts to the importance of recognizing telltale signs that may warrant further exploration for a potential ADHD diagnosis. Finally, we delve into the concept of collaborative problem-solving, empowering listeners with tools to navigate these misunderstood conditions more effectively. In this episode, we explore the controversial field of German New Medicine and its potential impact on chronic illness. German New Medicine is a theory that suggests that all diseases, including chronic illnesses, are caused by unresolved emotional conflicts that affect our body's natural healing mechanisms. Katherine Housh, a German New Medicine practitioner, will explain the principles behind this theory and how it differs from traditional medical approaches.
It is my (Destiny Winters) opinion that GNM and all alternative approaches be used in conjunction with, not instead of, conventional medicine. Use your intuition and be open to dialogue with all types of practitioners, and never let fear guide your decisions. Let your grounded understanding and values guide your actions.

If you've ever felt like your external life was affecting your inner world, then you might want to explore how direct work on the chakras can help. There are so many modalities to choose from, such as Reiki, breath work, and EFT/tapping. However, if you're willing to take the leap and try something new, then you might just discover a whole new level of balance and harmony in your life. Reiki, for example, is a powerful tool for balancing the chakras and creating a sense of inner peace. But if you're skeptical about energy work, then it might be hard to take that first step.
Therefore, it's important to understand how energy work is being integrated into western therapy practices. By seeing the benefits of energy work in a more scientific and evidence-based context, it becomes easier to embrace these practices as a way of supporting our overall well-being.
If you're looking to cultivate a sense of safety within your body, then energy work can be a powerful tool to help you achieve that. But it requires an open mind and a willingness to explore new possibilities.

Sex therapy isn't even always about sex - it's often about coming back to the basics. If you can't have conversations about likes and dislikes with low-stakes topics, talking about sex in your relationship is going to be 10x harder. Samantha talks about defining sex and figuring out what's right for your specific relationship as a way to navigate this often difficult topic, especially when one has a chronic pain condition.

Show notes
Tyler runs a free monthly consultation group for therapists who are interested in this work and for those being trained in CA. To sign up, go to https://www.constructedawareness.com/ and look for the "Constructed Awareness Free Consultation.” The next one is May 12, 2022, and you don’t need to be trained in CA to attend, so definitely check that out. You can find all of Tyler’s trainings here as well.
A few extra things to note here: Therapists, if you want to join Tyler’s next Constructed Awareness training, it’s May 6-7 and 20-21 in 2022. Use the code Destyin winters for $200 off.
And for everyone, Tyler gave some good book recommendations at the end. If you want to read more about the science behind pain, check out Unlearning Your Pain by Dr. Howard Shubner. I also really like Freedom from Pain by Peter Levine.
Tyler also has a 2-day training for purchase on his website called What Are You Noticing Now? Integrating EMDR and Constructed Awareness. That will be on July 22 and 23rd.

Jennifer is working hard to build a real, tangible network of people with chronic illnesses so that no one ever has to feel alone again. You'll hear her talk about matching mentors with people who need it the most, who can help people learn to be assertive and stand up for themselves in doctor's offices. It's a much-needed service that I don't see others doing.

Rachelle Friedman LCSW is an Arizona-based therapist serving people with chronic pain and chronic illness. She shares her own experience with POTS, EDS, and MCAS in this episode, truly giving insight into what it's like to constantly feel like you have to fight to be heard. She talks about responding from trauma and how that impacts our relationships with our doctors. Her main goal is to help clients take charge of their lives in an ableist world - no easy task! She gives some really great, concrete examples of how to live with hope and calm instead of from a place of trama.
You can find Rachelle on Instagram and TikTok @brainsocialworker
