3Q: Recent Episodes

Rachel Vogel

We've all been there. You take 30 to 60 minutes out of your day to listen to an interview in hopes of hearing something you've not heard before; something that will truly impact you and your career. The interview ends and that's all you've heard is one more story about how someone got started in their career or climbed the corporate ladder. Important? Yes. Impactful? Not always.

What differentiates the 3Q podcast from all others is that it will never take more than 15 minutes of your time and every guest will be asked to respond to the same three questions.

I started my career 16 years ago working for the band Linkin Park as an assistant at their company Machine Shop. My first jobs included being a receptionist, office manager, personal assistant, and whenever needed – tech support. Before long I started interacting with their fans online via messageboards and chat rooms and worked closely with their management to support the band’s digital marketing initiatives. I started the band’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts and was eventually promoted to Digital Marketing Manager where I ran the band’s socials, growing them to over 50M combined followers in just a few years, and conceptualized and executed digital campaigns for various albums, singles and tours. Eventually the band brought me on tour where I coordinated nightly fan club meet and greets. I also helped conceptualize and produce unique fan club events all over the world. In 2013 I made the leap to their record label, Warner Records, where I joined the digital marketing department. In my 7 ½ years there, I worked with artists including Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, Michael Buble, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Liam Gallagher, and many more. In 2020 I moved over to Elektra/Fueled By Ramen/Roadrunner where I’ve worked with Twenty One Pilots, Brandi Carlile, Slipknot, Alec Benjamin, Gojira, and more. In 2022 I was promoted to Head of Digital Marketing at the company.

About Tyson:

Tyson Haller is a promotion executive with over 20 years of experience in the music industry. During that time he’s gained a broad knowledge of the opportunities for business growth and the promotion strategies that generate success. He’s enthusiastic, personable and perceptive and has been recognized for his creativity and persuasive interpersonal communication style. After two internships in college, one at Atlantic Records in Chicago and the other at Virgin Records in London, in addition to also holding three part time jobs during school in the music field, assistant manager at a record store, director of hospitality at a concert venue and Elektra college rep, he landed his first job at Elektra Records in NYC as an assistant in the Tour Marketing Department. While still at Elektra, he moved on to doing College Promotion and later transitioned to Virgin Records to also run their College Promotion Department. He was quickly promoted to be Virgin’s New York local where he dealt with some of the biggest radio stations in the country across all formats like Z100, WLTW, K-Rock, Hot 97, WPLJ and WKTU. Wanting to grow into a National role, he left Virgin to start the radio department at Warner Music Group’s new incubator label EastWest. This was where his ability to quickly develop new relationships with radio was tested. With a list of unknown artists to work and no major label catalog to bring him credibility, Tyson created a reputation for being an analytical and strategic thinker. After some early radio successes with Pepper and Nightmare of You EastWest merged into ILG and his department grew. Now overseeing a team of four, he led the department to multiple Top 5 and Top 10 records at Alternative and Rock radio with tracks from Cake, Silverchair, Sevendust, Middle Class Rut, Beware of Darkness and Tantric to name a few. ILG would later became the Label Services Department at ADA, where Haller led the promotion department in some of ADA’s biggest successes at radio to date, including Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘s “Thrift Shop,” Arctic Monkeys, Stone Temple Pilots and The Wombats. Following his role as head of radio, he rose to lead the entire Label Services team in the U.S., where he oversaw marketing, publicity, digital marketing, playlist promotion, video promotion, sync & licensing and radio promotion. During that time, the department saw the rise of new artists Lil Dicky, Madeintyo and Caye. Following ADA, Tyson went to Concord as VP of Promotion and within a year was promoted to run the department as SVP/Head of Promotion. During his tenure as head of the department, the promotion team achieved ten #1 records with bands such as iDKHOW, Seether, The Pretty Reckless, Korn, The Offspring, Ghost, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Rise Against. Also during that time, the company became the #1 label at rock radio for the year and a Top 10 label at Alternative radio. Tyson is currently SVP, Promotion & Artist Strategy at Shelter Music Group where he works alongside the company’s team of managers to assist in artist development, as well as, create, drive and support multiple radio campaigns across the roster.

About Connor:

Connor Lawrence is the cofounder & COO of indify, the investment marketplace for independent music, a platform that gives emerging artists with traction the ability to raise funding from strategic investors in a fair and equitable way.

In 2015, when he was still a college student, Lawrence helped develop the first iteration of the company, which began as an industry-leading artist discovery tool used by major labels like Atlantic, Interscope, RCA and more to identify rapidly-breaking artists in the new quick-moving digital landscape. Lawrence oversaw the creation and distribution of the service’s editorial newsletter, which showcased major artists like Khalid, Billie Eilish, and Post Malone long before they reached the mainstream. At its peak, newsletter subscribers included over 10,000 senior-level music industry executives and decision-makers.

Over the past seven years, the cofounders have evolved the indify product into the investment marketplace tool it is now, with Lawrence leading the company's internal operations and strategy and helping independent artists secure over $2.5M in funding and driving over 1.8B streams – providing options and creating long term careers for independent artists around the world.

In 2020, Lawrence was honored as one of Rolling Stone's “Future 25,” the annual list showcasing the next generation of music industry innovators who are pushing the business forward.

About Talya:

As Co-Founder and CEO of Godmode, Talya Elitzer enables artists to alchemize vision into culture. Drawing on label and agency experience, she remains entwined with every aspect of the Los Angeles- based artist development company, record label, music publisher, and management collective. Hailing from Upstate New York, she embraced music as a kid, picking up piano at four-years-old. While attending Brandeis University, she landed an internship at William Morris Endeavor. Upon graduation, she rose through the ranks from the mailroom to a gig as a booking agent with the likes of Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Grace Jones, and LCD Soundsystem under her purview. Eventually, she moved over to Capitol Records where she worked in A&R on projects such as Beck’s Morning Phase and Katy Perry’s Prism. In 2017, she applied this acumen to the launch of Godmode with Co-Founder Nick Sylvester. The genesis of Godmode can be traced back to popular parties and gatherings in Brooklyn, but it evolved into a dynamic projection of what a modern music company can be. The collective gradually grew as it powered the rise of GRAMMY® Award-nominated Channel Tres and JPEGMAFIA with hundreds of millions of streams, sold-out tours, and widespread tastemaker praise. At the same time, the team introduced the likes of LoveLeo and Yaeji to audiences everywhere. 2021 saw Godmode build its publishing arm in partnership with Hipgnosis Songs Group, signing EMMY at the ground floor. Standing out among a handful of female CEOs in the industry, Talya's own accolades and journey have been chronicled by Variety, Authority Magazine, and Music Business Worldwide.

About Lynn:

Starting from the bottom as a receptionist at MCA Records, Lendway quickly worked her way into the A&R department assisting the VP and Director of A&R. With great support from her bosses, she was fast-tracked to a Manager of A&R and became a fixture in the NYC music clubs. After a shake-up at the label, Lendway took the opportunity to move into artist management working with legendary rock superstars, KISS. While working with the band as Label Liaison, Recording Manager & Tour Coordinator, she experienced artist management and the ins and outs of touring at the feet of the masters. Not wanting to leave NYC when the band relocated their home office, Lendway found an opportunity for herself at Zomba Music (parent company of Jive Records) building their new producer management arm until a friend lured her away to become booking manager at the world-renowned recording studio, The Hit Factory. The education she received at the studio was invaluable and, having developed a passion for managing music producers, when given the opportunity to lead the producer division at a management company, she jumped at the chance. With this new position, she was able to manage her own stable of producers until she finally broke off and started her own producer management company.

During this time, Lendway was urged to jointly manage a developing rock band and she decided to accept that wildly thankless task. Interestingly, though thankless, it’s also the most creative position she had ever held. Managing a well-known band is hard work but it’s easy to get people to answer the phones. Developing artists is a challenge. During this time, she was also able to find significant funding to start an independent record label and co-created and co-produced a TV series for the IFC network starring the band she co-managed.

As the financial market turned, the label investors decided to cut and run and the TV series was wrapping up its run, in a tale as old as time, the band broke up shortly thereafter, so Lendway found herself once again in the major label system as Sr. Director of A&R at Sony Masterworks and then VP of A&R at Decca US / Verve Music Group / Universal working with classical, adult contemporary, and Broadway artists as well as film score composers, and movie soundtracks, and Broadway cast albums. As the pandemic gave everyone to pause and shone a bright light on the changes in the music industry, like so many, Lendway reevaluated her circumstances and went back to running her own business. Currently, she’s focused on developing artists and creating partnership opportunities between music-focused and music adjacent businesses.

About Laurel:

Before partnering with Primary Wave, Laurel Stearns for a year and a half-built a small roster at Prospect Park(The Firm) with Red Fang, Father John Misty, White Denim and Jenny O. Laurel spent 8 years at Capitol Records, 3.5 years at Red Light Management and 6 years as an independent manager. During her tenure at Capitol Records, Laurel ushered in bands such as Interpol, The Decemberists, Shout Out Louds, Fischerspooner, Sparklehorse, and LCD Soundsystem. During her tenure at Capitol Laurel realized there were many bands that she was passionate about that belonged nowhere near a major label. With two partners, launched Cold Sweat Records/Caroline. From that label, No Age(WIVES), Battles, Health, Devendra Banhart, Yahowa 13, and many others were discovered and released. Laurel along with 3 others, opened the LA office of Redlight Mgmt, brought The Decemberists and Alberta Cross, and worked on Chris Cornell’s solo effort.

As an independent manager, Laurel managed: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (Mammoth), The Descendents, ALL(Epitaph), GWAR(Metal Blade), The Paladins (4AD) Plastilina Mosh (Capitol). Laurel helped develop fan bases for these bands with branded tours & creative marketing ideas (ie: comic book in-stores for GWAR, shows on cruise ships for Dirty Dozen Brass Band, The Descendent’s “Caffeine Nation Tour” – which did not allow any beer sponsors or corporate posters in the venue, etc.), An orchestra tour with The Decemberists (largest audiences the band had played to). Earlier in her career, Laurel also scouted for The Sony WORK group, where she was involved in the album set up for artists such as Fiona Apple, Jennifer Lopez, Jamiroquai & Eagle Eye Cherry. Currently managing: U.S. Girls (4AD/Beggars), Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (Ghostly Int/Secretly Canadian), Red Fang (Relapse/Orchard), The Album Leaf(Nettwerk), The Session aka Christian James Hand
