Welcome to “The Search.” The purpose of this program is to explore the proper method of examining the Bible to discover its meaning. We believe that the meaning of Scripture is synonymous with the truth and that loyalty to Christ involves the relentless pursuit of that meaning—both to know it and to be transformed by it.
Psalms 93-99 are all about God's reign as King. Psalm 96 sit at the heart of this collection, and Psalm 100 serves as a kind of postscript. Find out what they reveal to us about the rule of our Sovereign Lord.

The ancient Israelites believed that YHWH held supremacy over all the other gods for a variety of reasons. Two of those reasons are discussed in Psalms 95 and 97: one, that YHWH is the creator God, and two, that YHWH has, at times in history, powerfully manifest His personal presence.

Moses, the man of God, was well known for his passionate intercessory prayers. It is fitting then that even after his death, the people of God would turn to him for prayers on their behalf. This seems to be exactly what Psalm 90 is intended to accomplish--to channel the intercession of Moses for the people who have been beleaguered by the exile.

Psalm 87 is one of several Zion songs which celebrates God's city. Psalm 87 is, however, a bit unusual in that it speaks of Jerusalem as a kind of mother city which has birthed the nations and is drawing them back to itself.

The exile was a time of despair. The prayers of the people were directed towards God, seeking rescue and salvation. Psalm 83 fits that mold but also contains a bit of a twist regarding how the psalmist viewed the judgement of God upon the nations.

The children of Israel had much to learn from their own history. The failures of the Exodus generation should have served as a constant reminder of the need to be loyal to God. The people of Judah endured a season of despair and doubt following the destruction of Jerusalem. They were convinced that their God had been defeated and they did not understand why. However, in Psalm 75, a word comes from the Lord which says, "I choose the appointed time; it is I who judge with equity" (75:2). Psalms 75 and 76, therefore, are about the certainty of God's judgement.
The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Babylonians was a major blow to the people of Judah. To them, it seemed that their God had been defeated by the god of Babylon. In the following years, they struggled to understand how Yhwh could allow such a catastrophe, and Psalm 74 is one of the psalms which ponders this mystery.
It is difficult to continue to believe in the goodness of God when facing the evils and challenges of the world. Asaph, the author of Psalm 73, experienced his own personal struggle over whether or not God is truly good to Israel. Find out what he concluded in this lesson.

Sometimes the emotional distress of the psalmists is so intense that they cry out for God to hurt and even kill their enemies. These imprecatory psalms can be difficult for Christians to read, especially in light of the teachings of Jesus who said that His disciples should love their enemies. In this section of Deuteronomy, Moses begins outlining the stipulations which will govern the relationship between God and His vassal, Israel. This will include a recap of the Ten Words, the famous Shema, a prohibition against marrying Canaanites, and more!

When Moses encountered God at the burning bush he asked what God's name was that he might report back to Israel who exactly had sent him. From that conversation onward, the revelation of the name of God has been one of the Torah's central themes. Let's talk about God's name and its significance in this special study.
Let's get into Deuteronomy, the fifth and final book of the Torah! Deuteronomy is a collection of speeches delivered by Moses to Israel before his death and it has a unique place in the Old Testament.

It's finally time to leave Sinai! After a year encamped around the holy mountain, God leads the people towards the promised land. Tragically, however, the men sent to spy out the land convince the people of the impossibility of the conquest. Clint and Shahe examine this important moment in Israelite history in this podcast.
The name 'Numbers' sounds pretty boring, but this forth book of the Torah is actually quite thrilling. Numbers documents Israel's movement towards the promised land in three geographical areas: Mt. Sinai, the Wilderness of Paran, and the Plains of Moab. In this episode, we wrap up Israel's Sinai experience, learning about Israel's camp, the Nazirite Vow, and the role of the Levites.

In today’s discussion we conclude our survey of Leviticus by examining some of the laws given to Israel as well as the purpose behind them. We also consider the meaning of the sacred feasts and holy days which dotted the landscape of Israel's calendar. We’ll be taking next week off before we begin our survey of Numbers, the fourth Torah book.
Leviticus 11-15 is perplexing for modern readers. It deals with various conditions Israelites would encounter in their daily lives which would bring about a state of uncleanness. Before Israelites could approach the Tabernacle, they had to remedy their uncleanness through waiting periods, washings, and special offerings. So what exactly is going on here and what is the teaching behind cleanness and uncleanness?
Having established the purpose of Leviticus and the system of animal sacrifices, we now move to the only historical section in the third book of the Torah which recounts the ordination of the priests. Aaron and his sons are set apart for sacred service and at first, everything goes exactly as God intended. Tragically, two of Aaron's sons offer something which the LORD had not commanded and God responded with immediate judgement.
We now turn our attention to Leviticus which sits at the literary center of the Torah. Leviticus focuses on answering this important question: how can a holy God dwell in the midst of a sinful people? This question became all the more pertinent after the Golden Calf rebellion. Much of Leviticus focuses on the sacrificial system at the Tabernacle, so let’s discuss the function of these offerings in God’s program.
From time to time , Clint and Shahe plan to pause in their Scripture surveys for reflection. Today’s episode offers all of us a chance to consider the message of Genesis and Exodus and further elaborate and reexamine some of the concepts proposed about how these important books should be read.
Today we finish our survey of Exodus. Clint and Shahe focus in on two prominent themes which dominate this section: what exactly is the Tabernacle's function and purpose, and why is Moses so concerned about God's presence being among His people?
The children of Abraham have finally been delivered from Egyptian slavery. God plagued the land through the work of Moses and Aaron. Having established the conditions of Israel in Egypt, the call of Moses, and the important theme of the name of the Lord, the stage is fully set for God's miraculous hand to deliver His people from bondage. We'll discuss the nature of miracles, the function of the plagues, and the extreme importance of the Exodus event.

Genesis ends with Israel’s sojourn to Egypt. Exodus opens a few generations later to a time when the life-saving work of Joseph has been forgotten and the Israelite population has exploded. The new Pharaoh turned against the children of Abraham, setting the stage for the work of God in ordaining Moses and redeeming His people.
Putting the life of Abraham behind us, we turn our attention to his offspring. The second half of Genesis deals with God's work with Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. The book concludes with the family's migration to Egypt which was all part of God's plan.

It's time to talk about Abraham! The heart of Genesis is all about God's call of Abram to leave his family and country behind. Abram follows the Lord and spends the rest of his life in service to the One who promised him land, a nation, and to be the fountainhead of blessings upon the whole world.
Why is the story of Cain and Abel even in the Bible? Who are the sons of God and the Nephilim in Genesis 6? What happened during the flood? Why was the tower of Babel such an affront to God? These questions and more are discussed by Clint and Shahe as they survey Genesis 4-11.
The first three chapters of Genesis are foundational to the entire Biblical story. Clint and Shahe tackle some of the challenging questions pertaining to this text like how should one read the creation account, what exactly was Eden, what does it mean that humans were made in God's image, and why is the tempter identified as "The Serpent" in Genesis 3?

Today we begin our Scripture survey journey by introducing the first five books of the Bible often referred to as the Torah. We will focus on three primary and important questions: what is the Torah, how do these five books fit into the larger Bible story, and who wrote them?
