In July 2002, John McMullen became the first Director of Talk & Entertainment Programming at SIRIUS Satellite Radio. He also had the distinction of being the first Sirius-original talk show host and station manager when he created their political left channel Sirius Buzz, and LGBTQ channel Sirius OutQ. As the marquis host of the John McMullen Show, he interviewed hundreds of newsmakers, entertainers, authors, journalists, and community leaders. He also was the anchor, executive producer and logistics manager for major special events broadcasts on Sirius that included political conventions, election nights, extended breaking news coverage, and sports and arts/cultural festivals. On this 13.5 minute example, you'll hear clips from from a couple editions of his 3-hour daily current events program that include conversations with U.S. Presidential candidate and former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, star of stage, screen and song actor/playwright/musician (and human rights advocate!) Harvey Fierstein, and the notorious homophobic (now-deceased) pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps. There is also a testimonial advertisement that was part of the first automotive industry campaign on Sirius which McMullen secured with Subaru in 2004. He was a national LGBTQ community spokesperson for the brand until leaving the company in late-2006.
