Well, we lost a plant, the Wedding cake cannabis plant. There is a whole house drainage system and the plant was placed right on top of it. Yes, I warned my buddy this would be an issue if the drain worked but I should had foresaw this issue raised the pot up on to a pallet or 2x4s.

With the excess rain and water from the drain the plant's soil became anaerobic and fried the plant. There was fungus gnats but they were not exactly the cause of what killed the plant but definitely speed up the dying of the plant. Basically, anaerobic conditions allowed the ph to decrease to where the plant was being fried. Luckily this was a localized event and the other plants did not see a extreme water event, although it has been 12 days since I watered these plants. Hopefully, everything dries up this week!

This spring in Eugene sucked! Record breaking rain, lack of sun, low temps and excess bugs did not benefit us this year. All the plants stayed pretty heavy in flower this spring due to lack of sun I am assuming. We are about to see summer turn on like a switch being turned on. 80 degree to upper 70 degree weather with no rain for the foreseeable future!

I definitely have experienced some heavy blows recently from a failed compost pile, prolonged winter, a dead plant but I think its just apart of the learning experience. Gotta learn to be humble, take accountability and correct course in a positive manner.

We have been dodging major bullets here. Spending the extra money on living super soil and being selective with our composts has really saved us from this horrid spring, in my opinion. We are still cutting close with the excess moisture but I feel we will be ok. I even rigged up a fan my buddy put out there as well as further opening up the greenhouse to allow more fresh air flow.

Well it has been a very busy week for me in ways. My compost pile failed as it did not maintain temperatures for long enough. I will wait a month or two before starting another pile to wait for the creek to dry up, environment to dry up and to be able to use more diverse materials while avoiding manure.

I became very lethargic and still have some lingering effects from the raw horse manure and stress. I ordered some Ivermectin and will start a little horse deworming cleanse in hopes my energy levels and mental clarity gets to be what it was before playing with raw horse manure a few weeks ago.

A few days ago, I top dressed the plants with two different kinds of compost, azomite (a broad spectrum mineral supplement that is high in silica) as well as a new mulch layer of barley straw. I then followed that up with a foliar treatment of kelp and fish hydrolysate.

The weather here in Eugene, Oregon is brutal. This no sun and lots of rain thing is not really ideal for growing anything much less Cannabis but despite the challenging weather the Girls in the Greenhouse are thriving! Note that when filming the video the sun just came out of the clouds for the first time today.

It has been a while since my last garden update. The food crops are doing ok. They are under going pest pressure but still growing. The record breaking amount of rain and colder than average temps with no sun has not helped the food garden. My buddy Scott is planting some plants today and will fill up the side of his yard with plants that just got new soil.

The compost is barely doing good but it is 48 hours into the 72 hour cycle the hot middle needs to be at, 131+ F. I will talk more about this tomorrow or the next day. Looks like I will be good though, just if it gets lower than 131 F it is a fail. This may still fail so it is nerve wrecking.

The cannabis? Well that is rocking hard!

It's go time! I am finally getting to composting. Under the guidance of the Soil Food Web mentor, I gathered all necessary materials. I used a 40 - 5 gallon bucket method to ensure I had proper ratios of each material needed.

I need approximately 60% carbon material, 30% green material (Nitrogen) and 10% High Nitrogen Material.

Easy enough right? Not if you do not have a truck but maybe if you live in a neighborhood full of the needed materials!

The 60% carbon material I used was wood chips, which I took care of gathering a couple of weeks ago! However diversity is key and that I lack in my materials. Each material was essential from a single source.

I was stressing about the green materials. I needed approximately 14 - Five gallon buckets filled and packed tight. Well, like some sort of miracle or answered prayer the city of Eugene came and cut ample amounts of grass in the city easements in which I was granted permission to gather the clippings from!

Before I gathered my High Nitrogen Material I needed to soak my materials over night in Five Gallon buckets to ensure the woodchips and grass had enough moisture for the Thermophilic compost pile I was making the next day. Yes, draining the excess water in the morning.

Did I mention my High Nitrogen source was going to be fresh horse manure? Well yeah it is. Luckily, I found a local horse manure source where the horses were not treated with deworming medications as that will impede microbial growth. My mentor told me to go a little heavy on the High Nitrogen materials so that meant I needed 7 gallons of manure....😅 Naturally, I wanted to wait till the last possible second to get this horse manure in the morning!

The horse manure made making this pile not as fun. The clumps of horse manure was extremally fibrous as these horse were grazers strictly from what I remember. Dried chicken manure might had been more Ideal but so for the Compost pile is looking really good as far as temperatures go. At 24 hours it is at 118 degrees F.

Making the pile took me 4 hours and just as much time to clean the white 5 gallon buckets! The pile stands at 4.5 feet tall thus far.

This was so exhausting. I even had to start cleaning buckets early this morning before the soils arrived... Yup fun times work, work work!

My buddy had his soils delivered directly to where we need the soils. So no wheel borrowing! He added 40 tons of loam soil and top dressed with 3 Cubic Yards of organic material that was amended from Lane Forest Products. We then added some clover seed and organic barley straw on top of the seed after watering them in.



This is a pretty interesting project from @ecoinstant called Ecobank! I loved the info graphic used! Maybe one day this will becoming widley sucessful and help individuals who might need help developing future projects centering around sustainability in a dynamic way!

Well, it has been a little under a week or so since I gave these girls some compost tea. The weather is much more agreeable for the week forthcoming as it looks like we will have 70-78 degrees F for the week. Thank goodness because these girls are LOVING the Sun after a cold, cloudy and wet spring with below average temperatures.



Tomorrow I need to apply some store bought Nematodes from Down To Earth Eugene. They will serve as a bio-control for some tiny green caterpillars and possible thrips that are starting to attack the weaker food crop plants outside of the greenhouse, note no bug problems in greenhouse other than some flies that do not want anything to do with the soil. These flies probably were living in the bare soil next to the greenhouse, that as of today has been covered with organic barley straw.

Nematode application is more ideal when a polysaccharide, which is produced from the aerobic bacterias in the compost tea (https://www.caister.com/polysaccharides) , is used as a substrate when spraying them. So today I will start to brew a compost tea.

Yesterday, I applied compost tea as a foliar spray to the cannabis in the greenhouse and outside of it on the food crops. I gave each cannabis plant compost tea a gallon or so of the tea as well directly into the soil. We also added barley straw as a top cover mulch for the greenhouse plants and plants outside of the greenhouse a few days ago.

Everything is loving it! I went over the soil analysis I did last week for the soil for our Mango Kush with my Soil Food Web school mentor and he was surprised at how far ahead I am with the microscope and the decent amount of prey-predator interactions in the soil ie protozoa eating bacteria, nematodes eating nematodes and bacteria but most importantly no real concerning pathogens, or rather large numbers yet. Which by the way I minted an NFT of a Bacterial Omnivore Nematode over at @nftshowroom and it includes an unlockable MP4 video file of the nematode.

My school mentor said even with the low fungi numbers the high amount of predator prey interactions I have is almost more important and since I have that I will see great results... If I continue on a bi-weekly regimen of Compost Extracts and a biweekly treatment of compost teas. Essentially weekly treatments of some form of a compost input.

I did a soil assessment for the Mango Kush today. I took soil 6" from approximately the base of the plant. I used a apple corer. This is what I saw under the microscope. Note, 2 videos did not make it into the edit for user error.

The first 25 or so minutes is the nematode scan. I tried doing a trick with the lighter to slow them down but eh they ran off each time. I need to get faster during the nematode scan process but it is fun still following the nematodes to identify them.

First was the Nematode scan. Using the 10x (100x total magnfication) objective I scanned for nematodes.

At 06:45 minutes and 14:04 minutes I spotted a couple of nematodes and switched my objective from 100x total magnification to 400x total magnification to better identify each one (all measurements and identifications come from the 400x total magnification). I will be making NFTs out of the nematode pictures here so be on the look out for sexy nematode pics and look for them over at @nftshowroom in the near future. I will include other unlockable files when purchasing them. Thanks for verifying me over at Nftshowroom @juliakponsford!

My dilution ratio was higher than it should had been for this sample. I used a dilution factor of 1000 (Main assessment was a dilution factor of 5), probably should had used a dilution factor of 500. My slide might need to be replaced as the scratches can be easily seen. This is a headache as they come with indents and scratches.

So I observed the readings here from the Mango Kush soil sample and inputted what I observed into an application called SMApp, Soil Microscopy application.

As far as I can tell there are no bad/pathogenetic first off. The Fungal:Bacterial ratio is still way off but still increasing fungal numbers. We hope to add mulch and mushroom grain in the soil too to help remedy the fungal numbers and duh cover the soil to prevent evaporation and compaction etc. We have a crap load of beneficial protozoas!

Today, I took a soil sample from the Mango Kush Cannabis 50 gallon fabric pot in the greenhouse out back. This plant is the most vigorously growing plant in the greenhouse. It was further along in growth than the other clones we got back here and cost twice as much. The temperatures are still below 70 degrees F but should rebound next week.

I ended up spending three days making 5 gallon batches of compost extract and applied it to everything in the back yard and front yard except for the lawn.

We were also gifted some Mint, Aztec beans, hula berries, Mullein and Tarragon starts from my buddy's friend.

The above video is a practice run of a compost analysis I did. The first few minutes is the bacterial scan at 400x with a dilution factor of 1000. Then the rest of the video is the main assessment which is also at 400x but with a dilution factor of 5. I saw no Nematodes during the 100x(10x Objective) nematode scan.

The compost was from Earthfort. It was cool finally grabbing some bags of this compost from Earthfort and also driving with Patches and Scott to get the compost!

Test Results

The results show a compost with really nothing to worry about as far as pathogens first off. The bacteria levels were pretty high with virtually no fungi, though I did see fungal spores. I did see exceptional amounts of protozoas in the form of amoebas and flagellates comparatively to the the compost I got from the last company.

I am still a novice at this thing so who knows what I really saw here. I seem to still be having issues with my microscope's image getting blurry mid way through an assessment. I thoroughly clean these lenes but perhaps the 100% humidity fogs up the slide and lenes easily...

Next, I gotta do a zoom meeting with @dynamicrypto while sharing the microscope video to be sure I am ready for the microscope class appointment on Monday.

Since I knew it would be raining for the next 5 days with cold temperatures, I took advantage of the lone 73 degree (F) for the week with some pictures and a video of the cannabis plants in all their glory.

It has been about 3 weeks since transplanting them back here. Despite the colder and wetter than normal temperatures here in Eugene, Oregon, these girls are taking off nicely!

My buddy Scot is doing a great job here. He has taken my advice on key things like where to buy the soil, compost, cover crop seeds and even where to buy his vegetables (at the farmers market duh!). He has been doing the majority of caretaking with these girls. My thing is to help him with physical labor type stuff ( Wheel borrowing soil/compost etc.) and implement a compost regimen ie compost extracts, teas and monitoring soil life with a microscope.

I am finally getting into to full on school mode. I am studying 5-7 hours a day this past week. I need to be able to identify the Microorganisms in a fairly fast manner and efficiently too. I have one or two days of studying these organisms and then I will be doing a lot of microscoping, I am half thinking I need a week of really practicing hands on with the microscope before contacting the assigned soil food web mentor that will be certifying me with the microscope and compost.

I recommended this book, that Dr. Elaine Ingham wrote the most of, in order to help ease a person curious about microbiology in to it.

Taking a break from my studies, I strolled around the yard, took a video and some pictures of the development of the place I have been helping my friend with. It is still cold and raining here. 2/3s of the way done with spring and it has just been cold and wet...

But first, we have a new roommate...

Her name is Patches and she identifies as a Human... The Cover Crop is growing in but the Clover is slow to take off due to very low temperatures but is still sprouting regardless.

The Cannabis plants are seemingly rebounding ok despite the cold cloudy days, which is a relief.

Oh, yeah we have strawberries already!

The fruit trees out front have virtually no pest pressure since compost applications over past month. Their blooms and deeper greens leaves are great things to observe! Also the front yard lawn and bush looks great after the compost applications as well!

Kinda cool I am back at the computer studying because I am finding cool new music...

Foundation Courses. Ch. 1 Lecture 5: What Went Wrong: The History of Agriculture

Lecture 5 addresses how we got here, with regard to current problems and crises in farming (and ecology), and considers a brief history of agriculture and agricultural practices. An examination of the movement of materials, organisms, water, air, etc., through the Soil Horizons. Dr. Elaine’s™ Soil Food Web Approach to fertility, based not on Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium values or concentration of organic matter, but based on the Fungal:Bacterial ratio and associated predators.

Tillage Tilling using a plow and then beginning of the 19th century, tractors was what destroyed the biology in soils before chemicals were introduced. Even in 1000 BC they would plow once a year but would still destroy the life in the soils even with minimal tillage. Eventually organic matter would be depleted. As the organic matter starts to be depleted, the food to feed the micro-organisms were is lost and the soil life decreases. The only thing left is Bacteria. The bacteria will multiple rapidly in this instance.

Bacteria will blow off carbon dioxide. Bacteria are inefficient because they do not need the carbon. The bacteria needs 30:1 C:N ratios and not 5:1 ratio for food sources. This will deplete the food sources for fungi.

Manure and poorly composted compost would be applied to help this process in the past through out human history. However, manure from animals is mineral heavy and salts will build up. Soil would compact and weeds would become abundant. Through out history civilizations would collapse due to inability to produce food.

Mechanical tractors allowed for more acres to be tilled more often. They believed they were controlling weeds but created more and more weeds. inorganic fertilizers were applied as a result.

Why did we think the Green Revolution worked? The beneficial organisms were destroyed already in the soils from tillage, toxic chemicals and inorganic fertilizers.

All inorganic fertilizers are salts. Extra moisture and water is needed to break down the salts. Salt is anything that has a - and + charge. Water will be come ineffective when brought into contact of the salts. Example is when humans drink salt water.

If you see an instant response from an inorganic fertilizer, the nutrient cycling system is broken.

Soil Horizons * O1 Horizon- Recognizable plant debris

+ O stands for organic.
+ Plant debris fall to the soil
+ Bacteria and fungi breakdown debris into waste products
+ true humus is produced
  • OH Horizon- Dark brown humus (OM organism)

    • Organic Humus
    • No sand silt or clay yet
    • A Horizon- Add sand, silt clay to OM, organisms; color and depth depends on how much humus moves into top layer of soil

    • Organic material is moving into this layer, depends on rain, leeching and earthworms.

    • Earthworms can go up to 20 feet into soil in very health systems.
    • Earthworms act as carriers for the materials in this layer and layers above to lower layers.
    • B Horizon- Less humus movement by water, fewer organisms, roots

    • Color changes to lighter color

    • C Horizon- Much less OM, but is this sterile?

    • There are organisms here. Not sterile in a healthy system. Organisms like earthworms carry life (biology) down here.

USDA Thought that tilling deeper was beneficial. Each time we tilled we created compaction layers. So over time we thought we needed to till deeper and deeper over time.

  • 1940-1950 - 4 - 6 inches
  • Late 1970's - 12- 18 inches
  • 1994 - 4 feet

Tillage equipment should only be used in extreme conditions.

Undisturbed Soil * We want undisturbed soil so the root systems can go as deep as they want to go. The Soil horizon layers become less deep.

Soil Profiles * Soil profiles or rather soil horizons become slightly different in different climates. All still require soil life to develop.

Ch.1 Lecture 4: Plant Physiology & Biochemistry



Ok, the previous posts I included more information about reference links and more detailed course descriptions than I probably should have. This is the 4th post on the 27 part lectures from the foundation courses that I have been doing. These posts are meant to encourage others to purchase these courses to further their education on regenerative agriculture by showing that it is possible to pass them, help myself refer back to these note as well as help myself learn better by typing everything out.

The growing cycle of plants.

Source Winter or the season that is less active if for example you are in a tropical environment. (Dormant period)

All nutrients are stored in roots. As temperature and moisture becomes more optimal the nutrients are then mobilized into new growth for the plant.

  • Phosphates are stored in root membranes.
  • Nitrogen is stored in roots as a protein.
  • Potassium is stored in cell walls of the roots.
  • Carbon is stored as a starch in the roots.

Spring

As it starts to warm up the Plant will start to make compounds to help start to mobilize nutrients. New growth is concentrated with nutrients that was stored in roots. Typically high C:N ratios are found in plants in the beginning of spring ie 10:1 instead of 30:1 (The ideal ratio for C:N we want in plant tissues). As plant start to grow the C:N ratio in plant tissue will even out. Root system will start working on nutrient cycling process.

Summer

Plant will start to form flowers. The shoots for the plant that are forming flowers typically will have 60:1 C:N ratios in tissue as opposed to the flowers which will typically have 30:1 C:N ratios. Depends on plant species. The seeds will have more priority given to them over other parts of the plant and will allocate more nutrients to the seeds than other part of the plant, this will cause disease and pests if nutrient cycling is not being implemented properly during this phase.

Fall

Plant will start to get ready for the dormant season and start to reallocate nutrients back into the roots. When this happens the C:N ratio of the plant tissue typically has a 150:1 - 200:1 ratio. Dead leaves will fall to the ground and the wide C:N ratio of dead leaves will be fungal food.

How far down into the soil can the roots go? The plant DNA will determine how far down the plant roots can go. Having good structure to the soil is influential, compaction caused by humans is typically a limiting factor. Will have weeds if soil is compacted. Trees will compete with grasses and shrubs. Well structured soil will prevent compaction, disease and weeds. Common misconception is if cutting off tops of plants will cause the roots to drop off, this is incorrect. Exudates will be released by the plant into the soil for Fungi and bacteria for nutrient cycling to regrow plant. Cutting tops of plants, like mowing or grazing too soon, will stress the plant though and cause unnecessary disease and pest pressure.

If you are seeing disease in a plant it will typically be from lack of root structure/depth, soil structure and most importantly soil biology ie fungi, bacteria, and predators and prey from soil food web.

Anerobic organisms will produce alcohol in soil that will attract pests like slugs and snails.

If a plant is lacking nutrients it will be due to soil structure limiting the root growth.

Nutrient Availability * Conventional Theory

Source Agronomists will say that as the root hairs is working it will release carbon dioxide from the root system then the carbon dioxide interacting with water will cause a release of a hydrogen ion. Slightly acidic soil will happen when you produce carbonates and then a hydrogen is released then will go to a soil particle. The hydrogen will cause a cation that was bound up by a negative site on the soil particle to be released into to the root system. This is not exactly correct and incomplete, There is a more modern way to view this. This does not explain where the nutrients are coming from. If you have a lot of a bacteria and fungi in your soil then this will process does not happen.

Without biology pH is the sole factor for nutrient uptake. Add Biology back into the soil than nutrition is no longer controlled by chemistry.

This lecture continues to explore soil chemistry and how to accurately assess and measure soil chemistry and biology; accurate measures and assessment are fundamental prerequisites to be able to prescribe appropriate remedial treatments and adjustments.

A Video for all you Cannabis growers out there that goes over some of what is discussed here in this post. Scott is a notable Soil Food Web Graduate. Since of course Cannabis is the most popular cash crop out there.

This Lecture was very information dense. A lot of what I took notes on here was not necessarily important for passing the quiz. However, still is needed to know and important to understand when approaching future projects/ growers who depend on the information from these soil tests that are conducted. If you have been following along you will have remembered that it is all about balancing out our fungal:Bacteria levels more so than not in our soils.

Choosing the right assessment tool * Plate Counts * Used to determine numbers of individuals of one or more species or genus.

+ Will not tell you total numbers of all the individuals of all the different species
+ No food resource or mixture of food resources to supply all of the micro-organisms
+ The temperature varies for each micro-organism, so not ideal
+ Humidity levels vary for each organism, not ideal
+ Oxygen levels vary once organisms rapidly multiply, also not ideal. Pathogens thrive in limited oxygen environment.
+ Shows more anerobic organisms and **not aerobic organisms** due to lack of oxygen
+ To determine what healthy organisms are missing or needed we need to know what **aerobic** organisms are missing.
+ **Can still be used but use it to determine pathogens; anerobic organisms. Inappropriate for total species or activity.**

  • Shadow Microscopy

    • CO2 absorbing chemical with a pH indicator is used so color change can be related to CO2 taken up.

    • Typical pathogens release methane and not CO2. Will not determine amount of pathogenic micro-organisms
    • CO2 absorption + Enzymes
    • Add food or not?

    • Enzymes react with substrate, measure initial and final amounts of substrate.

    • Disturbance reduces numbers and kinds of organisms
  • Chloroform Fumigation

  • Used to determine Organism Numbers

    • Fumigation is supposed to kill all the organisms in the sample, but this will not be the case unless the sample is spread very thinly, which means severe disturbance impact on the organisms.
    • All the dead organisms are supposed to now be used by the remaining living organisms. But the chloroform killed everything so how can living organisms still be present?
    • How much of the total set of organisms we not killed?
    • Temperature, moisture amount of organic matter will affect the results as well.
    • Significant controls are needed but rarely used.
    • Haney Test
    • Used for Nutrient cycling

    • Measure soluble inorganic nitrogen levels at the start and end of an incubation period.

    • Samples incubated in sealed jar will quite likely become become anaerobic, which means inorganic N will be lost as gas when the jar is opened leading to underestimates.

  • There is no one value listed above that determines/ describes soil quality.
  • Depends on the type of plant you want to grow.

  • What does mineralizable mean?

    • Means taking organic form of a nutrient to a mineral form
    • Converting from an organic form to an inorganic form
    • Understanding the biology is key. Mistakes are often made because of this.

Soil Chemistry Definitions * pH is the negative log of the H+ concentration + pH is not the amount of calcium but rather hydrogen ions + Neutral pH or pH occurs at H+ = OH- where both are at a concentration of 10 to the -7(log number) power

  • Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is a measure of the ability of all surfaces such as but not just sand, silt, clay and organic matter surfaces to hold and release cations.

    • Base saturation is also another word for CEC
    • Ability of a soil to hold and exchange cations

    • ions are atoms with an electrical charge

    • Negatively charged colloids (organic matter and clay) attract and hold cations.
    • Is the total amount of cations that a soil can retain
    • The higher the soil CEC the greater ability it has to store plant nutrients.
    • Soil CEC increases as the amount of clay increases, amount of organic matter increases and when the soil pH increase.

    • the more organic matter that is added to clay the less concerned we are with our CEC in clay.

    • Proteins (organic matter) have CEC. Can hold nutrients.

    • Clay usually has the highest capacity

    • Sometimes only one Clay or thousands of different minerals. So measuring all is important.
    • Only positively charged ions looked at. Really only four of the positively charged ions, Calcium. Magnesium, Potassium and Sodium. Other positive ions are in the soil so not best way to measure soil.
    • Negatively charged colloids (organic matter and clay) attract and hold cations.
    • Biology examination is a easier way to interpret samples.
    • Better development of microscopes helped measure soil eventually
    • We needed shadowing microscope. Bright field microscopy was previous method
    • Bright field microscopy was not effective because the density of bacteria and fungi is the same as water. Was not able to see organisms.
    • The shadow allows for us to see organisms
  • Electrical Conductivity is the ability of a volume of material to transmit electrical current.

    • Expressed as Siemens per cubic meter or milliSiemans per cubic cm.
    • Be careful about the units of measurements. Measures volume.
    • When taking samples you mix the samples to make uniform. Destroys the variability of soil conditions.
    • Measures the current not the difference between - and +
    • Mis reading of actual salts in sample can happen.
  • Acids, Alkalis, and the pH Scale

  • pH is Hydrogen and Hydroxide ion concentration

    • Alkaline = higher concentration of hydroxide
    • Acidic = higher concentration of hydrogen
    • As you add more hydroxide that hydroxide binds with the hydrogen ion and takes hydrogen ion out of solution so now you might have water instead.

Base Saturation * is the Percentage of the soil exchange sites (CEC) occupied by the four particular cations, potassium (K+), Magnesium (Mg to the +2 power), calcium (Ca to the +2 power) and Sodium (Na+) * Ca:Mg affects the way Clay platelets arrange themselves: collapsed, flocculated, dispersed.

+ A clay soil with too much Ca acts like dust, repels water
+ A clay soil with too little Ca collapses and compacts
+ 6:1 ratio is desirable for most clay soils in North America
+ If ammonium is low then be sure to increase the fungi in soil so the nitrates can be converted to ammonium
+ High iron can tell you that your soil many many years ago was anerobic. Will need enzymes to help convert to plant available form.
+ Need a organic matter level of 3% to have a healthy biology in the soil.

This Lecture was extremely frustrating. But fortunately the Quiz was not that hard. Watching the lecture over and over again was very very helpful!

These are the notes that I took from the Chapter 1, lecture two part of the Foundation courses from Elaine Ingram's Soil Food Web Online School. These notes are very thorough but you really do need the actual lecture and access to the forums to be able to complete these end of lecture quizzes. I have to watch these lectures over and over again and even while taking these quizzes. There is a, as they call it in the forums, analytical way the questions are presented.

Where do plants get their nutrients? * All but two nutrients come from the soil

  • Plants only need 2 nutrients from above ground -- Carbon Dioxide and Energy from the sun.

  • Plants take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and separate the carbon atom from the double-bonded, two oxygen atoms. The plant then keeps the carbon atom to use in forming all of the carbon compounds present in the plant tissue. The plant releases the oxygen atoms back into the atmosphere as a waste compound of this process.

  • The energy fueling this process comes from sunlight. The plant uses this energy to pull apart the carbon atoms from the oxygen atoms. This process is called photosynthesis.

Root exudates are in the form of carbohydrates, including sugars, and proteins. Amazingly, their presence wakes up, attracts, and grows specific beneficial bacteria and fungi living in the soil that subsist on these exudates and the cellular material sloughed off as the plant’s root tips grow.

The specific beneficial bacteria and fungi living in the soil then begin to extract nutrients from the Soil/ Mineral components and Organic matter. Protozoa and Nematodes then consume the Bacteria and Fungi, their poop then becomes nutrients that are released in soluble plant available forms to the root zone.

  • All organisms in the soil are critical

Testing total pools for nutrients requires grinding soil to a dust, adding concentrated nitric acid to soil, combusting and then adding chemicals.

Testing has different extracting chemicals/ oxidizing agents involved for each nutrient pool.

Total (soil) pool - Not normally reported

  • All nutrients are present in massive numbers in this pool.

  • 10% HCL, H2HN03

  • Plant tissue tests use the same test method. Best way to measure what your plant is able to uptake from soil.

Clays have more + and - exchange sites but other minerals have less exchange sites.

Mistake to say clays only have + and - exchange sites.

Exchangeable Pool - Ions bound on surfaces of organic matter, sand, silt, clay and organisms.

650 different extracting agents. Each one gives you a different #.

  • Melich 3

    • Strong extraction agent (acid). Most of exchangeable pool and some of total. Hard to interpret.
    • Bray 2

    • Not as strong of extraction agent, Average value

    • Amm Cl/ BaCl

    • Much less ions are pulled off.

Soluble Pool - disolved in water. Plant available nutrients.

1000 different extracting agents for soluble pool. Each one gives you a different #.

Overall there trouble with chemical agent extractions with providing inconsistent data.

All soluble nutrients(inorganic fertilizers) are salts. Takes water away from plant. + and - parts of the soluble inorganic nutrients will become in solution. Easily washed out of soil with rains or irrigation. Kills beneficial organisms.

The Water molecule has a polar positive and negative charge. Salt molecule (Chemical fertilizers) has a ionic positive and negative charge.

Water molecules will bind with the positive charged sodium and also the negatively charged chloride atoms.

Ionic bond is broken with sodium chloride.

Lime is a fungicide and a salt. Will most likely kill more good fungi than bad.

Agronomist Optimum Element/Nutrient Levels

Old Growth forests are able to thrive despite lower than recommended PPM of Nutrients in soil due to a healthy Soil Food Web (bacteria, fungi, micro-organisms, insects, etc). Nutrients are replenished every second of every day.

Typical conventional pastures/growing areas have their soluble(salt based) nutrients washed away with irrigation or rains. So agronomists recommend to use high amounts of soluble nutrients.

Soil Organic Matter Where does it come from?

  • Dead plant material
  • Plant exudates
  • Bacteria and fungal decomposition
  • Waste material from organisms

Simple to Complex Organic Matter

  • Bacterial

    • Exudates or photosynthetic organisims makes sugars. When a nitrate molecule is pulled into the plant or micro-organism and puts a NH2 group onto the carbon can it change your sugar into an amino acid
    • Sugar - Unbranched (simple) Carbon Chains (favorite food of bacteria)
    • Amino Acids - Unbranched sugars with N (NH2) (nitrate or ammonium)
  • Bacterial and Fungal

    • Protein - 1-10,000 amino acids, branched and other nutrients (every protein group has a NH2 group and also all types of nutrients)
    • Lipo-polysaccharides - Branched PO4 (multiple sets of sugars, makes membranes and cell walls)
    • Hormones - Long protein chains, cyclical (Carbons form a circle instead of chain)
  • Fungal

  • Fungi makes enzymes that can penetrate complex structures

    • Ulmic acids - Highly branched (complex with carbon rings), rings (high in molecular weight)
    • Fulvic acids - More highly branched (complex with carbon rings); tan color
    • Humic acids - Extremely branched (complex with carbon rings), complex brown color ( 100+ fulvic acids linked together)

Condensation - Release of waste by bacteria and fungi, as they grow, they start linking those wastes together.

Simplest sugars

  • Two-three Carbons. Bacterial foods

Carbon to Nitrogen Ratios C:N The ratio of the number carbon atoms relative to the number of Nitrogen atoms gives clues to several important factors in growing plants.

  • Is the balance of C and N within the plant tissue correct?
  • Is the plant stressed? If C:N ratio is off then yes it will be. 30:1 C:N ratio is ideal.
  • Is the organic matter better fungal food or bacterial food?
  • How rapidly will the organic matter decompose, if the correct bacterial and fungal species are present? Are predators present to release (nutrient cycling) soluble nutrients?

The plant itself will strongly influence C:N ratios by the exudates it releases and the root cells it sloughs.

  • Molasses

  • Simple Amino Acids
  • Simple Proteins (not bra

Micro-organisms: Appearance and Function Morphology - Deciding Characteristics. What do they look like?

Function - What each groups does.

Active - Actively metabolizing organisms (respiring, making enzymes, producing wastes) that meet criteria for ID of that group. Subset of total organisms present.

Total - All the organisms that meet the criteria, includes: Extremely to Not very active, Moribund, Dead but ID can still be made. No dormant stages included. Total organisms are looked at when analyzing organisms. Time course studies are used if we need to know what the total biomass/# organisms is growing or being used. Stains can be used. We look at total organisms often because its easier to look at and cheaper.

The Amount of Species or Individual organisms Why?

A high number/ diversity of species means all the functions of that group will be performed; a low number means the plant will suffer. Lots of individual species active is needed to do their jobs. These organisms need to be aerobic.

Numbers vs Biomass * Largest organisms on the planet are fungi and bacteria are the smallest organisms. * We need to know Biomass, not numbers. * largest organism on planet is 20 miles in diameter and 25 feet into soil. Fungus in the Olympic peninsula. Fungus will always be larger than bacteria always. * Nematodes and protozoa we will count numbers due to size differential with each species of such.

400x magnification is needed to look at soil biology * Ciliates eat bacteria, can see bacteria inside body. tiny hairs on outside of body. * Bacteria will look like rods and round circles. They will make glue and stick together acids into an aggregate structure. Form massive wall around the plant roots. * Fungi can be seen with naked eye. 100's of strands of fungal hypha make up the visible fungus. * Nematodes can be identified by mouth. if they are parasitic or beneficial. * Bacteria and fungi form a massive wall around roots because plants feed them. * Protozoa and nematodes are attracted to the large number of their prey (bacteria and fungi) release nutrients * Because nutrients are so much higher in bacteria and fungi in their predators, excess nutrients are released, but in plant available forms

In this section, Elaine Ingham teaches us about: * Definitions of Soil * Soil Components * How Soil becomes Dirt * Case Study Examples

Because Cannabis growers seem to be the most common type of grower we might run into on Hive and in life, I will include this Future cannabis project youtube video as well on the difference between soil and Dirt. @skylinebuds

There is a difference between Dirt and Soil. We learn how micro-organisms and organic content is the key difference between Soil and Dirt. The one consistent is mineral content. By adding organic content and micro-organisms, to dirt we can make anything fertile again or rather into soil!

What is Soil? There are two definitions.

  • Hans Jenny, the father of Soil Science says there are three main components that make up soil:

1- Minerals: Sand, Silt, Clay

2- Organic Matter

3- Aerobic Organisms (Anerobic Organisms will kill your plants)

  • Chemical Industry trained Scientists and people with the Green Revolution states that Soil is:

1- Minerals: Sand, Silt, Clay, all properly balanced

  • Inorganic, soluble, minerals (NPK) must be added to this inert support matrix to supply plants with nutrients.

What are the Soil mineral components? i.e. soil texture:

  • Sand - 0.05 - 2 mm
  • Silt - 0.002 - 0.05 mm
  • Clay - less than 0.002 mm (Same size as bacteria. Clay has jagged/sharp edges. Bacteria has smooth edges)

We need perennial cover crops to prevent weeds and to also maintain the soil biology. Tilling of the Soil is the most common way used by farmers and gardeners alike to manage weeds. Tilling will destroy the microbiological life in soil and reduce crop production significantly.

In this lecture we learned how there is plenty of nutrients in any soil. Lack of microbiological life and tilling of the soils has caused famers and gardeners to use fertilizers that leach into our water tables and destroying the life in the soil in the process. There is no need use fertilizers at all when adding microbiological and organic content back into the soil.

Replenishing the biological life in your soil can keep you producing with your cash crop indefinitely while also increasing your yields. Typically in conventional farming methods there are periods of time (Fallow) where crop production is limited or not happening but not when using The Soil Food Web methods created by Elaine Ingham. Elaine has used her Soil Food Web methods to produce cash crops in 95% sand when conventional chemical scientists have said it was impossible. The organic matter and microbiological life can turn any soil texture in any combination of mineral, sand, silt, and clay, into a growable soil medium. The biology added to your dirt/soil will create structure for you as a grower/farmer.

Quiz after each lecture I need to get a 70% overall on all the quizzes after each lecture in order to receive a certificate of completion. However, if I get a 90% overall for all the quizzes after each section I can continue on to the consulting program of the Soil Food Web School! This was the reason I stopped taking the classes last time; I was getting 7 out of 10 questions right and not 9 out of 10 questions. Let's see how I did on the first quiz.

It is not the 90% I was aiming for but still 85% is still amazing and I can still push forward to get an overall 90% on all the Quizzes I still need to take. The School will even work with me to bring up my scores after I complete the entire Foundation Courses if needed.

I also got this really cool amethyst rock from @earthpurse777. This rock really cleared up some thoughts for me as my covid toes healed up. I Think I had some lingering bad Vegas vibes I brought up here to Boise and to be honest after I got this Gem for my Birthday I clearly saw how perfect Boise was to heal, relax and go back to school. Two- Hive Hoodies and a Hive beanie!

I was refunded for these hoodies since Fedex lost them in the mail. I took it as a sign to not lean on Hive as heavy and chill on it. I recently made my Vaccine story public just to encourage those who have lost their job to a vaccine mandate to come forward and tell their story as well as get some of these interesting new tokens. Yeah, I was also doing so to support @kennyskitchen with a token project he had been telling me about for weeks leading up to an announcement for donations of $ANTIVAX token on the BSC Charts wallet app. There was concerns from some people that this may be a rug pull or a simple meme coin but I found out it was not!

Anyways, the antivax people are legit! Just for sharing my story, I ended up getting 100 Binance:usd coin instead of antivax token as they wanted the money to go to my bills. I was blown away and did not expect that much at all. I was just looking to get some free $ANTIVAX token, not 100 usd worth of crypto. Cool. So I invested half back into $ANTIVAX coin and I will use the other half to pay some bills or help others who share their story about how they lost their job due to vax requirements on Hive with Hive donations. My bills are luckily around $800-950 usd a month so I can help others who need it by paying this donation that I received forward or with my Hive investments, blogging and now with this bigger than expected donation it will allow me to pay the bills that much easier this month.

I am just more stoked that this project is not a scam and more than just a meme token! I can now share this story and know that there is a chance other people can be better helped that needs it by sharing their story! I have to be honest, I was not excited about going back to work for a company and Union that put me through a 18 month NLRB battle and honestly probably was not going to go back to work for them anyhow after being illegally fired and assaulted at work. Yeah, I settled with them and got my job back but a text message from my employer saying I need a vaccine to return to work was it for me; I was for sure not going back to work. Any thoughts about returning to work for my employer was out the window, especially after learning from elected officials at my union hall via phone calls that there was nothing they will do for people who do not get the vaccine and can not work as a result.

Also, I am not asking for donations past upvotes on Hive posts you feel is deserved. I have some money coming to me at the end of this month, allegedly as it has been stuck in probate. I will use said money for school and to pay bills for the year. So hopefully I can finally stop cashing out Hive as I transition to a new career through schooling and getting a small inheritance.

I am trying to trust people and be apart of a healthy community. But anymore I am happy still being a hermit and being around happy people. Going to the store is nice and interacting with people is nice out here in Boise, Idaho. People are nice here. Don't know been looking at maybe staying here long term. Eh Who knows only if crypto/Hive takes off then maybe I can see living here. But still wanna find my way to a farm. Always connected to plants and animals better than humans. So yeah just interesting. I come from an area of the world where the homeless population is 2.5 times as great as the entire homeless population of Idaho. I literally had a homeless guy blow his hand off, with a fire work, in front of my house in Vegas just last year. Just something weird I donno.

This town is tripping me out when looking into the stats. There really is no comparing my experience in Vegas to anything here. People keep telling me the murder is crazy here in Boise or how bad the homelessness is here and how it is so much better it is in Las Vegas. I guess only because Starbucks employs people for 20 an hour there... The housing is about the same in Vegas. But homelessness and crime is exponentially higher there. A lot of people I encounter have no idea how messed up Vegas is but tell me they want to live there??? Seems like any time I mention Vegas I hear a I wished I lived there. from whoever I talk to.

Listening to people and understanding I am in some interesting world where 2 murders and 700 homeless people is a crisis is tripping me out. Probably a reason such low numbers for murder and homelessness is because the community cares. Or murders are reported differently here lol.

Anyways, freaking weird town for me but I love it. Maybe too small of a town for me. Maybe one day I will retire here or if Hive takes off lol.
