BuckeyesNow is the Ohio State Channel on Sports Illustrated's FanNation network. Hosted by Brendan Gulick, Buckeye Breakdown addresses all the latest news and information regarding the Ohio State Buckeyes - with a heavy emphasis on covering Ohio State football.
Ohio State won it's first two games against a team that ran the triple option and an FCS opponent that wanted to throw the ball within two seconds of snapping it (after they milked the play clock as far as they could). Tuesday afternoon, Ryan Day and Jim Knowles both admitted that Saturday's game against Western Kentucky will present an entirely different kind of challenge.
With Kyle McCord now officially leading the offense, Ohio State is settling into it's offensive identity for the season. They looked much more comfortable attacking through the air against the Penguins, given a bit more experience from McCord. That said, Ohio State hasn't seen a team with the kind of offensive air-raid philosophy probably since Michael Penix Jr. and the Indiana Hoosiers came to a carboard-cutout filled Horseshoe in 2020. Jim Knowles wasn't in charge of the Silver Bullets at that point, but he certainly saw plenty of pass-heavy offenses in the Big 12.
Knowles made a couple of notable admissions to reporters on Tuesday around his coaching adjustments away from an ultra-aggressive defense in order to give his secondary a better chance to prevent big plays from leaking over the top. That was OSU's Achilles heel in 2021 and 2022 in losses to Oregon, Georgia and twice to Michigan.

As he does every Tuesday, Ryan Day will meet with the media to reflect on last week's performance against Youngstown State and begin looking ahead to Western Kentucky. At this point in the season, nearly every question Day is asked revolves around the Buckeyes - he's rarely asked about the team that they're playing the coming Saturday.
Here are the questions we most want answered from Day on Tuesday (although we aren't sure how straightforward of an answer we are going to get):
- What is the solution with the offensive line? It almost looks like they are stuck in camp mode mentally. He's made it clear he thinks the issues are correctable, but last week didn't really show a ton of improvement and their opponent was unquestionably inferior compared to Week 1. How will the coaches approach offensive line rotation?
- On the defensive line, as much as Western Kentucky wants to throw the ball, this should be a week that unit could get on track. What is it going to take for a pass-rushing group that we've heard so much about to make a significant impact?
- Is Day finally ready to plant a flag in the ground and say this is Kyle McCord's team? Or is he going to continue the QB competition this week and give Devin Brown reps during meaningful moments in the game? And how is he evaluating McCord's development?
- What constitutes a successful outcome this week in Day's eyes? Obviously the goal is to win convincingly. But what does that need to look like so he feels like they are firing on all cylinders before the team travels to Notre Dame next week?

After 3 months of undefeated football, the Ohio State Buckeyes completely fell apart in the second half against Michigan on Saturday and lost their rivalry game, 45-23. Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Columbus following Ohio State’s second-half collapse against Michigan.
Ohio State welcomed Michigan back to Columbus for a winner-take-all battle at Ohio Stadium, but the “revenge game” this was billed as turned out to be heartbreaker for Buckeye Nation.
The Wolverines outmatched the Buckeyes this afternoon with a quick strike offense and balance that were difficult for Ohio State to match. The game opened up as a shootout early, which looked to favor Ohio State, but as the battle continued into the second half, Michigan began to slow the pace of play and forcing the Buckeyes into mental mistakes and penalties that put the team behind-the-sticks. The limited possessions of the third quarter allowed the Wolverines to establish a ground attack that struggled to get going in the first half, and the Wolverines took a 24-20 lead into the fourth quarter, which they wouldn't relinquish.
Ohio State had opportunities to come back into the game late, as Jake Moody missed a 57-yard field goal attempt that gave the offense a short field to work with midway through the fourth, but the Buckeyes were unable to finish drives in the pivotal moments down the stretch. Donovan Edwards put the nail in the coffin for Ohio State with two late touchdown runs of 75 and 85 yards.
Michigan now sets its sights on the Big Ten Championship game, while the Buckeyes await their postseason fate.

It's been a long year, but it's finally time for the Ohio State Buckeyes to try and avenge last year's gut-wrenching loss to the Michigan Wolverines. Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Columbus following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ huge 56-14 win over Indiana. Ohio State returned home to a snowy Ohio Stadium after two consecutive road games, and maybe home-cooking was all the Buckeyes needed to rebound from a close-call last week at Northwestern. The running game deficiencies that had plagued the team in recent weeks disappeared this afternoon, as the they gained 340 yards on the ground. Miyan Williams accounted for 145 of those yards and a touchdown in the first half before being carted off with a leg injury. Xavier Johnson scored on an impressive 71-yard run and Dallan Hayden also hit pay dirt, giving the Buckeyes three different runners to score a touchdown. C.J. Stroud looked much more comfortable in the pocket today than he did last week, throwing for 297 yards and five touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. continued his jaw-dropping play with a few more highlights to add to his season-long reel, and finished the day with seven receptions for 135 yards and a 58-yard touchdown reception. Lathan Ransom and Tommy Eichenberg led the way for the Buckeye defense. Ransom finished second on the team in tackles, adding 1.5 sacks and a blocked punt, while Eichenberg recorded three tackles-for-loss. The Buckeye defense as a unit was outstanding situationally, holding the Hoosiers to 3-for-18 on third and fourth-down conversion attempts. The Buckeyes look ahead to their final two games of the regular season, and face-off against Maryland next Saturday before a meeting with Michigan on Nov. 26. Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ sluggish 21-7 victory against the Northwestern Wildcats.
It wasn’t a pretty victory by any stretch of the imagination in Evanston for Ohio State today, as they struggled to establish consistent offensive production all game against Northwestern. The weather was a major storyline, as gusts of over 50 mph made it difficult for either team to throw the ball.
The Buckeyes once again found it difficult to move the ball on the ground, and outside of a 27-yard touchdown by Miyan Williams in the third quarter that gave the Buckeyes the lead, their situational execution on short-yardage third and forth downs left more to be desired. They ended the game with 202 rushing yards, but it wasn’t a dominant performance on the ground. TreVeyon Henderson was out of the game after missing practice all week with a foot injury, and his presence was missed as the Buckeyes turned to C.J. Stroud to provide a secondary spark in the running game. He proved to be effective, highlighted by a 44-yard run down the right sideline in the fourth quarter. Williams capped off that drive with a touchdown, and the Buckeyes held on to win.
Northwestern relied heavily on their running game, gaining 206 yards on the ground and out-gaining Ohio State by a slim 285-283 margin overall. Brendan Sullivan only attempted 14 passes all game, and exited late with an injury.The offense frequently shifted in the wildcat formation with Evan Hull taking direct snaps; Northwestern had success with this early, but as the game entered its later stages, the Ohio State defense adjusted. J.T. Tuimoloau flashed on a few notable plays yet again this week, nearly intercepting a pass in the first quarter and recording a tackle-for-loss.
The Buckeyes now turn the page to next Saturday’s matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers in Columbus.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Happy Valley following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ resilient 44-31 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. In a game that had wild twists and turns, Ohio State survived an upset bid from Penn State this afternoon. A tight contest throughout, key contributions from Marvin Harrison Jr. (10 receptions, 185 yards) and J.T. Tuimoloau (6 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles-for-loss, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown) paved the way for Ohio State to flip the script late in the game. TreVeyon Henderson took over as the Buckeyes’ primary running back after Miyan Williams exited the game in the first half with an injury. He scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a 41-yard touchdown that gave Ohio State the lead, 23-21. The Buckeyes never relinquished that lead, and ended up opening the gap quickly with 2 touchdowns in 34 seconds and a game-clinching pick-six by Tuimoloau.

After struggling to find their rhythm in the first half, Ohio State’s offense proved to be too much for the Iowa defense as the game progressed and the Buckeyes once again coasted to victory.
C.J. Stroud turned it on in the third quarter, finishing the game 20-30 with 286 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns and an interception.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba started the game but left early in the first half after he looked to aggravate his hamstring injury.
The Buckeye defense was stellar, only allowing 158 total yards and forcing 6 turnovers (most by a Buckeye defense since 2016 vs. Tulsa.) They added a touchdown to the scoreboard as well, as Tommy Eichenberg found pay dirt on a 13-yard interception return in the second quarter. Tanner McCalister added two interceptions of his own, and Zach Harrison’s presence off the edge was felt all game long.
Ohio State will face Penn State next Saturday, October 29, at 12 p.m. ET.

Pace joins the Brendan Gulick from the Hall of Fame after we had the opportunity to play with him during the Hall of Fame annual golf outing at Firestone Country Club in Akron, which is one of the most storied golf courses in the country.
This is a must listen for Buckeye fans! He shares some really cool perspective on his journey from his Sandusky, Ohio roots, to his time in Columbus, to his NFL career and blocking for the Greatest Show on Turf before wrapping up his journey in Canton.

TreVeyon Henderson set the OSU freshman rushing record with 277 yards, leading the Buckeyes to a 41-20 win over Tulsa. The game at times lacked the spark that Buckeye fans are used to seeing from a national championship-caliber product, but Ohio State took care of business and played a much more aggressive defensive style in the second half.
