Ohio State won it's first two games against a team that ran the triple option and an FCS opponent that wanted to throw the ball within two seconds of snapping it (after they milked the play clock as far as they could). Tuesday afternoon, Ryan Day and Jim Knowles both admitted that Saturday's game against Western Kentucky will present an entirely different kind of challenge.

With Kyle McCord now officially leading the offense, Ohio State is settling into it's offensive identity for the season. They looked much more comfortable attacking through the air against the Penguins, given a bit more experience from McCord. That said, Ohio State hasn't seen a team with the kind of offensive air-raid philosophy probably since Michael Penix Jr. and the Indiana Hoosiers came to a carboard-cutout filled Horseshoe in 2020. Jim Knowles wasn't in charge of the Silver Bullets at that point, but he certainly saw plenty of pass-heavy offenses in the Big 12.

Knowles made a couple of notable admissions to reporters on Tuesday around his coaching adjustments away from an ultra-aggressive defense in order to give his secondary a better chance to prevent big plays from leaking over the top. That was OSU's Achilles heel in 2021 and 2022 in losses to Oregon, Georgia and twice to Michigan.

Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin discuss what the heard from both coaches on Tuesday and why it matters as the Buckeyes set the tone for the remainder of the season.

It's all straight ahead on Wednesday morning's edition of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast!

As he does every Tuesday, Ryan Day will meet with the media to reflect on last week's performance against Youngstown State and begin looking ahead to Western Kentucky. At this point in the season, nearly every question Day is asked revolves around the Buckeyes - he's rarely asked about the team that they're playing the coming Saturday.

Here are the questions we most want answered from Day on Tuesday (although we aren't sure how straightforward of an answer we are going to get):

  • What is the solution with the offensive line? It almost looks like they are stuck in camp mode mentally. He's made it clear he thinks the issues are correctable, but last week didn't really show a ton of improvement and their opponent was unquestionably inferior compared to Week 1. How will the coaches approach offensive line rotation?
  • On the defensive line, as much as Western Kentucky wants to throw the ball, this should be a week that unit could get on track. What is it going to take for a pass-rushing group that we've heard so much about to make a significant impact?
  • Is Day finally ready to plant a flag in the ground and say this is Kyle McCord's team? Or is he going to continue the QB competition this week and give Devin Brown reps during meaningful moments in the game? And how is he evaluating McCord's development?
  • What constitutes a successful outcome this week in Day's eyes? Obviously the goal is to win convincingly. But what does that need to look like so he feels like they are firing on all cylinders before the team travels to Notre Dame next week?

Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin address all of that and more on Tuesday's edition of the Buckeye Breakdown podcast!

Ohio State's defense took a major step forward in 2022 under Jim Knowles. The expectation is that the second year with his system should be even better, as the Buckeyes try to eliminate the big plays that ultimately ended their national championship hopes last year. Indiana's offense needs some work and this should be a good opener for the Silver Bullets.

Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin break down the Hoosiers by position and detail what schemes they'd most like to run given their personnel, as well as how the Bucks can stop them.

It's Tuesday morning of Ohio State's first game week of the year, so it's time to go Behind Enemy Lines to take a good look at the Indiana Hoosiers. What challenges do they present? Where are they vulnerable? Ohio State is a heavy, 4-touchdown favorite in the game, but Tom Allen's team always seems to give the Buckeyes a good fight.

Brendan Gulick and Anthony Moeglin are joined by Jack Ankony of HoosiersNow.com in FanNation network, powered by Sports Illustrated. They'll answer all of those questions and more as we inch closer towards the season-opener!

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Alabama Crimson Tide are both sitting out conference championship weekend, which is certainly unusual given their success as programs. There seems to be some debate on which team should be ranked 5th in tonight's penultimate College Football Playoff rankings.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson weigh in on that, plus a few other topics in the aftermath of the Buckeyes' loss to Michigan this past weekend, including Ohio State's botched fake punt, whether Ryan Day should give up play-calling, Luke Fickell's new job at Wisconsin and The Ohio State University's President Johnson's rather sudden resignation.

After 3 months of undefeated football, the Ohio State Buckeyes completely fell apart in the second half against Michigan on Saturday and lost their rivalry game, 45-23. It was the worst home loss in the rivalry since 1976 and it drained a lot of Ohio State fans emotionally after the Wolverines stampeded their way to victory with a couple of long fourth quarter touchdown runs.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share what they learned from a tough day in Columbus and begin discussing where the Buckeyes go from here.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Columbus following Ohio State’s second-half collapse against Michigan.

Ohio State welcomed Michigan back to Columbus for a winner-take-all battle at Ohio Stadium, but the “revenge game” this was billed as turned out to be heartbreaker for Buckeye Nation.

The Wolverines outmatched the Buckeyes this afternoon with a quick strike offense and balance that were difficult for Ohio State to match. The game opened up as a shootout early, which looked to favor Ohio State, but as the battle continued into the second half, Michigan began to slow the pace of play and forcing the Buckeyes into mental mistakes and penalties that put the team behind-the-sticks. The limited possessions of the third quarter allowed the Wolverines to establish a ground attack that struggled to get going in the first half, and the Wolverines took a 24-20 lead into the fourth quarter, which they wouldn't relinquish.

Ohio State had opportunities to come back into the game late, as Jake Moody missed a 57-yard field goal attempt that gave the offense a short field to work with midway through the fourth, but the Buckeyes were unable to finish drives in the pivotal moments down the stretch. Donovan Edwards put the nail in the coffin for Ohio State with two late touchdown runs of 75 and 85 yards.

Michigan now sets its sights on the Big Ten Championship game, while the Buckeyes await their postseason fate.

It's been a long year, but it's finally time for the Ohio State Buckeyes to try and avenge last year's gut-wrenching loss to the Michigan Wolverines. The Scarlet and Gray had won eight in a row and many fans didn't expect last year's loss to happen, which left a particularly bitter taste in the Buckeyes mouths.

This time around, with the changing landscape in College Football Playoff (and certainly in the Big Ten), it's fair to wonder if this is the last time this game could have stakes THIS high for the biggest rivalry in sports.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share their thoughts and preview the game on Buckeye Breakdown!

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Columbus following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ huge 56-14 win over Indiana. Ohio State returned home to a snowy Ohio Stadium after two consecutive road games, and maybe home-cooking was all the Buckeyes needed to rebound from a close-call last week at Northwestern. The running game deficiencies that had plagued the team in recent weeks disappeared this afternoon, as the they gained 340 yards on the ground. Miyan Williams accounted for 145 of those yards and a touchdown in the first half before being carted off with a leg injury. Xavier Johnson scored on an impressive 71-yard run and Dallan Hayden also hit pay dirt, giving the Buckeyes three different runners to score a touchdown. C.J. Stroud looked much more comfortable in the pocket today than he did last week, throwing for 297 yards and five touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. continued his jaw-dropping play with a few more highlights to add to his season-long reel, and finished the day with seven receptions for 135 yards and a 58-yard touchdown reception.  Lathan Ransom and Tommy Eichenberg led the way for the Buckeye defense. Ransom finished second on the team in tackles, adding 1.5 sacks and a blocked punt, while Eichenberg recorded three tackles-for-loss. The Buckeye defense as a unit was outstanding situationally, holding the Hoosiers to 3-for-18 on third and fourth-down conversion attempts.  The Buckeyes look ahead to their final two games of the regular season, and face-off against Maryland next Saturday before a meeting with Michigan on Nov. 26. Join Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind as they break down all of today’s action.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ sluggish 21-7 victory against the Northwestern Wildcats.

It wasn’t a pretty victory by any stretch of the imagination in Evanston for Ohio State today, as they struggled to establish consistent offensive production all game against Northwestern. The weather was a major storyline, as gusts of over 50 mph made it difficult for either team to throw the ball.

The Buckeyes once again found it difficult to move the ball on the ground, and outside of a 27-yard touchdown by Miyan Williams in the third quarter that gave the Buckeyes the lead, their situational execution on short-yardage third and forth downs left more to be desired. They ended the game with 202 rushing yards, but it wasn’t a dominant performance on the ground. TreVeyon Henderson was out of the game after missing practice all week with a foot injury, and his presence was missed as the Buckeyes turned to C.J. Stroud to provide a secondary spark in the running game. He proved to be effective, highlighted by a 44-yard run down the right sideline in the fourth quarter. Williams capped off that drive with a touchdown, and the Buckeyes held on to win.

Northwestern relied heavily on their running game, gaining 206 yards on the ground and out-gaining Ohio State by a slim 285-283 margin overall. Brendan Sullivan only attempted 14 passes all game, and exited late with an injury. The offense frequently shifted in the wildcat formation with Evan Hull taking direct snaps; Northwestern had success with this early, but as the game entered its later stages, the Ohio State defense adjusted. J.T. Tuimoloau flashed on a few notable plays yet again this week, nearly intercepting a pass in the first quarter and recording a tackle-for-loss.

The Buckeyes now turn the page to next Saturday’s matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers in Columbus.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are two thirds of the way through an unbeaten regular season and it seems like they have three very winnable games on the schedule before they host Michigan on November 26. But college football is a funny game and the weather forecast on Saturday in Evanston doesn't look very good. Could that somehow derail OSU?

Northwestern won its opener against Nebraska, but has lost seven games in a row since then. What's their plan for trying to stop the Buckeyes?

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share their thoughts going into Saturday's showdown on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Buckeyes got a really good test from a high quality opponent on Saturday, which they ultimately passed with a 44-31 win. But how did the game leave you feeling? Are you more or less confident in their ability to win the league and eventually win a national title? What did we learn from this game? Plus, C.J. Stroud's fourth quarter number in his career are RIDICULOUSLY good (way better than I would've initially thought).

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Happy Valley following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ resilient 44-31 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. In a game that had wild twists and turns, Ohio State survived an upset bid from Penn State this afternoon. A tight contest throughout, key contributions from Marvin Harrison Jr. (10 receptions, 185 yards) and J.T. Tuimoloau (6 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 tackles-for-loss, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown) paved the way for Ohio State to flip the script late in the game. TreVeyon Henderson took over as the Buckeyes’ primary running back after Miyan Williams exited the game in the first half with an injury. He scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a 41-yard touchdown that gave Ohio State the lead, 23-21. The Buckeyes never relinquished that lead, and ended up opening the gap quickly with 2 touchdowns in 34 seconds and a game-clinching pick-six by Tuimoloau.

Ohio State is undefeated through 7 games this season (as many expected them to be), but their schedule hasn't proven to be as difficult as we thought coming into the season. Notre Dame, Wisconsin and Iowa have all achieved below expectations so far.

Now, the Buckeyes head to Happy Valley to play a Penn State team that has certainly punched at their weight class - and perhaps even a bit above. Penn State is 6-1 with just a loss to Michigan on its schedule and they rebounded with a big win over Minnesota last week.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share their preview of the game and their score predictions on today's Friday preview show on Buckeye Breakdown!

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis from Columbus following the Ohio State Buckeyes’ huge 54-10 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

After struggling to find their rhythm in the first half, Ohio State’s offense proved to be too much for the Iowa defense as the game progressed and the Buckeyes once again coasted to victory.

C.J. Stroud turned it on in the third quarter, finishing the game 20-30 with 286 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns and an interception.

Marvin Harrison Jr. (7 receptions, 62 yards, 1 touchdown), Emeka Egbuka (6 rec, 80 yards, 1 touchdown), and Julian Fleming (79-yard touchdown reception in fourth quarter) all contributed in the victory. Jaxon Smith-Njigba started the game but left early in the first half after he looked to aggravate his hamstring injury.

The Buckeye defense was stellar, only allowing 158 total yards and forcing 6 turnovers (most by a Buckeye defense since 2016 vs. Tulsa.) They added a touchdown to the scoreboard as well, as Tommy Eichenberg found pay dirt on a 13-yard interception return in the second quarter. Tanner McCalister added two interceptions of his own, and Zach Harrison’s presence off the edge was felt all game long.

Ohio State will face Penn State next Saturday, October 29, at 12 p.m. ET.

ET.

The Buckeyes are idle this week, but that doesn't mean the team is entirely taking the week off in Columbus. Ohio State is working on getting as healthy as possible before they host Iowa on October 22 as well as trying to stay sharp because they've got some tough games in front of them.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind share the latest from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center after hearing from Ryan Day and three of his assistant coaches today.

Ohio State absolutely annihilated Michigan State on Saturday afternoon up in East Lansing, 49-20. The game wasn't as close as the score might indicate after the Scarlet and Gray completely hammered Sparty through the air. C.J. Stroud was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after another terrific performance, throwing 6 TD's in a game against MSU for the second straight season.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson watched the tape and now share their thoughts on today's episode of Buckeye Breakdown.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind provide instant analysis following the Buckeyes’ dominant performance against the Spartans in East Lansing.

C.J. Stroud continued to bolster his Heisman campaign, finishing the day 21-26 for 361 yards and 6 touchdown passes. His connections with Marvin Harrison Jr. (7 receptions, 131 yards, 3 touchdowns) and Emeka Egbuka (5 receptions, 143 yards, 1 touchdown) resulted in multiple highlight-reel plays in the victory.

The Buckeye defense was able to lock down the Spartans’ offense for the vast majority of the game, as Ohio State out-gained Michigan State 614-202 and held the Spartans to 7 yards rushing.

Ohio State's Week 6 opponent is one that traditionally has a great program, but their 2022 season hasn't gone very well. Michigan State is next up on the docket and Ryan Day said the Buckeyes are treating this game like its a top-10 matchup because they have so many of the same players as last year's top-10 team.

Hondo Carpenter is the godfather of the Michigan State beat. He's covered the Spartans for several decades and is deeply entrenched in their program. Could Sparty possibly pull off an upset this weekend? Is there buyer's remorse on Mel Tucker? And what is he hearing from NFL scouts about Ohio State's team?

All that and more on this morning's episode of Buckeye Breakdown as we go Behind Enemy Lines!

This week it was a 49-10 beatdown of Rutgers, who only scored when Ohio State gift-wrapped points for them off two costly turnovers. Miyan Williams tied a school-record, Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg played incredible games at linebacker and the Buckeyes continue to look like the top team in college football.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind share their takeaways from Ohio State’s 49-10 win over Rutgers.

Miyan Williams’ huge day leads Ohio State to victory in their Homecoming showdown against Rutgers. The 49-10 win wasn’t always pretty for the Buckeyes, who were missing Jaxon Smith-Njigba, TreVeyon Henderson and other key pieces on both sides of the ball.

C.J. Stroud finished his day 13-for-22 with 154 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, with his top targets Emeka Egbuka and Julian Fleming each grabbing four receptions. Williams was the steady hand for the Buckeye offensive attack, gaining 189 yards rushing to go along with his school-record tying five touchdown performance.

It's just about time to kick off Big Ten play with the Buckeyes hosting the Badgers on Saturday night under the lights in Columbus. C.J. Stroud and company nearly broke the all-time school record for most yards of total offense, but they're going to play a Wisconsin program that has long prided itself on defensive intensity. They lost a lot of starters from last year's team, but that unit was one of the top 5 in the nation in 2021.

Jon Rudder is stepping in to cover the game this weekend for Brendan Gulick, so he joins the Buckeye Breakdown podcast to help preview the game and share his thoughts on Ohio State's solid start to the season.

Ryan Day said at Skull Session on Saturday that he wanted to see a dominant performance from the Buckeyes.

Boy did they deliver.

I’m not sure there’s such a thing as a perfect game. But that has to be pretty darn close as Ohio State nearly broke the all-time school record for total offense of yardage is 77-21 big down of Toledo.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share what they learned from Saturday’s blowout and why it was important as they head into Big Ten play on this morning’s edition of Buckeye Breakdown!

Ohio State just put together one of the most impressive performances in program history together on Saturday night as they annihilated Toledo, 77-21.

C.J. Stroud guided the offense for about 2.5 quarters before giving way to Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. The Buckeyes racked up 763 yards, scored 11 touchdowns from eight different players and for the second time in program history they had three wide receivers surpass the 100-yard mark.

Brendan Gulick and Andrew Lind share their thoughts live from The 'Shoe with their Instant Analysis on the Buckeye Breakdown podcast.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson tell you what to watch for Saturday night, which players they think will stand out on both sides of the ball and give their final score predictions!

Perhaps the most fun part of the beginning of this college football season is that some of the teams in the Sun Belt Conference have played particularly well. Marshall beat Notre Dame and App State knocked off Texas A&M last weekend, so you can be sure that the Buckeyes will be on high alert this Saturday with Toledo coming to town.

In fact, the Rockets last came to Columbus, they gave the Buckeyes a pretty good scare. Ohio State won that game in 2011 27-22, but Toledo actually had the lead until late in the third quarter.

ESPN College Football analyst Ryan Cavanaugh broadcast Toledo's win over LIU in Week 1. He joins Brendan Gulick this morning to talk about the Rockets and give Ohio State fans an idea of what they can expect.

Orlando Pace is one of 10 former Ohio State Buckeyes to be forever enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. He is widely considered to be one of (if not the best) offensive lineman of all-time, and he is so proud to be born and bred in the Buckeye state.

Pace joins the Brendan Gulick from the Hall of Fame after we had the opportunity to play with him during the Hall of Fame annual golf outing at Firestone Country Club in Akron, which is one of the most storied golf courses in the country.

This is a must listen for Buckeye fans! He shares some really cool perspective on his journey from his Sandusky, Ohio roots, to his time in Columbus, to his NFL career and blocking for the Greatest Show on Turf before wrapping up his journey in Canton.

He also shares his perspective on the current version of the Buckeyes, where his son Jalen currently plays and his son Landon is being recruited. He finished by sharing how seriously he takes his responsibility to keep growing the game with fans of all ages.

The Buckeyes are back to work preparing for the Toledo Rockets this week, and perhaps we shouldn't take for granted that the team is 2-0 considering all of the major upsets around college football this past weekend. Several notable national teams saw their College Football Playoff dreams coming crashing down when they weren't well-prepared enough against non Power-5 schools.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share a bit about what they learned from the Buckeyes win over the Red Wolves, as well as what they want to hear from Ryan Day and Jim Knowles when they address the media at 12 p.m. Eastern Time this afternoon.

It wasn't a perfect game by any stretch, but we saw major improvements on offense in Saturday's 45-12 win over the Red Wolves. The offense looked terrific and the defense played reasonably well, but the Silver Bullets had way too many self-inflicted wounds.

Ohio State fans are in for a real treat on Saturday afternoon, as former Buckeye linebacker Joshua Perry makes his way into the Big Ten Network broadcast booth to call the Ohio State vs. Arkansas State game. While he did the OSU Spring Game on the network, this will be his first regular season game since taking over the lead analyst role for BTN.

Joshua was gracious with his time this week as he prepared for the game and we got into a TON of great topics. Many of those include:

  • Why Jim Knowles' scheme is so frustrating for opposing quarterbacks to dissect

  • What is special about Jack Sawyer, J.T. Tuimoloau, Michael Hall Jr. and Tommy Eichenberg

  • What he loves about being able to use both TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams

  • Why C.J. Stroud is an elite QB and how he's evolved during his time as a starter

  • What he's most proud of as a Buckeye football alum and why he's bullish on the future of the program

  • Why College Football Playoff expansion was inevitable, but why he doesn't like the 12-team playoff

  • Ohio State's mindset against a non-Power 5 opponent

For a regular season game, the stakes couldn't be any higher. On the same day that Ohio State is going to honor the legacy of the 2002 National Championship team, this year's Buckeyes are going to take on a top-5 ranked Notre Dame team on maybe one of the biggest recruiting weekends in program history.

In other words: the past, present and future of the Scarlet and Gray are going to locked in on every moment of Saturday's prime time showdown.

Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share their thoughts from the national championship season and why they think this game is so important on this morning's episode of Buckeye Breakdown!

On Wednesday's edition of Buckeye Breakdown, Brendan Gulick and Craig Hyson share their thoughts on what they've heard and felt coming out of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. They touch on Ryan Day's message to his team about the traditions surrounding this game and what it means for the future of the program.

Plus, Cade Stover reveals his favorite Buckeye-to-watch growing up (it's such a perfect comparison it's almost too obvious). And what did Jim Harbaugh compare his quarterback situation to?! Here's a hint ... he said he's taking a "biblical" approach.

But the Buckeyes never REALLY threatened to beat Oregon in the second half and they have a lot they need to address defensively.

Brendan Gulick and Tommy Zagorski unpack some of tough questions from yesterday's game, while also evaluating the impact of the loss and OSU's CFP hopes.
