Rick Bucher had a normal enough childhood, but his life has been extraordinary since. An adventure sports athlete, racer, and instructor, Rick served as a firefighter/paramedic in Scottsdale, Arizona for 27 years. After narrowly surviving a rock climbing accident, motorcycle wreck and a suicide attempt, he went on to receive treatment for PTSD and is now working to increase awareness of mental health issues in the public safety arena. He also went on to find his biological family after decades of unanswered questions about who he was and where he came from. Eliminating the stigma of stepping forward for help and providing support for those who do is his new passion and he tours the country following opportunities to share his story, speaking to groups and spreading a message of hope, resilience and unity in the face of trauma. His story is a remarkable tale of redemption and a reminder of the power of the human spirit.

Jermaine Kemp Sr. I am a compassionate, honest, and loving person, and I believe in helping others whenever I can. This is what drew me to become a firefighter, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in this way. For almost 26 years, I have been in the fire serviceand I currently hold the position of Shift Accountability Battalion Chief. I am proud to say that I am one of the 10 African-Americans who have been promoted to the level of chief during my tenure in the department. While this is certainly an accomplishment worth celebrating, it is also disappointing for me as it highlights the lack of diversity in our department, but I am hopeful for a more inclusive future. I am fortunate to have been married to my lovely wife, LaShonette Kemp for 25 years. Together, we have three amazing children - Aniah, Jermaine Jr., and Alexis. In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, traveling, and golfing. I am deeply inspired by the words and actions of civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. and I believe that their messages are still relevant today. My favorite book is "Untethered Soul" by Michael A. Singer, which encourages self-awareness and inner peace. I am grateful for all of the experiences that have shaped me into the person I am today and look forward to continuing to make a positive impact on the world around me.National Suicide Prevention Hotline 988thewashdownpodcast@gmail.com#NeverAloneAlwaysForward

Steve Gillespie’s career as a first responder, police officer, and a firefighter began in 1983 with his first fatal motor vehicle accident as a seventeen-year-old volunteer firefighter. His paid career as a New York City firefighter began in 1994 before he retired after twenty-one years on the job. He served his entire FDNY career in The Bronx, one of the busiest boroughs of the FDNY. He served on Engine 63, and thirteen years with Squad 41 before retiring in 2015 as a Lieutenant on Engine 43. The Bronx has a history and a reputation of its’ own and spending twenty-one years there exposed him to much tragedy including responding to the World Trade Center tragedy on September 11, 2001, the “Black Sunday” fire, the Deutsch Bank fire, and many others involving the multiple injuries and loss of firefighters and civilians alike. Steve is a respected instructor with experience teaching at the FDNY Probationary Firefighter School, the FDNY Technical Rescue School, and presenting at national conferences such as the Firehouse Expo and the Fire Department Instructor’s Conference, both as a lecturer and a H.O.T. instructor. He is presently a peer team member with the Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team, Inc. and has become a Training Officer with the North Charleston Fire Department since retiring from the FDNY in 2015. Steve will share his story of how he has gone beyond his PTSD diagnosis to PTG (Post Traumatic Growth) with the help of therapy, medication, and becoming a peer counselor. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a silent injury that is not discussed as openly as it should be. Steve offers his story with others hoping they realize that there is no longer a stigma with being in pain. Gone are the days of “suck it up kid” and “we don’t talk about that stuff”. Talking helps empty “the box” of stored up trauma and images before it can overflow and affect you and your home life. This is not a scientific study or research but Steve’s story and how he has “Survived the Job”.

Matt volunteers as a chaplain and peer support for police agencies in Los Angeles. He also is a volunteer for nonprofits that support police officers in crisis, as well as those that are injured and disabled. Matt believes all first responders can have careers that provide deeper meaning and add richness to their spiritual lives if approached in the right manner. Matt is a medically retired police officer that worked patrol, Peer Support, SWAT, and as a full-time police academy instructor. Matt was the Wellness Coordinator for his agency integrating sports nutrition, strength, and conditioning, stress management, combatives-and-scenario training regarding officers as tactical athletes. He also was concurrently a collegiate strength coach at Yale and Georgetown Universities while a full-time police officer. Later he was a strength coach and mental skills trainer for NFL combine athletes. At Yale, he volunteered for Athletes in Action and at Georgetown, he created an ecumenical ministry Hoyas for Christ. Matt also has been a volunteer with Hockey Ministries International summer camps. Matt played linebacker and was a competitive powerlifter for the Air Force Academy and Colgate University. He has an MS in Forensic Science under Dr. Henry Lee, an MS in Sport Psychology under Dr. Ken Ravizza, a MA in Pastoral Theology with a concentration in Spiritual Direction from Loyola Marymount University, and an additional spiritual direction certificate from Stillpoint. Matt focused his studies and additional immersion experiences in the contemplative traditions as well as masculine spirituality and psychology. Matt’s niche is spending time in the trenches with first responders and veterans establishing trust and rapport. He does weekly ride alongs and station visits, observes and participates in any training that he is invited to, and goes shooting with veterans transitioning out of the military. His approach is not the traditional reacting to crisis or responding to requests, rather he pro-activity spends time with those he cares about while they are on the job. Matt’s priority is encouraging better overall wellness, life balance, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual self-care BEFORE officers or firefighters experience a breakdown or a crisis. However, Matt is also well versed in response to critical incidents as well as spending time with first responders at treatment facilities for PTSD and substance abuse issues. His ministry vision post covid lockdown is to continue to spend time in the trenches with officers, provide confidential peer support and spiritual direction, and facilitate a contemplative prayer group with “way of council” sharing for first responders and veterans in Los Angeles. Matt also plans to offer free wellness events integrating various aspects of fitness and martial arts, mindfulness and yoga, small group sharing, and fellowship with ribeyes on the grill. In a variety of ways, he hopes to provide platforms where first responders learn to use their unique career experiences as a spiritual path, rather than it leading to breakdown which unfortunately happens too often in these professions.

GEORGE COWGILL

I was born in Birmingham, Alabama 49 years ago, still here.. probably going to die here, too.. I have a beautiful wife, a beautiful daughter, three rescue pit bulls and two cats. I sang for a punk band called Exhaust throughout the mid-nineties. We toured America coast-to-coast for two years with a spitfire vengeance, sleeping in basements, backseats, and roach motels. Without question, it was the best time of my life. I also owned a punk rock nightclub in the 1990s called Unity 1605. It was strictly non-profit and run in true D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) fashion. In 2001 I wrote and directed the documentary “0274. Rezulin and the Death of Monica George.” The film is an emotional and somewhat disturbing story about a drug, a death, and a trial. The film paints a bleak portrait of justice in corporate America, relevant with society's descent into a nameless, faceless outlook on human life. Upon completion of the film I did a nationwide tour, speaking at universities and independent theatres. Of note was an invite to speak at Johns Hopkins. I spent the next few years writing screenplays, bartending, and traveling. I’ve had two books published, “An Account of Nothing” and “Unsung and Uncounted.” And then the firefighting… I followed in my dad’s footsteps and took a job with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Since day one I clocked in at one of the busiest fire stations in America. Fire, death, murder, you name it. I’ve never drank alcohol, even though I own two restaurants (Black Market Bar + Grill, 280 and 5pts). I play ice hockey to clear my head and I lift weights to keep calm. The last time I smoked a cigarette, or anything else for that matter, was in 1986. And I write. I write a lot.

Adam James has been a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri, Adam attended St.Paul’s Episcopal Day School and Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. Adam attended Park University with an emphasis on public relations and broadcasting but reprioritized his career path after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.Adam began the Kansas City Fire Academy in July of 2003, following his father’s footsteps to become a Kansas City Fire Fighter. While training at the academy, Adam suffered a serious injury, resulting in a shortened career after spinal fusion surgery in 2016. During his time with the Kansas City Fire Department, he served as a Business Agent for IAFF Local 42,coordinating communications with local and national media outlets for the union’s leadership. After entering into early retirement, Adam found himself lost and disconnected from the firefighter brotherhood. This period of reflection and discernment allowed for Adam to reconnect with his faith and realize God’s calling for him to live out servanthood as a deacon in the Episcopal Church. In 2020, Adam entered Bishop Kemper School for Ministry in Topeka, Kansas, as a postulant for Holy Orders to the Diaconate. During the summer of 2021, while completing numerous requirements for ordination, Adam was admitted to Saint Luke’s Health System’s Clinical Pastoral Education program as a chaplain intern. Spending 100 clinical hours achieving Level I CPE certification, Adam found himself called back to his firefighter experience many times in several intense occurrences with people in crisis. Among the many patients in need, Adam provided care to several front-line workers in a clinical ministerial setting. As Adam completes his final year of seminary, he has experienced God’s calling to engage his future diaconal ministry by developing awareness and ministry programs for first responder spiritual wellness, specifically firefighters, both active and retired.

In 1998, while stationed in Kitimat, British Columbia with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Laurie was shot in the right leg by an alleged sex offender wielding a sawed-off .303 rifle. Damage was so severe that her leg had to be amputated 5 inches below her knee. After only ten months of rehabilitation, Laurie passed the physical test standard for the RCMP and made an unprecedented return to full, unrestricted general policing duties with a prosthetic leg. When Laurie retired from the RCMP in 2020, she achieved a 22+ year goal of publishing her memoir (“10-33, An Officer Down Steps Back Up”). In addition to being a best-selling author, Laurie has been a sought-after speaker since 1999. She candidly shares her experiences as a first responder navigating mental health issues and life with a permanent physical disability. While Laurie’s journey began as one of trauma, loss, and grief, it evolved into one of hope, resilience, and post-traumatic growth.

I was born to 2 military parents in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. My siblings and I started school there and soon moved to Hawaii. After a few years on these 2 beautiful islands, our family of 5 decided to settle down in Texas where my brother and I finished our high school years. Moving so much throughout my childhood had made my family extremely close. For most of our years, it has always been just the 5 of us. No close relatives or family. So, when we lost my oldest sister in 2008, it was overwhelmingly devastating. Soon after my sisters death, I joined the Air Force and moved to Japan. I found love, got married and had a precious baby boy in 2012. In Feb of 2013, I was living in Maryland, on base housing at JBA. I was only 8 months postpartum when I got the knock on my door saying my husband had died. This turned me into a downward spiral. I struggled with addiction for many years after this and even made the decision to give my son over to my parents incase my addiction took my life. Thankfully, in 2017, I was able to quit using when I learned I was pregnant again. I had found love once more and was trying so damn hard to get my family back together. When this finally happened, it was one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. I’ve learned many new ways to cope with stress, grief, anxiety etc throughout these years I’ve been in recovery and in 2020, my dad passed away. I prayed that I wouldn’t turn back to my old ways and I implemented these new techniques I’ve learned to manage my episodes of stress and depression. I’m hoping to write a book to help others like me that deal with complex grief, mental health and addiction.

As the owner and clinical director of Midwest Neurofeedback (MWNF), Laura and her husband began building MWNF in 2004 to serve the KC metro community with neurofeedback and biofeedback services. At that time, there was only one other provider of those services in the area. After that practitioner moved away, MWNF remained the solo provider of neurofeedback services in this area for quite some time. Laura's educational background is a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Texas Tech; Licensed Master's Level Psychologist from the state of Kansas and Board Certified in neurofeedback from the certifying body. Laura's professional experience encompasses a wide range of settings and populations - from rural school districts, medical centers, and women's health clinics to locked and open psychiatric units and addiction units, a physical rehab hospital, as well as, emergency mental health assessments with Dade County EMT's. Midwest Neurofeedback has been serving adults, children and families of the KC community since 2004 with many different issues/diagnoses being addressed - anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, headaches, ADHD, concussion/TBI, misophonia, tinnitus, chemo brain, sleep issues, etc. Laura has been offering free neurofeedback services to military veterans for nearly 10 years as part of the homecoming4vets program. Some of her current interests include a program for 1st responders (similar to the homecoming4vets program) and neuromeditation, utilizing neurofeedback to facilitate meditation directly. This interest was enlivened by 2 working trips to Plum Village (the monastic home of Thich Nhat Hanh) outside Bordeaux France. During those visits, Laura and her colleagues completed brain maps and trained the brothers and sisters with neurofeedback. It was a life changing opportunity and experience. While Laura's interests continue to be varied, her plan is to carry on the vision that she and her husband established of utilizing neurofeedback to help heal our community, one nervous system at a time. Matt Blome 45 yo Married w/ 2 step sons (wife is from Fiji). Born and raised on a farm in Iowa Falls, Ia. Played college basketball at a JUCO and transferred to NW Missouri State. I love sports and fishing! After college (elementary education major with child psych minor) ran a tire shop in Maryville, Mo. Went to my first police academy in St. Joseph, Mo in June 2000. Was an officer at Maryville Public Safety and KCI Airport Police for 6 plus years. Took a break from law enforcement and volunteered on a federal contract in Iraq for 13 months. Embedded with the US Army as a police transition team member assisting the Iraqi National Police. Shortly after my return to the states, I went to Afghanistan for seven months and did it all over again. After my return from Afghanistan, I joined a large metro department (going on 10 years). I did two years with an Impact Squad (which happen to fall in during the riots & protests). CIT Officer, and now a district officer.

My name is Brian Caniglia and I have been with my current department for 3 years now and did 3 years with a smaller department before. I wanted to get in to policing way back in 2008ish. I tried a number of times in Phoenix, AZ but the recession hit so I was sol until 2015. I played baseball for years and thought policing was like a big team working together against the opposition. Obviously I have learned it’s not just catching bad guys, but helping the community any way I can. I have accomplished a few cool things in my short career. I received the award for Officer of the year in the metro in 2018 with my partner at the time Mike Mosher. Sadly Mike was shot in the line of duty on May 3rd, 2020. He received his second officer of the year the year he died along with your recent guest Tyler Moss. Other awards I have received are the gold award for valor and life savings award. It’s been a very interesting 6 years and glad I will be on the podcast.

Ray in his own words:

When I joined the Armed Forces in 2006 I wanted to fight on the physical battlefields amidst the fog and friction of war, and over the last 10 years I’ve been able to deliver weapons from the skies above those physical battlefields with lethal precision. But in 2019 the long awaited dream of being a pilot halted and has come to an end, and I was exposed to another battlefield I knew existed but severely under estimated. A warfare that impacts 100% of our armed forces, first responders, and general population, not just those coveted few who kick in doors, and engage the enemy seeing the whites of their eyes. A warfare afoot the emotional battlefield amidst the fog and friction of our hearts. The fight against social pressures, social conformity, finances, bills, debt, addictions, personal and interpersonal relationships, etc. This is our fight.

My purpose in life is to now become just as lethal in the fight against hopelessness, anxiety, depression, etc. on the spiritual battlefield, while taking the principles of conventional warfare and target prosecution I previously learned and deliver hope, and encouragement with the same surgical precision as I learned when weaponeering ordnance to release from my aircraft.

I’m not interested in learning how to save lives…..I’m INVESTED.

Adam James has been a lifelong resident of Missouri, Adam attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School and Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. Adam attended Park University with an emphasis on public relations and broadcasting but reprioritized his career path after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Adam began the Fire Academy in July of 2003, following his father’s footsteps to become a Fire Fighter. While training at the academy, Adam suffered a serious injury, resulting in a shortened career after spinal fusion surgery in 2016. During his time with the Fire Department, he served as a Business Agent for IAFF Local , coordinating communications with local and national media outlets for the union’s leadership.
