Step-parents... You may be one, have one, or know someone who has one. The relationship between a step-parent and a child can be complicated by so many factors.  Is the step-parent allowed to discipline the child? Do they have the same rights as a biological parent? Addiction can be a difficult epidemic to discuss. Substance abuse not only affects the addict, but it negatively affects the loved ones of the addict as well. It can be difficult to pick up the broken pieces of an addict's life and the lives of those the addict touched while in active addiction.
