Joe Piccirilli from Rosewater Energy discusses load shedding in the latest episode of Rosewater Unescripted. Load shedding is the automatic process of turning off selected breakers in your panel during a power outage to match the available power capacity. It ensures that the power demand doesn't exceed the capacity of the battery system. Load shedding also helps increase battery run time by reducing the load on the batteries. In 2012 the RoseWater team set out to build a device that would guarantee perfect power. The highest quality, most complete residential and light commercial power management available.
“At the beginning, we saw energy storage as a huge growth opportunity,” said Mario Bottero, Founder/Director of RoseWater Energy. Unfortunately, the concept and product didn’t hit the ground running. The team worked on prototypes for four or five years to find an acceptable product. It took some time because only the best would do. “We didn’t want to value engineer this. We wanted to build the best product. And people kept giving us products with compromises,” said Joe Piccirilli, CEO of RoseWater Energy.
Today, the RoseWater device prevents residents from suffering from surges or sags. The zero transfer inverters are on all the time, maintaining the infrastructure and security of smart homes across the US. “We always had a philosophy of ‘be the best.’ We stuck to that, and we continue to stick to that,” said Bottero. “Mario, Marco, and I refuse to compromise. If it’s not the best, we don’t want to do it,” said Piccirilli.
Year after year, the team would take the product to home shows. Early on, they struggled to effectively get the message of how RoseWater was different and why it cost so much more. Each year, they would return with an improved product. “Part of our resolve is what convinced people in the long run,” said Picirrilli.
Since the launch of RoseWater in 2012, a lot has changed. “Ten years ago, it was kind of a coastal problem,” said Piccirilli. Today energy surges and sags are impacting the entire country. Each season brings new weather issues to challenge the grid, and it’s in the news more than ever. RoseWater’s future is bright but protected from lightning and power surges. “It’s the best product on the market right now, but how do we make it better? We’re always looking at that. We always want it to be the best product,” said Bottero.

Matthews points out that at ADG, to keep their business running, they use a lot of gear, and still, the RoseWater device shows that ADG is at 50% of their energy usage. RoseWater tracks power outages in the area, and similar to what customers have said, the seamless designs leave clients not knowing when outages occur, thus allowing for productivity to continue. "Our team continues to monitor this device," said Piccirilli Additionally, employees are monitoring the systems around the clock to provide checks on clients' systems. RoseWater includes a diligent record-keeping system to help the client and Rose Water monitor when energy is too high and monitor the device's health. "I wanted to point out just how granular the detail we can garner from our controller, and it makes us unique, and this is one of the things that makes RoseWater the most complete energy solution on the market," said Piccirilli.

The conversation opened with a discussion of microprocessors and the importance of the electronic devices having consistent access to energy. Britannica defines a microprocessor as “any of a type of miniature electronic device that contains the arithmetic, logic and control circuitry necessary to perform the functions of a digital computer’s central processing unit.”
Whether we realize it or not, microprocessors permeate daily life. For instance, in the home, they can be found in a variety of devices, including washing machines, microwaves, dishwashers, refrigerators, hairdryers, electric toothbrushes and much more.
Piccirilli also noted the importance of consistent energy to ensure proper functionality of microprocessors. “As we continue to automate homes and businesses, we are loading them up with microprocessors,” he explained. “And, microprocessors want consistent voltage, consistent current — so consistent power in general. They certainly do not like power outages.”
Why does this matter? Sags and surges in energy can compromise longevity or cause complete failure altogether. Microprocessors impact virtually every aspect of our lives, so when they don’t work, the quality of life is severely impacted. On this episode of The Next Generation of Energy, Host Tyler Kern talked with Joe Piccirilli, CEO at RoseWater. They dug into some of the lessons Piccirilli and RoseWater have learned throughout the years regarding installing products among other things. They also drill into the market forces in the current energy industry.
“When RoseWater began, products that were considered power products were really based in recs,” Piccirilli explained. “They were really small and had really small capacity. We at RoseWater were convinced that ‘now is the time to build something that was substantial that could back up a panel.’”
In the beginning, they thought a 100 amp panel would be enough to back up critical loads. This was bigger than anybody else was offering, and everyone thought they were crazy. They started with a 100 amp and 200 amp product. Most services for a very large home start at 400 amps, so the 200 amp would cover half the house.
They thought the 100 amp would be their leading seller, but they discontinued the product after six months. The 200 amp ended up being their sweet spot because it allowed a subpanel of critical loads that people wanted to protect.
“Once we started convincing people that it wasn’t just backup power … but it was about power quality,” Piccirilli said.

Jim Sanfemio from Wicked Smart Homes in Sarasota, Florida, joined Rosewater Energy Group’s Joe Piccirilli and Next Generation of Energy host, Tyler Kern, to get down into the nitty-gritty of the issues that cause home power issues.
“First and foremost, the problems that you have with network equipment in homes is the sensitivity level that those components have to any type of freaky power situation be it a sag or a surge,” Sanfemio said. Lightening is a significant concern in terms of power outages. And for today’s clients, making sure they have continual access and availability to the internet is a primary concern over all other power needs in their homes.
Piccirilli and Sanfemio know all the potential power issues plaguing homeowners. They’ve experienced all the situations, but explaining these issues in a way that makes sense to customers can still prove challenging.
“I get asked the question all the time, how do you explain it,” Piccirilli said. “It is not an easy answer.” Sanfemio believed the situation is getting better as customers understand the relationship between power needs and power issues.
“That conversation can be taken further because you ask them, okay, you have a power surge device but do you’re still losing connectivity, and their answer would be yeah, how do we reboot now,” Sanfemio said. “We have conversations about the eventuality that you need some way to be further protecting your critical loads.”
One piece of the education process Piccirilli said is that homeowners don’t need to think in terms of power backup systems to power a home for a week. Solutions such as this are not only cost-prohibitive, but they are also unrealistic and often unnecessary. People often want solutions that can keep essential home power needs operational during shorter outages. In this space, Rosewater Energy provides solution options that make sense and work within the realities of a homeowner's budget.

Today, we're taking a look at several backup energy options, like generators, solar panels and other tools. We're going to discuss the nuances of all of them and some of the positives and some of the negatives. Giving insights to host Tyler Kern on this episode of The Next Generation of Energy by RoseWater Energy is Joe Piccirilli, CEO, RoseWater Energy.
It's pretty obvious, but there are significant differences between generators, solar panels and
battery backups. A generator is a device used for power backup in a home and is the same type of device utility companies use to provide energy to the entire country. There is a motor that turns and puts out continuous voltage. What it can't do is deal with a load change, so if an air conditioner gets turned on, the generator will sag. When the air conditioner gets turned off, the generator is still producing the same amount of energy, and that creates a spike.
"There is no way for a generator to anticipate that load, so it can create power anomalies through sags and surges," Piccirilli said. "But, a generator will back up your home for as long as you have fuel, so for a long-term power backup, it is a very good option."
Each power source has its downsides. Generators also don't produce enough power for a home because homeowners don't choose a device robust enough for their homes. This can be alleviated with a power conditioning device, according to Piccirilli.

Where did the understanding that power quality was an issue people needed to pay attention to begin? Joe Piccirilli, CEO of Rosewater Energy Group, said it was mission-critical environments where power quality problems first became an issue. Piccirilli and Mario Bottero, COO of Rosewater Energy Group, dove into the topic of power quality, focusing on why it’s so essential in today’s world of multiple devices and IoT.
Once upon a time, Joe Piccirilli, CEO, and Mario Bottero, COO of RoseWater Energy saw an opportunity to invest in home energy solutions. There is a need for a reliable and efficient power conditioner, power backup and surge protector for homes.
“Unlike the products we saw out there,” Bottero said, “which was a lot of companies working backward, and saying they need to sell a product, but it can only cost 25 grand, and what can we build for that money, we looked at the problem and said we need to sell a product that’s going to work.”
But the journey to that solution wasn’t short. It took four and a half years before Piccirilli and Bottero had a product worthy of selling and solving the power problems people were having.
“People thought the next generation of energy was going to be solar and a battery, and that was going to cure the ills of the grid,” Piccirilli said. “From the very beginning, our perspective was we weren’t sure that approach was helping anything, and it may be making the grid even worse.” While many said they were crazy, Piccirilli and Bottero stuck to their guns to make their solution a reality.
Piccirilli said RoseWater looked at creating solutions the made sense for all of the players, including both the consumer and the utility company.
“The question is, what does energy look like not just tomorrow, but five years from now, 10 years from now? You can’t just say we’re going to take down the grid. That’s not going to happen,” he said.
And RoseWater’s mission to keep solving energy problems for people will evolve with a constant focus on what they can improve in the future.
Joe Piccirilli, Managing Director at RoseWater Energy Group, has always spoken about four pillars of energy design: perfect power quality, protection against lightning, battery backup and renewable integration. Now, he’s added a fifth.
“After a few years of dealing with misconceptions about what batteries and renewals are capable of doing, I’ve added a fifth pillar,” he said. “That fifth pillar is intelligent design.”
For instance, a number of people who Troy Morgan CEO of PantTech Design, has worked with recently think they can power their whole house on battery backup for nearly an endless amount of time. Others think if they have solar panels, their house will stay powered even if the grid goes down. Not so – unless a battery is involved.
That’s why Morgan and Piccirilli think educating the public on energy issues is so important. That includes consumers who simply want to make sure their power stays on at their home, but also builders and contractors responsible for designing the systems
“The traditional design principles have required contractors to pre-define (a complicated energy plan), know all this up front and then, more importantly, design the system in such a way that there’s a separate energy panel that the battery powers. So, all the things the battery powers go in that and everything else is in a completely separate load center,” he said. “With Adapt Energy, you don’t have to think about it like that anymore, but you do still have to know up front what can the battery power and what can’t the battery power.”
A dropped Zoom call here. A brief internet outage there. When millions more Americans were working from their offices, it would’ve gone unnoticed. Now, with so many more working from home because of the coronavirus pandemic, people are waking up to their power quality issues.
“We didn’t really notice power quality issues, because we weren’t home,” said Joe Piccirilli, CEO of RoseWater Energy. “During the day, when we’re normally at work, is when our electrical system is taxed the most. Anything that went on in the home, there was nobody there to notice. Now, during the COVID era, for the last … 16 weeks to 20 weeks at this point, people have begun to notice.”
While the bulk of RoseWater’s focus has been on residential clients, more and more businesses are coming aboard as they enter a digital era in which they need documents instantly and can’t wait for a transition to a backup in the case of a power outage – something RoseWater’s product eliminates via battery technology always powering the inverter.
“We’ve noticed that now law offices, doctors’ offices – anybody who is storing digital information where secure, always available information has to be there – have become a great deal more interested in our product,” Piccirilli said. “Because our product guarantees perfect power. It is not just a battery backup. It is not something that just an enabler for a renewable. Our product guarantees that the power output of our device feeding your home is always perfect, regardless of input.”
That’s needed as the pandemic has more and more people working from home, something that most thought leaders agree will be more frequent even in a post-COVID world after the pandemic provided something of a proof of concept for many businesses. None of that works, however, if the devices we utilize don’t get the juice they need or get it in a good enough quality to make sure we can work our best.
