AGAIN!Governor DeSantis Plans to Hold Higher Ed Captive, The Florida College System Presidents Remove DEI, CRT, and Personal Identity from Public Colleges and Universities Across Florida as of February 1, 2023. WHAT: When it comes to protecting and promoting human rights it is heinous what is happening in the State of Florida's already severely comprised culture. Day 5 of the removal of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs, Critical Race Theory and its foundations, and Identity from public colleges and universities in the State of Florida, per the February 1, 2023, deadline announced by The Florida College Systems Council of Presidents. The Florida College System Presidents ought to be held accountable for these violations and reverse their efforts before any more damages are done. Instead of admonishing, sanctioning, and demanding the the FCS Presidents overturn their discriminatory actions, Governor DeSantis has announced, the "Civil Discourse and Intellectual Freedom" bill that will be proposed this upcoming legislative session, Spring 2023. WHO: Students, professors, employees, administrators, or community members who are involved with any of the dozens of colleges and universities in the state of Florida experiencing this shutdown and want to talk about it.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to pull this off, but my plan is to try to read this on Talk with Tenney on Blog Talk Radio while I stream the document I am reading and live editing on Twitch. Jyl’s work appears in We Are The Changemakers, Protectors 2: Heroes, and Asylum Magazine for Democratic Psychiatry among others. She’s worked as an advocate for victims of child abuse in the court system. Originally from Trinidad, she now lives in the United States where she works as a forensic medium, makes plant medicine in her home apothecary, and faces the blank page.

Kathy Flaherty has lived at the intersection of mental health and the law since her first 1L year at Harvard Law School, when she was civilly committed to a psychiatric hospital. She interned for Connecticut Legal Rights Project (CLRP) after her second 1L year, back in the early 1990's. Kathy has been the Executive Director of CLRP since 2015. CLRP provides legal representation to people eligible for mental health services from the State of Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. One of CLRP's most important goals is to empower people with psychiatric and other labels by increasing their own ability to influence the decision-making processes that, to a large extent, control their lives. Kathy’s experiences as an ex-patient and psychiatric survivor inform her advocacy for disability justice.

Once you know a crucial fact about what gets called "mental illness", the debate about whether or not President Donald J. Trump is "mentally ill" disappears, and what is left is what really matters. What really matters is that President Trump apparently has no desire to change behavior that has been described as totally self-absorbed, self-referential, misogynist, racist, xenophobic, and otherwise abusive. It's ironic that the arguments on both sides of the debate about whether or not Trump is "mentally ill" are based on the one "alternative fact": that deciding who is "mentally ill" is a science. That could not be farther from the truth.

Paula J. Caplan, Ph.D., is a clinical and research psychologist and currently Associate at the DuBois Institute, Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, Harvard University. In October of 2016 Dr. Bonnie Burstow endowed a matching scholarship called “The Bonnie Burstow Scholarship in Antipsychiatry" at the University of Toronto. This is the first such scholarship anywhere in the world. Correspondingly, in December the first ever anthology of institutional investigations into psychiatry came out (Psychiatry Interrogated: An Institutional Ethnography Anthology). The Boston Globe has been running a sensational one sided piece on people with mental illness designed to encourage forced interventions and to silence those who speak up for Human Rights.

Tara Marie McNeely is a certified peer specialist, photographer, blogger, and activist living in central Massachusetts with her teenage daughter, fiance, and two kitties. Her involvement with the mental health system began at the age of seven-and-a-half when trauma and ensuing anxiety were labeled as anything but, causing further trauma. . As a teen she decided that, once she found her voice, she would use it in service of the voiceless, work to change the mental health system, and do her part in the fight for social justice.

Sera is an activist and advocate who has used her own experiences in the psychiatric system to guide her in her work as a part of the leadership team with the Western Massachusetts Recovery Learning Community for going on 10 years. She is also a regular blogger at Mad in America, a filmmaker, and mother of two.

Naomi Ruth Pinson has been in recovery for the past 51 years from the ill treatment she received at the hands of the mental health system. Naomi was a part of the early protest movement in Boston, Mental Patient Liberation Front, and then joinded it's successor M-POWER (Massachusetts People/Patients Organizing for Wellness Recovery and Rights). Naomi created and directed the second peer support/recovery group in the nation (first one being Ed Knight and Howie Vogels group in upper NY state).

"Tobias" is the latest chapbook of poetry written by Jack M. Freedman. Just as his previous book, "Never Lick the Spoon", was a tribute to those who passed, "Tobias" is a celebration of life. Headlines this week are filled with Police killing individuals in Baton Rouge, Minnesota, and New York who are African American and Latino and/or who also have a perceived disability.

African Americans being racially profiled and killed by Police is not new.

What is new and becoming more common is police violence being recorded. These videos going live contain horrific graphic footage that the public is witnessing via social media. The anger of the people from witnessing these human rights violations is causing a ground swell.

Now, because of social media, we also have more footage of our Human Rights movements: Black Live Matter and Psychiatric Survivors are putting more light on these incidents.

What does it mean for a robot to have killed a man? If it had been a white man, would there be equal acceptance of this fate?

What changes are occurring in our society or in our relationships to the Community and the Police?

January 31, 2016 WE will be discusing current legislation effecting the independence of persons with Disablities. Tonight we will have Bruce Darling as our guest to discus the SChumer Bill which will more clearly gurantee the rights of people to live in the Community.

Bruce Darling is co-founder and CEO of the Center for Disability Rights (CDR), a Rochester-based disability rights organization and Independent Living Center. He also serves as CEO of the Regional Center for Independent Living and All About You Home Care, a disability-led home care organization in upstate New York. During his a career in disability rights and Independent Living that has spanned nearly three decades, he has dealt with a wide range of disability issues: fighting for access to public transportation, promoting accessible housing, creating community-based alternatives to institutionalization, and opposing physician-assisted suicide.

Erick Fabris was one of the “West End Psychiatric Survivors” who started Psychiatric Survivor Pride Day in Toronto in the 1990s.

His work with Pride and the No Force Coalition led him to look into Community Treatment Orders for his masters thesis.

He published a book on this topic in 2011 titled “Tranquil Prisons.”

Erick has moved away from peer advocacy services and academic work and is presently hosting mad cultural events in Toronto.

Fabris uses culture and creativity to rally community for resisting psychiatry.

Jack M. Freedman is a poet, spoken word artist, and author of the up and coming chapbook, Never Lick the Spoon. He hails from Staten Island, NY and can be found performing at slams and open mics around NYC. In addition, he is an activist and advocate for issues ranging from the rights of the LGBT community to the rights of mental health recipients.

Dara Baldwin before joining NDRN in June 2014, Dara was an ADA Compliance Specialist in the DC Government and also served as a policy analyst at the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL). She was responsible for the diversity and cultural competency outreach as well as working on coalitions to assist with better legislative outcomes for the community. She assisted with writing the disability provisions and was a leader in the advocacy campaign to get the Violence Against Women Act 2013 passed in February 2013. Prior to this work Ms. Baldwin worked as a Child Advocate in NJ, Sr. Policy Analyst on multiple criminal justice issues such as the Second Chance Act and as an Advocacy Manager at TASH.

Dara was born in Spain and raised in Newark, NJ. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Rutgers University, Newark, NJ and was a Pi Alpha Alpha honors Graduate with a Masters of Public Administration from Rutgers University the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Newark, NJ. She received a 2009 and 2010 Presidential Citation Award for her work in the American Society for Public Administration. On this show we will be exploring NDRN role and what they do. In the year 2000 I was informed by the psychiatrist/professor of Michigan State University Dale D`Mello that I would need maintenance ECT and psych meds for the remainder of my life.

The last electroshock was administered by D. D`Mello in/around September of 2000.

In 2007 I began to taper off the drugs as well. I began to lose weight (good thing because I tipped the scales at 261 lbs) and started getting healthier. By 2009 I no longer needed my cane or handicap parking permit.

One drug kept me working for 8 long years. Klonopin had so affected me it took 8 years to finally be set free. My goal to become "drug free" has become a reality this year. I have been drug free for quite some time now. My physical health also improved to the point I am no longer taking medications for anything except a small dose of thyroid hormone.

Gayle Bluebird, RN, has been active in the consumer/survivor movement since 1974. She has worked in many different capacities. Prior to retiring she worked in the state of Delaware as the Director of Peer Services for five years. She worked on a team at the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors from 2002-2014. Ms. Bluebird often speaks at national conferences on subjects of peer roles in inpatient settings, on the healing value of touching and comfort, and on recovery through the arts.. In 2010 she was recognized with a national SAMHSA VOICE Award at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles for her contributions as a consumer advocate and activist. She is a flamboyant dresser and has created a character, Henrietta, a bit confused but humorous. Her current goal is to organize a first national MAD Arts Festival for mental health consumers in 2016 and to keep writing her own personal memoirs. Her published poetic memoir can be found on Amazon: You’re Pretty When You Smile.”

Vast numbers of us find ourselves shamed or ashamed as a direct result of having been psychiatrized. What if this is not an accident? Could it be that toxic shame is a direct intention of psychiatry, not just a byproduct? Is psychiatry using shame in the same way it uses other so-called ‘treatments’ – as a means to silence dissent, marginalize critique and enforce compliance with dominant culture ‘norms.’ Regardless of intentions, what is the implication of an entire profession actively exploiting clinician-patient power differentials so that its members are free to force their will on vulnerable, unconsenting service recipients?

In this episode, we explore our lived experiences with what we are coming to term ‘psychiatric molestation.’ We discuss how the medical model has positioned psychiatry to ‘have its way with us’ in body, mind and spirit. We openly challenge the violation inherent in any posture of ‘clinical intercourse’ which dictates that the psychiatrist is always on top, dominant and entitled to exercise power, while relegating patients to the bottom, submissive, receptacle role. Finally, and most importantly, we ask how we can overcome iatrogenic shame and recover from the damage that psychiatry has done to us on physical, mental, moral, social and existential levels.

Mike Bachhuber, Executive Director, Independent Living Council of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

Mike has worked for social justice for the last four decades, in disability rights since 1997. His work includes Wisconsin's Protection and Advocacy System, an IL Center and his current job. As a consumer, Mike sat on the state’s Mental Health Planning and Advisory Council and served as a founding Board member for its Mental Health Consumer Network. He currently devotes time to organizing the civil rights efforts of the National Council on Independent Living as Co-chair of its Mental Health Civil Rights Task Force and has worked with ADAPT. He received his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Imparato is the former President and CEO of AAPD and comes to AUCD from the position of Senior Counsel and Disability Policy Director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, chaired by Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa. Previously, Imparato served as the General Counsel and Director of Policy for the National Council on Disability, an attorney advisor with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Disability Policy, and a staff attorney with the Disability Law Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Like H.R. 2690, the new S. 1945 also slices at privacy going as far to say: “the protected health information of patients with a mental illness may be disclosed with and without patient consent” (p. 82).

(267) 521-0167 David Healy: You Promote This? Life After Electroshock: Disability, Discrimination, Brain Damage, and Negative Economic Ramifications

David Healy please clarify your stance on electroshock. Hear people who are electroshock survivors and their academic allies describe the multiple ways in which electroshock continues to act as a human rights violation on a day-to-day basis for those who have been subjected to it. Electroshock negatively impact people long after the final spark; a continued feeling of discrimination that one experiences as someone who was allowed to be put into this position of being electroshocked. Electric assault is intesified by "doctors" invalidating people who speak out against the brain damage shock caused them, including memory loss. Social isolation is created by discrimination, invalidation, and brain damage. The resulting disability that often leaves one unable to work, with both memory of their skills and passions wiped away from the shock and damage done by the shock to prevent new memories from forming, leaving them also economically damaged.

Jason Kalendek, a 44 year old shock survivor, who had been on psych drugs for more than 20 years was conned into getting electroshock as a way to get off the drugs. Electroshock destroyed his working memory and caused amnesia; destroyed his art career. The shock was 5 years ago and he is barely able to survive, the trauma of it is the worst thing that has ever happened to him.

Tony is a 61 year old electroshock who was subjected to shock at 16 years old. He never regained memories of his childhood and continues to struggle with long term and short term memory loss.

Kenny was drugged by the time he was 14 years old and electroshocked at twenty-one. All of his biographical memory was destroyed and six years later he faces an uncertain future because of cognitive problems and post traumatic stree from what psychiatry has done to him/

Learn how they launched a campaign for ACA.Pamela Weston is a grandmother in East TN who organized a 70 mile walk through her state senate district to reach out to those in the healthcare coverage gap resulting from Tennessee's decision not to expand Medicaid. Her Insure TN Journey for Justice crossed a rural senate district through five counties in an effort to reach out to the district's nearly 15,000 uninsured adults. Meryl Rice is a retired psychotherapist whose last position was as the Director of Crisis Services for a mental health agency which covers five rural counties in West TN. She also has many years experience in the healthcare field working in med-surg hospitals . Her 40 year experience has made her acutely aware of how access to affordable healthcare affects not only individuals and families, but the community at large. After retirement, Meryl and her husband Randall Rice took it upon themselves to promote the Affordable Care Act and initially trained to be navigators/certified application counselors. When there were no "sponsoring agencies" near them willing to take on the responsibility of volunteers, they decided to launch out on their own. However, they hit another roadblock.

From Craig Lewis: Our animal companions mean the world to us. For those of us who have struggled throughout our lives, who have been abandoned, mistreated, subjugated and disempowered, we know the damage that has impacted our psyche. I am one of these people. I know what it means to be damaged to my core. There have been many times in my life when I was unsure if I would make it the next day. There have been many times in my life that the pain I was experiencing was too much to manage and that the prospect of never hurting again was a beautiful thought to have. Even in the past three months, abject despair has, at times, consumed me. However, there was something different going on this time. I have an animal companion in my life who is depending on me to care for him. No matter how bad things became I felt a responsibility to him. His name is Max the Cat. Max the Cat is a rescue. He has experienced abandonment two times in his short life. No matter what was going on with me, I simply could not abandon him. I know the brutal pain of abandonment. Every day I spent time with him, patting him, brushing him and singing to him. He responded by smothering me with his love. He saw and heard me cry every day, sometimes uncontrollably, and he knew of my pain and suffering and he gave me his unconditional love. Without Max the Cat being in my life these past few months, I would be dead. I love Max the Cat and he has helped me stay alive and his love has helped heal me in ways that I have never experienced before. We want to hear from listeners about your precious and loved animal companions. Many of you may have had a loving animal companion who may no longer be with you. Chris Hansen hails from New Zealand. Her chief qualification for this work is her own lived experience of being diagnosed, treated, locked up and coerced in the mental health system. Before her official and very public promotion to this certified status, Chris worked as a manager of a Community Mental Health Service. As a result she lost her job, home, custody of a child, all her friends and much of her personal dignity and self-respect (this was a small town, and a source of much gossip). She discovered, in the process, that the real impetus and inspiration for her journey forward did not come from the people who were paid to be there, it came from the peers who sat beside her in the smoking room, where the most life-giving conversations happened. . Over the last fifteen years she has been involved in local, regional, national and international peer support and advocacy initiatives, and in mental health sector planning and politics from a service user perspective. Other roles have included leadership within the “Like Minds, Like Mine” project (NZ’s award-winning project to counter stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness), research for the NZ Mental Health Commission, and involvement in the development of the NZ national mental health workforce development strategy. Chris was a member of the New Zealand delegation to the United Nations for the development of the Convention for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and has served on the board of the World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry. She played a key role in the conception and development of a peer-run crisis alternative. Chris became interested in Intentional Peer Support then years ago when looking for non-coercive ways to support one another through difficult times and crisis. She is married to Shery Mead, the founder and developer of Intentional Peer Support, and is now the director of IPS.

Working with MindFreedom Florida, Frank helped bring Daniel Mackler to Gainesville for a film festival and panel discussion. A demonstration is planned for January at the State House. Janet is a board member of the World Federation for Mental. Frank explains to me, "I am working with a group of people who want to protect people facing involuntary outpatient commitment, a euphemism for forced psychiatric drugging, by helping them relocate outside of the state that would drug them."

Frank is a psychiatric treatment survivor and an anti-psychiatry human rights activist. With David Oaks, Al Galves and others Frank screened the Arlington Virginia American Psychiatric Association offices for normality way back in October 2007. Before moving to Gainesville, Florida, he lived in Charlottesville, Virginia. While in Virginia he served as point person for MindFreedom Virginia, and in Florida he is the contact person for MindFreedom Florida. Having completed both basic and advanced Leadership Academy trainings, Frank has co-facilitated Leadership Academy training sessions in Gainesville. Working with MindFreedom Florida, Frank helped bring Daniel Mackler to Gainesville for a film festival and panel discussion. He was the chair of the MindFreedom International Affiliate Support Committee and currently co-chairs the Landing Zone Committee. His current projects include an effort to introduce Open Dialogic practices in Florida, and he hopes to launch a mutual support group locally for people who wish to taper off psychiatric drugs.

The CAB will be made up of a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 20 individuals who receive or have received mental health services in New York City.

The CAB membership will reflect the racial, ethnic, gender, cultural and geographic diversity of New York City.

Terms for members will be 3 years from their date of appointment.

i. Members are responsible for proper behavior at all activities of the CAB and will be subject to suspension or removal from the CAB based on any type of abusive behavior, whether verbal, physical, sexual or physiological.

ii. Per Article 120 of New York Penal Law (law of menacing ) & Penal Law 240 (Aggravated Harassment):

Any committee member that exhibits threatening behavior such as abusive yelling, violent language, intimidating physical stance, or gestures will be immediately mandated to leave the meeting, event, activity, or industry associated event involving CAB. The dismissed member(s) would not be able to return until after a decision of disciplinary review made by CAB. All violent physical acts are subject to prosecution.

iii. Any CAB or DOMH Staff member who feels that they have been the exposed to abusive behavior should inform the CAB Chairperson, who with the Executive Committee will evaluate and take to appropriate actions, by majority vote, which will be limited to:

Dr. Seth Farber is a writer, social critic, dissident psychologist (he received his doctorate in 1984),visionary, activist (in the human rights, Green and anti-war movements -- and a supporter of animal rights) and co-founder of the Network Against Coercive Psychiatry (1988). His newest and most important book was just released in May,The Spiritual Gift of Madness:The Failure of Psychiatry and the Rise of the Mad Pride Movement. (The Foreword is written by internationally renowned writer, feminist and human rights advocate Kate Millett, author of Sexual Politics and The Loony Bin Trip.)

Dr Farber has had four books published previously, including a book on Jewish critics of Israel, and numerous essays and articles. A critic of the mental health system, he has been a guest on many television and radio shows. His first book Madness, Heresy and the Rumor of Angels: The Revolt Against the Mental Health System (Open Court, Chicago, 1993) contained a foreword by Thomas Szasz. The publication of his memoir Lunching with Lunatics: Adventures of a Renegade Psychologist has been postponed until the time is propitious.(See excerpts below right.) Our civil liberties are under attack. In New York S2225D-2013 (sponsor: Senator Young) seeks to expand Kendra's Law Involuntary Outpatient Commitment and eliminate the sunset date of 2017. Nationally, the Murphy bill HR3717 in ful or piecemeal will infringe on all of our rights. The Barber bill pushes early identifiation, diagnosis, and treatment for young people, young adults and veterans. Local and national organizing efforts are underway. What do you want to talk about? S2225D-2013 will expand Kendra's Law to people who are incarcerated, and the amount of time that the State can go back in your life history to provide evidence for why you need to be involuntarily commited to psychiatry in the community. Who is safe from psychiatry's reign?

Womyn are far more likely to be electroshocked and drugged via their fathers, brohters, uncles, husbands, partners, boyfriend's testimony that the psychiatric rapers hold as evidence of illness without a shred of such evidence, committing multiple human rights violations against us.

The mysogyny of Elliot Rodgers went by with little notice and instead the fraud of psychiatric profiling and a further clamping down on our human rights was put forth.

Sue Clark-Wittenberg wrote me:

Electroshock also known as ECT, shock, and electroconvulsive therapy is still being given. Yearly 100,00 people in the USA get ECT. Most people are forced to have ECT. Worldwide, it is estimated that 1 to 2 to million ECTs are being given.

Sue Clark-Wittenberg is an electroshock survivor. At 17 years old shewas forced to have ECT in 1973. On her 5th ECT her heart stopped and she had to revived. In 1998 Sue became an anti-psychiatry activist.

Sue and her husband Steven founded in 2005 The International Campaign to Ban Electroshock (ICBE). The ICBE deems ECT to be torture, barbaric, inhumane, unethical and a crime against humanity. ECT must be banned universally. ECT always causes brain damage.

Don Weitz is a psychiatric survivor of insulin shock in the 1950s, an antipsychiatry and social justice activist. Since 1974, Don has been active in the Psychiatric Survivor Liberation Movement; in the 1980s has participated in many public protests including civil disobedience against electroshock and was arrested at least twice with several other survivor activists. Don is co-founder of Phoenix Rising (the first antipsychiatry magazine in Canada,1980-1990), co-editor of the antipsychiatry anthology Shrink Resistant: The Struggle Against Psychiatry in Canada (1988), author of the e-book Rise Up/Fight Back (2012), and co-founder (with Dr. Bonnie Burstow) of the Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault (CAPA). He continues to protest against the "mental health" system and psychiatry, he lives in Toronto.

HR 3717 if passed will be a disaster for people involved with psychiatry--an elimination of protection and advocacy, alternatives, and a mandate for every state to have an involuntary outpatient commitment law. Please call in to share your thoughts.

While no one is defending the recent actions of several mass murders, they are being hauled out to the public in a drumbeat of fear mongering. According to FBI data, in 2010, there were 12,996 murders. The media does not focus on these. Instead, they isolate out the most heinous and sensationalized situations to condition the public to associate violence and psychiatric labels. This is a fraud. Psychiatric profiling and an increased reliance on psychiatry as an answer will repeatedly fail us as a society. All psychiatry offers are drugs and institutions. There are plenty of alternatives, that will not rob tax-payer expenditures, and produce better outcomes. Not only does psychiatry cost tax-payers billions of dollars a year in terms of services and products, but it steals millions of dollars from our economy by preventing people who have been psychiatrically assigned from working, as they are mandated into psychiatric programming, creating jobs for psychiatric, legal, medical, and police and safety professionals. It is widely accepted that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-V has little validity. Evidence-based supports such as mutual assistance and self-help need to be fostered, and as a country, we must adopt trauma-informed care models. According to the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, Eric K. Shinseki (March, 2014), the VA spends at least $7 billion on "mental health" services. On what? Drugs? Electroshock? Where is the transparency?

There are more than twenty million Veterans. Millions of people who have served the United States are on their ways back home from war. The things these women and men have endured in war are unimaginable to most who have never been there. How could one not be effected by war? The suicide rate amongst vets is staggering, some estimates stating 22 Veterans complete suicide each day. As a country, as anyone watching the news will learn, we are failing Veterans in the medical arena with delayed and denied treatment. The result is Vets are needlessly dying. If that's what is documented in happening in medical treatment, what is happening in terms of emotional and social supports?

Most states already have IOC laws that go by different names in each state. We need to address the laws, public perception, and most of all to equate funding for non-violent alternatives since we all know, deep down, medicine should not be harmful, damaging or life destroying. It should not isolate us, make us permanently numb, sick, or stupid and it certainly should not make us die early or become violent or suicidal, all of which psychiatric pharmaceuticals do regularly."

"I think NY State's Kendra's Law is unduly restrictive and inhumane. How could you require a person to undergo forced psychiatric medication when that same person would refuse life sustaining treatment for cancer or any other terminal disease? It just boggles the mind."

Involuntary outpatient commitment laws impose human and civil rights violations on people who are subjected to them. call in!

9:00 guest: Erick Fabris, Author, Tranquil Prisons

Erick Fabris is a psychiatric survivor activist, writer, and artist. His first book on forced treatment, Tranquil Prisons, was published by University of Toronto Press. After a stint in Vancouver General’s psych unit, he helped organize Mad Pride (1993), the No Force Coalition (1999), and has been a member of the Mad Students Society (2006). Erick has given lectures on rights and alternatives in mental health, from Africa and Europe to the US and Canada.

Tranquil Prisons is a book about how major tranquilizers, also called neuroleptics and antipsychotics, are used to restrain mental patients for long periods without the fuss of detaining them in cells. The writer calls this form of therapy a chemical incarceration, as it slows the body and brain in an effort to constrain people labelled mentally ill. He also argues that this form of torture will continue to be discussed as a mere treatment issue by professionals in the helping industries unless psych survivors highlight it as a human rights issue. This in-depth study is held together by personal testimonies and an activist’s hard won knowledge of the psych system. Published by the University of Toronto Press, Tranquil Prisons is an engaging look at IOCs and CTOs as an example of how treatment becomes punishment under psychiatry.
