CDR Macon is the Response Department Head at Sector San Francisco. She has many years of operational as well as policy development experience across multiple coast guard missions including Marine Environmental Response, Incident Management, Search and Rescue Coordination, Maritime law enforcement and more.

CDR Macon has been my mentor for many years now, and this podcast touches on some of the leadership topics we've discussed over that time including the importance of building a culture of professionalism and leadership within an organization, leadership ethics and integrity and many other topics.

We start with her background growing up in Hawaii and discuss her personal experience with a lot of the cultural, historical, and sociological challenges that Hawaii has. Then we cover a number of wide ranging subjects including diversity issues within the Coast Guard, leadership skills in crisis leadership, reframing the idea of possible, and so much more. Enjoy!

LT Raymond has been in the Coast Guard for over 15 years of experience both as an enlisted and currently a response officer. He's served at multiple air stations as a Avionics Electrical Technician and is incredibly experienced in the world of search and rescue, command center operations, pollution and hazmat response and more.

I just want to say a special thank you to Mr. Raymond for his incredible openness and honesty in this conversation. We get into some incredibly personal stories about his background with his family, why he has a different last name than the one he was born with, his struggles with alcoholism and how he found sobriety and many many other personal details.

His story is full of personal leadership lessons, how he maintains resiliency, and the importance of having a strong community network and family. I was truly honored that he shared it with me and on this platform. I hope you all get as much out of this as I did.

Chief Mrzljak was born in Bosnia, then part of Yugoslavia and shares his harrowing story of how he and his family got out of that country as it was fracturing into numerous independent countries through a series of violent and bloody wars.
