Although they went to college together, it had been nearly 15 years since they last caught up, making this conversation equal parts reunion, music talk, and honest discussion about fatherhood.

He discusses how he got sober and faced his demons before imploding his life. Anthony told me in this call that he wrote the book because he knew the journey of figuring out your identity after military service can be difficult and he wanted people to know they aren’t alone in their struggles.

They both have 1 kid under the age of 2. So a lot of this conversation is about the chaos, exhaustion and changes that come in the first year of a kids life. Like when your kid chokes on a chip and then you’re googling hand held vacuums to see if you need one around the house.

Mason’s daughter spent time in the NICU and we talked about the reality of when your daughter is born at 19 weeks instead of full term. And the story of being on the road and getting the call from his wife that he needed to get home. We also talk about their band Turn Two and how they formed and the pop punk scene in Philly and New England area.

But mostly a lot of this conversation is about the changes you make in your life when you have a newborn and the feelings of excitement, joy, exhaustion and pride.

On this episode we have on Sid from the band The Emergency Exit. You also might have seen his videos on socials talking about being a Punk Rock Girl Dad and teaching his daughter about punk rock music.

We talked about letting her daughter play with his vinyl and guitars, how being a dad adds a layer of depth and love that’s hard to explain, horror movies, recording music, his love of star wars, and the story of how started posting videos of being a punk rock dad.

My favorite thing about Sid is how much of a normal guy he was. He seemed very “I’m a guy who plays punk rock, loves punk rock, and is gonna teach his kids punk rock, regardless of if this videos get watched or not.” SO it’s really cool to learn more about him and his life

On this episode we have on Musician Cory Cullinan, also known as Dr Noize.

I met up with Cory as his studio out here and we discussed taking his daughters to the Grammy’s, his daughters going off to college, coaching his daughters in soccer, and learning how to motivate his kids based on their personalities.

A lot of this conversation is a deeply personal story about Cory’s upbringing. I asked him about what made him do kids music and he shared the story of his childhood. He grew up with a normal happy family life and then his brother got sick and died within 2 years, and a year later his dad committed suicide. Cory opened up to me about how that has guided the rest of his life. From trying to understand his dad’s decision to understanding his brother’s acceptance of illness. By performing for kids he honors his dad and brother before life fell apart.

So this episode has a lot to it. And I’m genuinely grateful for Cory’s trust in sharing his story.

On this episode we have on author Marisa Burt.

We talked about being a mom to 6 kids, balancing time and intentionality with kids, over researching things, how she ended up in the pacific north west and how unique every kid can be.

A lot of our talk is about her new book she wrote with Kelsey Kramer McGinnis, The Myth of Good Christian Parenting How False Promises Betrayed a generation of evangelical families.

This book is a deep dive into Christian parenting some of you may have been raised on. Who wrote the books our parents read, the legacy of the people and the lasting effect of the teachings. Marissa and Kelsey do a great job with this book discussing the culture of communities while asking the question if the teachings are Biblical or not.

I think a lot of parenting is looking back at your childhood and deciding to repeat or change habits and patterns. I know a lot of people who had deconstructed, or were raised in a church environment and this book puts a lot of great words and language to feelings and realities I’ve experienced and I know other people have too.

If you’re interested in checking out the book you can find it anywhere books are sold, and on audible.

On this episode we have on author Patton Dodd.

We talked about his kids getting older and now being a plane flight away, life in Texas, and his day job helping families. Most of this conversation was about his new book The Father you Get. Patton had a difficult relationship with his dad. His dad made his family move a lot, burned a lot of bridges, and Patton wrote this book about their relationship. Patton was pretty honest about the journey of trying to learn about his father when he distanced himself from him for so long. I also talked to Patton about the toll writing a book like this took on him, and the exhaustion of doing the audio book.

The conversation isn’t all heavy because there’s life lessons he learned about fatherhood from this journey. But I really appreciate Patton letting me into his mental space to discuss a book he never thought he’d write.

I got a real sense of gratitude from Randy in this call and excitement for life. And that felt really cool to tap into on a call. He’s making music, he’s a dad, and he seems like he’s entering into a chapter of life where he’s in disbelief this is his life.

On this episode we have on musician Tony Kamel.

I talked to Tony about expecting his second kid in 2026, life a musician, having a painting business, mental health, and activities he likes to do with his daughter.

A big part of this conversation was talking about the stress and anxiety of figuring out how to make sure your wife feels supported, but also you’re financially secure and trying to be present for your family. Tony was really honest about the tension of wanting to get out on the road and play shows, but also not miss moments with his kids.

On this episode we have on Allan Shedlin from Daddying Film Festival.

How I found Allan was kind cool. An account called Daddying Film Festival start following us on instagram and I noticed it was a film festival about fatherhood and encouraging people to make videos about fatherhood so I thought I’d reach out to them to see if they wanted to talk about it on the podcast!

Then I was introduced to Allan and found out he’s been an advocate for film and fatherhood his entire career, his articles have been featured in the New York Times, he’s sat on presidential forums to talk about fatherhood, and coined the term Daddying to make being a dad a verb.

For this conversation we talked about his journey with fatherhood, from being a teacher, to leading schools, conducting interviews with dads to learn about their lives, writing a book, being a dad, being a grandpa, and a lot of the life lessons he’s learned about fatherhood along the way.

Make sure to go to daddyingfilmfestival.com the learn about the rules for submission for films and all the organization does!

This episode’s guest is Rob Reider the executive director of the Sad Dads Club. The Sad Dads Club helps bereaved fathers navigate life after the loss of a child.

This episode discovers child loss and the darkness that comes after it. The Sad Dads Club exists to create community for dads after such a huge loss.

Rob and I talked about his love of music and his time in a band and the do it yourself punk scene, his experience with having a stillbirth, going through IVF, and having a second kid. Rob shared stories of how this group gives men a life line when they’re surrounded by so much darkness.

I really respect and believe in what Rob is doing. He’s leaning into meeting men where they are when they are isolated and making sure they feel seen and have space to discuss their lives. Rob has hard conversations with men all the time about their darkest moments, and the love and light he carries is really inspiring.

If you or a dad you know has experienced child loss at any point in their fatherhood journey, please let them know about Sad Dads Club. You can go to their website saddadsclub.org or follow them on instagram sad.dads.club

On this episode Justin and Devon talk about Justin's decision to leave the podcast.

We started this podcast as The Nashville Dads in 2022 after both having new kids in 2021. We started doing in person interviews in 2023 and went from 2 dads hanging out, to us learning about dad's stories and sharing them. In 2024 Devon moved to Denver and Justin moved to Murfreesboro and had his second child. This podcast went from an in person podcast to remote.

Back in May of 2025 Justin decided to take a break from recording episodes because the combination of work, being a dad, being a husband and trying to hold it all together left him spread too thin. We decided we'd check back in August and see what we should do moving forward.

Justin informed me that at this point in time he needs to prioritize his family and job and he doesn't have the mental space to do a podcast anymore. Also with switching to remote interviews, it feels different compared to meeting up in person to record.

I plan to keep this podcast going, keeping the name and the focus on curiosity and giving dads a space to talk about their lives. I don't plan on finding a new co-host because that wouldn't feel right to me. Dad Walks are still happening in Nashville and our friend Evan is doing a great job finding ways to get dads to connect in the Nashville area.

This podcast wouldn't exist without Justin. We wouldn't have known something like this could be possible when we started it. We wanted to start this because we wanted dads to know they aren't alone and they're worth listening to. That has always been the goal of this podcast, and Justin leaving the podcast means now I have to call Justin to get a pep talk to keep on doing the episode instead of you guys hearing him say it in the middle of the episode.

Justin. I have no idea if you ever look at the show notes, because I'm pretty sure you don't listen to any of the episodes because you always hated the sound of your own voice. Thanks for encouraging me to start this journey of a podcast and encouraging me to keep it going. Best of luck man. I'll keep your seat warm for ya.

Hey everyone! May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health for dads is a subject that comes up in a good majority of our episodes. When I was editing and listening through episodes I felt like releasing this episode earlier in our rotation for Mental Health Awareness month made a lot of sense.

This episode is with Mitchell Osmond of Dad Nation. Mitchell shares his story about how as a dad and husband he reached a point where he felt like he was living a life he wasn’t proud of. He talked to us about how he changed his habits and routines and how he now coaches dads on how to be more the person they want to be. In this episode Mitchell talks about the lows he felt when he was at rock bottom, and Justin talks about his struggles with going from 1 kid to 2 kids and all the roles you have to be in fatherhood. Mitchell also mentions that if you reach out to his company for coaching to make sure to mention that you heard about him on this podcast.

We will say over and over again that one of the points of this podcast is to let dads know they aren’t alone. Fatherhood makes you look in the mirror and a lot of us don’t like what we see when we do. We really hope if that’s your story, you know you’re not alone. There are lots of other dads just like you trying other figure out how to become the dad they want to be. And if you feel alone talk to a friend, or send us a message. Fatherhood can feel very isolating, but you aren’t alone. You’re never alone. And with that said, we hope you enjoy the episode.

Welcome to another Episode of the Nashville dads.

This week we have on Brian Elmquist and Zach Williams from the Lone Bellow. Brian is the first guest to ever name an episode, so this one will also be known as The Valley of the Diapers. We talked about how they ended up in Nashville, letting your kids fall at the playground, parenting books, dads and changing diapers, and sobriety. We're really appreciative of the guys for taking time for a phone call as they prepare to go on tour. And that they were willing to share so many stories about parenting and laughing with their families. Make sure to go see them at the Schermerhorn in Nashville on September 17th when they play with the symphony. We hope you enjoy the episode!

We talk about sports bringing your family together, loving soccer and doing a podcast about Nashville SC, and about his year of dealing with family health issues. Wes is having a year of extreme ups and downs, and he was really candid about what challenges he is facing this year while helping his wife recover from a medical event and being present for his 3 year old. For this episode we have on Justin’s friends. Chris, Aaron, Marcus , and Jason. A lot of this episode is the guys discussing how they met, became friends, ridiculous adventures they did together and how having kids changes the parties you throw. I’d like to think most of us have a group of friends we used to see all the time, but now get together once or twice a year. Having kids makes your life get a lot busier, but also makes you really appreciate the times you get together. This episode is a lot of that energy and also a lot of stories about Justin. For this episode, we have on the Executive Director of Autism Tennessee, Jessica Moore, and Mark Rembert, who leads Spectrum Dads.

Autism Tennessee Spectrum Dads is a welcoming space for father figures of Autistic children, youth, and adults to find community and belonging. In this episode, Mark discusses the group and also talks about his son Eric. Jessica tells about her two sons and how Autism Tennessee helps parents navigate an autism diagnosis to figure out resources and next steps.

April is Autism Acceptance Month in Tennessee.

One of the reasons we started this podcast is because, as a dad, you love your family, but you don't always know where you can find community. As a podcast, we help find communities and spotlight them in the hopes that dads know they don't have to go through fatherhood alone.

If you are looking for resources in the autism community in Middle Tennessee, call the Autism Tennessee HELPline at 615-270-2077. You can also go to their website, www.autismtn.org to find ways to donate, volunteer, and their event calendar.

Thanks again to Jessica and Mark for their time, and I hope you enjoy the episode.

Welcome to the Nashville Dads.

This week have on Ben Gatlin. We talk about camping, buying a new house, and the search for meaning and how to be the best version of yourself for your family.

We do have an extra note about this week’s podcast. Our goal here is to get to know dads in our city and if you’re a regular listener, you know we typically keep the topics light.
Today, we wanted to let you know that part of our conversation with Ben hits on a serious and potentially sensitive topic. In March 2023, Nashville experienced a school shooting and we’ve been grieving as a city ever since. Our guest today, Ben is on staff and sends his girls to this school.

We appreciate Ben addressing this topic during our time and if you’ve got little ears listening in or want to avoid this topic, we completely understand. We appreciate Ben and thank him for his openness. Thanks.
