Hormone Rants: Recent Episodes

Briana Villegas

The Hormone Rants podcast is for every woman who has accepted pain and discomfort as inherent to being a woman; or has denied any part of themselves to “make it” or feel accepted. Not only are we not taught how our bodies work, but once you start asking questions it is surprisingly difficult to find answers. I want to help change that. You deserve to understand how your body works because the pain, the mood swings, and the hormones ARE NOT YOUR PROBLEM. They are your body’s messengers! My name is Briana Villegas. I will be showing up here every week educating about menstrual health and mental health. I will be drawing on research and my own experience struggling with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder or PMDD to confront and change narratives around being a woman, being hormonal, and yes, PMSing.

Today I am talking with one of my very first coaching clients, Toni Hench who is a  biologist turned somatic sales coach. When we started working together she already had the knowledge. She knew how reproductive hormones work and had even taught it! What was missing though was how to implement. In this episode, Toni is catching me up on how her cycle syncing practice has up-leveled the way she does business.

If creativity and inspiration feel elusive, today’s episode is for you.

In this episode I talk about:

Does this describe you too? One week you are feeling inspired and confident. You know that you are going to crush your to-do list and any unexpected hurdles are just little hiccups. Nothing you can’t handle. Then the next week you don’t feel that spark. You aren’t getting near enough stuff done and you are dragging your feet through what you do accomplish. You're frustrated, annoyed and worst of all unmotivated to change anything about it. If this sounds familiar, this episode is for you.

In this week’s episode I talk about:

  • Why your current coping strategies are expanding the gap between the high and low productivity days
  • The 3 ingredients you need to stay motivated (and the one you are missing)
  • How working with your menstrual cycle will help you get strategic about how to use each phase to build momentum in your business.

Cycle syncing is gaining more visibility and with that comes more mainstream commentary on it. So in this episode we are exploring some of the recent critiques I've seen, such as:

  • Is it backed by scientific research?
  • How accurate can it be with all the cycle variation?
  • Is it really any better than the advice to eat whole foods and exercise?

I am not a parenting expert. I am fully in the trenches of motherhood (the early years). So Today's episode is a little different. Today, I am inviting you into the changes we have been making as a family in the last 6 months that have given me hope that it is possible to enjoy more of motherhood in real time. (Not just when the kids are sleeping. Not just when scrolling through photos of their adorable little faces. Not just in retrospect) And as always, I link it back to how understanding yourself and your cycle can help you make the changes that feel right for your family with more ease.

Expectations are the space between who we are and our ideal selves. When you have PMDD closing this gap can be expecially difficult because of how quickly you transition from your highest energy and motivation to your lowest.

In this episode I talk about how you can use cycle syncing as a guide to evaluate, set and re-negotiate your expectations.

I'm so excited to share with you a conversation that I had with another PMDD advocate today. Her name is Melissa Sue from @yogaforPMDD. She's such an empathetic human being, who is taking her own experience with PMDD in the suffering that she went through and the lessons that she learned along the way to give back and create such a welcoming and supportive PMD community for other people.

In this episode we cover:

  • The journey to getting a formal diagnosis
  • The role of viewing PMDD as an identity versus it being an experience that you have
  • And the role of therapeutic yoga in managing symptoms and finding their way back to their essential selves.

Tomorrow is April 1st, the start of PMD (Premenstrual Disorder) Awareness Month. In light of that, all month long I will be focusing on topics related to living with PMDD. Today's episode is all about Identity.

Identity is particulary important in the discussion of PMDD becuase onset of symptoms most commonly occurs during Puberty, Post-Partum, and Perimenopuase. During these transitions we not only experience changes in nuerological pathways but must redefine who we are in this next season of life.

As a result, we are particulary suscetipible during these windows to integrate PMDD and the symptoms that come with it into our identities.  Listen for tips on changing your perspective and weakening the connection between symptoms and your identity.

Today's episode is part two of my conversation with my husband Dan. Last week we talked a lot about how we navigated coping with PMDD when I was at its worst. Today's we are focusing a lot more on as I started to improve the symptoms and really embark on the healing journey. We talk about ways that we've had to navigate coping mechanisms that are still lingering; and ways that we continue to work with and adapt to and accommodate each other's differences.

In today's episode I share my opinion on hormonal birth control and what I believe many doctors leave out when talking through a risk - benefit assessment. I address questions like:

Does the pill regulate periods?
Is the IUD a better option?
Why should I bother with a period at all?
How can I support my body if I choose to stay on or to come off hormonal birth control?

Today's episode is really special. My sister was in town over the holidays and she agreed to record a coaching session with me.

She's brand new to cycle thinking, like I know many of you are, and our chat was so good that I had to break it up into two episodes.

Last episode we honed in on mindset and rest; and TODAY will be all about the tangible action steps for diet and exercise.

I hope you enjoy listening at least half as much as we enjoyed recording it!
