At the Entrepreneurship Institute, we believe that everyone can be entrepreneurial, and that entrepreneurial people can help make the world a better place by solving problems to create a healthier, smarter, more equal, and sustainable future.
Our role is to help all students, staff and alumni to develop an entrepreneurial mindset to help you become a more creative problem solver, develop skills that will make you more employable no matter what you want to do, come up with more disruptive and innovative ideas and start and scale successful startups.
We want people in the King’s community to develop the skills they need to imagine and design a better future, whether that’s within government, NGOs, corporate organisations and start-ups.
Entrepreneurship isn’t just about founding your own startup (but we can obviously help you with that too!) it’s about developing the mindset of a master problem solver.
You can decide to sit back and let the future happen to you, or go out and solve problems that create change and make the world a better place.
Professor Sebastien Ourselin FREng, is the Head of the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King’s College London. He is also Director of the Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Medical Engineering and Deputy Director of the London Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence Centre for Value Based Healthcare.
Alongside Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Seb is leading the establishment of a new MedTech Hub located at St Thomas’ campus. The Hub will bring academia, industry and the NHS together to develop healthcare technologies (including medical devices), resulting in workforce and operational improvements of global significance.
In this episode, we discuss the role that entrepreneurship can play in academia and explore why researchers, at all stages of their career, should become more entrepreneurial.

Emma is the founder of the Smile App which supports the mental health of families dealing with life threatening and long term health conditions.
Emma became passionate about this area through her own family's experiences with multiple health conditions and her work within the food allergy community. Her bestselling book 'Living With Allergies; Practical Tips For All the Family' was published in March 2019 and her children's book 'You, Me & Food Allergies' was published in 2020. Both are clinically reviewed and endorsed by Allergy UK.
She has appeared on This Morning, BBC News 24, LBC and BBC radio as well as regularly speaking at The Allergy & Free From Show and being a judge on The Free From Food Awards and Allergy UK Hero Awards. As a national features journalist, Emma has written for numerous publications including The Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Sun and The Metro.

Amy Lamé is an American-British writer, performer, TV and radio presenter known for her one-woman shows, her performance group Duckie, and LGBT-themed media works.
She was appointed by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, as the city's first "Night Czar" in November 2016, with the responsibility of promoting London's varied nightlife both in the UK and internationally, including safeguarding venues across the city.

David Walsh is the Entrepreneur in Residence at our Entrepreneurship Institute. He is a King’s alumnus (Human Environmental Science/Natural Sciences), leading entrepreneur, investor, technologist and founder and former CEO of KPMG Crimsonwing. After working at IBM, David founded Crimsonwing in 1996. The tech business made progress without capital or loans and built a solution centre in Malta in 1998 – virtually founding the IT industry there. In 2007 the group business, now operating in three countries, was floated and proceeds were used to expand the business through acquisitions and into new countries.

The Biomedical Engineering students Nitya Dintakurti and Shreya Kalyanasundaram developed a novel wearable medical device, CoolZEN. CoolZEN is a non-invasive, wearable medical device for menopausal women suffering from hot flashes, which automatically detects the onset of a hot flash and leverages a natural physiological response to bring relief. It provides a solution to a problem where there are very few non-pharmaceutical solutions. Ria Walia holds a BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Management and Finance from King’s College London, University of London. She has completed over 15 internships including Summer Trading Analyst (FX Options Structuring) at HSBC, Assurance at EY and Finance Analyst at Procter & Gamble. Ms Walia founded her first start-up at 17, raising and managing $100,000 of investment and organising 222 exhibition days at venues such as the Tate Modern and The British Museum. She was invited to the House of Lords for her start-up idea and named ‘Top 10 Student Start-up of the Year’ by Enterprise Nation. She has been awarded ‘Young Entrepreneur’ at the Youth Awards and named the 14th most influential student in the UK. In her spare time, Ria runs a Blog, Instagram Page and YouTube Channel, sharing her experiences in the hope to help and support other students with early careers and entrepreneurship. Ismail Jeilani is a King’s College London alumni, and the co-founder and CEO at Scoodle, a platform that connects students and tutors. During his time at King's, Ismail didn't take out a student loan to pay for his degree, instead, he built his first business, teaching economics. Hardly anybody turned up to his first class because no one knew who he was. So when he built Scoodle, he set out to create the Kim Kardashians of education, superstar educators with millions of followers.

During her third year studying medicine at King's College London, Aysha Ingar won the university's 2019 Idea Factory competition with her idea for Muslimah - the first app tailored specifically for Muslim women and their Islamic needs. In addition to gaining support and guidance from the Entrepreneurship Institute team, Aysha won £2,000 to help get her business off the ground.
Aysha then went on to be selected for the prestigious King's20 Accelerator programme, where she continued to build and grow Muslimah.

In the first episode of Disruptors, host Rachel Stockey chats to Josephine Philips. Josephine graduated from King's with a degree in Physics and Philosophy. In her final year she had an idea for Sojo - think Deliveroo but for clothing alterations. Josephine took part in the Entrepreneurship Institute's Women Entrepreneurs Programme and continued to develop her idea for Sojo through the Idea Factory competition, which she won in 2020. Having her idea validated inspired Josephine to make the business a reality, and she went on to be selected for the prestigious King's20 Accelerator programme with Sojo.
