In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Tom Loarie talks with Catherine Harrington, PhD Renown as an innovator in organization psychology, Dr. Catherine Harrington’s work has profoundly impacted countless lives and organizations. That said, her own journey is nothing short of extraordinary. After earning her doctorate, Catherine found her true calling in executive search and organizational psychology, helping organizations and individuals thrive together. Host Tom Loarie, in his role as CEO of a venture-funded medical startup at the time, experienced Catherine’s work first-hand and saw what a profound difference she made in his company. In a similar way to how a doctor guides a patient to health, she guided the company to organizational health through a combination of clearly understanding the company’s objective and purpose, taking the time to literally walk around, engage and listen to individual employees at all levels, and evaluating the results. Again like a doctor, Dr. Harrington then made recommendations that would improve the health of the organization. This happened over time, as she continued to observe, engage, “take the temperature” and evaluate results. Catherine’s success in implementing innovative programs that transformed the company culture were so powerful that the company achieved an employee turnover rate of 80% BELOW the Silicon Valley average! In this episode, Tom and Catherine will explore the strategies that drove these remarkable results and how Catherine’s approach to communication, culture and individual empowerment can serve as a model for any organization—from small business, family, nonprofit to large corporation. You’ll learn insights that can transform YOUR company (or nonprofit or even family) culture for lasting success. Listen to our radio podcast anywhere, any time, on any platform, click here!

In this episode, THE MENTORS RADIO Host Dan Hesse talks with Jimmy Roberts, a 15-time Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and writer for ESPN and ABC Sports, about how athletes break out of slumps. Jimmy Roberts has had what most people would think of as an interesting run. During a 30-year career in network television, he has spoken at the United Nations, and interviewed a convicted murderer behind the walls of Attica State Penitentiary. He has traveled with the heavyweight boxing champion to meetings with Nelson Mandela in Soweto and the Pope at the Vatican … and had dinner at the White House with the president of the United States. That said, he is primarily known as a sports reporter who has chronicled 19 Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the NBA Finals, Wimbledon, and, of course golf, where he has covered more than 70 major championships, 15 Ryder Cups, and since 2012 has been the signature voice of Augusta National’s acclaimed digital platform MASTERS.COM.
Roberts has earned numerous distinctions, including a Golf Writers Association of America award, The Metropolitan Golf Association Distinguished Service Award, and the Lincoln Werden Journalism medal.
He is also a prolific writer. For two decades Roberts has been the featured back page columnist for Met Golfer (NY) Magazine. His most recent book, the bestseller “NO ONE WINS ALONE” (Simon & Schuster,) written in 2021 with hockey legend Mark Messier, discusses motivation and performance lessons from one of professional sports greatest leaders.
In 2009, Harper Collins published his first book, Breaking the Slump, which tells the story of how some of the best golfers to ever play the game – as well as one former president and one Olympic gold medalist – dug themselves out of career-threatening dry spells. The book was critically praised in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Sports Illustrated.
“Jimmy Roberts has always been a wonderful storyteller, touching the hearts and challenging the minds of viewers,” said legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.
Roberts often speaks about the book, which he understands has a universality to it: “As golfers, we’re all really the same. There are two types of us in this world; those who’ve had a slump, and those who are going to have (at least) one. And it’s a matter of degree. When Jack Nicklaus struggles, he loses the ball to the left. When I struggle, I just… lose the ball.” Roberts also came to realize in writing this book – ostensibly about golf – that it really was something that had nothing to do with the game; it was a book about how successful people handled adversity. For the last 24 years, Roberts has been a fixture on NBC, where this summer he will report from the Paris Olympic Games. In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Host Dan Hesse talks with Robert Parker, a man widely considered the most powerful critic of any genre in history, about changing careers to pursue a passion. Pulitzer-prize winning media critic David Shaw, in his two-part Front Page profile for the Los Angeles Times, called wine critic Robert Parker “the most powerful critic of any kind, anywhere.” Parker’s impact on the wine world has been unrivaled, and many others agree that no critic of any genre, be it theatre, movies, music, art or fashion, has been as influential in their industry as Robert Parker has been in wine. Internationally acclaimed and recognized, Parker is the only wine critic ever awarded France’s highest Presidential honor, which he received twice, from France’s Presidents Chirac and Mitterrand. Robert was the first critic given Italy’s top honor by Italy’s President Berlusconi. He was also the first critic given Spain’s highest civilian honor by King Juan Carlos. Even though his influence is global, being hounded by paparazzi when he’d visit places like Japan, Robert Parker is an American writer who has had an enormous impact on America’s interest in and fascination with wine, and many say he’s been a major influence on how wine tastes and is made today. In this episode, The Mentors Radio Host Dan Hesse talks with Andy Reid, Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs who brought the Chiefs to win two Super Bowls (so far) and who trails only Bill Belichick in career victories among active NFL coaches. Reid is considered an Offensive mastermind. His Chiefs have won seven consecutive AFC West titles and hosted five consecutive AFC championship games. But the enduring take-away is not the victories alone, it’s what goes on behind-the-scenes to prepare for and achieve those victories. Of course it’s about continuously learning, observing, honing in on player expertise and strategies… But that’s not enough. For Reid, it’s about knowing people, how a player is best motivated, how to build a genuine sense of team, and most importantly, it’s about mentoring. For him, success in life comes from teaching others. He lives what he believes; 11 NFL head coaches were mentored by Andy Reid, as branches on his famous “coaching tree.” You’ll learn all this and more to help YOU take YOUR dream to the next level.

In today’s episode of The Mentors Radio Host Dan Hesse talks with Jack Swarbrick, Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame (UND) about his unlikely—and unexpected—transition from a 28-year career with the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels (he was made partner in 1987), to become UND’s 12th Athletics Director in 2008. He’s now in his 15th year as the James E. Rohr Director of Athletics (AD) at Univ. of Notre Dame.
Born in Yonkers, NY, and raised in Yonkers and Bloomington, IN, Swarbrick is a 1976 magna cum laude graduate of Notre Dame, with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Upon graduating from Stanford University Law School in 1980, he accepted a position as an associate in the Indianapolis law firm Baker & Daniels. He and his wife, Kimberly, have four now-grown children and a growing number of grandchildren.
In this episode, you’ll learn how Swarbrick’s career took a surprising and successful turn; life-changing advice he’s taken to heart along the way; and the importance of good character, good leadership, loving what you do, and staying open to opportunities!
Jack and Dan discuss new initiatives in college athletics, how to mentor and develop character, and how to choose the right leader for any position—critical skills both in athletics and in business.
An outspoken critic of recent changes in college sports — including “Name, Image and Likeness” of student athletes, and the “Transfer Portal” — Jack discusses with Dan how these money-driven programs can reduce a University’s ability to genuinely mentor students and, most importantly, to develop character. They also discuss Jack’s call for the NFL and NBA to allow 18-year olds to pursue a professional path after high school, instead of attending college, in order to avoid collegiate athletics becoming little more than the minor leagues. You’ll also learn about Jack’s mentors and more!

In this week’s episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with James “Bob” Hagerty, the Wall Street Journal‘s only full-time obituary columnist, regarding how to tell your own life story. Over the past 40 years, Hagerty has worked as a reporter, editor and bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal. Today, he is the paper’s only full-time obituary writer. Each week, he writes three or four obituaries examining extraordinary lives he’s discovered—both the famous and the obscure. He finds it absolutely inspiring!
One of Hagerty’s articles — regarding “an obituary writer writes one for himself”— yielded such an outpouring of reader responses, that it inspired his most recent book, Yours Truly: An Obituary Writer’s Guide to Telling Your Story. In this episode Hagerty talks about what’s he has learned from writing obituaries and how to make sure your life story is not boiled down to just a few lines after you die. Leaving things to chance, your obituary is almost certain to be solemn, formulaic and full of errors… but you can have the last word!

SHOW NOTES:James “Bob” Hagerty:
Imagine trying to herd cats. Even worse, try to herd cats in a crisis! In this episode of The Mentors Radio, Host Dan Hesse talks with former U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thad Allen about leadership during a crisis. Whether it’s a business crisis, family crisis, natural disaster, supply chain nightmare, government-mandated pandemic shutdown or something else, ethical leadership can make all the difference in ultimately navigating to “safe shores.” Our guest mentor today, Thad Allen, has a lot to share about leadership and crisis leadership.
During his Coast Guard career, Allen was asked by two U.S. Presidents to take over leadership of the Federal response to two monumental crises—the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. To achieve resolution in each of these disasters required bringing together a wide swath of diverse constituencies—each with their own focus, concerns, habits of communication and pain points. No easy task. Allen was so successful in his efforts that he became known in some circles as “the master of disaster.”
Allen also led the Atlantic Coast Guard forces in response to the 9/11 attacks and coordinated the U.S. Coast Guard response to a major Haitian earthquake.
But what was Allen’s secret for bringing very diverse groups together, leading them to work together to achieve a common goal? How did he herd cats in a crisis? Among other things you’ll learn that one of the first things he does—every time, in every disaster with which he was involved—is to focus first on forging a unity of purpose and a culture of compassion. Yes. People First. Every Time! That required hyper-focused listening, clarity of assessment, finding the common threads and building on those, and… did we mention listening, putting people first?!!
The lessons and experiences Thad Allen shares in this episode are worth more than gold for any human on the planet—in business, work, life, anywhere, anytime… and for cats too, if they’d only listen. FANTASTIC LEARNING and MENTORING in this episode!
SHOW NOTES:THAD ALLEN:
In this episode, The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie talks with Howard Root, founder and CEO of Vascular Solutions, and author of the book “Cardiac Arrest: Five heart-stopping years on the Fed’s Hit List”. Root shares his harrowing fight—and win—against Federal Department of Justice prosecutors who abused their power beyond all imagination. That was in 2011!
The Feds’ unsuccessful attempt to put Root behind bars and destroy his company was ruthless. They used the justice system to distort justice and abuse individual liberties guaranteed by the Constitution.
Five years later, in 2016, after shelling out $25 million in legal costs, Howard Root won a UNANIMOUS acquittal. Even more disturbing than these five years of unwarranted persecution by the Federal Department of Justice, the jurors expressed shock and outrage that these charges were ever filed against Root in the first place!
After the grueling journey and ultimate victory against the Feds, Root knew the Feds could target his company again, repeat their horrific injustices and violations of Constitutional rights and he did not want to jeopardize his company or its employees. He sold the company—which, at that time, was one of the most innovative and prolific medical device companies of its kind, and pursues other interests. He also helps other CEOs unjustly targeted and pursued by the Feds whenever asked for advice.
This is a modern day David beats Goliath story, and it could affect you! Now more than ever.
Learn what you can do to protect yourself and your company.
