Host Erin Gibb is a therapist, clinical supervisor, group practice owner, Therapist Fulfillment Coach, and early adopter of the weird and wonderful.
Through interviews with relatable guests, controversial outside-the-box thinkers, solo episodes, and coaching demos, you'll see how therapists are uniquely conditioned for fear, responsibility and unfulfillment. Therapist Expanded then points the way to reaching past industry constraints to the source of our creative power, because when we therapists dare to live our deepest dreams, we start a mental health revolution.
Wondering how living your core desires freely and fully could start a mental health revolution? Well as Carl Jung said, we'll only take our clients as far as we've gone, and your host has seen the incredible growth of those surrounding a therapist when they courageously dream outside of their conditioning.
So are you curious yet? Join us and let's expand together and watch our field grow!

In this episode we discuss:
Renelle Bourdage, Psychotherapist and researcher in clinical neuropsychology shares with us her story of how she took huge steps to live outside of her conditioning. First by realizing she was stuck in an unsustainable agency model, and then noticing others were not recognizing this problem.
She believed she was powerless in making systemic change, and ultimately reached profound burn out. From this place she saw she needed to make significant changes and she gave herself permission to take the leap.
When she couldn’t keep up with all the demands, whether realistic or perceived, Renelle realized she was stuck in the rhythm of the treadmill with no end, never moving forward.
She felt the speed and structure of the way the agency model was set up to get clients off the waitlist, and she felt like she needed to be a miracle worker within a certain amount of sessions. Then getting them 'out the door' while working with their complex mental health diagnoses and managing a large caseload.
She shares that it led to a high burnout rate with no end, like being on that treadmill while never moving forward.
She realized it's also no one's fault, no one’s wrong. It's an unsustainable system and agency model that ultimately leads to compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and leaving therapists feeling depleted.
Thanks for listening!

Erin starts by recapping the last episode about setting a Thrive Fee, and she highly recommends that if you haven’t listened to that episode, start there and return to this one. Part of her recap for those of you who’ve heard that episode is to remind the listener about the ways that therapists and helping professionals usually set their fees:
Erin shares how unfortunately even when people have done the process to discover their Thrive Fee, they often revert back to the mindsets above and have a hard time actually implementing what they need to really stay well and thrive.
She shares a quote about how people will not necessarily get what they dream of, they’ll get what they tolerate. If you want to know what you’re tolerating, look around at the areas of your life you’re not satisfied with.
Erin believes the Thrive Fee is the answer to ending a lot of this toleration, and she gives some tips for not fudging the numbers and for considering new markets along with not owning what others can pay. She recommends a Google search to show your mind that people are paying what you may be afraid to charge (and especially in other areas of your own region or state that can be marketed to for virtual therapy clients).
She lays out the State, Story, Strategy method to help with actually implementing the new fee. Shifting your state shifts your story which shifts your strategy (you now have access to more options in terms of marketing and setting the Thrive Fee starts to feel more possible, while different ideas arise compared to the state of resistance, fear, and stress).
Erin shares how money story is essential to look at here, and that she shifted her money story by making an investment beyond her consciousness at the time. She spent 70K+ on coaching and it rewired her money story (it was absolutely terrifying). She explains why she actually made this investment and did not expect her money stories to be so affected.
She ends with an uplifting message about what’s truly possible for fee setting in order to help you expand your mind (i.e. people charging a million dollars for their coaching).
Erin shares that she hopes you’ll keep following along on her various platforms to receive a 100% promo code to a Therapist Fulfillment Activation she’s launching at the end of April. Stay tuned!

Erin starts by reading what she recently wrote to her email list about the topic of fee setting in order to set the stage for the topic and act as an outline.
She goes further say that this is likely a part 1, and that she’s going to cover how people usually set their fees, a Thrive Fee system she teaches, and then briefly why people don’t usually set their fees according to the system she lays out (i.e. the blocks or pitfalls). She shares how in the next fee setting episode she’ll cover more about the topic of how to actually approach implementing the Thrive Fee (and she alludes to that it’s about State, Story, and Strategy), and one of the ways she overcame her money stories by investing in herself.
Erin lays out how she’s been supporting therapists to set fees since 2017, and how therapists usually look to what she calls Worth, Value, Comparison and Fantasy as ways to set fees - and how these do not really work to create a sustainable and THRIVING life for the therapist or helping professional. She also shares that when she started setting her own fees in 2016 she did all the things she now cautions against.
Erin defines the four ways people usually set their fees:
Setting too low a fee starts to become a problem pretty fast, and then it affects our ability to stay well and affects the work.
Erin feels like it’s almost an emergency in her body when she sees therapists setting their fee too low for their needs because of the stories related to them needing to increase their worth/value first (i.e. they are setting based on what feels the most comfortable short term and sacrificing their long-term wellness).
Setting a Thrive Fee:
Once you have the number, prepare for that you will likely want to start fudging the numbers and rely back on the 4 factors mentioned above. Remeber this may be uncomfortable in the short term but look to the long-term and remember not setting a Thrive Fee turns into a problem over time.
Stay tuned for the next episode on fees to help you get into the state, story and strategy needed to actually make this change to charging a Thrive Fee.

In this solo episode Erin talks about the theme of Power that completes the two-sided coin of power and responsibility she believes we need to be aware of in order to live the internal blueprint path of our fulfillment.

Erin begins the episode explaining how power relates to her mission of mental health revolution, and this two-sided coin of fulfillment and walking the inner path of our desires, relates to how power and responsibility utilized consciously means we can follow the path of our deepest desires. Misused power or over-responsibility means we consistently walk off of our path of fulfillment.
She normalizes us waffling on that path and how we can check in with whether we’re holding full self-responsibility and stepping into our power, or we’re trying to use force, giving away power, or perhaps holding responsibility for others.
Erin describes through her own recent life experiences and stories the difference between power and force. She uses the opportunity here to model sharing openly as powerful. She uses the words “painful exorcism…living in a house of mirrors” about her experience as of late with the journey of Therapist Expanded unfolding.
She describes the nature of her power shoulders and the release of testosterone during what people call power poses, and how teaching assertiveness to clients as therapists is an example of the difficulty we can all have discerning power and force (like discerning assertiveness and aggression).
Erin goes on to talk about how power is truly vulnerable and speaks about Brene Brown and reads this quote from Juliet Trnka; “So asking for what you want starts to look like a really powerful tool to create the life you would love! It’s also super vulnerable! Most of us carry the residue of trauma around the ‘wrongness’ of asking.”
She describes her recent realizations in launching Therapist Expanded and the feelings of this 'trauma residue' and yet choosing to step into her power anyway.
She ends with saying that you uplevel the entire world by stepping into your power.

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! In this solo episode, Erin talks about the theme of Responsibility (or better stated over-responsibility), and the impossible bind in our field between working to help people empower themselves AND being asked to be responsible for them (under threat of disciplinary action, being sued, etc.).

Erin begins by reading a powerful social media post that provides a framework and a summary for this episode.
She tells a story about a woman on Facebook sharing her screen in a group to show a course that was mandatory for her because her client died by suicide - she either took that course or could not practice.
Erin lays out the ways this over-responsibility is conditioned in childhood in a deeply codependent culture, especially in a society that encourages being liked and nice, over being safe.
Erin normalizes the role the ego plays in this over-responsibility, and the stories we tell ourselves about why we do and don’t do things based on others (and she lays out the truth of where we actually act from - hint: it’s not about others).
She described her clinical supervisor’s mic drop share about how he’s stayed well in this field for 50 years (!!); he acts responsibly and doesn’t take responsibility! This changed Erin’s life and she describes how.
Erin shares stories about how ending the responsibility trap is an evolving journey of trying to not take responsibility for what’s outside of herself. As well as how taking full responsibility for ourselves and our greatness is the truest gift to us and the world.
She ends with a question: If any story about how your greatness or your desires will hurt others is holding you back, can you surrender responsibility for what isn’t yours, and be a loving stand for freedom instead?

Betti Delorey offers intuitive guidance sessions where she connects with spirit guides, passed loved ones, and ancestors, to direct you to what needs your attention. Betti works from a place of her Indigenous cultural values passed down to her by her mother, grandmother and aunties, and empowers people to act as their own innate guides so that they can access healing on their own, in their own time, and in their own way.
This episode is mainly focused on introducing the concept of creating ‘from’. Erin explains how we’re trained to set goals in North America, especially as high achievers, to think about where we’re creating ‘to’ and how to get there, which opens up the mind to think about all the ways that what we’re trying to achieve is impossible. This episode really navigates through the idea that we need to create a state of being or positive feeling and then vision the goal we want ‘from’ that positive feeling in order for us to create a pathway ‘to’ that state of being or feeling!
Here’s a breakdown of Erin’s episode with Betti:
3:53 – Betti shares how she would like some help working through her belief system
7:48 – Betti speaks about her fear of rejection and how she handles criticism because of her belief system
10:03 – Betti talks about her return to work after a traumatic experience and how it affected her in a way where she lost touch with a lot of the things that she knew to be true about her beliefs, and how she works with clients
14:17 – Erin guides Betti through a short experiencing task to help guide her through these feelings that are holding her back and keeping her stuck in fear
17:38 – Betti discusses her journey, and how it was difficult to reach her destination, and how she realized she’s craving feelings of joy
24:50 – Erin and Betti speak about Betti’s progress with becoming comfortable with the uncertainty of starting her business and the general uncertainty life brings
31:47 – Betti speaks about her realization that when you put down and set aside heavier energies you create more space for those joy and content pieces to enter into your daily life

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! Today I’m doing a solo episode.
I start the episode by reading my new years message from my Therapist Expanded Facebook page to you my amazing audience. I’d be honoured if you’d checkout my Facebook page and become a follower <3
Here are the steps to deciding who you want to be in 2023:
Steps:
I share my cue card strategy for the first moments upon waking to remind myself of the identity I am embodying and where I’m creating from. This is so important for the reasons above, but also because the first few moments when we wake up we’re in the doorway between the conscious and subconscious mind (our brain waves are different than normal waking life) and that doorway is wide open because sleep suppresses the analytical mind, so we are highly programmable.
I share a study about the four groups and piano learning and make the case that rehearsal is so important so we don’t randomly do things and hope for change or sleepwalk through life - instead we become who we want to be and create from our deepest desires.

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! Today I’m interviewing Reina Lombardi. Reina shares her background in Expressive therapies Reina is a group practice owner and trains and consults with other therapists who want to create a private practice or entrepreneurial arm to their creative therapy practice. She outlines how she got into training other therapists because there’s a lot of fear of getting into private practice because of concerns for stability, and how working in agencies does not necessarily support sustainability. Reina shares a story of working at an agency and having her salary cut to under 30k per year! Reina explains how in private practice you actually have more control over your energy, stability, and sustainability - ‘making your own way’. She felt terrified to start her podcast and for months recorded and deleted. We briefly touched on the great designation and how there’s a lot of turnover in the profession, and the adage that makes Reina sick: “you didn’t get into this for the money” Reina shares the setting of “allowable” rates by insurance companies and how some insurance companies cut their rates and otherwise many have not increased their rates in 15 years! She explains the “pressure cooker environment” and how this relates to unsustainable amounts of client sessions needed to make ends meet in this model, and how that relates to not being able to take breaks on a 7-8 hour face-to-face client day to meet billable requirements for the week. Ultimately resulting in turnover and resignation. In her clinical supervision work she makes it clear to therapists (especially those who hire her and work in agencies) that it’s not them, it’s the system. She wondered in her earlier career why she wasn’t staying with organizations for more than a year or two and she wondered if there was something wrong with her, and she realized the truth over time that the rage and fire in her was saying to get out and take care of herself. There are many of us with similar stories of leaving agency work and overcoming the burnout and toxic environments to thrive. I share the question I use to differentiate heart from ego centered motivations, especially when I feel fear: ‘What’s worth being criticized for?’ and Reina shares she’ll be writing down the question and using it to discern as well. Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! Today I’m interviewing Dr. Nicola DePaul. Nicola shares her personal passions and her professional passion for clinician wellness She goes on to describe how her past work focused on thinking globally and acting locally, as well as how her own vulnerable journey with burnout now informs her work and life Nicola describes how she’s implemented boundaries in a field that asks for self-sacrifice, and that unlearning that self-sacrifice and that burnout is a wakeup call (once someone is ready to see they’re experiencing burnout) Nicola shares that she works with healthcare leaders and how important, easeful, and empowering it is to focus on what’s within a their control I share my supervisor’s question that helps prevent burnout: Am I acting responsibly or taking responsibility? Nicola describes what acting responsibly looks like in her work. She mentions the loss of physicians in her organization and how that relates to not hearing the basic concerns of those physicians and how that has big impacts on morale and more when a physician leaves an organization We discuss the use of anonymous surveys to gauge employee needs and improve morale Nicola describes her core value of openness and how sharing our own mental health struggles as clinicians within organizations is important, and that some organizational cultures do not support this. We discussed the difficulties of being a graduate student and how the hierarchical, less-than conditioning of being a student, and then entering a field that is full of trauma and gives out rewards for overworking, really fosters some of these challenges We discuss the books Clockwork and The Big Leap Nicola shares what mental health REVOLUTION means to her (it’s about empowerment and living in the zone of genius, and that a person’s contribution is so much more expansive showing up this way than in the societal expectations of pleasing and self-sacrifice). We explored her journey to showing up radically transparent in her relationships so others can have her actually in their lives. She shares that hosting her own podcast Menders is what she’s meant to do, and allows her to create artwork in relationship Nicola shares her perspective on failure and how this is leading to exciting new horizons Checkout Nicola's Podcast https://mendersloveleadershipinhealthsystems.buzzsprout.com/ (Menders: Love & leadership in Health Systems)

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! Today I’m interviewing Natalie McCrory. Natalie begins by sharing that she’s going unscripted and will allow whatever is meant to arise to do so Natalie shares her amazing journey of working in the Canadian arctic as a social worker She describes living in a remote community with a rich culture and cultural history, as well as a devastating history of colonization Natalie lived in the town where Nanook of the North was filmed and describes how her life and career were shaped by her experience in the Canadian North, and how this imparted a deep humility Natalie describes how her 27 year journey as a therapist has unfolded in ways she could have never expected, including her first counselling experience, how her flow state comes about in 1:1 work, and how she landed in private practice How the most profound healing happens when people remember the innate things that they forgot and then remember what they already knew about themselves that then leads to joy, peace, and something to hold onto to get them through struggles Natalie describes how life will remind her to be humble when she forgets, and how it’s deep in her heart and being to support Indigenous people How Natalie has turned to Indigenous people when lost literally and metaphorically Natalie shares her passion for connecting therapists with one another and creating a network to step into community and connection The destigmatization of mental health and empowerment of clients and therapists was discussed How therapists often enter the field because we’ve had our own pain and trauma and what it means to walk the walk with our own care to be present for our families and our clients, and how many of the people Natalie supports are therapists The importance of seeing, speaking, and living our truth Natalie shares how she didn’t see the truth at first when in an abusive relationship and what happened when her eyes were opened and she stepped into truth, courage, alignment, and starting over Natalie thanks all of you, and shares her hope that her story and vulnerability will touch future generations

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! In this episode I do a coaching episode with my close friend and business partner Julia Rushlow. Julia is a talented and unique Play Therapist who specializes in working with children, parents and families using Non-Directive Play, Sand, and her amazing intuitive gifts. In this episode, Julia vulnerably shares her fears, doubts, and blocks about her recent launch, and she realizes how these mirror the feelings of the parents she’s serving (namely aloneness, self-doubt, self-judgment, and failure) Through coaching we get to the core concern that Julia is having and then use mindful-experiential methods for her to reach past the fears, concerns, and conditioning that cast doubt on her dreams Julia sees a clear vision of the feeling, energy, and embodiment state of her core desires and this is where she needs to create from We discuss how she can use this as a guidepost when she feels the conditioning pop back up in order to clarify her next steps and re-align her with her deeper mission and heart-based vision, rather than following what the fear and self-doubt would direct her to do

Julia is a talented and unique Play Therapist who specializes in working with children, parents and families using Non-Directive Play, Sand, and her amazing intuitive gifts. Julia walks us through her life as a therapist before and after a transformational shift she made both personally and professionally after a 15-day play therapy training We discuss the shift from putting clients first to putting the clinician first and how that benefits everyone involved Julia details the 100+ consultation calls she’s had with parents in recent months and how the work she’s done is unique and in demand resulting in waitlists, but how that interest isn’t translating into her offers for parent groups We look at some of the factors holding parents back from signing up, as well as what's holding Julia back We pick up more on this topic in the next episode where Erin provides coaching on the topic with Julia

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! Today I’m interviewing Katrina James: We look at how the frame or story around our human experience as individuals shapes our reality How the reframe came first from photography for Katrina and how the zoom-in or out works in human psychology and neuroscience (particularly during EMDR) Katrina spoke about how reframing works in the case of entrepreneurs who can get stuck feeling like they and they alone can do things in their business Katrina’s concept of burning down the house and starting fresh to revolutionize mental health, and how the shifts towards de-stigmatizing mental health in the younger generations may mean we don’t have to burn the whole mental health establishment down just yet Indoctrination of therapists happens at different levels and we discussed how this relates to Katrina’s concept of living someone else’s life and how she helps entrepreneurs, and how Therapist Expanded is here to help therapists wake up from the dream of what we ‘should’ do in the field, and instead follow our dreams and desires to live our own life freely and fully A discussion of risk taking and burning things down in our own lives shows how we have overcome the safety messages, and Katrina shared specific examples of where she has let go of living other people’s idea of what her life should be I shared my black sheep origins and how I pulled away from people and things to not be held down by feeling rejection The common misconceptions around fear (particularly for entrepreneurs) My ultimate reframe with fear and the way I got to my current relationship with fear and risk-taking as exhilarating instead of paralyzing (hint - I now turn towards pain and fear after the type of meditation I mention in the podcast taught me how) Katrina has an ah-ha about what she’s holding herself back from and where her deepest desire to act is centred We end with the power of belonging and modeling to face fear with others

Welcome back to Therapist Expanded! In this solo episode I: Do a brief intro about myself and a teaser for my https://therapistexpanded.com/about/ (professional bio) and for my personal bio that will be in an episode to come (my personal story of moving from a trauma and addiction focused life to healing and becoming a mindful-experiential therapist, clinical supervisor, group practice owner, innovator, and now a Fulfillment Coach for Therapists) I lay out who the show is for: therapists being educated, new therapists, therapists in the ‘it’s not you it’s me’ phase in their career, in the ‘it’s not me it’s you phase’, therapists done tolerating, therapists living what on paper is the dream but not feeling as fulfilled as they’ve been promised, and therapists relatively happy but with a huge dream they’re ready to set free into the world. Even people outside of therapy like doctors, nurses, and coaches who can apply the same principles to expand beyond their industry conditioning. I present the vision: No matter where listeners are in their career, my goal is to present the knowing that we are at the heart of mental health revolution when we live freely and fully and I’m here to support others because one thing no one can do is convince me of their limitations. Laying out the framework for starting with the end in mind for the podcast (a way to vision and to lay the mind to rest and create from the deeper place of Being and how that changed what I saw in terms of the podcast vision). Here is my blog post with a https://therapistexpanded.com/starting-with-the-end-in-mind/ (step-by-step process) for this type of visioning to bring your dreams to life. The strategy for how I'll deliver this content: covering topics like expansion, power, responsibility, abundance, freedom, desire, self-saboutage and limitlessness through solo episodes, coaching, and in interviews where guests are doing the things other might say are impossible in our field and the healthcare field as a whole. Some important things I touch on: The question to clarify deepest desires from other desires, “what's worth being criticized for?”; https://therapistexpanded.com/starting-with-the-end-in-mind/ (the blog post with the visioning framework link); and my Monday MINDUPS
