In case you need reminding, you’re standing on a mountain of knowledge. You know so much about your industry. So why not share it by becoming your industry’s spokesperson? Become the face and voice of your industry. Today, thanks to Media Stable’s Nic Hayes, you’ll discover exactly how. It’s an opinion-leading episode 622 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Media Stable’s Nic Hayes …Following positive feedback to my recent interview with Joshua Del Pozo, the Chief of Staff for The Today Show, I figured you guys are keen to learn more about how to become a media spokesperson for your industry, which of course requires some media training.

And who better to give it to than Nic Hayes, the founder of Media Stable, a business he started in 2012 that connects media with experts and which has become the preferred source of media talent in Australia. Media Stable is also the leading resource for business owners who want to become media savvy and get exposure for their business along the way. Nic is also the founder of Expert Registry, an online media training resource.

To provide real life case studies of business owners who’ve been through and benefited from Nic’s training, we’re also joined by financial planner Sarah Wells and Online Agency owner Nicole Jamieson.

If free media exposure for yourself and your business appeals, then grab a notebook, as this really is a masterclass. Topics covered include:

  1. Why is becoming a media spokesperson smart marketing?
  2. Who’s it suited to?
  3. Where are the media opportunities in 2023 and beyond?
  4. How to generate stories the media want to cover
  5. How to manage a media opportunity

I started off by asking Nic to define the media in 2023.

Oh Crap! It’s OK, I didn’t do something stupid (for once!) … Oh Crap is actually the name of my guest’s business. Can you guess what they do? Plumber? Toilet manufacturer? Anger management consultant? Maybe! What I can tel you is they use super simple marketing to grow exponentially. It’s a shitty episode 621 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Oh Crap Co-Founder Henry Reith …Henry Reith started his entrepreneurial journey when he was 16, starting a dry stone wall business in the UK. From there, he went on to run business networking events around the world, and started a media company along the way.

Now he manufactures and sells fully compostable dog poo bags as the co-founder of the Oh Crap brand! You gotta love a good pivot or two!

Using his deep understanding of marketing, Henry exploded the company’s growth, leading Oh Crap! from a small family business to revolutionising the dog poop bags industry in Australia, with the Oh Crap Family (that’s what he calls his customers) now having saved 32 million dog poop bags from landfill.

Appearing in the Australian Financial Review’s Fast Start list in 2021, and with just four employees, Oh Crap is on a mission to save the world, one dog poo at a time.

I started off by asking Henry how he came to part own dog poo bag company … a question you don’t get to ask every day of the week!

SEO best practice for 2023 from Australia’s most-awarded SEO expert Harry Sanders … that’s what we’re talking about! Oh, and his first tip covers the rise and impact of AI in the SEO world, so I was just a little excited (no, actually I was bursting!) to hear all about it, as ChatGPT* has occupied far too much of my time these past two weeks! It’s an artificially intelligent episode 620 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.A little more about SEO Expert Harry Sanders …*You’ve met today’s guest, SEO expert Harry Sanders twice before.

First time was in episode 520 where he shared his rags to riches story of founding Australia’s most successful SEO agency.

Then in episode 521 where he kindly answered about 32 of your most pressing SEO questions.

For those of you who are wondering “Who the hell is Harry Sanders?!”, well, he’s the founder of StudioHawk, Australia’s largest dedicated SEO agency. He’s been named in the Forbes 30 Under 30, named B&T’s Entrepreneur of The Year, has starred on UK TV, and won the Australian Business Award for Marketing Innovation, plus he’s been awarded the Best Large SEO Agency at the Global Search Awards in 2021.

All this by the ripe old age of 25.

And now he’s back to share his top 5 tips for getting on page 1 of Google in 2023 and beyond.

I was bursting to do this interview, as one of his top 5 tips is all about AI … and over the break I got completely lost in ChatGPT. So that … is exactly where we started!

I’m about to say one of the scariest (and I think) most exciting words in business. Are you ready? Creativity. You see, when you spend quality time thinking differently about your business, amazing things happen, the least of which is that you create a solid point-of-difference. But don’t take my word for it … Let’s hear from one of Sydney’s leading new restaurateurs for whom creativity is his super power. It’s a scary episode 619 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with Tim Reid. A little more about Sydney restaurateur Howin Chui …Firstly, a quick rant on creativity.

Having spent the first half of my career in the Account Service department of large advertising agencies looking after big brands like Gillette, Yellow Pages & Dulux, I quickly learnt about the power of creative thinking. About the power a big idea can have on a business’s growth and success.

In fact, sitting at the top of every client invoice was a cost centre titled Concept Development. This was the amount the client paid for their Creative Team to sit around and come up with ideas in response to a brief.

And despite working in agencies where there were entire floors dedicated to Creative folk – art directors, copywriters, graphic designers – I also learnt that every single one of us is creative. You don’t need to be in the Arts to be creative.

Whether you’re an accountant, a builder, or you run an eCommerce store, you just need to find the time, regularly, to think differently about all aspects of your business. How you market it. How you employ. How you entertain. How you manage the finances.

Make this part of how you do business, and you’ll be in the successful minority of business owners who’ve cracked the creative code to standing out from the crowd, and creating a business people love to deal with.

Entrepreneur Howin Chui is in this club. He’s the quirky restaurateur behind Ni Hao Bar, Kowloon Cafe and Stir Fry King … very hip, very sought after Sydney-based eateries.

As Howin says, ““The food world isn’t just about the food quality; you need to create a feeling, a sensory experience .. you need to think differently. It’s about your customers wanting to be a part of an experience they can talk about to friends and share online.”

Now, Howin’s slightly nervous at the start of our chat, but trust me when I say persevere, as he shares some absolute gold about his respect for creativity in business, and most importantly, how he does it.

And just when you think he’s nothing more to share, near the end he shares his next business venture, which is absolutely genius!

Are you keen to discover how to use chatbots in your business? Artificial intelligence has finally infiltrated its way into small business marketing in the form of chatbots; that annoying software that has you thinking you’re chatting with a human … but you’re not! Fortunately, chatbots have come a long way in the past 12-months, and today they can be used in a myriad of ways from increasing sales, to effectively servicing your customer base and at the end of the day, growing your business. It’s a futuristic episode 618 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. Special Chatbot offer to all listenersGrab Amber’s exclusive offer to all Small Business Big Marketing listeners

A little more about chatbot expert Amberlea Henriques …Righto, it’s time you and I got our heads around the whole Chatbot thing.

You know those annoying interactions you have on websites and social media, where you think you’re chatting with a human, but in fact you’re conversing with a bit of AI software, that in my experience generally ends in tears.

Usually, the last thing I type in to a chatbot (normally in capital letters) is “Get me a fucking human to speak to!!!”

So as you can see, I’m going into this interview with a healthy amount of skepticism.

Fortunately though, we’re joined by one of Australia’s leading Chatbot experts, Amber Henriques, who’s also the founder of Perth-based marketing agency, AdSocial.

Amber is a trailblazer when it comes to futuristic marketing technologies across the Meta suite (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp), with a focus on interactive marktech, namely Chatbots and artificial intelligence.

We’re also joined by two of her clients who share how they’ve successfully deployed chatbots inside their businesses.

Like last week’s episode, this is another one that’s more a workshop than an interview as we get into the nitty gritty of how chatbots work, how they can be used to cut costs, streamline customer service, qualify leads, build lists and so much more.

And be sure to hang around until the end as Amber makes a very generous offer that you’d be silly not to take up!

Righto Chatbots … Here we come!

Keen to use email marketing to grow your business? Cool. On your website, offer visitors something of high perceived value to them, but at a low cost to you. In exchange for their email address, they get it for free. It might be an eBook. A video full of helpful tips. A one-off discount coupon. Over time you build an email list of prospects, that you then communicate with on a regular basis. The result? More loyal customers. More sales. And the lifetime value of those customers increases exponentially. Sounds good, huh? It’s a retentive episode 616 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.A little more about retention marketing expert Adam Robinson …Adam Robinson is the founder of Retention.com, a company laser-focussed on solving the #1 problem marketers and eCommerce brands face today: growing, engaging, and re-activating their email database.

In just two and half years, and with zero funding, Adam has grown Retention from zero to $14M in annual recurring revenue. Trust me, he knows what he’s doing!

We cover plenty of marketing ground including:

  • Why you need an email database and how to build one
  • If you have built an email database, you’ll discover how to best engage with it
  • The role polarisation plays in attracting and retaining customers
  • Plus Adam shares some great case studies covering all of the above

Now, I intended to kick things off by asking Adam how he became a retention expert, but we were quickly side-tracked when he mentioned just how much he paid for his business’s domain name!

If there was a more mature, funnier, well-informed small business marketing lover than me, then it’s Jay Baer. The guy has an uncanny ability to turn even the most sceptical business owner into a marketing tragic. I’ve been stalking, I mean following Jay’s work for over ten years, and every book (he’s written six), every research study he’s commissioned, every new concept he comes up with to help us small business owners grow, never fails to disappoint. It’s an exciting episode 615 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.A little more about small business marketing expert Jay Baer …OK, so if I asked Jay Baer to introduce himself, here’s what he’d say:

“The world’s most inspirational customer experience, customer service, and marketing keynote speaker. New York Times best-selling author of six books. A 7th-generation entrepreneur. The founder of five, multi-million dollar companies. Certified tequila sommelier. And, lover of all things plaid!”

I agree with all of the above, plus here’s my own two bobs worth.

You see, Jay is a marketing hero of mine who I’ve been following for over ten years. He first appeared way back in episode 296 where he spoke about his then new book Hug Your Haters.

What I really like about Jay is that he has an engaging way of identifying and uncovering the fun side of marketing, that always produces results for those who action his teachings.

Jay’s second book Youtility is in my top 3 marketing books of all time.

In terms of achievements, it’s an impressive roll call. He’s:

  • One of less than 200 living members of the Professional Speakers Hall of Fame
  • An inductee into the Word of Mouth Marketing Hall of Fame
  • An advisor to more than 700 companies since 1994, including Caterpillar, Nike, The United Nations and 36 of the FORTUNE 500

I encourage you to get your journal out for this one, as we cover so much marketing gold it verges on embarrassing! Topics include:

  • The importance of speed in business
  • How to create an unforgettable customer experience
  • How to create effective marketing on a limited budget
  • Jay shares his #1 secret to getting a return from your social media
  • We touch on word-of-mouth marketing
  • And plenty more …

I started off by asking Jay Baer to share his favourite definition of marketing …

Online business demystified. Keen to recession-proof your business? Maybe you want to add an additional revenue stream or two. Why wouldn’t you?! Well, I’ve got just the fella to help you do that. Paul Waddy is one of retail-tech’s brightest minds, in fact, he’s just released Selling Online for Dummies, and he joins us to share how you can master eCommerce in your business. It’s an e-ceptional episode 614 (see what I did there?!) of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Selling Online for Dummies author Paul Waddy …Paul Waddy is an eCommerce expert and strategic advisor to some of Australia’s most successful online retailers including ShoPo, The Horse and Oz Hair and Beauty.

In 2021 Paul was named Number 2 in the Top 50 People in eCommerce, and in 2022 he received the Industry Recognition Award at the Online Retail Industry Awards.

He’s such an expert in the eCommerce space that he’s just released Selling Online For Dummies and Shopify For Dummies, designed to give business owners (just like you) the expertise to transform your eCommerce ideas into a profitable reality.

As an aside, I couldn’t help myself … I Googled what are the strangest titles for

For Dummies books, and the top 3 are:

  1. Anger Management for Dummies (Step 1 is don’t get angry when someone calls you a dummy!)
  2. Near Death Experiences for Dummies (Step 1 is go towards the light. Step 2 is … not that close!)
  3. And the third one is Procrastination for Dummies, although no one gets around to reading this one!

Enough stupidity. This is serious stuff!

So settle in as Paul Waddy covers:

  1. How a clever eComm play can recession-proof your business
  2. The various ways of integrating eComm in to an existing business
  3. What you’d need to do to clear $5,000 a month after three months of starting an eCommerce business
  4. How to get traffic to your online store
  5. And plenty more.

Paul starts by explaining what he loves about eCommerce …

What on earth can us business owners learn from Jono Coghill, a member of Powderfinger* … one of Australia’s biggest ever rock bands? The answer? Plenty! Tune in as we go deep into the business of music with rock ‘n roll royalty. It’s a very rock ‘n roll episode 612 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.A little more about Powderfinger’s Jono Coghill …Jono Coghill was the drummer for Powderfinger*, one of Australia’s biggest rock bands of the 90s and naughties.

Their achievements include 18 ARIA awards, the third highest behind Silverchair and John Farnham, including Best Group, Album of the Year and Highest Selling Album.

They’ve sold millions of albums, and accumulated well over 1.5 billion downloads on Spotify alone.

Their anthems These Days and My Happiness were ranked #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 in 1999 and 2000, and 21 other Powderfinger tracks have ranked on this list in other years.

They’ve toured with ColdPlay, Crowded House and Silverchair, and have had their music feature in Hollywood blockbusters including Mission Impossible and Two Hands.

Now, at this point I can hear you yelling down your speaker “Hey Timbo, what’s all this got to do with small business marketing?”

Ball chain. Three million feet of ball chain every week. That’s what today’s guest manufactures. You know what ball chain is, right? You will shortly! Plus his 84 year old family business has become the most trusted provider of masks in the US. How’s that for a pivot!? Two vastly different products connected by a business owner who cares deeply for all aspects of his business. It’s a loving episode 611 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Ball Chain’s Bill Taubner …Today’s guest owns and runs two businesses.

One manufactures and sells three million feet of ball chain each week, and was started in 1938 by his great, great, great grandfather. I can already hear you asking what the hell is ball chain. Sit tight, you’re about to find out!

The other is a hygiene mask business that was started in 2020 in direct response to the pandemic, and in just two years has become the most trusted mask provider in the US.

His name is Bill Taubner and whilst he doesn’t sell the sexiest products in the world, he is a business owner that cares deeply for his customers, his staff, his suppliers and his local community.

He’s also a business owner that’s crystal clear on his values and ensures they’re evident in all his, and his 100+ staffs’ business dealings.

And that’s where today’s big learning is for us all.

As you’ll hear Bill say on more than one occasion, great businesses should be a reflection of who you are and what you stand for.

Now Bill can get on a bit of a roll, making it challenging for this timid little podcaster to get a word in … but do persevere as he shares some business and marketing gold once he builds up a head of steam.

I started off asking Bill how it feels to be at the helm of a fourth generation business …

With so many media outlets hawking bad economic news to improve their ratings, you’d be excused if you thought the entire world’s economy was on the verge of collapse. So I thought it was time to get a well-balanced, well-researched view. To that end, I knocked on the door of Christopher Joye, one of Australia’s most respected economists and fund managers. It’s a slightly scary episode 610 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Coolabah Capital’s Christopher Joye …Last week I had the pleasure of hearing today’s guest speak about the state of the Australian economy and what the coming 12 months looks like from a business and investment perspective.

His name is Christopher Joye, and he’s one of Australia’s leading economists.

  • He’s the founder of Coolabah Capital, a funds management business
    with $7B under management
  • Prior to starting Coolabah in 2011 he worked for Goldman Sachs in London, and for the Reserve bank of Australia.
  • In 2008, the Australian Government invested $15 billion behind a policy proposal he personally developed
  • He was invited by the Rockefeller and MacArthur Foundations to advise the Obama Administration on the US housing crisis
  • And he writes a weekly column for the Australian Financial Review

Now, in the spirit of total honesty, the economy is a topic that I’m no expert on. I scraped through year 12 Economics, and was glad to see the end of it.

So this was a hard interview to prep for, and there were times when I simply didn’t know what I should ask next.

I’ll now take my dunce hat off and say with hand on heart, that despite my ignorance, Chris comes through with the goods. He has an uncanny way of (most of the time) making the complicated beautifully simple.

The first part of the chat is all about his current business, then we get into the heavy stuff. So, put your big pants on as Chris gives us his deeply researched insights into what we can expect economically in 2023 and beyond, and what we can do as business owners to prepare for it and ensure as smooth a ride as possible.

And I know it goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway. Chris’s advice is of a general nature, not specific to your business. So please do your own research before acting on anything he suggests.

Do you ever look at some business owners and wonder how they do it all? How they take on so much, yet seem to hit home run after home run? How do they find the necessary time and energy to build empire after empire? Today’s guest is one of those unique entrepreneurs (some would call him a unicorn), and he’s kindly agreed to share his secrets of success with us today. It’s a mind-expanding episode 609 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about Doctors On Demand founder John Neilson …Righto, let’s meet today’s business superstar, or as he likes to refer to himself … an old fossil!

John Neilson is a qualified pharmacist with 49 years industry experience.

Over that time he’s opened 26 pharmacies, ran a pharmacy broking business as well as a medical centre.

For a time he owned and operated Koala Beach, a business selling sunglasses, hats, sunscreens, cosmetics and fragrances to pharmacies across Australia. The company had 14 sales representatives and at one stage was the largest hat importer in the country.

John’s also been actively involved in several major property developments in Queensland.

If all that’s not enough, he’s the co-founder of Doctors On Demand … a 24/7 Telehealth Service providing online doctors appointments, medical certificates and prescriptions.

Oh, and he’s also one of my ocean swimming buddies.

That’s a seriously impressive CV!

I started by asking John what drives him.
