This month of February, Storytellers of Color KGNU’s Rossana Longo Better interviews local lawyer and author Cesar Cuactemoc Garcia Hernandez, who has appeared in the New York Times, NPR, The Guardian, and many others, to talk about his recent book Welcome the Wretched his recent book which is well-timed for a year when our national immigration policies will be debated in the upcoming presidential election and beyond.

To García Hernández, the solution is clear: allow migrants to cross the border, decouple and defang the immigration and criminal legal systems, and let America live up to its promise as a safe and welcoming haven for all, not only for some.The book reveals how Silicon Valley today makes millions of dollars by harvesting and selling data that helps movement agencies find migrants who may have committed even. the most negligible crimes: Humanizes reams of research data to show that fear of criminal aliens is overblown in the US – where most immigrant communities are more peaceful and crime-free than non-immigrant communities and are driven by racism and bias.

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, our January Storytellers of Color features Diamond Hardiman, Reparative Journalism Manager with Free Press.
Hardiman speaks with KGNU’s Rossana Longo-Better on the newly created Reparative Journalism Project, a video series which is the brainchild of Media 2070 and News Voices.
The first video of the series, called A Journey Toward Reparative Journalism, discusses the legacy of harm in journalism and the subjugation of Black and Indigenous folks as a central root of journalism. The framework of reparations offers a co-created process of repair that journalism institutions must undertake — and that Black communities can learn from to begin their own healing.

Award-winning audio journalist Chloe Brooks-Kistler, who graduated from Colorado College, shares her trajectory as a young black podcast producer. Chloe has been producing stories since she was 16, and despite getting many recognitions, she shares with KGNU’s Rossana Longo-Better her struggles with getting a formal job in the journalism industry.

Gatherings of various working groups inspire the show, including the News Voices Initiative started by Diamond Hardiman and Journos of Color Network led by Tina Griego, reporter, editor, and coach from Colorado News Collaborative.
