Andrew Carnegie, once a destitute Scottish immigrant, rose to become the richest person in the world.

His breakthrough into the world of capitalism came about as the result of an investment opportunity supplied to him by his at the time boss and mentor, Thomas Scott of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Scott allowed Carnegie to invest into a private business which the railroad contracted out to, and after ponying up $500 by mortgaging the house he and his mother owned, Carnegie started to receive a dividend of $10 a month.

This may not seem like a lot in today’s figures, but it was a tremendous sum back then to the poor Scott who took home a measly $40 a month in full time pay.

The first dividend payment young Andrew received transformed his life completely. He immediately understood the power of capital, and got a taste of what we in modernity like to call passive income.

The rest is history.

But what are some takeaways for us from this story?

Do you know the difference between amateurs and professionals?

Amateurs lose games, and it's a contest to see who can lose fewer points than the other.

Professionals win games, and the match goes to who can win more points.

Life is the absolute same way, although it is harder for us to detect this since we're always playing the game in real time.

Charlie Munger said, in talking about how he and fellow billionaire Warren Buffett became the most prolific investors of all time…

"It is remarkable how much long-term advantage people like us have gotten by trying to be consistently not stupid, instead of trying to be very intelligent."

In this statement from the near 100 year old wrinkly genius, we can learn a lot if we're open to it.

Essentially, we're all standing in our own way in some capacity, and usually in more than one.

I realize this can be a sensitive topic. It is hard to admit when we're messing up, especially to ourselves.

Yet, the short-term ego pain of embracing and fixing the suck will ultimately make us stronger, if we allow it to.

On the one hand, if you never ask for what you want, chances are you’re never going to get it. Other people are not mind readers, and everyone is mostly thinking about themselves, their problems, pains, hopes and responsibilities.

It’s just not practical or effective to bank on others sensing what you want / need.

Asking is critical.

On the other hand, asking too much, whether it be in frequency or size or both, will eventually lead to relationship decay.

What is a person to do?

Woke up this morning, and after a bit of piddling watched the Pelicans, my local New Orleans NBA team. They were so fun to watch because of how skilled they are, it was inspirational. It made me think a lot about mastery, the process, the practice, and more, so I decided to film this quick video for you. In it contains a strong recommendation to read Mastery by Robert Greene. It is fantastic.
