Japji Sahib answers all of the biggest questions anybody could possibly have about life and the creation. Questions like, 'What is the meaning of life? What is my purpose? What is my true essence?' Each pauri (stanza) takes you on a journey closer to your soul, step by step. Through taking on the wisdom of Japji Sahib, you can realise your true self. In each podcast, Bhai Baljit Singh explores one pauri at a time in a friendly discussion format, using very relatable and real life examples to learn from. Let's go on this journey together and go back home to our soul. Japji Sahib is the first Sikh prayer written in Guru Granth Sahib Ji (eternal Sikh scriptural Guru) written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. This Bani (prayer) is recited by Sikhs daily as part of their Nitnem (daily Sikh prayers).

Guru Nanak Dev Ji uses the analogy of making gold coins to explain the exact formula to get to Vaheguru. Just like a goldsmith needs a workshop to work in, our workshop to take steps towards self-realisation needs to be self-control of our senses. The analogy continues in this amazing final pauri of Japji Sahib.

"The chisel of humility carves you to immense incomparability."
In Saram Khand—the realm of humility described in Japji Sahib—our hardened ego is chiselled away. This process is often difficult, but it is through this inner sculpting that true spiritual beauty emerges. Humility is not weakness; it is a true strength—the shedding of the ego.
In this episode, Bhai Baljit Singh and Bibi Kirandeep Kaur delve into the divine wisdom of Japji Sahib. They reflect on the inspiring sakhi (true story) of Bhai Nand Lal Ji, a celebrated scholar and poet in the court of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The story recounts a powerful moment of humility: when Guru Ji, disguised in simple attire, approached Bhai Nand Lal Ji late at night requesting langar. Bhai Nand Lal Ji's response revealed the depth of their humility and love for the Guru.
Through this discussion, we are reminded that the path to divine union is not through pride, but through sincere humility.

The creation—through seasons, elements, and time—is designed for the practice of Dharam (righteous living). So when suffering shows up in our life, the question isn’t “Why is God punishing me?” — it’s “What am I being shown?”

Here, Guru Ji opens our eyes to the vastness of creation, pointing us towards the sheer wondrousness of the Divine. What it takes to do anything in life is so intricately and beautifully designed by the One. When we surrender in awe to that divine system, we begin to step out of our ego — and into the experience of Vaheguru. This episode explores the subtle, often confusing question: When should we speak, and when should we stay silent? It’s not as simple as it seems. And if you’re struggling with something in life — ask yourself: How badly do you want to change? From 49 minutes onwards, we go into powerful steps on what to do, taking support from the shabad Keeta Lorreeai Kam.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji reveals the profound truth that the entire creation has been perfectly designed by the One — nothing is lacking. The creation is watched and sustained by the Creator, and we have the opportunity to connect and experience that divine reality. In doing so, we come to realise that we are more than just our bodies — we are the primal soul, part of the eternal truth, already complete.

The knowing and experience that you're internally complete is what it means to live in contentment. Waiting to feel fulfilled from an external factor is one of the biggest mistakes we can make in life. Bhai Baljit Singh shares the beautiful sakhi of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who alongside Mata Ganga Ji, dressed down appearing to be regular villagers to selflessly serve the Kabul sangat who travelled hundreds of miles to have the darshan (vision) of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The powerful sevas that Guru Ji tells the Sikh to do has the ability to transform us if we do it with devotion. In this Pauri, contrasting to the yogi tradition, we learn about what the Sikh does to keep remember the One and the impermanence of life, and what it means to conquer the world.

Allow stories to be a powerful and impactful mode to teach use every day life lessons. In this instance, Guru Angad Dev Ji perfectly allows us to witness how they remained in the priceless essence of love instead of allowing the ego mind to take over in response to somebody else's frustration and anger.
In this pauri (stanza), Guru Nanak Dev Ji share their wisdom to such an extent that we lose ourself in the repetitive reciting of praising how priceless the One is. This repetition turns into true remembrance and through that we fall into that priceless love. Imagine Guru Nanak takes your hand and allows you to see how priceless that One is.

57:30 - Any blessing is your gift - Nanak Nadari Karmi Daat
The illusion of desire keeps us thinking that bliss is one step away. Guru Nanak Dev Ji reminds us that in the same way that rivers and streams travel towards the ocean, we too can go back into that ocean of bliss in this very moment internally, even whilst we're doing our day to day tasks. Even if you've got an abundance of wealth, if you are not satisfied, you can bring a lot of distress to the world because of your hunger. You could be as small as an ant - you may not know a lot or have a lot materialistically, but because you're complete from inside, in that you've found eternal bliss, you will be of service to your life and bring peace into the world.

The mind constantly keeps falling into the trap thinking it needs to know the absolute limit and end to everything and figure everything out. That's okay but it can think that once it's figured it out how this works, how that works, it's going to feel complete and satisfied and at some points it's going to come to a stop. That's an illusion because you'll never reach that place discovering more about the creation. Instead you'll find yourself in a rut of chasing pleasure.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji says something very simple - sometimes hearing something so simple can make you think - is that it? Guru Ji says take a moment to just say, 'wow' to how great You are, and realise that in that moment of 'wow', you are complete.

Knowing about the creation or improving the external quality of our life won't take us into a state of joy. In the state of awe, surrender and gratitude will take us to our true home.

When we're repeating actions again and again, it's forming a part of our subconscious mind. Living unconsciously means to live out of those patterns, regardless of whether they are good or bad. Spiritual awakening is when we use the tools the Guru provides to live consciously. Living consciously is being coloured in love which cleanses your mind and allows you to use your mind righteously instead of it using you.

It's easy to get caught up in our own head and feel that everything is centred around us and our feelings. Guru Nanak Dev Ji brings the vastness and grand scale of this creation to our awareness.
Guru Ji wants us to live this life realising how the creator's name is signed on everything. We can give meaning to everything and anything and allow the creation to take us to a state of awe and feel a oneness with the creator. There's nothing that hasn't got Vaheguru's name to it.

It's not necessarily the same thing that works for everyone. Ultimately, we want to get to a place where we let go and surrender to be with Vaheguru but it can be different things take you to that place. The focus is not so much on the action itself. The whole purpose is that the grip of the ego is reducing and we are experiencing the qualities of God.
In this video, Bhai Baljit Singh discusses how certain people express their love for God in different ways. Some may express it by being more of a mother, father or friend to the world. As a receiver, when we open our heart to that, Vaheguru will always give us the love that we are seeking.

In one of the most famous lines in Japji Sahib ਧੌਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਾ ਪੂਤੁ ॥ (dhaual dharam deaa kaa poot), the translation you'd normally find available is 'The mythical bull is Dharma, the son of compassion'. Bhai Baljit Singh properly explains this confusing english translation, uncovering the true meaning of this line.

What do people class as freedom? Is it to be able to make certain choices in life that you weren't able to make before? The Guru talks about freeing us from the imprisonment of ego and unconscious desires. Liberation is freeing ourselves from our identities of needing to be validated and praised or giving the power away to be affected by someone else speaking low of us. Freedom is living in a complete state of consciousness and always remaining in love.

To walk on the path of devotion, we have to be willing to place our ego before the Guru. Whilst surrendering to the Guru, it doesn't matter what task you are told to carry out, but it's following the Guru with full faith that will start to break down that wall of ego. The Guru is taking us back to our true nature which is love and bliss. When we start living from that nature, whatever action we perform in this world will be filled with love and compassion.

Acceptance is not to resist the light within us. When we're in internal mental pain, it's because we're resisting that part of Vaheguru (God) within us. Living in that state of sweet acceptance will give us the awareness of our mind which is made up of memories, thoughts and experiences. When our only reality is our identities, we are controlled by our emotions. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is telling us that our liberation lies in listening and surrendering in each moment to Naam (connection to the divine).

Why is it that two different people could be doing the exact same outward action and reach a completely different spiritual state? Guru Nanak Dev Ji tells us that this path is all about devotion and standing at the door of Vaheguru (God) whilst being imbued. It's being in a state of longing, surrender and love which takes us to a state of devotion. The path is devotion. That is the way that you're going to get through those doors to Vaheguru and when somebody is on that path, you can never describe where they are internally.
Bhai Baljit Singh shares the true story of when Bhai Mardana Ji was hypnotised by Noor Shah to believe he was a ram to exemplify the difference between genuine devotion and obtaining power for ill intentions.

Vaheguru (God) is inside you. Go deep inside and listen to that intuition that lives within you. From this, the specific and relevant actions will come to you. If you use this inner voice which will always guide you in the right way, it will lead you to embracing and having divine virtues. It will guide you towards crossing this world ocean with ease. Within this listening, the divine qualities will be present. If the qualities aren't present, we're not listening. As you connect to that vibration, you will automatically be pulled towards those qualities. If you're in sync with your intuition, that inner listening will only provide you with a place of working from love and compassion, because that vibration is that itself.

As difficult as it may be to speak the truth in today's world, it is even more difficult to live the truth. Truthful living in its full package is practised without pride (looking down upon others). Through listening deeply, we will know exactly what to say and do to access truthful living. The journey of deep listening allows us to know our own self and know the patterns of how our mind works. Once we intuitively learn to read ourself and our own mind, we can get a much deeper understanding of others too.

What does it actually mean to be foul-mouthed according to Guru Nanak Dev Ji? The moment we curse at God for getting things wrong is the definition of being foul-mouthed. Praising Vaheguru (God) is when we're in a state of acceptance and understanding that the things that happen around us are a play of divine will, in the same way Guru Gobind Singh Ji did, after seeing his sons and Singhs being martyred before his eyes, singing in a state of acceptance to Vaheguru, calling Vaheguru their beloved friend.

Just because we're hearing somebody talk, it doesn't necessarily mean we are actually listening to them. We can often be eager to give our pre-calculated response, instead of listening with compassion and patience. The true essence of listening is a test of our humility. Whilst listening with humility we'll not only be able to just listen to someones words, but go even deeper and tap into their feelings and emotions.
Listening in this way will guide us towards listening to the divine that is in constant communication with us. Through this, we can truly blossom.

In today's age, it's easy to fall into the trap of chasing fame, likes and followers in the hope it brings us some form of satisfaction and happiness. It doesn't matter how known we become, if we haven't come into the glance of the One, all of it is a waste.
Becoming self aware of our feelings when we come to know that we have been slandered will help us to know if we are resisting God, or if we are allowing ourself to be in the glance of God and the nature of love and compassion. Being in the company of those that are virtuous can help us to experience those very virtues within ourself. Bhai Baljit Singh discusses how to practically deal with experiencing hurt and slandering whilst maintaining Godly qualities.

Sometimes we spend a lot of time and effort in doing certain practises that are more pleasing to us than to the One. Guru Nanak Dev Ji asks, 'what is it that we receive outside of grace?' The Guru gives us the understanding that everything comes from the One. Through the remembrance of the One (Simran), we can become aware of grace and through that, receive divine qualities.

We often hear that God is love but through which lens are we trying to understand God's love? Gurbani itself defines God's love for us which is that God's vision is equal upon all. To experience the love of God, Guru Nanak tells us to deeply contemplate the greatness of the One. This will open us to Vaheguru's grace allowing us to experience God's love.

When we realise that we are bound by the One's divine will and cannot escape that, we start to step away from the multiple layers of ego that we are stuck in. Having this realisation is our doorway to liberation.
Whilst being identified with the ego and being separated from the truth, we continue to remain bound to our karmic load (past experiences). The only way to break this cycle is to receive Vaheguru Ji's (God's) grace. To receive this grace, we have to play to the game that the Creator has created.

The Mool Mantar is the foundation of Sikhi (Sikhism). Mool, literally means root; the Mool Mantar describes the root of all existence and the qualities of that One that created everything. It describes what you are at your core (your soul) and what you have the potential to experience. Through experiencing these qualities, you can achieve the state of complete bliss.
In this video, Bhai Baljit Singh summarises the meanings of the Mool Mantar. Each word has its own individual video explanation too, so if you want to delve even deeper you can check those videos out in this playlist: https://bit.ly/3jMoPCi
