Steve Pruett joins the crew to discuss his message, Two Paths.
So, the word you are looking for is spelled igta’.
Pronounced eegTAH’ (no actual “H” sound, but a hard stop after the short “A”)
TMI: The different words for a negative are:
- Da’gwa - a general “no”
- Da’a - “None”, or “no more”
- Belag - “No, it’s different than you said” ( the “e” is not our “ee” sound…it’s an unrounded “u”
- Awatay - “No Way”
- Igta’ - “No, and it’s even repulsive to think about it” (Like if I would ask you to eat something disgusting)
The diacritic at the end of the word (the apostrophe) is actually an important consonant called a glottal stop.
It’s made at the top of the vocal chords, and cuts off the vowel instead of letting it trail off.
Some languages like English use them, but they aren’t phonemic, i.e. they don’t change the meaning of the word, so we don’t really notice them. For example, in the middle of the word “Uh-Oh”.
The British use them for words like City and Bottle and Mittens: (Ci’ee, bo’le, mi’ens)
The Batak people.use them, and they have a distinct meaning. They might use them in front of a word, in the middle or at the end. It’s not easy for English speakers to do.
