Dyslexia in Adults: Recent Episodes

Natalie Brooks

Welcome to the Dyslexia in Adults podcast, a weekly podcast discussing the reality of dyslexia, but only in adults.

I'm Natalie, the Founder of Dyslexia in Adults, and I am incredibly passionate about talking specifically about adult dyslexia.

It frustrates me so much when people talk about child dyslexia is a courtesy mention of adult dyslexia.

When you think about it, there are more adults with dyslexia. There is also a wave of adults being diagnosed with dyslexia later in life, with little or no information about how to navigate the challenges that are specific to adults with dyslexia.

It also doesn’t help those people who want to help adults with dyslexia; line managers, work colleagues, friends, family, if the only information available is that to support children as opposed to what it means to have and support dyslexia in adulthood.

I have rolled up my sleeves, and I am determined to create a space where we only talk about adult dyslexia. It's not part of the conversation, it is the conversation.

Come and join the conversation and help us grow the community, all I ask is that, if you find the content valuable, please rate, review and share this podcast to help others to find it.

In this second mini-series episode, I unpack part two of the successful adult framework: strategies. Why hard work alone stops working, the pattern behind burnout, and the simple shift that makes everything feel lighter.

In this episode:

  • Why hard work becomes the default (and only) strategy for so many dyslexic adults
  • The two patterns behind poor energy management, and why "just push through and crash later" stops working in midlife
  • The client who arrived with a bag full of strategies and still couldn't leave the office before 8pm
  • My 80:20 rule: the practical way to think about reasonable adjustments in real life, not in theory
  • Real-life breakdowns of the 80:20 rule in action, from the supermarket to writing a report at work
  • Why doing 200% isn't proof you're capable, it's actually what's making you inefficient

One line to take with you: You don't need to do more. You need to do things differently. Get the book: Dyslexia Unlocked — paperback and audiobook.

My book Dyslexia Unlocked (Bloomsbury Publishing) is out now. In this first mini-series episode, I unpack part one of the successful adult framework: confidence. Why dyslexic adults stay stuck, the stories that shape us, and the shift that changes everything.

In this episode:

  • Why low confidence in dyslexic adults usually starts at school
  • The teacher comment that stayed with me for years
  • How school-era beliefs quietly follow us into work and shrink our careers
  • The client who turned down a CEO role over company-wide emails
  • Why "superpower vs. something I hate" is a false choice — and the third way
  • The reframe: those "easy" tasks aren't actually easy, not for you or the 700 million dyslexic people worldwide

One line to take with you: Confidence isn't about fixing yourself. It's about changing how you see yourself.

Episode 82 - How to tell your Boss about Challenges with Working Memory

In this penultimate episode in the series of 'Working Memory' at work, we go through how communicate with your boss about the challenges of working memory.

Working memory affects everyone and people with dyslexia have a slightly reduce working memory capacity.

What does this mean?

But simply, working memory is that part of your brain which is supposed to hold multiple parts of information temporarily and re-call it when needed. An example of this in the work place might be, in a meeting with your team, or when in a training course.

We call it our brain's post-it note.

What does a reduced capacity look like in working memory?

A neurotypical brain would receive multiple parts of information, process it, organise is of where to store the information (long term memory, short term memory) and then re-call it when needed. A dyslexic brain would receive parts of information, miss other parts of information as you're still trying to process the last bits, store it in short term memory, start to process new information, and forget the last price which has been stored temporarily.

Sound like you?

Well, in this episode, we give you some tips to help navigate this challenge, and most critically advice and suggestions on how to communicate these challenges to your boss in a way which packages it in productive and positive manner.

We even provide you with a full scrip of what to say below...

Asking for Help Via Email 1:

Hello XX

I wanted to quickly discuss with you some options for approaching the team meeting that will help me complete my work faster and create more efficiency.

At the moment, our meetings are more like brainstorming sessions, where we often jump from topic to topic. How I process information means this unstructured approach can be overwhelming and does not allow me to contribute as fully as the team deserves.

Next week, would you mind if I created an agenda (with your approval) and we went topic by topic? This approach would allow the whole team to better prepare for our meetings, make note-taking easier, and create clearer, better follow-up after the meeting.

While our team meetings are not a big problem, I think this small shift might benefit the team and ensure we get the most out of our meetings.

Let me know what you think, and I’ll send a draft agenda.

One of the ways in which Dyslexia in Adults helps people navigate the challenges and specifically in the work place, is though my 1:1 coaching.

With coaching its not easy for some people to understand what it is and how it can help. Which is why in this episode I am speaking with one of my past client who has kindly agreed to share their story and experience of 1:1 coaching, and how the coaching has helped to shape her life and career because of dyslexia!

Laura find out later in life that she had dyslexia and was ready through school education and well in to work. After her diagnosis, it was clear that some of the challenges with dyslexia were holding her back from career progression.

When Laura discovered Dyslexia in Adults she joined the Membership 'Hive' and instantly saw the kind of benefits she could gain from more !:! dedicated specific support in her challenges and so set-up a call with Natalie to explore some more.

Laura's change from starting her coaching session with very little understanding of her dyslexia and very low confidence, to clearer picture of what dyslexia is, and how she can build confidence in learning new strategies of navigating the challenges and thrive with dyslexia.

Episode 70 - Dyslexia Success Story with CMO of Samsung Europe, Benjamin Braun.

This episode is a little different. In this episode I am joined by the brilliant Benjamin Braun, the CMO of Samsung Europe!

My aim with these ocasional guest interviews is to share and demonstarte real world examples of people who are scuessful BECAUSE of their dyslexia, not despite it.

This also proves that of the things we talk about on this podcast really do work in the real world, and they will work for everyone. It helps to contextualise the concepts we talk about on this podcast into real world examples.

Benjamin joined Samsung as their Chief Marketing Officer for Europe. Prior to Samsung, Benjamin led Audi’s marketing in the United Kingdom. His campaigns were used worldwide and recognised with a Cannes Lions Gold Award and an IPA Grand Prix for marketing efficiency. Before joining Audi, Benjamin was part of the comparethemarket.com’s executive team and worked across the UK, France and Holland. At British Gas he launched a nifty little app that lets you control your home from your phone. And before that he worked for American Express in New York.

Benjamin’s personal achievements include his photography exhibition at the Tate Gallery in London and receiving the Royal Swedish Glass design award. Benjamin also volunteers as a Special Police Constable in London where he responds to emergencies.

Episode 69 - What Navigating Dyslexia Looks Like

Ever been told "You just need to do things differently" or "do what works for you!"

Ever noticed that these phrases never come with any actual advice or suggestions of what this looks like!?

Well, at Dyslexia in Adults we DO do things differently. We actually share stories and advice of what navigating dyslexia's challenegs really looks like so that you can see that you're not alone, and contextualise practical tips so that you too can start to find what works for you by seeing what works for other people with Dyslexia.

In this episode I share with you a real life example from my own experience where I put in to practice 'doing things differently' in a way which works with my brain instead of against it.

It's important to me to open and vulnerable with you on this podcast so that, while others will talk about Dyslexia being a 'super power' we talk about the reality of dyslexia.

Episode 68 - Dyslexia and Reading Long E-mails

That feeling you get when you get one heck of a loooong e-mail!

This is a question that came up in our membership The Hive and ther person seeking help was desperate for that hack that would solve their problem.

Often, with dyslexia, the reading is not the problem, its the comprehension.

Comprehension is the understanding of teh whole text, not just the words. This usually comes about when you notice that you have re-read the same text multple times, and when you get to the end and relaise that you took none of that in.

Ofcourse there are loads of things which we could recomend. Theres a ton of assivtive technology and coloured filters you could use which might help. But I am sorry to say that, when we want real sucess with managing our dyslexia, the reality is that there is no one hack that will solve everything for you. And, though we could recommend loads of really helpful things, it is usually down to the individual needs as some things just won't work for you and the way your brain works.

In this episode I share with you some suggestions which we believe could help with thsi specific dyslexia challenge and what we think you should do to get ever lasting sucess.

Second step is to identify what's going on when things do go well and you find it a breeze navigating the same challenge. WHen we've identidied these little triggers, we can developp strategies to work around them to build something taht will work around how your brain naturally thinks.

Episode 63 - Understanding what is Dyslexia Rewind

This week's episode is a rewind episode from Episode 4 when we discuss 'What is Dyslexia'.

If we better understand dyslexia better we can work out better systems to support us.

The more we understand dyslexia, it does two things:

  • We understand better systems to support us, and
  • We can better accept the challenges of dyslexia.

Talking to other people with dyslexia and understanding the reality of dyslexia, with the broader range of challenges beyond under spelling and reading, helps to feel less isolated and alone.

When you know that you're not the only one experiencing these broad range of challenges, they seem more manageable.

Key topics:

  • Why we first need to understand dyslexia,
  • How Broad the Challenges and Strengths are with Dyslexia,
  • Discussing the reality helps us to feel less alone, and
  • How you can navigate all of the frutrating emotions.

Episode 62 - Dyslexia and How to Navigate Tiredness

Whenever I talk about dyslexia and tiredness, analytics go crazy!

And, it got me thinking. Why is this topic so popular?

I think the answer is that it's one of the least covered topics when we talk about dyslexic challenges.

There's something about this topic that for people with dyslexia, it makes them say "Yes! That's totally me!" "I never associated that with my dyslexia!". It makes people with like you're not alone in this challenge.

So, I thought it was time we talked about how best to navigate tiredness with dyslexia.

In this episode, I share two recent, real-life conversations I've had with two separate 1:1 clients of mine. In these conversations, the core of the issues was tiredness, and feeling judged and guilt for trying to follow what we think people expect of us, rather than following what works best for how our brains work.

I too use to get tried every afternoon when I worked in the corporate world. Now working for myself, in the ways which work best for me and my brain, I am more productive than I have ever been.

In this episode I will share how you can become more productive by working in the way which best works for you!

  • What you can do to navigate this challenge.

Epsiode 61 - Dyslexia and Procrastinating

It doesn't matter how important the task is. If it's not fum and interesting, or I think it's going to be a challenge for my dyslexia, it will get left to the last minute to complete the task.

It often comes with so much guilt and shame that you've left the task so late that you dare not share this with anyone!

This is so common for neurodiverse people particularly with Dyslexia and/or ADHD!

Once we understand how and why if affects our performance, we can put strategies in place to support us in these areas.

In this episode I share a story about when this has happened to me recently, like so many people with dyslexia. And how I used my strategies which I have in place to support me through the challenge.

Hopefully this gives you some tips on what you can do next time you feel like you're procrastinating over a really important, yet boring task!

Episode 56 - How to Support your Dyslexic Partner

Flexible and Kind.

These are the essential qualities that I believe everyone should have in their partner, but esspecially for partners of dyslexic people.

In this episode I share a conversation I had wiuth friends over dinner about what are the best qualities and characteristics of a partner for a dyslexic person that they can understand better what support their dyslexic partner needs.

Understanding how dyslexic brains work, helps the partners of dyslexic people understand the importance of 'going with the flow' and being flexible.

Typically, people with dyslexia have some traits which can be frustrating at times, like processing information differently or slower, or misreading directions or lists. BUT... people with dyslexia also typically have traits which are very empathetic and creative, so you could be in for a lot of fun.

If you want to be supportive to your dyslexic partner, be flexible and kind.

In this episode I also share some of teh behined the sceans of Dyslexia in Adults like how the businees model works.

Key topics:

  • How to support your dyslexic partner,
  • Leaning to be flexible and 'go withe the flow'
  • Be kind and take the lead in areas your dyslexic partner are not confident in (like remebering peoples names, like writing a shopping list rather trusting their memory), and
  • Understanding how their brain works.

Episode 55 - Understanding Dyslexic Strengths to Grow Confidence

This is the last episode in the 'Growing Confidence ' series. All throughout January I have been talking about confidence as I feel without it you won't be able to find sustainable success because of dyslexia as opposed to despite of it.

When we talk about managing the challenges with dyslexia and hacks to navigate the challenges, we're not really addressing the root cause of the issues block success and feeling accepting of your dyslexia.

When we focus on strengths and we build confidence, then we can start to build real success.

What is great is that, you're not alone in this. Not only do we have a whole community called "The Hive" but, the reason I started Dyslexia in Adults is because I was looking for answers myself, beyond navigating hacks and work arounds for challenges like spell and time management. So I know what it feels like.

In this last episode of this series I dig deep into strengths and use real life examples from the Hive, 1:1's, and myself.

If you want to join our live talks on confidence with dyslexia, join the Hive and gain free access to the live talks

Key topics:

  • What confidence looks like,
  • Why buidling confidence is key to unlocking everything else, and
  • How to build confidence.

Episode 54 - How to Build Confidence with Dyslexia

I honestly believe that, no matter what strategies or 'hacks' you put in place to navigate the challenges of dyslexia, without confidence you'll never fully embrace your dyslexia and truly understand your strengths .

See, when your focus is on navigating or avoiding the challenges, you fail to see the strengths which is iconically the first step to building confidence with dyslexia and believing in yourself.

I too, as a fellow dyslexic adult, do not manage to avoid or navigate all my dyslexic challenges all the time with the best of strategies in place. In this episode I will tell you a story about a recent dyslexia fail which years ago would have sent me into a spiral of self loathing and self judgement. But today, with a build of self-confidence, I can notice the challenge and the cause, take a beat, and make a decision to move forward more confident and resilient than I was before.

And it's not just me. In this episode I use a real world examples from some of my 1:1 coaching sessions I have with other dyslexic adults!

I really believe in this and why I started Dyslexia in Adults is to help others find their confidence in dyslexia, and to build a community of people so that we know we're not going through this alone!

Key topics:

  • What confidence looks like,
  • Why buidling confidence is key to unlocking everything else, and
  • How to build confidence.

Episode 48 - Working Memory and Dyslexia

"I knew what she asked me, but my brain was still processing so I made the answer up!"

I think everyone with dyslexia knows how this feels. When you're asked a question, sometimes even a very simple strightforward question, and it takes time for your brain to porcess what was asked and what your response should be.

In this epiosde, I tell you a story of when this happened to me very recently and what I did to overcome some of the negative feelings associated with this dyslexic challenge.

The key to navigating challenges with working memory is to first build confidence and not to judge yourself.

Key topics:

  • Understanding what working memory is,
  • Understanding how dyslexia affects working memory,
  • What happened when this happened to me recently, and
  • What you can do when this happens to you!

Episode 46 - Thinking Differently About Dyslexic Strengths

This week's epsiode is a Rewind of one of our popular episodes, episode No.2 'Dyslexic Strengths'1

don't like to refer to dyslexia as a "Superpower".

I feel that terming dyslexia as a "Superpower" alienates people, I think it sets the bar too high, and I don't believe it truly highlights the reality of dyslexia in adults.

I like to look at dyslexia strengths alongside the challenges and weaknesses. This is important as I believe it helps to recognise that the challenges and our strengths go hand-in-hand.

Key topics:

  • Talking about Dyslexic Strengths,

  • Not looking at Dyslexia as a "Superpower",

  • How we can discuss dyslexic strengths in a better way, and

  • How you can find your dyslexic strengths.

Episode 42 - Coping With Negativity

Do you feel your dyslexia is holding you back?

It is understood that, by the age of 10, a person with ADHD will receive over 20,000 negative comments relating to their ADHD.

Whilst this statistic is specific to ADHD, it is expected that this is also the case for people with all neurodiversites especially dyslexia. And if that is the number by age 10, imagine what the number is when you reach adulthood!

The fact is that, whist attitudes may be getting better with wider understanding, the negativity around the challenges faced with people with any type of neurodiversity is still staggering and has profound affects on those people for their whole lives.

In this episode, I talk about how I work with my 1 to 1 clients to establish some of this root negativities of their dyslexia which is holding them back and getting the way of them succeeding.

Episode 38 - Public Speaking with Dyslexia

What's your thoughts on Public Speaking?

Hate it!

Rather not!

Worried I will loose track of what I am saying or forget a word!

If I have too!

Yes! Great! I love public speaking!

Whatever your take on public speaking is, most people with dyslexia should be great at it, with practice, strategies for the odd mistake or challenge, and most importantly CONFIDENCE.

Yes, I am back on the Confidence picket line!

There are specific dyslexic strengths which make great public speaking. The top dyslexic strength is narrative reasoning. The ability to explain complect theories or connects is simple and easy to understand way through the power of story telling.

You may not realise it but even those dull mundane work presentations can be given new life and set you apart from average speakers through this specific dyslexic strength!

However, let's not forget that nothing with dyslexia comes without challenges.

In this episode I go through how my dyslexic strengths, with a lot of practice, has made me the public speaker I am today and how I enjoy public speaking! And I still have all the same challenges as other dyslexics. I explain how you can navigate some of these challenges in your public speaking to build your confidence. And when you have confidence, there is no stopping you!

Key topics:

  • Why dyslexic people should be great public speakers
  • How I have built confidence in my speaking, and

Episode 37 - Dyslexia and Resiliance

The point I am trying to make with effectively managing dyslexia is NOT "fixing it" so that you never struggle again.

NO!

It's about understanding the challenges, recognising your strengths, and most importantly...

...how quickly you can 'bounce back' from a set back or something embarrassing because of your dyslexic challenges.

This is a mindset shift to build resilience and nota one trick fix.

In this episode, I go through with you some of the more common examples of what occurs in my 1:1 coaching sessions with dyslexia after practicing the strategies. It is expected to have a set back. The important thing is, how quickly can you recover and turn the situation into an opportunity.

As I always say... "Dyslexia is a marathon, not a sprint!"

Key topics:

  • Why quick one tick fixes are not sustainable,

  • Why set backs are expected in the name of progress, and

  • How recognising that set backs are part of the process and the mind set shift is what creates lasting change!

Keywords: dyslexia, dyslexic, mindset, self-limiting beliefs, personal growth, reframing, success, can-do attitude, dyslexia coaching, overcoming challenges, Mindset, working hard.

Episode 36 - How to Reduce Dyslexic Mistakes

Are you done with the sneaky dyslexic mistakes that creep into reports, presentations, emails, and the like?

Well... In this week's episode, I share with you the most effective way to reduce these mistakes, and it's not what you might think.

I have spoken to thousands of people with dyslexia, many of which through 1:1 coaching, and the most common yet under valued ways to reduce dyslexic mistakes that beats all other "hacks" which is to...

...SLOW DOWN.

I know, not exactly what you might expect, but trust me, it really works when done in the right way.

In this episode I break down for you, using real world examples, why slowing down is so effective and how to use this tool effectively to work with you and not against you.

Trust me, when you start to try this in the way explained in this episode, you will wish you had tried this sooner.

Episode 35 - Dyslexic People Work Hard

Dyslexic people work hard and can go to extreme lengths to prepare (and sometimes over prepare) just to feel that we're keeping up with others.

This hard working ethic is a great strength of dyslexia and sometimes goes massively unnoticed by others. However, I have heard of, and experienced myself, so many times where our hard working ethic and over preparedness can go too far to our peril.

Going to extreme lengths, working hard to make sure we're 'keeping up' can mean we people the fountain of knowledge for topics where everyone comes to you for help. However this can also lead to burn out and exhaustion, (I talk a lot about this in Episode 3, Tiredness if you wanted to go back and listen to that episode).

In this episode I share some stories of my own experience and from others dyslexics I have met through Dyslexia in Adults of how hard working can be a strength and a challenge.

I also share some helpful advice I share with my 1:1 clients for navigating the challenges the hard working presents.

The biggest take away I want to take from this episode is to learn that; its okay not to take on 150% of the work. It also okay to take on 80% and lean on others (at work, at home) to make up the 20%. It's so important to understand and recognise when working hard is serving us, and when it is not.

Key topics:

  • Why working hard is a great quality to posses and a strength,

  • How to recognise if you're going too far just to keep up, and

  • How to share the load so that you are doing 80% and others around you pull their for the other 20%!

Episode 34 - Dyslexia, Change your Mindset

Some times all we want is a new system, hack, or tip that will change how we cope with the challenges of dyslexia. I say, whilst they are all good things, FIRST, we need to change our mindset about how we view our dyslexia challenges.

In this episode I share with you why focusing on our midset around dyslexia first is most imporant when we consider setting up systems and 'hacks' that create those ever lasting changes in how we tackle the challenges with dyslexia.

Without the right midset, all the systems and hacks in the world will only last so long. for sustained and impactful change that really works, you have to address the mindset.

This topic is something that I battelled with when I started 'Dyslexia in Adults' and part of teh reason why I started it. Now I can share some advice and experience based on my lived experience but also from some of the converstaions I have with my 1:1 clients in coaching sessions.

Key topics:

  • Why systems and 'hacks' are good but only take you so far,

  • Why setting the right mindset is most impotrant first step for creatining everlasting change, and

  • Examples of hopw you can change your mindset!

Episode 33 - Dyslexia Seen Differently

What I always hear from people, when we talk about systems to work with your brain, is...

..."But I don't want to be seen differently." or "But I just want to be 'Normal'!"

Well...Sorry...The reality is that...that will never happen. Sorry.

Nor do you want to be "Normal".

Putting systems in place help you to lean into what makes you different and helps you to succeed in your strongest areas. And if that works for you, you cares what other people think!

I work with Dyslexic people everyday so I know what creating the right systems and environment can do to help you to succeed. First step is to change your mindset to see that what makes you different is also what makes you YOU!

Key topics:

  • Why you don't want to be seen differently,

  • Why creating the right systems that works with your brain helps you be YOU, and

  • Who cares what that looks like as long as it serves you!

Episode 32 - Dyslexia and Feeling Tired : Rewind

This week's episode is a rewind back to episode 3 where I talk in detail about dyslexia and feeling tired. This topic is not talked alot about but is so important. Most people don't even consider this a dyslexic challenge.

Epsiode 3 has been our most popular episode and it is so early on in this series of podcasts that I thought it would be worth sharing again as so many people would have missed it when it was first published. The topics are so important and so under appreciated that I feel it was a great opportunity to reshare this episode.

If this episode and topic hits home with you, please let me know via a message (Or a voice message on Spotify) and have your chance to have it shared on a future episode.

The challenges for adults with dyslexia go far beyond spelling and reading which is what dyslexia is most commonly known for.

At Dyslexia in Adults, we are determined to talk about the reality of being an adult with dyslexia, which includes addressing all of the challenges that comes with it and addressing what support is really needed.

Something that is not often discussed is how dyslexia affects energy levels and feeling tired.

In this episode, I explain why adults with dyslexia are more prone to feeling tired and why taking breaks is essential.

This episode is inspired by the Dyslexia in Adults community 'The Hive'

Key topics:

Have you felt like you can't wait to get away from a boss or manager?

Often what I've found is that you want to leave that boss or manager so much that you jump straight into another job with similar issues.

The thing is I hadn't understood what my dyslexia is for me and what works for me, so why did I expect an employer to understand.

The best thing that worked for me was understanding my dyslexia better and find systems and ways of working that work with my brain and not against it.

The hardest thing was then being able to discuss this with my boss or manger.

In this episode I share what's helped me and many other dyslexics in funding harmony in their work place by finding what strategies works for them.

How much do you understand about dyslexia and slow processing?

Slow processing is one of those dyslexia challenges which is possibly the worst for impacting confidence.

I get it all the time! Some of the simplest questions takes me ages to answer and while I am trying figure out the answer, the overwhelming feeling of embarrassment overtakes everything and you're left feeling rubbish.

You also be made to feel even worse when other judge you.

However, I also get those times when I can answer instantly some of the most complex questions and explain it ways that everyone can understand using narrative reasoning. This leaves others perplexed at how you managed to find the answer so quickly. And sometimes, people won't believe you because the other 9 out of 10 times you've not so quick to answer.

Frustrating isn't it!?

So... let's break it down so we can understand it better and build confidence.

In this episode I share clips from a recent master class I presented all on slow processing, how it affects our confidence but also how it can help build confidence!

Does having dyslexia make you feel "stupid"?

It used to make me feel this way so much that this word "stupid" is for me the worst word in the dictionary!

I've had enough people in my life use this word to describe me. But, I didn't need their help! The biggest problem was telling myself that I am "Stupid" and I know this is the case for so many of you too!

This week's episode is exploring why dyslexia make us feel so "stupid" and why, most importantly, being dyslexic is the way to beat this self-deficating mindset to find success with dyslexia.

In my experience, it has alot to do with the environment we operate within.

  • Why I hate the word "Stupid"
  • Why dyslexia is the cause of these feelings, and

I often used to think that there were some jobs that dyslexic people just couldn't do.

Now, after meeting 1,000's of people with dyslexia, from all backgrounds and careers, I have to say I have been supprised by the vast variety and difference in the types of jobs where dyslexic people are thriving.

This has changed my thinking that people with dyslexia can do any job they wish. But what separates those that thrive and those that find it challenging.

I've pinned it down to; dyslexic people can do any job they wish, providing they have the right systems and support in place to thrive.

In this episode, I share with you the steps I take with my 1:1 clients to help them find ways in which they can thrive in their career!

I can't do that, I am dyslexic... Is what I used to say to myself ALL the time.

I used to rule my life by what I believed I couldn't do BECAUSE I have dyslexia.

I let this modest stop me from doing some many things, like learning to drive, and didn't apply for a grad scheme, and the BIGGEST one is, learning another language.

If you have listened to a few of these podcasts now then you will be aware that I am shattering at least one of these old beliefs that held me back by learning to speak Spanish.

What's my point here? Well... the reason why I want to address this topic and mindset in this episode is because I see it alot on my 1:1 dyslexia coaching clients, that these beliefs of "I can't" are hold them back from even trying. Even things from their childhood at school is where some of these beliefs started having been holding them back their entire adulthood.

What I have noticed in myself and others is that, sometimes we use these "I can't" phrase to protect ourselves from the humiliation of trying and failing.

There's no blame here, I get it, I've been there myself.

In this podcast I share with you the step by step process I go through with my 1:1 clients to break down what is actually at play here so that we can see what these "I can't" statements are really about and then challenge the perspective to grow a new mind set and find success, and hopefully... try something you've always wanted to do but never had the courage.

Key topics:

  • Identify these "I can't" statements
  • Understand where these "I can't" statements come from and what do they mean, and
  • How we can reframe "I can't" to build better mindset for success.

Episode 23 - A Dyslexic Workplace Success Story with Paula Felstead

  • Traits and examples of adult dyslexia
  • How to build confidence with dyslexia
  • Simple and easy to impliment tips on

This episode is a little bit different as I am joined by special guest Paula Felstead.

Paula's inspiring story is that of success following removing negative thoughts of dyslexia, setting up systems that work for her, and leaning into her strengths.

Paula also shares the same belief that refering to dyslexia as a 'superpower' is totally unrelatable to most people with dyslexia and is often unhelpful to the specific challenges of dyslexia in adults.

A little bit about Paula;

I am a Chief Technology & Operations Officer for an international traveltech company with 25+ experience in technology and business transformation across multiple industries. I am also a non-executive director for a French publicly listed company.

I have lived and worked with dyslexia and dyspraxia since was diagnosed aged 10. have learned to play to my strengths and manage the areas where struggle, not always 100% but good enough to keep progressing. I struggle to relate to the two popular ideas at the moment,

1) dyslexia is a super power its not, we just think and process things differently, and

2) that somehow these ways of thinking are disorders, syndromes, or development failures, my view is that our brains naturally developed differently. The fact that a large proportion of the world doesn't cope very well with our capabilities is something that we need to wNork on but it doesn't mean that somehow we are 'less' than others.

Key topics:

  • Being diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia at age 10,
  • Removing the negative thoughts about dyslexia,
  • Setting up systems to work with the way I think, and
  • Leaning into my strengths.

I bet this sounds familiar...

You sit in a meeting thinking, don't think that idea is going to work but instead of listening to that thought you dismiss it because you presume that there is something that you don't know.

And if that sounds familiar, bet this resonates too...

you regularly get compliments from friends and famnily on how you give the best advice but you dismiss those compliments because it comes so naturally to you. When you are told that the way you think is impressive, its easy to dismiss as "no big deal, it's so obvious that anyone could have done it".

Well, while you're dismissing these thoughts and compliments, you're missing your hidden dyslexic strengths. The thing that can make all the challenges feel worth it. Which is why I created my 1:1 coaching program to work with clients to identify their dyslexic strengths and understand how these strengths are a value to your career. In this episode share with you the exercise go through with my coaching 1:1 sessions so you can start to find those hidden dyslexic strengths.

You don't need me to tell you what are the challenges you face as an adult with dyslexia. You know it! You can feel it! I can't even tell you want your dyslexic strengths are. You know all the answers, and all I do is help you find them.

I have been working as a coach for dyslexic adults for some time now and I have seen it all. The most common occurance is helping people break down what their challenges are and identify what their strengths are, and then help find systems what work with you and not againts you.

As a coach, I know you have allthe answers and me telling you wouldn't be right but also, you won't own it. That not what coaches do. Coaches, like myself, hold space so that you can talk through your challenges, and ask questions so you can identfy you strengths and what works for you.

In this epsiode I share with you all the benefits of working with a dysleixa coach to boost your confident and realise your potential.

Episode 16 - People with Dyslexia Shouldn't do this

Join the Newsletter here: Newsletter

We're all guilty of it. But this seemingly very little thing could be doing more harm than good and everyone with dyslexia should stop doing it now.

What am I talking about?

Well... in this week's episode I am discussing why people with dyslexia should stop using little jokes about our challenges with dyslexia as a defence mechanism to hide our insecurities.

This is what I use to do until I realised that at each catch-up or appraisal with my manager, they would bring it up as a negative.

What I know now and share with everyone is to stop covering up little challenges or mistakes with little 'off-the-cuff' jokes and focus on the positives and strengths of dyslexia.

This way, you will start to build confidence, but your managers or boss will also notice the strengths more than the challenges.

Key topics:

  • We're all guilty of masking our insecurities with a little joke,
  • Why these little self-protection jokes are actually doing more harm than good, and
  • How to turn the attention to the strengths of dyslexia and build more confidence!

I'm Natalie and I am incredibly passionate about talking specifically about adult dyslexia.

It also doesn’t help those people who want to help adults with dyslexia; line managers, work colleagues, friends, family, if the only information available is that to support children as opposed to what it means to have dyslexia in adulthood.

I have rolled up my sleeves, and I am determined to create a space where we only talk about adult dyslexia. It's not part of the conversation, it is the conversation.
