The Saltworks are the stories of real faith from real people in the real world. Saltworks by definition is a place where salt is refined as well as a job often viewed as drudgery. But it’s in the unseen places where people just like you are refined walking faithfully in their everyday lives, because God works in the saltworks. The Bible is full of these people, and they live right next door to you. They are the salt of the earth. These are their stories, and this is your story.
It’s the Season 2 season finale today, and it just so happens to coincide with mine and Andrew’s 13th wedding anniversary! Naturally, we decided to do something special and a little different to commemorate the two! Today on the podcast for the first time this season is my husband Andrew, and we are talking all about intentionality in marriage. What began as taking questions for a Q&A ended up being mostly questions on this very topic! So we took that and ran with it and today to end this wonderful year of the Saltworks, we are talking about how we can be intentional with the Lord, each other, in communication, grace, and accountability— even in the busiest seasons. In today’s episode, whether you hear a quote, thought, or verse you’ve never heard before or it was just sweet reminders for you, we hope you feel encouraged and ultimately, that you hear God’s truth. A beautiful soul named Felicia Toler is on the podcast today, and I cannot wait to share her miraculous story of shame turned into hope and darkness replaced by light. Felicia and I met at the end of Season 1 when she sent me the most encouraging email after listening to the Saltworks. In that email, Felicia shared with me the miracle that is her life today, and now one year later, I am getting the honor to share it with you. It is the kind of story that we just don’t get to hear much, because it can be difficult to share, but Felicia was so brave and so kind to come and share it with us today. I do want to disclaim for anyone with younger kids or for those who may find some of today’s conversation triggering, that we do talk about abortion and suicide. Felicia boldly and vulnerably discloses parts of her story that many may not know and with those, the hope of Jesus Christ and the miraculous healing that he can and does bring into our stories. Despite the hard road you will hear and the darkness she has walked through, Felicia is so full of joy and spreads light to all she meets. The Lord has good plans for her yet, and I can’t wait for you to hear her story and be encouraged.
I want to say to anyone who has or is struggling with thoughts of suicide or depression, please tell someone. Please reach out to someone and know that you are not alone and those thoughts are not the verdict nor is this darkness the end of the story. There is hope, and his name is Jesus.
This week on the podcast is my new friend Liz Armour, and y'all she is a wise one! Liz is a former engineer turned homeschool mom, and she is brilliant at everything she puts her mind to. She blew me away with today’s episode. Guys, Reeves Walker is on the podcast this week, and you do not want to miss it! It’s another Topic Tuesday on the podcast today, so you know we had to bring our favorite co-host Lindsay back! This is a topic we discuss a lot behind the scenes, so this week we decided why not have the conversation on the podcast? Dying to self— it’s not always our most favorite topic. Yet, when we really take a deep dive into what that is and what it might look like, we find that we gain far more than we could ever imagine.

Wendy is a wife, a mom, a foster parent, and on staff at North Monroe as the Local Missions and Hospitality Director, she helps run Project 2.5+, and so much more. Wendy’s story sheds new light on her heart for others to be welcomed, seen, and loved wherever she goes.
Today, Wendy and I talk about perfectionism, self-sufficiency, wanting others to fill the role of Savior in relationships, and that deep familiar feeling of “I’m not enough.” Wendy brings such good news into all of these topics, and how peaceful that surrender to Jesus can look no matter what we are facing. Megan Garrott is a force to be reckoned with! When the internet is questionable, she just jumps in her car and holds her phone for an hour for a podcast episode! If you don’t know and love Megan, you are going to by the end of today! Megan is a mother of 3 boys, a judge, a wife, and a devoted volunteer in the youth. Though she has undoubtedly been through hardships, Megan focuses on what some may consider a “boring testimony”. However, there truly is no story in following the Lord that is ever boring. Through Megan’s eyes, we get to see the faithfulness of God through His protection and the legacy of faith laid before her in her own family and in her in-law’s family. She is a true servant who is always laughing, and she’s the epitome of the person who shows up for those she loves. We talk about everything from faith to having other voices who pour into our children. In this episode, you’ll hear a focus on the importance of looking back and remembering what the Lord has done and how simply remembering can bring confidence in what we face today. Even more, that confident trust brings with it protection as we refuse to take things into our own hands and continue to wait on the Lord and allow our hearts to take courage. Today’s guest is just a delight! Jan Lee, aka “Parker’s mom” is on the podcast today, and you are going to just love her. Her story has had many twists and turns including a divorce at 23, navigating life as a single mom, and then following her second husband into ministry. What I love so much about this episode is the beautiful ways the Lord pursued a young girl and a young mom that didn’t necessarily have a Godly community to pour into her. But we serve a creative God that will chase us down by any means—even TV and radio shows! Nothing can stop the Lord. Because of her background, you will hear the importance and weight that she attributes to the Word of God. It was such a needed reminder for me, and I know it will be for you too! Lastly, you will hear Jan’s heart for foster care and the beautiful work she and her husband have been able to do. What you may not know is how her own story connects her to the children’s pain and brings the compassion we all see in her. You will love today’s episode and Jan Lee!

But we figured for the first video and the 50th episode, what better to talk about than how the Saltworks began, why we chose that name, what it's looked like to step out in faith, and what our vision is for going forward. It has been a learning curve for nearly 2 years now, and it's not slowing down anytime soon. I can't wait to see what the Lord has for the Saltworks, and I can't wait for you to listen in today!
Let me tell you something. You aren't ready. You aren't. ready. I first got to know Mrs. Carol about 6 or 7 years ago when I was placed in a group intended for the older women to disciple and pour into the younger women. I was a young mom of a toddler and a newborn, and as I sat there in her kitchen and living room, I distinctly remember thinking, "this is holy places." It's Mrs. Carol's faith, joy, contentment, servant's heart, and the incredible endurance she's had to have to overcome hardship. Yet she would welcome younger women into her home and pour into us, cooking for us, and sharing her wisdom-- it's just holy work of a resilient woman who walks closely with the Lord. So I can't tell you the honor it was for me to sit once again at her kitchen table and get to share her story with you. Before we recorded, I was telling her about my busy day and all the new in our lives. She immediately asked if I'd eaten and fed me, because she just sees people. Of course afterwards she sent me home with bags full of homemade cookies. We laughed and we cried, and before I left I told her I was nervous about something. I started to step out of the front door, and she called out again, "Hallie, just enjoy tonight. Just enjoy it." And I teared up, because she didn't know that's my word of the year, but the Lord did. He knew that's the reminder I needed to just rest in the work he's ALREADY doing. But that's just who Mrs. Carol is. And once again, I left thinking, "this is holy places." And so today, I just feel really honored and humbled to share these holy places of surrender through Mrs. Carol's story with you.
This week we are diving into God's Word together into the book of Acts. Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch are both men who sought God in different ways and whose stories collided by God's sovereignty. We will take a look at what it looks like to have blind obedience, how it might feel, and what's actually necessary to give our "yes" in faithfulness. Looking at life through the lens of Philip's mission is both convicting and inspiring, because he didn't always know how or when or why, but he always knew who he was following. You will love the beautiful salvation story for the Ethiopian eunuch if you've never heard it or haven't read it in a while. Although not our usual format, I truly do love these weeks to dive into these stories and put ourselves in their shoes.

So today as we go through each one, we look at what has brought us here, what may be underneath the feelings, and ultimately, what we can do with those. Our friend Erik Hsu is on the podcast today, and you do not want to miss it! He has an incredible story of a kid with lots of inconsistent pieces that formed his childhood. Yet, you will hear in that same story, a God who consistently chased him down and brought people alongside him no matter where life took him. A big thing for Erik is the evidence of God because his story is full of exactly that. At a young age with divorced parents, Erik went from no routine to rigid structure and then continued to make multiple moves. He tells about his season of rebellion against pressure and expectations and how that same spirit led him to want to master golf. Having grown up in poverty, you can see his wisdom as a current financial advisor and the balanced perspective he brings to each one of his clients. He also shares how he's learned to combat perfectionism and reframe his mindset. There is so much more wisdom, and I cannot wait for you to see the evidence of God in his story today.
This one is a definite notetaker, parents!! In today's episode, Jayme Stokes will offer parenting advice right alongside much-needed grace and permission for your heart. While she encourages parents today that even in our mistakes, we aren't failing, she also gives so much wisdom on how we might set them up for a good relationship with the Lord. We covered so many questions such as: how we can present the gospel in day-to-day life, what are realistic expectations for ourselves, and how the Lord gave us these specific children for a reason. Diving deep into practical tips, we also cover the importance of outside play, some unsupervised time, sensory needs our children have, and even how to validate their emotions without letting them rule. I promise you do NOT want to miss this one, friends! The balance of how-to and compassion is just so needed in today's world, and you will absolutely love it.
On the podcast today is the sweetest soul Jamie Halley. She is down-to-earth, loyal, and so kind. Once a shy girl, she loves to share all who will listen about Jesus. Her story has not been an easy one, though. While we didn't get into some other seasons of her story that I would have loved to, today we camped out on her and Jonathon's marriage testimony. Though they both have walked through many trials and times of darkness, they have been incredibly brave and courageous to share their story to help and protect other couples. Today we will talk about spiritual darkness, the need for security, marriage, infidelity, and what marriage reconciliation can look like only through the Lord. You will love this girl's heart and appreciate her honest vulnerability. I can't say thank you enough to both her and Jonathon for graciously and boldly sharing what so many need to hear, and I can't wait for yall to listen!
Today we are trying something new, and my longtime best friend and NOW co-worker Lindsay Stagg is on the podcast to cover some hard but necessary topics. Don't worry, the stories you and I love so much are not disappearing, but this will allow us to go into depth on some of the issues we touch on. Today, we are covering why boundaries are needed, how to gauge if we need them, and how they are both biblical and personal. We also talk about making hard decisions for our family, the feeling of being misunderstood, and what we can do when that happens. Ultimately, all of these tie in closely with our want to people-please. What is people-pleasing? How do we know we are driven by this, and what does the gospel have to say about it? Jamie Owen is on the podcast today, and you're going to love her! Sometimes, we're looking at the faithfulness of God unfolding before us, and other times, like much of Jamie's life, we are looking back at all the times He was there protecting us when we didn't even see it. Today we talk about Jamie's story of slowly getting to know Jesus over the course of her life. Through growing up with grandparents, tumultuous relationships with her own parents, a divorce, and a season of loneliness, Jamie looks back and paints a picture for us of a Shepherd who was there pursuing and leading her to where she is today. Jamie's story highlights both the lies we can sometimes believe about feeling uninvited or unequipped and also the powerful life-change we can be a part of when we simply show others the Christ in us. What I love so much about Jamie's story is the bold faith He's instilled in her today! It's infectious and inspiring, and you're just going to love it!
Believe me when I say, you need this WHOLE episode. Parker Lee is on the podcast today, and there is just so much freedom in the message he shares. Parker takes us through his journey of getting into ministry, becoming a missionary, and then the hardship that followed through cancer and deep heartbreak. What I love most about this episode today is the honesty of what still feels broken and yet how good God still is despite it all. Today we talk about finding our identities in what we do and learning to be honest with where we are. There's freedom in those spaces where we give ourselves and others permission to just be and feel. As Parker put it, "He's still there even in the brokenness. He's been broken Himself." We study and talk a lot about who God is on this podcast. We talk about his character, what he's done, and what he is able to do. Our lives must become centered around how we see God. But what are you believing about how he sees you? Because we can toss around the phrase "it's not about you," in a lot of different scenarios and many would be true. But sometimes I think we take it too far inside the church by removing a very crucial detail from the gospel. Because while the Bible and the life of Jesus were inevitably about him, both are for you. His grace, love, and mercy are for you. He's not just a good shepherd; he's YOUR Good Shepherd. He sees you. He invites you. So today, as you press play, don't numb and don't explain away these affirmations for someone else. They're for you, and they have the capability of changing our lives, if only we'll let them.
Man, oh man. I really enjoy visiting with this woman, and today you will certainly see why! Lu Ann Butler is a dear family friend, and she lives her life with such passion and conviction that you just can't help but join in! Today she shares wisdom, insight, a beautiful view on mentorship, but ultimately she tells a story about a day when she had lost sight of hope. Lu Ann vulnerably and courageously shares about her battle with clinical depression and a particular moment when all felt hopeless. You will hear her talk about what the word regeneration has meant in her life throughout the episode, and I can't wait for you to hear how God showed up at that moment and regenerated her hope that has not ever been shaken again despite many hardships along the way. He truly is a good, good Father, and he truly does bring redemption and new life into everything he touches. My pastor's wife, my middle school camp chaperone, my high school small group leader, and my mother-in-law Amy Dye is on the podcast today, and it is gold! Andrew co-hosted with me, and Amy had to give us all her disclaimers of how much this is outside of her comfort zone, BUT you will see what a blessing it was that she pushed past those fears to share and how many times she's done that in order to be faithful in her story. Y'all, Jean Brown is on the podcast today and I can't wait for you to get to know her! She is my aunt by marriage, and everybody's biggest cheerleader. One thing I hear people say often is that they don't really have "a story," or in Jean's case, "a lane." But what I love is that her heart and her intentionality to do ministry wherever she's planted IS her lane. Today we talk about how she views life as the great adventure even amidst some incredibly hard and life-changing times. What a powerful marriage testimony today from Jon Gimber on the podcast! I wanted to give a heads-up to any parents with kids at home, we do cover some adult topics, so make sure you filter through before playing it in front of little ears. What I love is Jon's willingness to face his fears to lay out the good, bad, and ugly if it helps one person to hear truth. What amazes me is the self-awareness and honesty it took in Jon and Megan's stories to see their own brokenness and how that may be affecting each other. Jon also does such a great job of illustrating how sacrificial love should play out within the confines of marriage. I hope you enjoy the conversation and I pray the Lord will use for his glory!
I LOVE THIS GIRL! Clara Crossland is the wisest, old soul in the most adorable young person. Her story is a neat perspective that really inspires my vision for the Saltworks-- that everyone truly has a story to tell. Right alongside that truth is the message that God paints the most purpose-filled, unique stories in the lives of those who are simply willing to trust him. Just to hear Clara talk about her husband and family is to be blessed by her wisdom and faithfulness. What you might not know, however, is how they met and eloped in a very short amount of time. What I love seeing in Clara's story is the way God can move in unconventional ways building an unconventional story all to the glory of his name. I can't wait for yall to listen and get to know my good friend Clara!
Are you struggling to step out in faith? Last week we talked about unbelief, but this week we're digging a little deeper into our doubts. Even when we fully believe God's word, we can still question if we're where we're supposed to be. If we can actually do what the Lord’s called us to. Oftentimes in our obedience we can begin to doubt if we heard correctly or how to move forward. Maybe you feel you have been faithful yet the circumstances seem impossible or against you. It becomes easy in these seasons to question our standing and sink into a panic. Peter knew this feeling better than anyone. But I think you'll find that this was actually where Peter, the rock, found his footing in Jesus.

What continues to be so beautiful about the Saltworks is how every voice, culture, perspective, and every age can teach us something. Angel Pourrajabi is on the podcast today, and it's just gold. Her heart, her humor, and the faith in her incredible story are all so contagious. Angel shares how she grew up in Uganda and was adopted at age 12. She gives us perspective of how God was seen at that time in Uganda and how she sees Him now. I love the beautiful picture she paints of a young girl with an impossible dream and how a faithful God has continued to lead her along that path despite all odds and many obstacles. We also talk about His faithfulness despite our own faulty expectations and what it looks like to seek Him amidst singleness. Yall. What an amazing story, and what an amazing person to boldly share it. Gaelin Craighead is on the podcast today, and she is everything brave and vulnerable all in one. Stories like Gaelin's are the very heart of why this podcast is important to me, because without hearing someone's background, we'd really have no idea what people have had to overcome. You will see that theme so strongly in her story, but at the same time, the beautiful way she paints God's provision all throughout the hardship. Gaelin's story comes from a childhood of two alcoholics and the many hardships that go along with it, so just a heads up for parents out there. Welcome back to the Saltworks, friends! It's Season 2, and we're starting out strong, because Christina Albritton is on the podcast this week! She's a mom of 3, a pastor's wife, a 7th grade teacher, and one of my real life friends. She's the trip guru, fun-planner, and deep talks at sonic friend. In our episode today we talk about Christina's perception of feeling behind when she became a Christian and how that can feel as an adult walking into the church. We talk about how to deal with those feelings and what to do about them. We talk a lot on adoption and the calling we have as believers to support those with who feel the call to adopt. We talk about the feeling of inadequacy at all stages and the need to control or chase perfection-- and the truth that Jesus brings us in that. Dr. Amy Givler is on the podcast this morning and it is SO good. What a way to wind down the very first season of the Saltworks. Amy shares with us today first and foremost that her identity is rooted in being a follower of Christ, and you will see that in so many ways. Beginning with her incredible story of how she became a Christian and continuing through every season following. The words I hear in my heart when Amy shares her story with us today are faith and assurance-- both of which she has so firmly placed in Jesus over and over. You'll hear that today as we talk about her journey through medical school, early years of marriage, building a family unit, her walk through cancer, and both her career as a doctor and a writer. I mean, y'all!! The woman has done it all! And in every step, she shows us how to be rooted in the Word and unafraid to be counter-cultural. This episode is just packed FULL of wisdom and faith, just like it's guest Emily Cassis. For those of you who know her, you know this. For those of you who don't, you're just going to love her! The reason we cannot fully know what love is without knowing its Creator is because it does indeed come in many different forms, and so it must be understood from the heart of love itself. From the very character of God. Because love is this way, pride is much the same. We could not rightly recognize pride, though perhaps in one example, without knowing its origins as well. And the reason is much the same. Love grows without us realizing it because when we are faithful and obedient consistently, we will one day look back and realize it was growing all along, though so slowly, seeming like nothing was happening. Pride however, purposefully grows unnoticed, because we do not want to see it. Pride does not always portray itself as such, which I would argue is the most devastating kind. And the reason for this is that its origins come straight from the father of lies himself. And he does not show himself as such, but disguises himself as an angel of light. If his very character is to disguise himself as light, why would pride prance around as what it truly is? No, its quieter. More sinister, and more times than not, is disguised also as light and good.
Today we talk all about what pride actually is, how to see it in our lives, how we've gotten there, and how to face it head on. The only way to walk free from pride is through the antidote of humility, but we must rightly understand how to do that-- and that's going to come through the example of Jesus Christ, Humility Himself.

Well I got wild and crazy this week, because I waited until the very last minute to record, let alone edit, this week's episode. I thought I knew what I wanted to talk about, but the Lord changed it at the last minute which meant extra reading and writing prior to recording. BUT I'm so glad I waited, because the Lord had a different plan. Today's Saltworks podcast guest is Moses, and we're diving into the background of his story before he became a famous speaker. More specifically, all the reasons he didn't think he could speak. Sound familiar? I think you'll find his list personal and offensive (if you're anything like me), but you will also find God's responses to his doubts patient, gracious, and filled with courage to you. He's still the same God, and he's still calling us to boldly share the message he's given us, step into the mission set before us, and build his kingdom. We finally got him! Pastor Bill Dye, aka Andrew's Dad, aka my father-in-law, aka "Pop" is on the podcast today! It was one of those episodes where sick kids, thunderstorm warnings, sore throats, and overall oppression couldn't stop us. And although I don't think he was a big fan of the attention or public praise, he was a good sport and has such a good story. Not just the change in his life as a younger man, but the longevity and faithfulness he's walked ever since and continues still to walk. Of course we talk about his story in this episode, but we also talk on: life of a pastor, the various roles, overcoming how people viewed you before salvation, expectations, parenting as a pastor, and even withstanding criticism in a public role. Honestly, she does this every day, but today she shares it with us on the Saltworks. I met Laura this past fall through a women's retreat, and let me tell you, she is a gifted teacher and speaker. And YES! I am trying to get her to start a podcast because I know you'd listen too! What I love about Laura is the peace she brings that so clearly reflects a heart after the Lord. Though she has experienced lows, heartache, and loss, what defines her life most clearly is her faith in a good God. Despite miscarriages and an unexpected diagnosis, she continued to and still continues to seek the Lord in it all. Despite her work ethic and her story, there is a deep rest in a God who holds all things. Laura's message today and her life itself is built on not just learning about the Lord but truly knowing him intimately and ultimately so that she doesn't miss him in any aspect. Pull out your notebook and bible, friends, you're gonna want both near for this episode!
It's hard to write a description when you're honestly just speechless. This story and this episode... you just don't want to miss it. Aly's spirit just shines wherever she goes, and her story alone has been such a blessing to so many for the last 11 years. However, today she approached the microphone from a place of celebrating miracles, but also from the middle of the story with lots of unknowns. She shares so much beauty in her testimony as she continues to glorify the Lord, but the way she shares today through the tears, clinging to a hope in things not yet seen... it's just amazing. That is her belief in a good and gracious God no matter what. What faith and what courage. I hope today's episode meets you where you are in your journey and in your faith in the hard seasons. I hope it's a reminder as we go into this Christmas season that while all else may change and even fall away, He never will. A Savior has come, and that can never be taken from us. Sometimes the last thing we're known for is our story. More often we're known for what we make it and the legacy we lead. This is definitely true of Jayme Stokes, and yet our stories make our legacies that much more powerful. She's been a mom, wife, librarian, teacher, grandparent, principal, and boss. She practices what she preaches, and she brings laughter into every situation. You will be moved by her story and the hardships she's overcome and you will be in awe of the faith she carries right now, today. Even though she did send me to the principal's office once over an honest misunderstanding we still can't be certain of who was right... I love her dearly, and you will too. Her hope for tomorrow is not in what tomorrow might bring but in who holds it. And parents, grab a pen, because you're going to want to jot down some parenting advice today!
Five years ago we gained the sweetest neighbors, and I cannot wait for you to meet Jim! He is a retired golf pro, a servant, he’s kind, and he’s always moving. But what you might not know are the things he’s had to overcome in his story, and the truth that he’s clung to in his endurance. We talk retirement, overcoming, endurance, weaknesses, and where we ultimately find our identities. If you didn’t already know and love him, you will after today!
She is a master at events, details, and organization, but I bet you don't know this part of her story. I learned from her today, and I learn from her every day because she's my mom! I've gotten to see her be so many things, wearing many hats and filling many roles, but today I saw her be brave and courageous to share. Come join us at the table as we reflect back on events in our lives, how God was present, and how he's done the impossible. She challenges us today to think back on what we'd tell our younger selves and where we see God's provision that we may have taken for granted. As we lead into this week of thankfulness, let's accept the challenge and look back on the timeline. What are the events that made us question Him, and what is actually true? Let's enter his gates with thanksgiving, and make habits of gratitude, praying for the impossible.

Oh, where to start on Blake Davis? I will not lie and say it wasn't a little scary to have my husband Andrew co-hosting AND Blake as a guest at the same time. I really thought I had my editing cut out for me, but don't worry, they were both on their best behavior. Blake is our Worship Pastor at our local church, he wrote the incredible music for this podcast, and he's involved in so many more areas of ministry.
