Hello folks. In this episode Brian and I discuss the 9th anniversary party of our employer, the Squeaky Wheel Bike Shop, and my participation in the 2023 Whiskey Off Road event in Prescott, AZ. It's been a wild ride for the Squeaky Wheel Bike Shop over the years. Growing from a small store in Palmdale into a 2 location operation that has dominated the region and become the destination for cyclists from near and far for new bikes and parts. It's been a pleasure being part of the growth of the business for over 4 years. The Whiskey Off Road event is a blast. Over 2,000 people were signed up to ride in various distances in the sweet offroad trails of Prescott. I made some new friends and got to reconnect with riders I met last year. Good times were had and my host Robert said it best, "Get some."

His dedication to the sport, and his business acumen, has made the shop the hub of mountain biking in the area and helped to build a dedicated dirt culture that welcomes riders of all abilities to the shop and the trails. This week we’re talking with my longtime friend Henry Philemon III. He’s the maestro of garage DIY when it comes to modifying and building bike frames. We talk about our shared experience at a bike frame building class in 2011, moving his family to Oregon, and his journey back to the midwest where he lives now in the thumb of Michigan, and much more. There are two things to keep in mind when listening to the pod this week, there is a slight delay between our choice words but we get through it just fine. 2nd thing is the bike shop where henry worked at in Medford Oregon wasn’t Cyclefit but was actually Cycle Sport. Cycle Fit was the second shop he worked at and managed in Michigan.

Welcome to episode 2 of the Bicycle Words Podcast.
This week your hosts Paul Avila and Brian Peterson bring you a fascinating interview with Robert Cantrell. He's been a mountain biker for over 15 years and is currently living in the mountain bike friendly town of Prescott, Arizona. We lay out his beginnings in the mountain bike world, riding one of the worst mountain bikes ever made, touch on a connection with Brian years ago, and then we take a deep dive into his incredible story of overcoming a life-threatening addiction. He was ultimately able to conquer the demons with professional recovery help and the bicycle. In Robert's case cycling truly saved his life.
We think you're going to be amazed at the reinvention of his life that he was able to successfully actualize. Robert is a man of his word and he doesn't hold back. Sadly many people with addiction do not recover and ultimately lose their life however in Robert's case he was able to realize that the path he was on was a literal dead end and he made the decision to get help. Get ready for the goods folks, he lays it out there in real words and gives details on what it took to get a positive outcome.
