In this episode, hosts Dewald Kirsten and Louise Brodie speak with Rocco Renaldi, Chair for Public Affairs and Government Relations at Edelman, about the critical role of policy, public perception, and lobbying in the battle to keep South African citrus flowing into Europe.
With nearly 20 years representing the Citrus Growers Association (CGA) in Brussels, Rocco offers a behind-the-scenes look at the European Union’s complex regulatory environment, the persistent threat of phytosanitary barriers like Citrus Black Spot and False Codling Moth, and the strategic decision to take the fight to the World Trade Organization.
Beyond trade, this conversation explores branding, global consumer psychology, political fragmentation, and how perceptions of agriculture can either help or hinder market access. Rocco also reveals why South African citrus is his "favourite client" and reflects on how this industry has grown in strength, unity, and global significance.
Key Takeaways:
•South African citrus growers have faced escalating EU trade challenges for decades, but exports have grown due to persistent lobbying.
•Many EU phytosanitary regulations are being used as non-tariff trade barriers, often influenced by protectionist agendas in Spain.
•The WTO case launched by South Africa is a milestone move aimed at impartial adjudication—not a declaration of war.
•Consumer awareness campaigns and branding could be better leveraged by agriculture, but they require long-term investment.
•There is a widening perception gap between European policymakers and African producers—direct exposure and diplomacy are key to bridging it.
•Year-round citrus trade strengthens European logistics and packhouse infrastructure, even as parts of Europe lobby against imports.
•The CGA's unified levy-funded model is a global example of industry collaboration and advocacy success.

Welcome to Episode 18 of Lucentlands, where hosts Dewald Kirsten and Louise Brodie dive into the fascinating world of high-tech bee projects. In this episode, they had the privilege of interviewing Bee-Tech, a company dedicated to bee research, pollination services, and honey production.
Bee-Tech understands the critical role bees play in our ecosystem and the challenges they face due to pesticides and changing environments. They have evolved from a beekeeping business into a specialized research and pollination service, striving to optimize pollination methods to better serve their clients.
Jaimee Harris, Bee-Tech's expert researcher, brings a wealth of knowledge to the team with her degrees in Botany and Entomology from Rhodes University, South Africa. Her expertise contributes to the company's commitment to excellence in service, science, research, and quality bee management. One of Bee-Tech's core services is pollination, wherein they provide hives to farmers during critical blossoming seasons. With a hassle-free approach, their team strategically places, manages, and collects the hives, ensuring successful pollination. Crops such as blueberries, almonds, macadamia, canola, carrot, onion, and kiwi benefit from Bee-Tech's expert bees each year.
Recognizing the importance of research, Bee-Tech focuses on building a comprehensive database of information through crop-specific trials. Different regions and crops have unique challenges, necessitating adapted pollination strategies. Their research activities encompass pollination practices, bee vectoring, and biocontrol services, all aimed at furthering our understanding of the vital role bees play in agriculture and ecology.Through their Queen Rearing Project, Bee-Tech has achieved sustainable and consistent hive production, eliminating the need to trap swarms. This innovative approach ensures a reliable supply of hives for their pollination services. Bee-Tech specializes in managing two sub-species of honeybees in South Africa: Apis Mellifera Scutellata, also known as the African Honey Bee, in the northern regions, and Apis Mellifera Capensis, or the Cape Honey Bee, in the southern regions.
In addition to their research and pollination endeavors, Bee-Tech is involved in honey production. Their hives are strategically moved between flowering crops to maximize honey production. The result is a range of delicious polyflora, citrus, and canola honey, each harvested seasonally.
Join Dewald Kirsten and Louise Brodie as they unravel the world of Bee-Tech, exploring the intersection of technology, bees, and the future of sustainable agriculture. In this episode of the Dewald Kirsten and Louise Brodie show, we sit down with Mike Allsopp, or Mr Bee as he is commonly referred to in South Africa, to discuss the pressing challenges facing bees in the country.
Throughout the conversation, we explore the various obstacles that bees face, including the lack of support from the South African government, which has left many beekeepers struggling to make ends meet. Additionally, we examine the destruction of natural fodder, which is essential to the survival of bees and their ability to pollinate local crops.
Vandalism is another major issue that we delve into, as many beekeepers have reported incidents of hives being tampered with or stolen altogether. This not only results in a loss of income for the beekeepers but also threatens the overall health and sustainability of bee populations in the region.
Furthermore, the increasing number of beekeepers in South Africa, from household beekeepers to commercial operations, has put a strain on the available food sources for bees. This has led to many bees being underfed and malnourished, which can ultimately lead to a decline in their numbers and ability to pollinate. Join us as we discuss these pressing issues and shed light on the important role that bees play in our ecosystem and food supply.
With Mr Bee's expert insights, we hope to inspire greater awareness and action toward protecting these vital pollinators.

Breaking Barriers in Plant Genetics: Dr. Renee Prins’ Journey to Founding CenGen
In the latest episode of the Lucentlands Podcast, we sit down with Dr. Renee Prins, founder of CenGen, a plant genetics platform based in the small town of Worcester, South Africa. Despite facing many challenges as a woman alone in the business world, Dr. Prins has created a successful enterprise that provides specialized R&D services to plant breeders and the agricultural industry.
Dr. Prins obtained her Ph.D. in Genetics from Stellenbosch University and has a key interest in working with plant and pathogen species that are important to agriculture. Her passion for this field led her to establish CenGen in 2003, with the goal of creating a plant genetics platform and providing skilled personnel with the opportunity to continue their careers in science, despite being based far from major academic centers.
From a humble beginning as an owner-managed business, CenGen has developed into a fully-fledged enterprise that implements new strategic and business processes on a continuous basis, in order to be fit for the future in an environment of ongoing technology innovation. A primary focus at CenGen is to provide services on par with international standards and to maintain strong links with international peers and collaborators.
In the podcast, Dr. Prins talks about the challenges she faced as a woman alone in the business world, especially in a small town like Worcester. She discusses how she overcame these challenges and managed to build a successful enterprise, providing skilled personnel with the opportunity to continue their careers in science.
Dr. Prins also talks about the exciting endeavors CenGen is currently undertaking, including an attempt to clone a number of wheat disease resistance genes in collaboration with an expert team at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. Should the project be successful, this will be the first result of its kind in South Africa for wheat, which has a very complex genome.
Apart from the value of having the actual gene sequence, the knowledge transfer in advanced genomics approaches to South African scientists will be invaluable. Similarly, CenGen strives to establish a basic foundation of bioinformatics knowledge, and a sound understanding of how to implement bioinformatics tools in agri-research, within South Africa.
