Respect is a hot topic among educators today. There seems to be a lack of respect in school and at home.

Anytime I draw your attention to a problem, I want to also bring to our attention a solution.

In order to create greater respect in our schools we need to do 2 things:

1: First we need to give ourselves respect. Show yourself admiration and due regard for your abilities, qualities, and achievements.

2: Speak and Act Respectful to others.

Sounds simple right? Simple yes, but easy no. This approach will take time and patience just like anything we are trying to create.

However, it is the only lasting solution. We must show respect for ourselves and others if we want to see greater respect from those we teach.

This week your challenge is to strive to show yourself and others more respect.

I learned a new concept this past week from the book "From Burnout to Purpose" by Gina Calvano.

In the beginning of the book she tells of her own story of burn out.  She says, "Measuring with my Faith Spectrum, I was living so far over into fear (believing something bad could happen) versus hope (believing something good could happen) that I thought I could never connect to what mattered to me.

Where are you on your own Faith Spectrum?  Does the idea of creating a life you love excite you or scare you?  Do you even believe it is possible?

If you want to create a life you love, the key lies in intentional thinking.

What can you intentional think today that will lead to feelings and actions that will give you a happy life?

My oldest daughter was a very difficult toddler.  We determined whether it was a good or bad day by her emotions.  To help her, my mom began saying to her, "you determine your own happiness."  It was beautiful empowering thought, and yet I look back now and realize that she probably didn't know how to apply that advice.

Do you know how to be happy?  Do you even know what happiness looks like for you?

If you don't know how to create a happy life then how can you do it.

Today I want you to ask yourself, what do I want?  What will make me happy?

Are you singing the Burnt Out Blues?  What does it mean to be burnt out?

In the Henry Ford Health Blog, we learn

"Burnout is not the same as stress," says Lisa MacLean, M.D., a psychiatrist at Henry Ford Health. "Instead, it's a trifecta of work-related symptoms where you feel a loss of enthusiasm – you don't feel excitement about your work, you feel exhausted by your work, and even more importantly, you feel that the work you're doing doesn't matter."

Does this sound familiar to you?

In her book "From BurnOut to Purpose," Gina Calvano describes being burnt out early in her career.  She recognizes fear being a driving force in her experience and not know what she wanted, but knowing she feared, "Losing my job, losing favor with my boss and peers, losing anyone's confidence in me, and not having enough money to support myself."

She says,
"I felt guilty for wanting "more" from life and for not knowing what "more" looked like."

I want you to ask yourself if you are burnt out.  AND I want you to give yourself to sit in the emotion of what that feels like to you.  Becoming aware that you are in fact burnt out is the first step.  Tomorrow we will look at how to begin creating something different in your life.

When I began my teaching career, I worried over and over again about getting fired.  The thought, "I hope they don't fire me today" plagued my thoughts everyday.  I wish I had known the principles I teach my clients then.  I wish I had been aware of how detrimental this thought was at the time.  I was feeling inadequate, scared, lonely, frustrated, and exhausted.  Focusing on this thought left me always feeling like an imposter in my position.

The crazy thing is nothing my principal or colleagues did supported this thought.  Because of one 2 sentence saying from my superintendent, I began punishing myself over and over with my thought.  I never interacted with this Superintendent personally again.  And yet, I didn't allow myself to believe all the praise I was getting from my Principal and co teachers because of my own thoughts.

Life Coaching has helped me learn how to be aware of my thoughts, question their validity, choose thoughts that will serve me best, and then practice those thoughts.

In his book "Why We Sleep," Matthew Walker states, ""Scientists have discovered a revolutionary new treatment that makes you live longer. It enhances your memory and makes you more creative. It makes you look more attractive. It keeps you slim and lowers food cravings. It protects you from cancer and dementia. It wards off colds and the flu. It lowers your risk of heart attacks and strokes, not to mention diabetes. You’ll even feel happier, less depressed, and less anxious. Are you interested? While it may sound hyperbolic, nothing about this fictitious advertisement would be inaccurate. If this were a drug, many people will be disbelieving. Those who were convinced would pay large sums of money for even the smallest dose. Should clinical trials back up the claims, share prices of the pharmaceutical company that invented the drug would skyrocket. Of course, the ad is not describing some miracle new tincture or a cure-all wonder drug, but rather the proven benefits of a full night of sleep. The evidence supporting these claims have been documented in more than 17,000 well-scrutinized and scientific reports to date. As for the prescription cost, well, there isn’t one. It’s free. Yet all too often, we shun the nightly invitations to receive our full dose of this all natural remedy–with terrible consequences. Failed by the lack of public education, most of us do not realize how remarkable a panacea sleep truly is.”

In this episode we look at the Fundamental of Sleep and how it can impact our daily success and happiness. I invite you to consider what story you are telling yourself surrounding sleep and become aware of the results it is getting you.

Isn't it interesting how you are speaking to yourself about sleep?

I was constantly telling myself it was "my time" late at night. I would settle in with a bowl of ice cream and a favorite netflix episode after the kids had gone to bed. But I was also exhausted the next day at school! I had to fight to keep my eyes open and even dozed off a couple times while teaching reading groups. When I changed my story and began to seek sleep and looked at it as a necessary part of my wellness, things really changed for me.

So this week, look at the story you are telling yourself about sleep and ask yourself if you like the results you are getting from that story.

If you are interested in working with me on this and other Patterns of Thought and Behavior, I would love to have you join our Patterns of Success 12 week program. Visit our website at www.createsimplycoaching.com for more information.

Have you heard the phrase, "You don't have to eat an elephant all at once."  This is the image I want you to remember as we discuss today how to beat overwhelm when facing a big goal or project deadline.  A few years back I was getting back into running after taking a break for health reasons.  I wanted to run an 18 mile trail run, but I had no idea if it was even possible for my physically.  I started training and increased my running minutes by just a few seconds each day.  I repeated this small simple effort over and over again until I was able to run 23 miles without stopping.  This is how we eat an elephant.  Little by little, bite by bite.  When faced with a large task that feels overwhelming, break it down into small tasks and then repeat the simple steps over and over.  You will love how simple it is to create amazing results!

Tip for today is to develop one new thought pattern you want and repeat it over and over again.  You will be amazed at how quickly your brain attaches to a pattern.

This week we have learned the difference between facts and thoughts.  We have learned that our thoughts create our feelings and we have considered how we want to feel.  Today's tip is to "Talk to your brain more than you listen to it."  I want you to be intentional about how you speak to yourself.  As you do, you brain will see this as relevant and go to work finding evidence to support that thought you just spoke to it.

View Details

When looking to change how we feel, it is important to work backwards.  Look at how you are seeing the world.  Look at how you are speaking to yourself.  Your brain is wired to protect you and keep you from harm.  It will look bring to your attention things it sees are relevant to your survival.  But unlike the cave man days, most of the things are brain thinks it needs to protect us from will not threaten our survival.  But they might make us uncomfortable and our brain does not know the difference between being in danger and being uncomfortable.  So one way to not feel scared, anxious, or overwhelmed is to answer our brain.  Figure out why we are feeling this way, what thoughts are we having and then answer them.  Once you have given your brain an answer, it will calm the feelings of worry, fear, anxiety.

View Details

Our thoughts create our feelings.  What we see and say creates how we feel.  So today I invite you to ask yourself, "How do I want to feel?"

Then we can get curious about the thoughts you are having and see if those thoughts are moving you to feel how you desire.

Today we discuss a fact vs. opinion.  This is the basis for why I love coaching and have decided to be a school life coach.  Did you know that through what you see around you and say to yourself you have the power to create what you feel and do.  The Power lies within your thoughts.  Marcus Areleis said, "Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective not the truth."  While subbing in 3rd grade yesterday, my students were learning about Fact vs. Opinion in writing.  When discussing a fact they said, "You are awesome!" to me.  Of course that was so nice to hear, but asked them, "Is that a fact?"  They said, "YES!!  That is a fact". I then told them about my subbing in Jr. High the week prior where I had a hard time controlling the class of 34 gym students.  They ended up running laps at the end and they definitely did not think I was awesome!   So we were able to see that it is not a fact.  A fact has to be able to be proven and agreed upon by everyone.  So often we are sure our thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are fact.  However, when we get clear about the difference between a fact and an opinion, we can use this to help our brains create the results we want in life.

"Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be."  The 4 steps of the Law of Creation--SEE, SAY, FEEL, DO all lead us to the final step BECOME!  Who do you want to become?  What type of teacher do you want to be?  Are you willing to be uncomfortable in order to achieve success?  Are you willing to SEE the world differently and Speak differently so you can feel and do things differently?  Working with a coach requires money, time, and commitment.  But the biggest challenge you have to overcome is your fear of the uncomfortable.  Change can be painful at first.  Do you have the courage to become what you desire to be?

View Details

Once we have worked on SEEing, SAYing, and Feeling; now we have to being the Doing.  Nike penned it well, "Just Do It".  At the end of the day, if we stop at the saying and feeling and never get to the doing then change won't happen.  In his book "The Compound Effect," Darren Hardy reminds us how little daily actions add up to create big results.  So what is one small thing you will DO today that will begin to create what you desire?

Is it possible to choose how we feel?  Our thoughts truly do create our feelings.  Imagine with me that a lion is approaching you, he is getting closer and is starring you down.  However, you feel fine.  Pretty soon that lion is right in front of you, so close you could reach out and touch him.  You remain calm and unaffected.  WHY??  You are at the zoo of course and the large heave glass is protecting you.  Your brain knows this so your thoughts stay in fascination, calm, and tranquillity.  But what if you were in Africa and a lion began to approach you.  Would you feel the same?  Our Thoughts create the context which determine our feelings.  So if you want to feel different, get curious about your thoughts and start thinking different.

The Law of Creation is a framework to help explain how we create everything in our life.  We create everything around us by what we "SEE, SAY, FEEL, and Do."  Those 4 things work together to then create what we will become.  Abraham Lincoln said, "The best way to predict the future is to create it."  By understanding the law of creation and applying that law intentionally through patterns each day, we can create the success we desire.  In coming episodes we will go into each of the areas in the Law of Creation.

What do you REALLY want?  I have tried to give up sugar completely over a dozen times.  After failing over a dozen times, I have finally given into the fact that I don't REALLY want to give up sugar.  If I did, I would have done it already.  So I have had to get very clear about what it is that I want and tailor patterns of success to match that desire.

Sometimes we beat ourselves up because we can't achieve a specific goal, but is it REALLY what we want?

Odds for success are much higher when we know our why, when we get crystal clear about what it is we want.

When a student is learning something new, it is important to keep things simple and build upon simple foundations.  When teaching 5 year olds to read, we spent months working on letter recognition and sounds.  It was simple concepts, but slowly over time we added a little bit more and by the end of the year those amazing 5 year olds were reading!

The same concept applies to all ages.  When you are learning something new or creating a new pattern for success, it is imperative to keep it simple.  You are a student of this new pattern and keeping it simple will be the quickest path to success.

So Keep it Simple Student.
