The program is designed where students meet once a month for a weekend in a cohort, the program takes two years to complete and you learn in your area with educators from your area! This week, we have Michael Van Keulen, Associate Director of Student Success, to talk about getting ahead through SMSU! Michael touches on how SMSU encourages the 15-credit-per-semester model so that undergraduate students graduate within the 4-year window while not feeling overworked with a heavy class schedule!

The other way SMSU helps students get ahead or catch up is through our summer courses, which are almost completely online! If you are interested, check out our summer courses at www.smsu.edu/go/summer and work with the SMSU Admissions team to get enrolled and get ahead this summer!

This week returning guest Dr. Daniel Rieppel joins us to highlight the Schubert Festival performance that runs from April 23rd-26th with Thursday’s performance taking place at the Campus Religious Center at 7:30 pm, Fridays performance also taking place at the CRC starting at 6:30 pm, Saturday’s performance is a round table discussion running from 2-4 pm at the CRC and Sunday the Festival wraps up with Grand Finale Festival Concert in the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church at 4:00 pm with Tickets costing: Adult: $12; Students: $5; Families of 3 or more: $25.

The performances Thursday-Saturday are free and open to the public! Dr. Rieppel goes through the thought process behind his selection of the pieces and what they mean personally, and their historical impact! Our second guest this week is Dr. Heather Moreland, Professor of Mathematics, talking about the 2nd annual STEM Symposium. The day will feature keynote speaker: Dr. Dequina Angelina Nicholas. The Symposium will take place on April 22nd, 2026, in the Upper Conference Center, starting at 6 pm, and is free and open to the public!

This week, we dive into the world of theatre with the Professor of Theatre and director of SMSU’s spring mainstage production, Tartuffe—joined by Peder, a lead actor in the show and an Entertainment and Theatre Arts major. Together, they share how Tartuffe was selected for the season, what it’s like bringing a classic comedy to life, and what students can expect from the Entertainment and Theatre Arts program at SMSU.

Come laugh, learn, and experience the magic of live theatre!

Southwest Minnesota State University will welcome author and survivor advocate Danielle Leukam to campus on Tuesday, March 31, at 7 p.m. in Bellows Academic 102 for a public presentation titled “Take Back Your Power: My Experience, My Message.”

Leukam is a nationally recognized speaker, author, and advocate whose work centers on healing, resilience, and empowerment for survivors of trauma. Drawing from lived experience, Leukam shares a powerful message about reclaiming personal strength and creating change through honesty, courage, and connection.

The event is sponsored by the SMSU Social Science Department and is free and open to the public.

The Mustang Market Coordinator, Joyce Robinson, discusses how the Mustang Market came to be on campus and the purpose it serves. Mustang Market is SMSU’s permanent food and resource pantry, located in Bellows Academic 154. The market is open on Thursdays from noon to 7 pm. All food and supplies are free to our on- and off-campus community for those seeking the resources we offer.

Assistant Professor Jessica Hennen previews the creative writing’s Visiting Writers Series with Jennifer Eli Bowen and Michael Kleber-Diggs.

Along with the Visiting Writers Series event, the Fine Arts Roundup and the Fine Arts Celebration will feature students majoring in English who will showcase their work.

The 11th president of Southwest Minnesota State University is Dr. David Jones! Dr. Jones has devoted his career to education, including over three decades of experience in higher education both in the classroom and leadership roles.

He has a proven record of developing innovative enrollment management strategies leading to enrollment growth and strong retention numbers as well as a commitment to, and experience with, shared governance.

Sonya and Kala go through what the process was like going through getting the SMSU School of Education seven year accreditation. Make sure to check out the SMSU School of Education if you are interested in becoming a teacher!

Director of Natasha Boe discusses the importance of financial aid and where to start.

Natasha goes through the different opportunities for grants and scholarships that provide free aid you don’t have to pay back.

This week, we have Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs Devin Gorter to talk about the Gold Rush Raffle

The Mustang Gold Rush Raffle is the Mustang Club's largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is THE event to be at on SMSU's campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle and are $100 per person, which includes entry into the event and into the reverse raffle.

Southwest Minnesota State University welcomed acclaimed author and cultural preservationist Dr. Anton Treuer (pronounced troy-er) to campus on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, for programming on Native American heritage and dialogue on race and culture.

Dr. Anton Treuer is Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University and author of many books. He is building an Ojibwe teacher training program at Bemidji State University, and his equity, education, and cultural work have put him on a path of service around the nation and the world.

Dr. Treuer, author of the widely praised book Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask, shared insights from his work and his lifelong commitment to preserving the Ojibwe language

This week, Kelly Loft joins the show to go over all of the fun activities that are happening on campus during Tropical Night weekend, including the Hall of Honor Inductees, going over the inductees and their allocations during their time at SMSU, and where they’re at now!

Kelly also goes over what is going on this weekend, which includes both the men’s and women’s basketball games on Friday and Saturday. The women’s swimming and diving, and wrestling on Friday! The SMSU Alumni Foundation will have a social right before the basketball games on Saturday in the RA Facility!

This week, we cover all of the events and opportunities that The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at SMSU is hosting in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This year’s theme is “Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way” and features educational and volunteer opportunities to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Events include the Vernon Jordan Documentary Screening (in-person) on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at 12:00-1:15pm in CH104. Free and open to all. No registration required.

The “I Have a Dream” Reflection room is in SC 235 and is available from January 12-23, Monday - Friday from 9:00am-5:00pm. Visitors are welcome to stop in and reflect as frequently as they like. Faculty are encouraged to bring their classes to the space.

Our very own Julie Walker has been awarded the, McKnight Heart of Community Honor! The honor celebrates people who are the pulse of Minnesota’s caring and connected communities. It is named for Virginia McKnight Binger, the Foundation’s first board chair and the daughter of McKnight’s founders, William and Maude McKnight.

Julie Walker is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies program, Assistant Director of Forensics (Speech and Debate Team), Director of the LGBTQ+ Center and Women’s Center, and founder of the Online Asynchronous (Speech) Tournament Series, for which she was named the winner of the Larry Schnoor District IV Distinguished Service Award for contributions to the American Forensics Association in 2023.

Applying for college can be difficult for families. Charlotte Wahle breaks down what families and you, as a student, should be doing at this point in the year. The week kicks off on Monday, November, 17th with an International Potluck starting at 4 PM and Tuesday through Thursday each night a student has put together a presentation representing their home country, Nepal: Tuesday, November 18 at 4:00 PM, Malawi: Wednesday, November 19 at 4:00 PM, Jamaica: Thursday, November 20 at 4:00 PM, Mali: Thursday, November 20 at 4:30 PM and the final night of the event will be the International Gala running from 6-11 PM and tickets are $20 or $150 for a whole table!

Wesley also discusses his experience studying abroad in Taiwan and how students can experience studying abroad through SMSU.

In this episode, Tony Nubile, SMSU’s Director of Facilities, drops by to chat about the recent floor repairs in the RA Facility. He shares what sparked the project, how the team approached it, and what goes into maintaining campus spaces as safe and functional as possible. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of work most people don’t see—but definitely benefit from.

Tony also discusses how the Facilities crew works around student schedules to complete tasks with minimal disruption. It’s a great reminder of the care that goes into maintaining the spaces we all use every day.

The SMSU Creative Writing and English Program hosts prominent authors on campus as part of its ongoing Visiting Writers Series. This semester, SMSU is proud to welcome Heid E. Erdrich for a public reading on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 7:00 pm in Charter Hall 201. Erdrich is the author of nine books of poetry and prose as well as a teacher and curator.

Her reading is the first installment of the visiting writer series for the 2025-26 academic year. The series is coordinated by Jessie Hennen, Director of Creative Writing and Literature at SMSU. The reading is free and open to the public.

This week, we have Ashton Ayres, Assistant Director of the Student Center at Southwest Minnesota State University, join us to talk about Family Weekend and other exciting campus events. Ashton highlights the variety of activities planned for students and their families, including:

Athletic events like football, volleyball, and soccer games.

This week we have Nadine Purvis Schmidt, SMSU Theatre Professor, to talk about her performance during her sabbatical this semester! The show is titled “Apples in Winter“, written by Jennifer Faucet, and is a single performer show, and Nadine goes over what all goes into preparing for a one performer show. The show is free admission with a free-will donation and will be performed on September 24th and 25th at 7:30 pm in the SMSU Black Box Theatre. The SMSU Theatre Program has changed its name to the Entertainment & Theatre Arts Program, and Nadine goes over what went into that name change!

This week, we have Hannah Abel joining us to cover a few of the events happening on campus that the community should definitely be aware of!

First, we discuss the incredible opportunity presented by the Women’s Leadership Conference and its impressive lineup of speakers. The conference will be held on September 18, 2025, starting at 8:00 a.m. If any SMSU students are interested in attending, the sign-up fee is waived, and you’ll also get a free lunch and great networking opportunities!

Gold College also kicks off September 10, 2025, so make sure you take the opportunity to expand your knowledge by signing up for classes in a wide variety of disciplines! Also, don’t forget to come out and cheer on the Mustangs in their home opener during the 19th Annual Ag-bowl on September 6, 2025

This week, we introduce SMSU’s Interim President, Dr. David Jones, who brings 14 years of experience from Minnesota State University and looks to continue the success that SMSU has had over the past few years in enrollment. Dr. Jones reviews his journey that has led him to SMSU and what he and his family are excited about in Marshall, Minnesota.

This week, President Kumara Jayasuriya has served as Southwest Minnesota State University’s president for six years, starting in 2019. We discussed his successes at SMSU with him and what he will miss most. He will retire after the 2025 spring commencement. President Jayasuriya will be greatly missed here on campus as he helped grow SMSU during his tenure.

This week, we have Alyssa Miessner, Assistant Director of Development, on to talk about the Fourth Annual M4L Day of Giving. The event is to call upon the Mustang Family to support current Mustangs in a variety of different ways! There are timed challenges, matching goals, and so many other opportunities to support SMSU!

This week, the first STEM Symposium will be taking place on campus, featuring keynote speaker Dr. Trachette Jackson, Associate Vice President for Research, DEI Initiatives, and University Diversity and Social Transformation at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The topic of her keynote is “Mobilizing Mathematics”.

The Natural History Museum is located in the Science and Math building on SMSU's campus. The Museum recently underwent a facelift with the help of both Katie and Alyssa, who gathered funding and helped see the completion of the new Natural History Museum.

The Museum has many more interactive spaces and engaging displays that you won't be able to keep your eyes off—ranging from usable microscopes to a small lake with catchable paper fish and a mural featuring actual-sized prairie animals. Make sure to stop by and check out the excellent new space!

The English department puts on the creative writing series to showcase what students can do once they earn their degree at SMSU. Nick Northrup, aka Crowfather, is this year’s featured guest.

Nick and Jesse go over how SMSU can help students make a career with a creative writing degree, along with Nick’s journey at SMSU and how his experiences here have helped him get to where he is today!

Throughout April, SMSU hosts events featuring many of our different programs, including English, Music, Theatre, and more! Each area on campus has different events to highlight the work students do!

This week we get a preview of this spring's Theatre performance, “SHOUT The MOD Musical”. Sheila and Olivia go through the process of what it takes to get a musical up and running, talking about everything from costumes to stage direction and choreography!

This week, we walk through the different concerts that will be put on with Dr. Daniel Rieppel and the Music Department as a whole! We also go over some work that Dr. Rieppel has been working on with the Bill Holmes Documentary

This week, we go over questions you might have about the FAFSA and what you’ll need to do in preparing for college! We also discuss other options besides just filling out the FAFSA.

This week, Housing sign-up has opened for on-campus residents starting on the 25th with Juniors and moving down through future students. Jerry goes over everything students need to know and may have questions about when it comes to living on campus and how many opportunities students have to save money while living on campus through the opt-on advantage plan!

This week, SMSU has brought back one of our alumni, Cassie Williams ‘07/’16, for a poetry reading on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 6:30 in the Whipple Gallery on campus! Cassie’s writing covers all aspects of her life, from her work advocating for marginalized groups to her life as a woman of color and mother to five children. Michele spoke about her work in Access Opportunity Success and supporting students during their SMSU journey. SMSU will also host Dr. Michael V. Walker ‘98 on Thursday, Feb. 27, from 4:30-6 pm in the Lower Conference Center!

This week, Broadcasting & Digital Media Majors Seely Stockmoe and Landon Kruse join the show to highlight the Mustang Blueprint Podcast, a student-run podcast highlighting self-improvement, college life, and entrepreneurial opportunities in the local area! Seely and Landon talk about how the podcast came to be, along with their involvement and passion for creating content and bettering themselves as college students. This Saturday is Tropical Night, and activities are happening all day. Athletics will start the day with their hall of honor event at 10:30 a.m. The Alumni Association will host a social event in the RA Facility starting at 3:30 p.m. and continuing through the basketball games. Anyone is welcome to enjoy the Mustang Ale! The Women's game begins at 5, and the Men's game will follow at 7!

The Ag Bowl Scholarship Invites over 1,500 high school students from across multiple different states in the Midwest, including Wisconsin! The students start the day off bright and early with an introduction to the university in the RA facility and spend the entire day competing in a wide range of FFA competitions! In addition to their competitions, students also compete for scholarships to attend SMSU!

With the start of the spring semester, future college students begin to feel the pressure of applying for scholarships, writing college admission essays, and trying to navigate filling out the Fasfa. This week, Taylor McKittrick goes over why, when looking at SMSU, none of that worries students or their families. Taylor goes over what students should have ready to go by this point in the admission process and how SMSU is here to help with not only filling out scholarships (SMSU does a mass application for all scholarships). The Admissions Team has some significant events coming up, including Winter Discover Day and Southwest Scholars Day, both providing excellent opportunities for future Mustangs!

This week, Charlotte Wahle joins us to discuss the college admissions process and what you need to know as a parent! We also discuss why you might want to consider SMSU, with its great scholarship opportunities, small class size, and affordable tuition prices!

This week, Dr. John Ginocchio joins us to discuss the many concerts SMSU is involved in during this holiday season! The activities start as early as December 3rd with the SMO Holiday Cheer concert. The Festivities will start right before finals week with the annual Tuba Christmas Concert on December 14th.

This week, Associate Professor of Exercise Science Mostafa Hegazy will join us to discuss this year's Undergraduate Research Conference, which will be held on December 4th.

This will be the university's 19th conference, and it provides students with the opportunity to showcase their impact on the world.

This week, Assistant Athletic Director Kelly Loft joins to discuss the wrapping up of the fall sports season for the Mustangs and the kickoff for the winter season.

This week, Director of Bands and Professor of Music John Ginocchio prepares for guest artist Tom Scott, who will perform with the SMSU Jazz Ensemble and area high schools. This activity is funded with a grant from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council, made possible by an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State's general fund.

Tom will perform with SMSU's jazz ensemble on Monday, November 18. Then, on Tuesday, November 19, Tom Scott and SMSU will join Redwood Falls High School in their fall concert. Both Concerts are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. These events are free and open to the public!

This week, Director of the SMSU Center for Civic and Community Engagement Melissa Scholten, along with Student Election Engagement Fellows Ashton Ayres and Mary Newton, recap how successful the Mustangs Vote Initiative was along with the ups and downs they dealt with leading up to Tuesday's election. The initiative was created to inform SMSU students about the importance of going out to vote and the process involved once they get to the polls.

This week, Assistant Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Dr. Erin Kline discusses the importance of the First Generation student population across the nation and what SMSU does on its campus to make those students feel welcomed and part of a community that they are new to and have no idea how to navigate.

This week, Professor of Theatre Nadine Purvis Schmidt and Bryn Mongeau, a double major in Theatre Arts and Music, hop in the booth to discuss the upcoming performance, "46 Plays for America's First Ladies.” The production will be held October 30-November 3, 2024. Tickets are $10 and available only at the door, but admission is free for SMSU students and employees with their ID, and tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis. The show has mini-productions highlighting each First Lady in various theatre styles.

This week, we go over Kevin’s visit to campus on the 16th of September. Kevin is the first of many renowned authors that the SMSU English Department is bringing to campus as a part of the visiting writing series! Kevin has published his works in venues such as The New Yorker, The Georgia Review, McSweeny’s, and many others. His reading will take place Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, in Charter Hall 201 at 7:00 p.m. Make sure to listen to the end for a special surprise by Brockmeier.

This week, we will cover all the activities with Ag Bowl starting on Saturday, with pedal pulls and a petting zoo out in the tailgating lot from 3-5 pm, with the home opener for the Mustangs Football team following those events. The theatre department has also been busy. With the 50th anniversary of Watergate events, the program is putting on a stage reading of those events on Monday, September 9th at 7:30 pm in the Fine Arts Theatre. Sheila also touches on her time in Scotland during her sabbatical last spring, learning the art of kilt-making and its history and culture.

This week, Angela Lee joins us to discuss the upcoming Women’s Leadership Conference presented by the SMSU Alumni Association. The event focuses on the theme, “Lead Where You Are.”

The day is packed with professional development that enforces this theme, networking opportunities, and three speakers. Julia Walfoort graduated from SMSU in 2016 and works at Stackline as an Associate Director. Lori Dubbledee is a '00/’11 graduate and is the VP of Finance at Schwan’s Consumer Brands. The event keynote speaker is Sherri Coale, who was the University of Oklahoma head women’s basketball coach for 25 years, with 19 straight NCAA tournament appearances, and competed in 3 Final Fours.

This week the computer science student’s have been busy this year putting together an app that they call, Calbuddy, short for “Calendar Buddy”. It allows students to fill out what type of events they would like to be notified about, it can also work for class notifications through the work they did with the SMSU IT department.

This week, Tayyaba Rahman is in the studio discussing her upcoming event, the Future Forward Speaker Series, presented by North Star Mutual School of Business. Tayyaba comes from Pakistan and is pursuing her Master of Business Administration at SMSU.

Next week, the SMSU Theatre Program presents “An Inspector Calls.” Director Nadine Schmidt chose this show because it's a classic detective story that fits this year's theme: Timeless and Timeliness.

Senior Theatre Major Colton Jensen plays Eric Birling, a member of the family called on by Inspector Goole. Colton touches on how he prepared for the role, as well as handling lighting design using new lighting equipment the program received last fall.

The show runs April 10-14, starting at 7:30 pm, with a matinee showing on April 14, beginning at 2 pm. All performances will take place in the Fine Arts Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the door. SMSU students and employees can attend for free with their SMSU ID.

This Week, Dr. Ken Murphy joins us to discuss the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. In preparation for that, the planetarium at SMSU is putting on a show this weekend. Tickets are sold at the door for five dollars, and SMSU students get free admission.

Dr. Murphy discusses the significance of this solar eclipse and provides “need to know” information to stay safe and enjoy this amazing scientific event!

The show times are March 29 and April 4, both at 7 p.m., at the SMSU planetarium. After the show, if you don’t have the proper eye protection, glasses are available for purchase for four dollars.

We’re back after Spring break with SMSU Student Body President Sam Lund. Sam goes over his journey at SMSU, recapping what led him to choose SMSU, how he dealt with online learning through the pandemic, and how important it is to be involved on campus.

Sam also goes over what he’s been up to the past few weeks and the great opportunities that have come his way due to his work in student government and his large involvement on campus.

This week we call up SMSU alumni Wokil Bam who earned a degree in environmental science and chemistry and a minor in biology from SMSU in 2012.

Since then he’s been busy studying and researching earning his master's from LSU in 2015 and his Phd in 2021. Since June 2023, Wokil has worked with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) as a postdoctoral investigator, geochemist, radiochemist, and chemical oceanographer.

Over the past few months, Wokil has been on a research voyage to Antarctica and New Zealand.

This won’t be his first research cruise, in total Wokil has spent over 300 days at sea doing research over the past two-and-a-half years.

On this week’s episode, Dr. Rieppel lets us in on a “grand” update for the music department at SMSU. This past fall the department gained possession of a baby grand piano through funding from the SMSU Foundation.

On February 12, The Southwest Minnesota State University Music Program presents “Pairs and Doublings” a dedication recital for the new baby grand piano featuring Dr. Daniel Rieppel. The recital is set for Monday, February 12, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre at SMSU.

SMSU will host the 12th annual Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational this week. The event is spearheaded by the SMSU Ag Club, with Hannah Myers and Madison Douvier coordinating the day's events.

On Friday over 1,300 high school FFA students will compete in a wide variety of FFA competitions, along with a chance to receive scholarships from SMSU.

With Tropical Night taking place Angela Lee, Director of Alumni Relations and Outreach, is on to talk about what is happening for the Alumni returning to campus.

We kick off the new year by discussing the Mustang Pathway Program with Jeet Sausen, Associate Director of the program. She talked about how the program started and the success it has generated for SMSU.

The Mustang Pathway is the only program of its kind in the state, across both public and private higher education. The program serves historically underprivileged students and provides an alternate entry through a five-week summer program. Students who successfully complete the program are automatically admitted in the fall semester at SMSU.

Dr. Erin Kline and Jefferson Lee IV spearheaded the program in 2019 with the full backing of President Kumara Jayasuriya. Sixty-one students have completed MPP with 63% of those students going on to enroll in spring classes.

On this week’s episode, the Director of Bands at SMSU, John Ginocchio, gives us an update on the upcoming schedule of music events heading into winter break. Charlotte Wahle, director of admissions, was our guest for the KMHL Campus Update on these week's episode. Wahle, spoke to us about new programs that can help students with tuition costs for those who qualify. She also discussed the Southwest Guarantee, the North Star Promise Scholarship, and other SMSU scholarships available for current and new students. Theatre Professor and director, Sheila Tabaka, and student actor for the role of Jo March, Bryn Mongeau, give us an overview of the play Little Women.

On today's episode, Meredith Swan, SMSU Foundation Director of Annual Giving, talked about the upcoming M4L (Mustangs for Life) Day of Giving on Thursday 27, 2023. M4L Day (Mustangs 4 Life Day) will bring together alumni, friends, students, parents, faculty, and staff for Southwest Minnesota State University's Second Annual Day of Giving. This is a 24-hour online fundraising event full of opportunities to show Mustang Pride for all areas on campus. Gifts made online will unlock bonuses to supported funds based on the all-day, hourly, and time-sensitive challenges. Every gift, large or small, is considered in the bonuses and challenges held throughout the day.

This year there are over $10,000 in challenges and special incentives available to those who volunteer to be an ambassador. For those choosing to support by donating or by sharing the social media posts to help spread the word will make an impact on SMSU students today and in the future! The goal this year is $60,000 raised and 500 donors, doubling last year’s impact!

A special M4L Day Celebration will be held in the SMSU Student Center Upper Level from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on April 27. The celebration includes a social with free appetizers, winners announcements, and the opportunity to win prizes for those in attendance.

WorldFest coordinating team members Dr. Eric Doise and Dr. Mary Ellen Daniloff-Merril give us a preview of what we can expect at the 2023 WorldFest and a little history and recap of previous WorldFest celebrations.

"WorldFest is an educational and cultural event helping to build appreciation, respect, and a greater understanding of cultural differences.

Equally as important, we want to create a more inclusive and welcoming community for all at SMSU and in the wider Marshall area."

The 2023 WorldFest has three major sections: The World Cuisine, The World Cultures Expo, and the World Stage. The World Cuisine introduces us to the tastes and flavors from around the world and our own backyard. The World Cultures Expo features SMSU students and community members sharing information about their respective home countries and cultures. The area also features several hands-on activities. Thirty informational booths will be available this year. Finally, The World Stage will showcase 17 different talents from SMSU, the local community, professional artists, and performance groups representing international and diverse cultures in southwest Minnesota.

SMSU Professor of Music John Ginocchio and Jazz music legend Tom "Bones" Malone give us an update on what we can expect in their combined concert with SMSU Jazz Ensemble. Tom "Bones" Malone gives us an inside look into his career as a musician working with The Blues Brothers, David Letterman Show, and Saturday Night Live. Tom has played thousands of times on television and has given live performances, even worked with music legends like Ray Charles, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Gil Evans, Yes, Miles Davis, Beck, Aretha Franklin, Spyro Gyra, Jimmy Cliff, and Frank Zappa, to name a few.

Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, Julie Walker, alongside SMSU Senior Morgan Hughes, recaps their experience attending one of SMSU's study abroad programs in San Salvador, Bahamas.

SMSU students registered in SMSU Marine & Island Ecology in the Bahamas (GLBL 499/499L) with Drs. Alyssa Anderson and Shelby Flint. Students registered during the Fall semester for this study abroad program, which took place during spring break, paying a $3,000 program fee, plus regular tuition and fees. Three Faculty members and nine SMSU students from various backgrounds formed this incredible group to do different activities, including research, exploring new spaces in the ocean and caves, snorkeling, along with many more exciting experiences.

SMSU Forensics/Speech Team Member, Jenna Zeug, and Associate Professor of Communications, Benjamin Walker, gives us an update on SMSU's Forensics Team and its most recent trip to Mankato for the annual Minnesota State Speech and Debate championship.

SMSU Forensics Team members won many accolades with Jenna Zeug being 4th in the After Dinner Speaking, 4th in Dramatic Interpretation, and was the Minnesota State Champion in Informative Speaking. Zeug was also named to the Minnesota All-State Team. Team members Nedoh Gyi and Lexi Weber were also finalists, taking 3rd place in Duo Interpretation.

The SMSU Forensic Team provides students with an opportunity to expand and develop critical thinking, presentation, research, interpretation, leadership and social skills. The activity is open to all students enrolled at the university regardless of major or previous experience.

The team attends approximately twenty intercollegiate competitions throughout the academic year from late September through April. In addition, the team hosts two high school tournaments (one in March and the other in April) each year. High School speech workshops, activity fairs, showcase performances, and other student activities have also been part of the team’s activities.

The Forensics Team wraps up their regular season competition and will be competing at the Asynchronous Speech Championship, March 22-25 and the National Forensic Association Championship, April 13-15 at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.

Regional Consumer Banking Director and Member of the Steering Committee for SMSU's Foundation Women's Leadership Conference, Cindy Verschaetse, gives us a preview on this year's Women's Leadership Conference. The conference theme is "Flourish, Grow, and Lead", with guest keynote speaker, Jennifer Fauz, an equipment and finance industry veteran. Jennifer is an experienced sales leader with demonstrated success in the financial services industry. The conference also hosts different guest speakers during the day.

This year's conference was first schedule for March 16, 2023; however, due to weather, the conference was postponed to October 25, 2023.

Director of Bands and Professor of Music, John Ginocchio, gives us a preview on the SMSU Ensemble upcoming concert and tour. The SMSU Jazz Ensemble with guest artist, Tom "Bones" Malone with the Worthington High School Jazz Band will perform at the Memorial Auditorium in Worthington, MN at 7:00pm on March 27, 2023, and at 7:30pm at SMSU Fine Arts Theatre on March 28.

The SMSU Ensemble will also perform at our Spring Concert featuring new works and several favorites of the year on April 17, 2023.

The SMSU Jazz Ensemble performs a variety of standard and new jazz works of all difficulty levels and styles. Emphasis is placed on the authentic performance of this truly American style of music and enhancing technical and theoretical skills associated with playing this music.

As part of the SMSU Band's Guest Artist Series the Jazz Ensemble hosts and performs with guest jazz performers from around the country. Recent guest-clinicians have included:

Director of the TRIO Upward Bound Program, Amy Nemitz, gives us an update on SMSU's Upward Bound Program grant awards totaling nearly $3M from the Department of Education, and the program's ultimate goal: to get High school students into college, either a 2-year or 4-year school.

The Mission of Southwest Minnesota State University's Upward Bound Program is to increase the college entrance and completion rates among our community's youth & inspire them to become responsible community leaders & contributors. Our program seeks to achieve this by instilling academic skills, motivation, and college readiness in our program participants. We will focus on the importance of "five wells". SMSU's Upward Bound students will be WELL read, WELL spoken, WELL traveled, WELL dressed, and WELL balanced!

TRIO Upward Bound is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of TRIO Upward Bound is to provide participants with college preparation and opportunities that will enhance their ability to succeed in their higher education endeavors. The Upward Bound Program of SMSU serves Marshall High School, Yellow Medicine East High School, and Worthington High School grades 9-12. Participants in the Upward Bound program receive academic tutoring in all core subject areas from math and science to English and literature, as well as, additional opportunities to take part in college visits, environmental learning, cultural enrichment, and career exploration. In the summer, Upward Bound offers a 6-week program at SMSU where students take part in summer classes Monday-Friday and have planned trips to colleges, museums, environmental centers, and other destinations that offer educational and cultural experiences to broaden their understanding of the world they live in.

Upward Bound strives to assist underrepresented students in postsecondary education and offer them positive academic and cultural experiences that encourage the continuation of education beyond high school. It is the honor of the Upward Bound staff at SMSU to help students achieve their dreams and succeed in all they wish to do. The Upward Bound staff at SMSU have a passion for working with new generations of students and watching them thrive as they continue their participation in the TRIO Upward Bound Program.

SAAC Committee members Lexy Gilbert and Emily Van Roekel, alongside SMSU soccer coach Clayson Glasgow talked about SMSU's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and its initiatives: It's A Slam Dunk-Don't Drive Drunk, It's on Us-Sexual Assault Awareness, Make-A-Wish support, Mental Health Awareness, and the Green Bandana Project.

The student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight into the student-athlete experience. SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Associate Professor of Agricultural Education Dr. Kristin Kovar previews the upcoming Ag Bowl Scholarship Invite.

SMSU will host the 12th Annual Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational, presented by Ralco Nutrition of Marshall, on Friday, February 3, 2023. SMSU will welcome close to 1,000 FFA students from across the state back to the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University for this year’s invitational.

The Ag Bowl Scholarship Invite is a competition for FFA members to participate in FFA-certified Career Development Events (CDEs). Students can compete individually and as a team. The top FFA chapter will receive $500, the second-place chapter will receive $300, and a randomly selected chapter will receive $200. In team competition, each member of the first-place team will be awarded $500 in scholarship dollars and each member on the second-place team will receive $250 in scholarship dollars to SMSU. Individual CDE winners will receive scholarship dollars to SMSU: $500 to first-place winners and $250 to second-place winners. The goal is to bring more awareness to high school students through this invitational, while giving them the opportunity to challenge themselves in several different CDEs. Proceeds from Ag Bowl and the Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational help to fund scholarships and programming to SMSU students and young people who dedicate their careers to business success in agriculture, environmental science, and the food industries. SMSU's educational programs in agriculture, environmental science, and food arts & sciences develop young people who spend their careers working to grow the economic success of the agricultural industry.

Southwest Minnesota State University's Director of Athletics Jen Flowers provides an update as the winter seasons of Mustang Athletics continues, while the spring competition schedule is fast approaching.

Flowers, who began her duties on July 1, recently completed her third season as the commissioner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and has spent 15 years in administrative roles at the intercollegiate level. She becomes the first female Director of Athletics in University history to oversee both the women’s and men’s programs.

Minnesota State Chancellor Devinder Malhotra explains the $350 million funding request the system is proposing during the 2023 legislation session for the FY2024-2025 biennial budget.

Chancellor Malhotra engaged with campus leaders, stakeholders and community members at 12 different listening sessions across the state to help understand and formulate the proposal.

The resounding theme derived from the sessions was that investing in Minnesota State is an investment in the future economic vitality of the region and prosperity of the communities in which the system’s colleges and universities are located in.

The $350 million dollar proposal focuses on three main efforts:

A tuition freeze and an expansion of open education resources
Growth & advancement of Minnesota's workforce development
Student support & closing the equity gap
