In this episode of the afikra community podcast series, Bas Sou'al, Franca Al-Khouri from afikra's Berlin chapter gives a "Forward" presentation on an Al Jazeera English-language documentary "40 Years of Solitude". The documentary follows Moroccan soldiers who fought for the French in the Indochina War in Vietnam in the mid-20th century and remained in Vietnam after Morocco's Independence.
Using the documentary as a starting point, Franca explores the relationship between France (as a colonial power), Morocco and Vietnam and the lasting impact of the Indochina War on the families that were left behind.

Cormack unveils the rich histories of independent, enterprising women like vaudeville star Rose al-Youssef (who launched one of Cairo’s most important newspapers); nightclub singer Mounira al-Mahdiyya (the first woman to lead an Egyptian theater company) and her great rival, Oum Kalthoum (still venerated for her soulful lyrics); and other fabulous female stars of the interwar period, a time marked by excess and unheard-of freedom of expression. Buffeted by crosswinds of colonialism and nationalism, conservatism and liberalism, “religious” and “secular” values, patriarchy and feminism, this new generation of celebrities offered a new vision for women in Egypt and throughout the Middle East.

El-Salahi is a Sudanese artist who was arrested in 1975 and held without trial in Khartoum's Kober Prison. In the weeks of house arrest that followed his release, the pioneering modernist artist produced his Prison Notebook.
