Leadership in the fire service is needed not just when it’s convenient, but at all times. No matter what’s on your collar, stop thinking about you and start thinking about the team! This podcast is in my opinion a motivation for firefighters to get off the couch and improve their skills, leadership, department, and team. We all can get complacent, so check out my podcast to get up and do work!
Find out how I describe firemen as either a Pitbull or a puppy. There is a difference. We all know Alpha dogs in the service we’ll use the term Pitbull, because they are aggressive and ready to do work. Puppies are the young ones that still can bite, but still have a lot to learn. Check out this episode and how I describe a Pitbull and a puppy!
FD traditions and the over saturation of training and how it’s becoming an issue. Just listen and you will find out!
Do you have someone that you’ve thought was a great mentor? Is there someone out there that you can say kicked you in the ass and made you a great fireman. I give you my 3 that inspired me who I am today. Thank those leaders or mentors that helped you through those first years in the fire service.
Are you all in to your department, fire service, your crew? Do you only care for your own benefit? Well I dive into this topic and I want you to ask your crew and your self are YOU all in?
My thoughts on 9/11 and what the brotherhood did for me. We need to build that brotherhood back. When you think about those 343, remember they did their job and they had each others backs through out. So hope you enjoy my personal experience of 9/11
Welcome to part 2 of being on a somewhat of a hiatus. Life has been busy and I want to voice some of my thoughts of my last podcast and also dove into holding not only yourself accountable but others. Check it out!
Build your team to be the best. Your only strong as your weakest link right? Well utilize what you have to make that link stronger. As a leader in the fire service we have to constantly build our teams to be effective and smart! Delegation is great to develop firefighters into leaders and great workers. Make your crew that crew that is dependable, trustworthy, and effective.
Just talking about search. How much have you trained on search? Search should be one of topics that we should cover often. We have to be ready for the time someone needs extricated from a building. Never accept “we train too much”. Always be prepared for anything!
Do you have someone that is a 6/22? You know 6 months in the job 22 years experience! Well the generational gap is getting bigger and wider. Firefighters are changing how the FD works. We have to train these firefighters to gain that experience. You have to read your people to have an understanding of them and how they operate. Experience will have precedence over years in some perspectives and situations. Listen to what I have to say about age and experience!!
Acting officers have opportunities to learn from experience while riding the seat. Does it mean that person is ready? By preparing yourself for that time when you’re riding seat, you can be ready to make critical decisions. Only training and experience can make you ready for that time. Mirror your officer and see how they talk, make decisions and see their flow. It’s tough and nerve racking to ride seat for the first time, but you have to be prepared for it and those first 5 minutes.
The first 5 minutes on calls is crucial for the positive outcome of the incident. Do you have a plan in place for what you are going to do in those first 5 minutes. Technical rescue and extrications have the same type of process but may be different in certain aspects than a structure fire. Make sure that you follow your policy and practice making those sound decisions in the first 5 minutes.
With the recent school shooting does your department have a mass shooting response? Is there policies in place or do they need updated? It’s a crazy world we live in and it’s unfortunate that our children have to be part of the nasty world of shootings in schools. Mental health of responders is real. Having an incident where children are involved can be tough on a responders mental health. Take care of yourself and your fellow firefighters. Talk with someone if you’re having issues. Check out my latest episode where I voice my thoughts about this topic!
I’m motivated today!!! Do you trust your leader? Your leader makes decisions that affect you and your company and department. Are they sound decisions or are they bullying tactics to get their point across? I talk about issues that we see in the fire service with our leadership. How we can possibly change that outlook. I’m on fire so check out my latest “Trust your leader”.
Your name means everything. You start building your reputation when you start the fire service. Do you want to have a good reputation or are you not worried about it?? Your reputation follows you no matter where you go. People may only know your reputation and not know the real you. I talk about building a good reputation and how to get out of a bad one. Remember your name on the back of your coat means everything!!
Don’t get me wrong I support EMS, but are we concentrating more on the high frequency low risk calls over the low frequency high risk calls. When it comes to money, training, personnel I believe that the forgotten side of Fire has become worse. I’ve never seen a private ambulance service do tech rescue or high angle rope. Yeah those calls are few and far between, but the neglect is there. I talk about having those tough talks and being proactive to gain ground to bring the fire side in the Fire Department, stay motivated!
What is your roll? Are you a rookie, driver, officer and do you know your roll in your department?? I’m going to dive into this topic and hopefully give some helpful advice to anyone who can help people with understanding their roll. Check it out!!
Watching my sons baseball practice and it got me thinking. They did nothing but fundamentals of baseball. We need to do more fundamentals of firefighting. Help create a bad ass crew, a dependable crew. Have your people become great firemen. Fundamentals of firefighting are important on the fire scene. Don’t let a mistake happen while the fire is blowing out the door. Be fluid in your abilities of your job!!
Blue shirts vs the white shirts. Having tough conversations for both sides. Communication between the two is crucial for developing a good working relationship. Having tough conversations to bring certain topics to fruition. I’m back it’s been a year and I’m ready to bring on the talk!
We love this job so much that it intertwines our personal life. The fire department is our 2nd home and family. With such negativity, death, little sleep, etc… why do we do it? We have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world and we show up every shift ready to do work! Why?? When our own lose their lives why do we still continue doing what we do? It’s the love of the job and the people. Greatest job I’ve ever had!!
It’s the end of Season 2!! Hope everyone has enjoyed it!! I get into micro managing the decision makers and how that just ain’t right. We have to work together for an overall positive outcome on calls. Just because you have power doesn’t mean you know everything. There are folks out there that have expertise in certain areas that maybe you don’t. Trust your people, trust your officers and firefighters in leading roles. Don’t be a boss be a leader!
It’s 2022 and let’s start a new year with getting that positive change in mind. Let’s kill that complacency that is haunting the fire service. Let’s not worry about our 2nd job for 24 hours and concentrate on our department. Let’s make 2022 better than last year and make yourself and your department better!
During graduation you walk across that stage for 5 seconds of recognition for years of hard work. Why? Is that what you get for all that stress, tears, headaches and long nights? Investing in yourself and your FD can bring out that positive change and progression. We work and invest in ourselves to better the department we work for and for the people. That few seconds to walk across that stage with that diploma can echo for years to come!

I’ve talked about changes and how to make them. But are they working? Staying patient on change can be tough but it’s possible that change can happen. Make 2022 a year of change and goal oriented. I’m not expert but I’d love to hear other peoples mind set on what they want to change. It’s all about positive progress and making things better for all.
Have you ever read a LODD report? Well I have read a few recently and it got me thinking what are we doing to prevent these from happening? I talk about preparing you and your crew on air consumption and understanding signs and symptoms of flashover and other fire scene issues. You are responsible for you and your crew and making sure they don’t end up a LODD.

Talking about structure fires and running a scene with competent people and assigning jobs to complete the task. Knowing how to extinguish, command, and mitigate a fire is crucial for all levels in the FD. Know what you need to do to better yourself in your job and help those under you.
Incompetent leadership is a disease that we need to find a cure for. I will talk about the two different types of incompetent leadership and how to try and improve that relationship with your higher ups. Move away from complacency and understand your job and the one above you. Always work together to complete the task at hand, stay motivated!

I’m talking about a class we conducted this past week and thanking all the instructors that were there. We need more instructors to pass that great info off to the rookies and née personnel. A possible name change and something big maybe coming. Get Motivated FD may have a name change soon with other changes to get the word and training out to even more folks! Thanks for listening and stay motivated!!

Interview with a firefighter about how his Company made 2 grabs at a house fire. Great talk about how they made a grab and going over search and how training for this type of situation was possible. A great podcast to start Season 2.

Going back to some of my podcasts over the last 6 months. It’s been an experience that I’ve learned some stuff from. Hopefully Season 2 will be just as good!!
We all conduct training right? Well are we going through the motions or are we giving the crews the educating of the why factor. Why do we do what we do. It’s not because “that’s the way it’s always been done” you got to have a true educated reason on why.
If you just got a promotion here is some advice that was given to me and I hope it will help you out. Don’t just stop and sit on the couch because you got that promotion. Now is the time to build your team and make them and yourself better.

Incorporating your team on some decisions is important. If you just make decisions because you have the power or you can may come and bite you in the rear. If someone knows more than you on something it’s ok to ask their opinion. Be an open door kind of person!!

I will talk about my personal PTSD that I fought through several years ago. Oh yeah F*** the nay sayers after coming back from a stress free vacation. Hit me up on Facebook and Twitter!!

Fire ground jobs and how to make the operation run smooth. Also, educating the rookies with the right tools. Are we still learning old tricks? Why not teach new ones too?
Promotion season, are you proactive or reactive?? And I talk about the fire expo and some cool stuff I learned. Also got to hang out with some awesome folks from down there!!
We say it’s about them, the victim, but it’s also about the Company and not you. What are you doing to make your Company or department better? This goes out to all officers and rookies including me!!

Utilizing training recourses not just in gear and SCBA. Computer training is great but it shouldn’t be depended on for top notch training. We talk about getting off the couch and doing work. It’s about the team and going home the next morning, this is my rant!

Leadership in the fire service is an ongoing process through out your career, it never ends. Regardless of rank stop thinking of yourself and start thinking about the the crew. We have to start leading in a forward thinking direction. This is my rant!
