In this episode, Angela Markley-Ragland shares her transition from the bustling Amarillo Tri-State Expo, Fair, and Rodeo to nurturing the family's century-old ranch. Discover the innovative changes she's championed in their cattle operation and the lifelong values instilled by her 4-H involvement. My conversation with Angela doesn't shy away from the challenges either. She opens up about managing a fair, contrasting the warm community spirit of the country with the frenetic pace of the city. Hear how board member Mr. Fletcher's wisdom on problem-solving became Angela's guiding principles. Outside the fairground, she reminds us of the importance of cherishing simple joys and connections. Growing up on a ranch that's been in your family since the 1870s certainly sets the stage for some incredible stories, and our guest, Texas-based musician Olivia Harms, doesn't disappoint with her tales of early music memories and a life performing with her musical mother. The Western lifestyle isn't just a backdrop for Olivia; it's the heart of her artistry, with every chord struck reflecting her Oregon ranching roots. We get up close and personal with the hurdles of the creative process, from writer's block to penning lyrics that echo the triumphs and trials within the rodeo and Western music scene. Olivia's influence extends beyond the stage as she's recognized among the dynamic Cowgirl Magazine's 30 Under 30, a testament to her impact as a young leader in the Western industry. With a nod to the work ethic and values instilled by her upbringing, Olivia embodies the resilience and relentless drive that's synonymous with cowboy culture. As she offers pearls of wisdom to aspiring musicians and gears up to hit the road with the Roadrunners, her story is a reminder that no matter where life takes us, staying true to our heritage and following our dreams is a ride worth taking.

On this episode, I share valuable life lessons I've learned over the past decade serving as a sales rep in the western industry. And yes- even if you don't think of yourself as a sales person this episode is still for you. I firmly believe that sales skills translate into life skills, and I share examples throughout this episode that are applicable to anyone navigating every day moments.
10 Valuable Life Lessons I’ve learned first hand as a Sales Girl
Respecting someone’s time is the fastest way to earn their respect.
Follow through. Do what you say you’re going to do.
The hard thing and right thing are often the same thing. Embrace doing hard things.
“Clear is Kind” as Brene Brown says. Strive to be an exceptional & clear communicator.
Working alongside your teammates doing whatever it takes to get the job done builds community like no other.
Attention to detail matters. It will set you apart.
You’ll never feel 100% buttoned up and ready. Do it scared. Over & over again. Repetition allows you to fine tune your craft.
When you don’t know or understand something, say so. Ask the question(s). Stay Curious.
Never let yourself be too qualified to do any job. The knowledge & understanding you gain from doing a job “outside of your wheelhouse” will allow you to solve problems faster & lead people better.
Operate by the Golden Rule- Treat Others the way you want to be treated.

“To the world you may be one person; But to one person you may be the world.” ~ Dr. Seuss. We never really know the difference we can make in another person's life by simply pausing long enough to listen. We also never know how we might be spurred to action once we recognize there is a need to be met. On this episode, I visit with Stephanie Smith (who I lovingly call Aunt Steph). Stephanie is a wife, mom of triplets, career woman & animal lover that calls Montgomery, Alabama home. She is also one of my dearest friends & greatest cheerleaders.
We unpack how one decision my mom, Pam, made many years ago led to a beautiful friendship that has richly blessed our entire family. It's a story that began due to hardship, and there have been many life lessons learned along the way. While we never wish hardship on those we love, if it hadn't been for that hardship early on in my Aunt Steph's life- the story shared on this episode wouldn't exist. The story continues to unfold decades later- filled to the brim with endless amounts of support, love & kindness. I'm forever changed because of it & grateful I get to be part of it.
I pray this episode encourages you to slow down, love harder, be kind, laugh more, give the gift of time to those who matter most, make memories & share those stories. You'll be glad you did- trust me.
Please Contact Stephanie if her story blessed you via Facebook @ Stephanie Smith & or leave a podcast review.

It has been 13 years since I first joined the IPRA family as Miss Rodeo USA, and 11 years since I had the opportunity to be part of rodeo history as one of the 15 qualifiers competing in the Cowgirls Breakaway Roping at IFR42. With each year that passes, I gain a deeper appreciation of the experiences I had by simply choosing to first bet on myself- which meant pursuing my dream of becoming Miss Rodeo USA. What I learned in the process of preparing to compete about myself, the sport of rodeo and my support system was impactful on many levels. 2010 changed the trajectory of my life (literally- I landed my career and my husband thanks to connections made in that one year). I will be forever grateful to each and every person that made sacrifices in order for me to pursue my dream. {there were many- oh so many}
Thank you to the IPRA for welcoming me with open arms. From rodeo queen to event director to an official timer & a multitude of other unique opportunities along the way to learn & meet incredible people in between-You've always made me feel at home, & It’s been quite the ride!
On this episode, I take a stroll down memory lane and share the 6 Life Skills the IPRA equipped me with that make a winning combination both in & out of the arena.
How to Travel (efficiently & cost effectively)

The Art of Making Everybody Feel Like a Somebody
Active Listening & Working Well with Others

The timing couldn't have been more perfect for our guest Christina Black to share her story. November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month & Christina's new book "Two Grandpas & a Truck" that shares part of her family's adoption story was recently published as well.
Christina is an adoptee. A title she shares first because it has made her who she is today and clearly defined family for her. And that is to love & be loved by others.
She is a wife. Married to her high school sweetheart. They were both born and raised in Mound City, KS and recently moved to Des Moines, Iowa area for a job promotion.
She is a momma. By adoption and biologically. Her trio is beautifully and wonderfully made, and she does not take for granted what an incredible gift it is to be their momma.
She is a writer and now published author. Not intentionally at first. But her thoughts and experiences through adoption led her to her first ever children's book about adoption and family.
She is a believer. In Jesus and the work he can do with open hands and a grace filled heart.

Episode 52 featuring Illinois Cowgirl Kelly Lacey Kelley is one that will leave you with a smile, some get up 'n go, a tear streaked face & a full heart. As we sat together in my SUV to record this episode, I was reminded at my core as to why I invest the time to produce this podcast. It's for stories like hers {and yours} to be available for years to come. It's about sharing stories that cut through the surface level conversation & make an impact. It's about sharing stories of brave, smart, kind & dynamic women who do hard things & believe in the power of prayer- Stories of Cowgirls who Never Give Up.
From humble junior rodeo beginnings to navigating breast cancer as a 37- year- old wife & mom of three to the importance of choosing your hauling partners- we cover it all on this episode. I promise that if you take the time to listen to Kelly's story, you'll walk away with a deeper appreciation & renewed perspective on what it looks like to handle the arena of life & all it brings with grace.

Each January, the International Professional Rodeo Association holds the International Finals Rodeo where the Top 15 cowboys & cowgirls in each event gather to compete for World titles. IFR 52 makes ten years since cowgirls have had the opportunity to the back in the box and compete for the IPRA World Championship title in the Cowgirl's Breakaway Roping. It's truly incredible to see how far this event has come in one decade.
On this episode, I catch up with IPRA Cowgirl's Breakaway Roping Event Director- Cassie Vaughan. Growing up in a rodeo family with roots that run deep in IPRA history, Cassie has a special place in her heart for the association & shares what it's like serving in this director position. The talented cowgirl calls Ottawa Lake, Michigan home, where she is a 3rd grade school teacher. Cassie & her 10 year old mare Chex are headed into IFR 52 ranked #3 in the World.

For years, I've heard people talk about the phrase "Progress Over Perfection". I've saved quote posts, read blogs & books and listened to many podcasts on the topic. However, it was rare when I actually heard someone sharing how they walked the walked not just talked the talked when it came to embracing this POP saying. The people who actually took the time to share what it looked like to embrace this way of thinking & walking it out their lives (be it home life, in their profession or learning a new skill) were the ones I learned from the most. By hearing their stories, I imagined specific areas of my life that I could embrace that POP mentality & courageously do the same.
Progress Over Perfection was my word (ok three words) for the year in 2021. It was the phrase I reminded myself of & drew my focus back to day in and day out. On this episode, I share what 2021 looked like for me as I walked the walked with my focus on Progress Over Perfection, what I learned from leaning into this idea & how the growth I experienced in 2021 helped me identify my word for 2022- CADENCE.
I also share on this episode the new format for 2022 that you can expect to see from the Cowgirl Confessions Podcast.

Taylor Steele has been my friend across the miles for nearly a decade & she’s the kind of woman who leaves a little sunshine everywhere she goes. The way she approaches life day to day with sincere gratitude & how she uses her artistic abilities to bless the lives of others are just two of the qualities I love about her. As you listen to this episode, I hope you hear her heart & the resounding message that even in the midst of tragedy (including even being homeless for a spell) there are opportunities around us & good people still left in this world. On this episode, I connect with entrepreneur Laura Benson of South Dakota. She is an incredibly dynamic business woman that loves to start & scale new businesses while also encouraging other women to pursue their dreams. Laura grew up working on her family's dairy farm & credits that experience for giving her a strong foundation in working hard to see a job through to fruition. She humbly shares her journey of how her online only boutique, Filly Flair, that started out in her basement has grown into a MASSIVE business with a 20,000 square foot warehouse & entire team of employees as well as the learning curve she has embraced along the way. The growth she's experienced with Filly Flair over the past 11 years has not come without challenges. Throw in some candid conversation about her & her husband's love story, building a business with littles, Benson Beef Company & how God has played a hand in it all- this is an episode that will leave you with a smile, encouragement & knowledge to boot.

It's so easy to get caught up in the many responsibilities we juggle & titles we hold day in & day out. Especially titles that we've worked extremely hard to earn. I see you sister- Whether you're waking up with a smile on your face chasing white lines headed to the next rodeo, feeling lost in the mundane of washing dishes & home schooling your children, scaling the corporate ladder like a boss or somewhere in between- it's easy to lose our center of balance that truly grounds us & tells us who we are versus letting the worldly titles we hold define us. On this episode, my long time cowgirl friend, Casey Dixon Houlton of Wetumpka, AL shares her thoughts on finding our princess identity amidst all the worldly titles. Casey's heart for serving the Lord, her family & others can be heard so clearly as she shares her story of stepping out on faith, making a career change & putting the breaks on her "rodeo cowgirl days" during this particular season of life to carry out what she's been called to do.

Alexa- Play Lee Greenwood's "Proud to Be an American" & Alicia Key's "This Girl is On Fire".... Yall that's the best way I know to describe this episode with 5th generation rancher & Kansas Legislator Tatum Lee. She speaks with passion, empathy, grit, patriotism & determination as she shares her story. Most recently, Tatum has received much attention for a letter she wrote addressing the need for a referendum to the National Beef Checkoff Program. Even if you don't live in rural America or have close ties to the cattle industry, it is extremely interesting as she unpacks the facts & politics surrounding the need for this referendum. From sharing her Esther moment to how she determines if a challenge is worth leaning into, you don't want to miss a second of this episode with Tatum Lee for Kansas District 117.

On this episode, I visit with one of my dearest cowgirl friends, Katie Kimble Chism. Katie & I first met while competing in the Ozark Region during our college rodeo days. Over the years, we have been hauling partners, a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a "put on your big girl britches & keep going" voice of truth & encouragement and pick up right where we left off kind of friends for each other as we have navigated all the things including careers, cowboys, kids & cattle. Katie is wearing many hats as a wife, mom, coach, competitor, career woman & entrepreneur. As she approaches each task at hand, she does it all with one goal in mind- making sure people know & remember God's name even if they don't remember hers. I'm so very proud of her and all she is doing to glorify God while using her gifts both in and out of the arena to do so. I find myself saying with each episode how special each guest is, how thankful I am for our connection and how I love the multitude of ways in which their story is making a difference in the lives of others. This week's guest is no exception. Her innovative thinking & dedication to bring the idea of performance technology & comfort to the equestrian footwear market has drastically changed both the English & Western footwear & apparel business over the last 3 decades. I've had the privilege to work under her leadership for the past eight years, and her commitment to seeing her dream come to fruition has allowed myself and many others the opportunity to pursue careers we love. Beth Cross the CEO & Co-Founder of Ariat International is an incredible wife, mother, business woman, leader & friend (just ask anyone who has gotten to spend a few minutes with her). We dive into more details on how she built success in both her personal and professional life over the years during this episode. Trust me- You'll want to keep a pen or pencil handy, as there are so many nuggets of wisdom she shares throughout our conversation.
Beth shares, "Growing up on a working horse farm in Pennsylvania, I was one of eight kids and spent my childhood surrounded by animals – horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, dogs and cats. I have a special memory of sitting in front of the TV in 1973, watching Secretariat win the Kentucky Derby. He went on to win the Triple Crown, setting records that still stand today. Secretariat’s big heart and competitive spirit were the motivations behind naming our company Ariat.
Ariat was founded as “The New Breed of Boot.” We were the first to integrate athletic footwear technology into boots for equestrian athletes. Today, our world-class product team builds innovative and award-winning performance products for all types of outdoor and work environments. We are honored to be a part of your story and thank you for being part of ours."

On this week's episode, I share my thoughts, personal experiences and some scriptures I've been leaning on & learning from recently surrounding the topic of CHANGE. When you start thinking of change as a way for God to expand your territory, change begins to feel more like an opportunity rather than a challenge.

On this episode, Julie Miller- owner & operator of High Call Outfitters in Great Bend, KS talks about the evolution of her business along with some tips, tricks & wisdom she's picked up along the way as a small business owner. Julie shares, "It’s hard to believe that 10+years ago a dream was set into motion. At that time I guess I didn’t realize that it really was my dream or goal. It has just evolved…Started in 2004 just setting up at craft fairs and selling to friends…turned into bigger rodeos, barrel races, team ropings, and the opening of our first store in Buhler KS. Then we just kept growing…Now in our 3rd location in Great Bend Kansas and still traveling some. Of course we could move to a bigger store…and we could expand even further…so until then…Keep shopping and browsing our site – you just never know where we will end up next! Although – all of this could not of ever happened without great friendships, new friendships and our great customers that enter our front door each day – the journey will continue - THANK YOU!!" Robert Collier once said, "Success is the sum of efforts repeated day in and day out." This quote describes our episode 25 guest cowgirl Rachel Fowlkes Boyd of Lone Star Rodeo Company so well. She is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to rodeo after years of wearing many hats from timer, call-in secretary, competitor, marketing director, specialty act and so much more. Rachel's hand on experience in these roles has led to her being tremendously successful both in and out of the arena. Rachel enjoys running the "nuts & bolts" behind the scenes of her family's rodeo company and also plays a big role in helping with her and her husband's performance horse business. While most people in the western industry know Brianna Bigbee as the Bleacher Babe, this Alabama gal has so much more to her than just that one title. She's a wife, a cowboy mama, a health & fitness enthusiast & just an all around mother hustler. Brianna loves the western way of life and is proud to be raising her son, Payson, along side her husband Cole in this lifestyle that they both also grew up in. On this episode, she shares how she met her husband, where the bleacher babe concept came from as well as how it's evolved over the years & why she's on a mission to share the importance of holistic wellness with others.

Hi Friend & Welcome to the Cowgirl Confessions Podcast! Thank you for choosing to join us here. Looking for a way to go from deep thinking to pausing for a moment of reflection followed by a good belly laugh with some tears thrown in along the way? If so, you're at the right place! Push play on episode 23 as LeAnn Hart and I talk about everything from their new litter of "Baussie" puppies to her handmade prayer bracelets & everything in between. LeAnn has an incredible opportunity unfolding this week as well. It's moving to say the least as she shares how God continues to work in her life.
Who is LeAnn Hart? Leann Hart is a mighty servant to God who wears many hats. Leann is a wife to JW Hart, a mother, a bucking bull stock contractor alongside her husband at Hart Cattle Company. She is an inspirational speaker, pastor, singer, songwriter, worship leader and a beautiful sister in Christ. LeAnn was born in South Louisiana in 1980. She was raised rodeoing and working hard growing up on a dairy farm always dreaming about being a cowgirl. It was at the young age of eight years old that she dedicated her life to the Lord although she found out the world has a way of weathering your faith from time to time. She likes to tell everybody it was a lot harder to stay between the mustard in the mayo but eventually the Lord got her lined out.

Who is Kenzie Ashcraft? What has her journey as a small business owner looked like? We unpack all of that on this episode of the Cowgirl Confessions Podcast. I hope you enjoy getting to know Kenzie as much as I enjoy calling her my friend. Kenzie is a wife to her high school sweetheart and mom to two precious girls, Paisley and Scout. Some of her favorite things are team roping, a good playlist, and spending time hulled up in a cabin with a book. Kenzie's husband is a firefighter in their hometown also runs a custom hay operation with her Dad in the summers. Kenzie has also started a new project called Hayfield Meals to go along with the hay operation and has expanded her decorating gift to Interior Design. Growing up within a farming/ranching family, riding horses from the age of two, growing up in the arena and eventually going on to college rodeo for Oklahoma State, she has always loved the western industry. Kenzie's first “real” job was at a boutique when she was just 16 that birthed my love and appreciation for small mom + pop shops. Kenzie loves the heart and soul that goes into a family owned business. The community that is built from it. The first name customer basis, the friends made, and the uniqueness of items carried. She decided on the name Farm Girl because of her family's Farming/Ranching heritage but also from the book of Ruth when she is harvesting {farming} in the fields with Boaz. She was such a hard working woman who was noble and faithful. Qualities that I want to bestow and share with my customers. She was the OG Farm Girl. You can read more about Kenzie's journey on her blog at farmgirlblogs.com & by listening to this episode.

Sarah is married to a cowboy, a mother of littles and runs a successful business where she helps women feel beautiful from the inside out. She even drives a Pink Cadillac! Sarah is no newcomer to the sport of rodeo. She competed for years in junior rodeo, her grandfather was a college rodeo coach and her husband, Chris Neal, runs a roping production company that puts on many well known events such as the Rising Stars, Rope for the Crown & Oklahoma's Richest Roping. Her story is full of truth, growth, love, loss and hope. We laughed and cried together recording this episode as she shared her experiences in navigating careers, cowboys, kids and cattle. Join me as I catch up with my long time cowgirl friend Camile Cox Burlison. Camile & I came up through the ranks of junior, high school and college rodeo together and we unpack alot on this episode. (It's easy to do when you've known each other for over 20 plus years.) We discuss everything from growing up rodeoing, how it shaped us and why we choose to raise our kids in the western life style to what we've learned from horses and careers. She has a unique story surrounding her journey to motherhood which includes infertility and adoption. Camile's heart for God, her family, the western lifestyle as well as what she calls "her greatest assignment" is refreshing and encouraging. It was a blessing just getting to record this story & I pray it blesses each of you that choose to listen in.

On this episode, I caught up with Britten Wallace, the owner of BW Braiding. At just 24 years old, Britten has already taken the jump from pursuing her dream as a side hustle to making the BW Braiding business her full time gig. We talk about growing up in the rodeo industry, the learning curve in owning & operating a business, horsepower and roping with your cowgirl heroes. Britten even offers a 15% off discount code for BW Braiding (that won't ever expire- how cool is that!?!), so be sure to tune in to snag that awesome code. This Oklahoma Cowgirl is a mover & shaker, and I look forward to seeing how far the Cowgirl State of Mind combined with her love for rodeo takes her. Keep up with Britten & BW Braiding: https://bwbraiding.square.site/ INSTAGRAM: @BWBRAIDING FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/britten.wallace

Have you ever looked at somebody and wondered how they've gotten to where they are today?
For as long as I can remember I have been intrigued by people and taken an interest in their stories.
During this episode, I'll share a little bit of my personal story, how this podcast came to be, my goals for what I hope it becomes and the power of storytelling.
