Cheers to 100 Episodes! 🍻
In this monumental 100th milestone episode of the Brews & Business podcast, host Braedon welcomes back former co-host and recurring favorite, Abel, for a raw, unfiltered look at their personal and professional growth over the years. Reaching 100 episodes isn’t just about the content it’s about the grit, the pivots, and the ultimate ROI of showing up.
Pull up a chair as they dive into conversation cards from the Diary of a CEO deck and break down the cold, hard truths of long-term entrepreneurship, leadership, and life.
The Power of Consistency: What does it really take to hit the big milestones (100 episodes, 10 years in business, 10 years of marriage)? Hint: It’s about showing up when you least feel like it.
Calculated Risks vs. Catastrophe: How entrepreneurs balance the thrill of diving into low-risk scenarios against the heavy preparation required for high-stakes business moves.
Authenticity & Identity: Managing decision fatigue, wearing the multiple hats of a father, husband, and CEO, and learning to finally trust your own intuition.
The Reality of Being "Unemployable": How years of solo hardships and running the show change your perspective, making a return to traditional corporate structures nearly impossible.
Accountability in Leadership: Abel breaks down his team management philosophy why open communication and calling out broken systems mean a team will sink or swim together.
Parenting and Raising Sons: A candid look at the pride and challenges of guiding boys through transitional ages, and the reward of seeing them appreciate those tough life lessons later on.
💡 "Brewed Wisdom" Rapid-Fire Segment
Braedon revisits some of the greatest takeaways from past guests, including:
Why you must know your financial numbers so no one takes advantage of you.
The ROI of setting strict client boundaries (even if it costs you short-term business).
Understanding that market willingness dictates your true value.
Why business, like good food, is ultimately about bringing diverse people together.
The ultimate debate: Is it better to be lucky or smart?
📈 The True ROI of a Passion Project
Starting out, it's easy to obsess over the monetary return on investment. 100 episodes later, Braden and Abel reflect on how the real value of a passion project lies in the incalculable returns: the sharp skills obtained, the knowledge acquired, and the lifelong friendships forged along the way.

In this episode, we sit down with Dana Harris to discuss her multifaceted career journey—from interning with the New York Mets and producing sports in Tulsa to a two-decade career in banking. Now with the American Cancer Society, Dana is spearheading the 20th anniversary of the Tulsa Cattle Barons Ball, the largest ACS fundraiser in Oklahoma. She shares her "workhorse" mentality, her philosophy on living boldly, and how her commitment to her family during the pandemic led her to a meaningful new chapter in the nonprofit sector.
Background & Career Journey
* Early Roots: Originally from Tulsa and a resident of Sapulpa, Dana attended Oklahoma State University.
* Sports Broadcasting: She gained early experience interning for the OSU sports office and the New York Mets in Queens.
* Media Production: After returning to Tulsa, she worked at a local TV station producing sports coverage for the Tulsa Talons and the Drillers.
* Banking Career: Dana spent approximately 21 years in the banking industry, including 17.5 years at Western Sun Credit Union starting in 2002, followed by four years at Yorktown Bank.
* Career Pivot: During the COVID-19 pandemic, she left banking to prioritize being present for her children’s learning and needs.
The American Cancer Society & Tulsa Cattle Barons Ball
* The Mission: Dana has been with the ACS for nearly five years, motivated in part by her family's personal experiences with cancer.
* Event Growth: As the planner for the Tulsa Cattle Barons Ball, she successfully moved the event to 181 Ranch in Bixby, where it sold 500 tickets.
* A Historic Venue: To accommodate growth, the event moved to the Ranger Arena at Expo Square; Dana was the first person to host an event at this venue.
* 20th Anniversary Milestone: This year’s event celebrates two decades and aims to host 700 attendees with a fundraising goal of $650,000.
* Efficiency & Impact: The ACS maintains a low overhead (12% to 15%) so that 80% or more of funds go directly to the cause.
* Local Support: While funds support national research, a specific "paddle raise" keeps money in Oklahoma to provide patients with gas cards, Uber rides, and lodging for treatments.
* Opportunity: Dana is currently seeking a title sponsor for this year’s milestone event.
Marketing & Life Philosophy
* Marketing Strategy: Dana advocates for "outside the box" thinking and believes marketing is about identifying a need and creating a solution.
* The "Workhorse" Brand: She describes her personal brand as a "workhorse," a tireless work ethic she learned from her father.
* Living Boldly: Dana defines "living boldly" as pushing yourself to be your best and serving as a living example of your values.
* Family Influence: Her children have helped her become more empathetic and collaborative; she strives to be present for all their school and sporting events.
* Advice for Newcomers: For those new to Tulsa, Dana recommends getting involved with a local nonprofit or school to build community connections.

We are just two episodes away from the big 100! Before we get to the celebration, we take a deep dive into two very different types of numbers in this gripping and eye-opening episode.
First, the host kicks things off with his precise, "numbers-driven" method for brewing the perfect espresso to create a perfect cortado. Our guest, Jamie Miller, also shares her unique relationship with numbers—hating math, but loving measurement—tracing how this appreciation evolved through cosmetology school and into her current professional life.
Then, the tone shifts as Jamie Miller, of The Demand Project, shares her incredible personal journey and her mission to fight child trafficking. Jamie reveals her background, the chilling moment she first discovered child trafficking, how she overcame a spiritual encounter that tried to stop her exploration, and how a remarkably successful fundraiser in July 2020 led her to The Demand Project just weeks before they opened the nation’s largest safe house for child trafficking survivors.
We discuss the pillars of The Demand Project—Prevention, Education, and Restoration—and the staggering financial reality of caring for these survivors. Finally, this episode confront shocking statistics surrounding trafficking, the age of pornography exposure, the alarming intersection between traffickers and the DHS foster care system, and the devastating lack of resources for survivors nationwide.
This is a must-listen episode about business mindset, the power of grassroots funding, and the urgent reality of child trafficking in America.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
* Knowing measurements provides satisfaction and a way to make adjustments.
* The Demand Project safe house is the largest in the nation with 25 beds. Most only have eight
* There are only 661 beds total in the entire country for child trafficking survivors. 26 states have zero beds.
* 70% of trafficked children are in the DHS foster care system.
* The annual cost to care for one child at the safe house is $75,000.
* One child can generate $375,000 per year for a trafficker.
* The average age for a female trafficking victim is 12 years old.
* The average age of pornography exposure has dropped two years in the last five years, sitting at seven years old in 2025.
* 76% of professing Christian men view pornography at least once a week.

Summary
This is the story of how a "pipe dream," a full-time job, and a Billy Currington song accidentally launched one of barbecue's most memorable brands.
Jason Rains, the founder of "Pretty Good At Drinking Beer Barbecue," joins us to share his wild 15-year journey. He started with zero experience and a team name that’s a marketing nightmare (but a fan favorite). He pulls no punches, recounting the story of finishing "dead ass last" at a major competition only to fight his way back to a Grand Reserve (second place) finish years later.
In this episode, Jason shares the unfiltered story behind his brand, his bold quest to create a sauce "better than Head Country" (a big deal in Oklahoma!), and his new projects, including a non-traditional smoker cookbook and a revolutionary no-sugar-added sauce sweetened with monk fruit.
More than just barbecue, this is a story about community, passion, and hustle. Jason balances his full-time job and a return to college for digital marketing, all while running his growing business. His core philosophy? "Food doesn't care about your race. Food doesn't care about your religion... Food brings people together."
In this episode, you'll learn:
* The Origin Story: How a Billy Currington song on a back porch led to the "PGADB" brand.
* The Competition Grind: The truth about competing, from finishing "dead ass last" in 2015 to claiming a top prize.

Summary:James Bell, President & CEO of the Broken Arrow Chamber & EDC, details the strategy behind Broken Arrow's rapid growth on the Brews & Business podcast with host Braedon Kruse.
Bell, who joined in September 2024, discusses his unique career path from medical devices to startups and, finally, economic development, explaining why he sees Broken Arrow as a "Goldilocks City." He shares his vision for the community, which focuses on balancing the attraction of primary jobs (manufacturers and tech) with nurturing small businesses and local entrepreneurs. Bell emphasizes that community development is the foundation for economic development, highlighting the Chamber's work in advocacy and workforce development, including the successful push for Senate Bill 701 (SB 701). He concludes by offering advice for entrepreneurs and discussing the personal legacy he aims to build in Broken Arrow.
Key Takeaways
* The Journey to BA was Personal and Providential: James Bell openly shares his non-linear career path, noting several instances where he resisted a push toward economic development and entrepreneurship before realizing his true calling and moving his family to Broken Arrow for its community, schools, and growth opportunities.
* Community Development is the Foundation: James stresses that economic success hinges on community development—ensuring the city is a high-quality place to live, which then attracts the businesses that create "primary jobs" that bring new money into the economy. Retail and small businesses, often overlooked in economic development discussions, are essential for this quality of life.
* The Chamber’s True Value is Beyond Networking: While the Chamber hosts many networking events, its core value lies in advocacy (like fighting for SB 701), business retention and expansion (where most new jobs are created), and providing research and resources that help small businesses and entrepreneurs succeed.
* It’s Never Too Late to Start or Pivot: Drawing from his own experience of returning to school in his late 30s for a two-year pre-med program and MBA, and jumping into a new career later in life, James encourages entrepreneurs to embrace change and new beginnings, reminding them that the average successful entrepreneur starts in their 40s.
* Advice for Entrepreneurs: Get Out of the Building: James advises that the answers to business problems are "not inside the building you're sitting in." Entrepreneurs must go out and talk to 60-100 people about the problem and their proposed solution to truly understand the market and adapt before investing heavily.

February is our month of HR. The podcast is show-style, with little formality, but we still want some structure with talking points. At the end of the day, our listeners are small businesses and solopreneurs. In this episode, we want to talk about things like getting started with insurance for your employees, what those options look like, etc.
Why do I need insurance for my business?
Should insurance be included in my business budget?
Other than my Business Owners Policy, what other insurance coverage should I consider?
Does my business qualify for “group” insurance?
How much does health insurance cost?
How can I find a one-size-fits-all plan for my employee’s individual needs?
Small Business Health Care Tax Credit, Who will be covered under a group health insurance plan?
How much can I afford to contribute toward monthly premiums for a group health insurance plan?
Would you and your employees rather pay more up-front and less when sick, or vice versa?
Can I afford to bundle vision or dental care when purchasing a group health insurance plan?
What group health insurance coverage options can my licensed health insurance agent recommend?
Where do I purchase insurance for my company?

Employee Or Customer? A New World Of Employee Retention
Tony Hsieh, former CEO of Zappos, once said of his business: “Our number one priority is company culture. Our whole belief is that if you get the culture right, most of the other stuff like delivering great customer service or building a long-term enduring brand will just happen naturally on its own.”
How Much Does Employee Retention Impact Customer Satisfaction?
One school of thought says that higher retention drives better performance.
What is customer retention?
Customer retention is a metric that businesses use to measure customer loyalty over time and gauge overall success. To boost customer retention, companies will implement various tactics to reduce the number of customers lost in a period and better their experiences to ensure that they remain loyal to the business.
How do you keep customers coming back to work with you?
How do you calculate your customer retention rate?
To calculate the customer retention rate, you have to divide the total number of customers from new customers by the number of customers acquired at the beginning of the period. The formula should look like this:
(Total # of Customers at the end of the Period - New Customers Acquired)/(Customers at the Start of the Period = Customer Retention Rate"
How to Retain Customers
1. Create a strong onboarding experience
2. Provide personalized customer experiences.
3. Build trust with your customers.
4. Implement a customer feedback loop.
5. Maintain a customer communication calendar.
6. Send a company newsletter.
7. Start a customer education program.
8. Offer unique services.
9. Start a customer retention program.

What is the hustle culture? How does this affect both employees and business owners.
We start off by sharing stories from our childhood of how we “ found our hustle” or when we realized things were different for us! From taking advantage of garage sales, to filling a need in school!
When we were younger it seems most of these hustles were fueled by childish wants… such as a bird, a phone, or even just money in our pocket..
Braedon shares taking advantage of an influx of people at garage sales and how he would cater to the customers based on the time of day!
Abel shares how a first lady got rid of all sugary drinks and foods from school, and saw an opportunity to sell candy at a very young age!
We find that from a true entrepreneur standpoint, we were given everything we needed to survive such as food, shelter, clothing… yet, our wants were always up to ourselves to achieve!
We share the idea that our businesses actually in a sense chose us due to the fact that we saw the opportunity and enjoyed the challenges coming our way..
We elaborate on when the hustle culture actually hurt each of us, and brought forth the need to balance our lives due to burnout and the rest of our lives more or less falling apart..
The change as we got older is that we went from childish needs to the want for control of your schedule and freedom of choice in our everyday lives.
Did hustle culture lead to a mental breakdown? Is there a difference in the Hustle from working in the business to working on the business?
Abel gets very vulnerable about when he started to shift his mindset in the business, and started a new life with new tools.. Which caused lots of stress and in a turn of events turned out he was robbed and sent him into a mental shut down.. Which he says was a huge beautiful time which opened his eyes to the wonderful life he had built..
After a hard reset he was able to focus even harder on what he needed to focus on..
And realizing with his team knowing the struggles and stresses together they are able to carry more weight..
We come to conclusion that in order to keep the hustle up, we need to take adequate breaks. Very much in a pendulum manner, both hustle and breaks. Or in a more common sense, work hard, play harder..
How do you measure success? Is materialistic? Is it time freedom? Is it a certain revenue figure?
We all have different measurements on success, but we come to the conclusion that while material objects are a very tangible way to measure success, it tends to lead to not so glamorous achievement and almost a dead feeling.. And we start to realize success is usually better measured in making an impact on others.
While the hustle culture is highly influenced by social media highlight reels, but as Stone points out, it shows a false narrative outcome, and we talk about getting a new truck, or new equipment.. We as business owners think about the backend stress accompanying these false narratives.
We wrap up on this topic going over how banks work and how this hustle culture is highly influenced by both social media and ease of access to funds for WANTS vs NEEDS!
What does it mean to Fail?
Join the Brews & Business Podcast to find out how business owners handle failures, with this episode you’ll learn about how similar business failures really are and how in the grand scheme of business, most entrepreneurs handle failing in a very similar fashion.
In this Episode, we touch base on ways to get more efficient in your business, but even more importantly, in your LIFE!!
It all comes down to planning your life! Creating more structure to your days and tasks completion!
We hear from Sooner Marketing's very own Bobby Elder, who seems to be making headway with automation and using certain apps to increase productivity, while not having to do each step yourself!
Bobby brings up a great tip to retroactively update the calendar to make sure he's able to accurately plan in the future based on previous weeks productivity!
BUZZZZ!! LOL
Stone provides a great strategy of building his weeks backwards due to his industry causing typical last minute changes earlier in the week! Planning from friday to monday!
Using apps like Zapier, Calendy, Quickbooks, and properly integrating them, allows SMS to automatically respond to reviews on both the good and bad reviews, as well as setting up booking and planning, instead of manually needing to get with customers to set appropriate times for booking, easily making certain slots available to customers and knowing that on the business end, we are on customer alert during those times!
Chance does a great job of explaining how a morning routine also helps create efficiency, due to focusing first on yourself, then giving yourself to others. Starting first with himself, and quickly and easily shifting to work in the routine.. As well as an evening routine, which can consist of getting ready for the next day as well as wrapping up from the day of things that didn't get addressed.
Stone shares his morning shuffle, to get his day ready, an all too familiar shuffle for the construction industry, which lead to burnout, helped him realize his morning routine which is focused on himself, helps keep him on track when something traumatic happens!
Bobby brings up a great question on how do we refocus when productivity isnt there.. And a rebounding answer, between all of us, is simple taking a break and focusing on something fun or outside of the work we are working on!
Some of you may be more reliant on other people's time, so how do you stay productive during that “wasted time?”
Another great automation Braedon mentions is putting your phone on work mode, or do not disturb mode to help keep productivity going!
Abel touches base on how his inbox and texts are basically at inbox zero. Keeping focus on the current tasks at hand.. Keeping his stress levels lower and paying attention to what's important!
We touch base on to-do lists, we all explain what they mean to us..
Braedon calls his a shit list, which he calls his rolling list of shit, which doesnt necessarily have any rhyme or reason, but basically just getting his thoughts out onto paper.
Stone has his notebook, which is his very important info, or more or less, If it makes money, it goes in the notebook.
Abel touches base on his list and how he likes to whiteout as tasks are completed
Sometimes its setting up the room or the workflow, coming from room temperature, drink option, or even just starting your day outdoors.. But even more important is creating a supportive, open, and honest environment between all members of your community. Bobby puts it quite simple on how to create this environment.. LISTENING!
Which may come down to listening to your team, and simply getting ice or buying them lunch.. When you listen to them, they go above and beyond for you!
Key takeaways!
Braedon- Concentrate on task, Shitlist, Calendar
Chance- use a calendar to schedule and manage yourself!
Stone- Prioritize your tasks!
Bobby- Automation!!
Abel- Say no to distractions!

Hear from our special guest Nathan Sweats, who runs 3 companies, which means he has 3 times the opportunity for failures, but with the correct mindset he sees it as an opportunity to learn from 3 different practices and processes!
Touching base all the way from Lawsuits, IRS, closing down companies, we all talk about the lessons learned and the ability to keep failing forward.
Nathan shares a great analogy passed on from his dad about mastering a skill through reading and consuming knowledge, but actually putting it in practice is a whole different animal!
Overall Nathan brought up the energy to show us how each of these failures have actually catapulted him from simple construction to now developing his own subdivision!
Taking an interesting concept of building the Anthem brand, while not muddying the waters by breaking out his companies into different divisions and different management process, all while maintaining the Anthem standards.
We find ourselves reiterating the realization of learning from each of our failures and the concept of working on ourselves before tackling the business, as many times our personal habits and perceptions that hold us back..
Get right to the nitty gritty at minute 27 where we dive into our biggest failures, and what we learned from them, and how our businesses have changed for the better!
