August Aguilar is an independent filmmaker, podcaster, and content creator. Born in Philadelphia, PA, and now currently residing in Knoxville, TN, August created the multi-media production company Strange Films Studios in 2016.

Strange Films creates original films, music, art, podcasts, and comic books. While specializing in the horror genre, they are not limited to working with any other genre that is exciting. Award winning filmmaker Jonathan Perry talks to me about "sentinelese", about his latest project which explores the isoloated people of North Sentinel Island. In 2006, islanders killed two fishermen whose boat had drifted ashore, and in 2018 an American Christian missionary was killed after bribing local fishermen to transport him to the island. I talk to Jonathan about why he would make a film about people who have made it very clear that they don't want any contact with the outside.

Leland Steel grew up in a suburb of Vancouver, BC, Canada. He was a stereotypical introvert and enthusiast of nerdy things, keeping a close-knit group of friends who spent their time playing street hockey, video games, Magic: The Gathering, and board games, as well as consuming all kinds of films. This group of friends became known as T-Hud, a very "clever" abbreviation for The Neighbourhood, since they all lived on the same street.

It wasn't until his early- to mid-20s that he got into TTRPGs and the hobby tabletop gaming industry. This prompted him to start The T-Hud Podcast, a podcast covering video games, board games, and movies, which has been going for over five years, as well as his actual play show, The Incorrigible Party, which has been running for over three years and is quickly coming to an end. This is an incredibly bittersweet and significant milestone for them.

My guest today is Sam Plank, the founder and CEO of Dubb, an AI marketing tool for podcasters. We discussed the implications of recent AI models such as Dall-e, Stable Diffusion, and Mid Journey and ChatGPT. We also talked about the importance of AI alignment and reducing biases in AI models, as well as the implications of using AI in the legal profession. In the last episode of the season, I met Martin Whiskin to talk about how a voiceover artist makes a living, what goes into the work, and how a voiceover artist can help a business stand out from the crowd.

Martin Whiskin is a voiceover artist who has lent his voice to Lego, RAF, Mercedes, NHS and BMW, to name a few, but his background is much more corporate and far less creative than voiceover.

He worked as a data manager for 20 years while trying to be a "rock star" and was made redundant around the same time he realized that he wasn't good enough to be a famous musician.

Martin was left looking at the skills he'd built up over the years during his time in bands, photography, design, videos etc., to see if any of those skills could be monetized. They couldn't! What was good enough for punk bands wasn't good enough to sell to businesses… but in a roundabout way, this led him to voiceover. Something that, having never had any plans to do anything even remotely like it, he is in love with.

More about Tommy

A graduate of Boston College, Tommy Burke started out in television as a Production Assistant in the eighties, while working other odd jobs—from bar bouncer, golf caddy to factory assemblyman—to sustain the meager TV industry income. His height and physical build came in handy, scoring him a gig loading grip trucks for Powerhouse Films, which further exposed him to commercials and films in and around the New England area. He soon became the ‘go to’ guy of Production Assistants in Boston, working every motion picture produced around Massachusetts at that time, including Mermaids and The Kennedys of Massachusetts.

After a move to Los Angeles in 1990, Burke quickly moved up the production ranks, working as First Assistant Director on an independent film with Johnny Depp. Nicknamed “the Irish Bull” by his west coast colleagues, Burke went on to secure Assistant Director credits on productions including the film Close to Home, Jerry Bruckheimer’s acclaimed TV series Skin, CSI Miami, and the pilot for Desperate Housewives, and many others. He spent the last five years of his film career on location in Chicago, working as First Assistant Director on Dick Wolf’s long-running series, Chicago PD from 2014-2019.

In 2003, Burke was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He kept right on working. Three years of doctor visits, nine operations and midnight chemotherapy infusions were all included in part of his rigorous, 14-hour shoot-day routine. To no surprise given his well-known tenacity, Burke conquered the disease into remission mostly by himself. The experience empowered him to take inventory of his life, specifically his trade, leading him to approach his career from an alternative perspective that was better aligned with his personal values. In a plot twist deserving of any big-budget production, 2019 brought with it another bump in the road; this time, it was Parkinson’s Disease at age 56. Again forced to take stock of his life, Tommy Burke hung up his AD walkie and returned to the west coast to enlist all of his drive, determination, spirit, stubbornness, and good humor in the second battle of his life.

Tommy Burke is best known in the industry for his talent, perseverance, and respectful collaboration with colleagues on all levels. And his one-liners.

Being surrounded by people that accept you, like you and encourage you to be you, and learning to love yourself and knowing others love you is the best feeling in the entire world. LGBTQ artist Mr Slade experienced this love and acceptance when he was 16 and now uses his music to give a little bit of that acceptance back to the gay community.

For me, I needed this interview, and that’s something that I didn’t realise until I was writing this episode description. I found that I suddenly had a connection to the queer kids who came before me. I learned a bit more about my own gay history, and while on the face of it, this is just an interview with a musician, under it all, there is gay 16-year-old me standing in disbelieve that I’m both so open and listening to someone and chatting with someone who’s music goes against every part of his catholic conservative upbringing

We talked about growing up gay and Mr Slade’s musical inspirations. Like so many who aspire to make music, it usually comes from being “bored” in their everyday jobs. While working his boring retail job, MR. Slade’s music career began. His goal is to create music that was fun and high energy but also aggressive, inspired mainly by music from the 80s and 90s, taking elements from that era and giving it a more updated interpretation.

As men, we are told from a young age that we're supposed to be competitive, not collaborative. My guest on this episode asks us to re-examine this social condition as adults. We discuss how Andrew Tate is really scared and the difference between traditional and toxic masculinity. We also talk about how people can be better alleys for the LGBTQ+ Community and using our privilege to knock down barriers for each other.

Mac McGregor tells me his story of growing up in a competitive sporting environment in the bible belt in the 1960s and describing the magic letter F that follows you the rest of your life. He found that his gender didn’t fit and started changing his name to something more masculine at four years old. He started martial arts when he was 6, and by the time he was 17, he had won the US Lightweight fighting title. This opened up the world to him, and he found that there were more LGBTQ+ people out there. Sadly, despite his successes over a long career, he could not transition until he retired from the sport.

He started working in activism as a female athlete, campaigning for getting equal access to facilities and resources for female athletes and then moved to LGBTQ+ rights.

Mac is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Positive Masculinity, a non-profit that works to dismantle toxic masculinity and create a healthier model of masculinity for all people. Mac is also the author of the bestselling book, Positive Masculinity Now.
