Temptation surrounds us in this Wilderness we call life on earth. We are weak and cannot always rebuke the temptations of the world as Jesus did after his baptism. But with the power of Christ and the Holy Spirit with in us we can reduce the times we give in and we can live in the knowledge when we fail, we are forgiven by Christ's work on the cross. Jesus was lifted up to lift you up. In serving God the Father Jesus was lifted up, you also are lifted up to serve God in being Christ love to others and telling them about the Kingdom that has come near.
Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit and makes it leave a man who has endured being possessed. What are the unclean spirits in our time? Are they the same or different? We still have them possessing us today but we may call them by other names.
Sometimes it just isn't easy to jump up and go to follow. That's what Simon, Andrew, James and John did when Jesus called them from their fishing boats. It sure sounds simple enough but it is our nature to consider what we have to give up to follow Christ. When we do we find out what we gave up was nothing compared to what we received. Philip tells his friend Nathanael about Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah. Nathanael questions if anything good can come from Nazareth. Philip says, Come and See. Open your eyes to the way the truth the light and be amazed.
Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan. You were baptized in Jesus and received the Holy Spirit. What does that mean for you? What does your baptism mean to you? YOU are a child of God, beloved.
